The trackball, a related pointing device, was invented in 1946 by Ralph Benjamin as part of a post-World War II-era fire-control radar plotting system called Comprehensive Display System (CDS). Benjamin was then working for the British Royal Navy Scientific Service. Benjamin's project used analog computers to calculate the future position of target aircraft based on several initial input points provided by a user with a joystick. Benjamin felt that a more elegant input device was needed and invented what they called a "roller ball" for this purpose.
The device was patented in 1947, but only a prototype using a metal ball rolling on two rubber-coated wheels was ever built, and the device was kept as a military secret.
Another early trackball was built by Kenyon Taylor, a British electrical engineer working in collaboration with Tom Cranston and Fred Longstaff. Taylor was part of the original Ferranti Canada, working on the Royal Canadian Navy's DATAR (Digital Automated Tracking and Resolving) system in 1952.
DATAR was similar in concept to Benjamin's display. The trackball used four disks to pick up motion, two each for the X and Y directions. Several rollers provided mechanical support. When the ball was rolled, the pickup discs spun and contacts on their outer rim made periodic contact with wires, producing pulses of output with each movement of the ball. By counting the pulses, the physical movement of the ball could be determined. A digital computer calculated the tracks and sent the resulting data to other ships in a task force using pulse-code modulation radio signals. This trackball used a standard Canadian five-pin bowling ball. It was not patented, since it was a secret military project.
Douglas Engelbart of the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) has been credited in published books by Thierry Bardini, Paul Ceruzzi, Howard Rheingold, and several others as the inventor of the computer mouse. Engelbart was also recognized as such in various obituary titles after his death in July 2013.
By 1963, Engelbart had already established a research lab at SRI, the Augmentation Research Center (ARC), to pursue his objective of developing both hardware and software computer technology to "augment" human intelligence. That November, while attending a conference on computer graphics in Reno, Nevada, Engelbart began to ponder how to adapt the underlying principles of the planimeter to inputting X- and Y-coordinate data. On November 14, 1963, he first recorded his thoughts in his personal notebook about something he initially called a "bug," which in a "3-point" form could have a "drop point and 2 orthogonal wheels." He wrote that the "bug" would be "easier" and "more natural" to use, and unlike a stylus, it would stay still when let go, which meant it would be "much better for coordination with the keyboard."
In 1964, Bill English joined ARC, where he helped Engelbart build the first mouse prototype. They christened the device the mouse as early models had a cord attached to the rear part of the device which looked like a tail, and in turn resembled the common mouse. As noted above, this "mouse" was first mentioned in print in a July 1965 report, on which English was the lead author. On 9 December 1968, Engelbart publicly demonstrated the mouse at what would come to be known as The Mother of All Demos. Engelbart never received any royalties for it, as his employer SRI held the patent, which expired before the mouse became widely used in personal computers. In any event, the invention of the mouse was just a small part of Engelbart's much larger project of augmenting human intellect.
Several other experimental pointing-devices developed for Engelbart's oN-Line System (NLS) exploited different body movements – for example, head-mounted devices attached to the chin or nose – but ultimately the mouse won out because of its speed and convenience. The first mouse, a bulky device (pictured) used two potentiometers perpendicular to each other and connected to wheels: the rotation of each wheel translated into motion along one axis. At the time of the "Mother of All Demos", Engelbart's group had been using their second generation, 3-button mouse for about a year.
On October 2, 1968, a mouse device named Rollkugel (German for "rolling ball") was described as an optional device for its SIG-100 terminal was developed by the German company Telefunken. As the name suggests and unlike Engelbart's mouse, the Telefunken model already had a ball. It was based on an earlier trackball-like device (also named Rollkugel) that was embedded into radar flight control desks. This trackball had been developed by a team led by Rainer Mallebrein at Telefunken Konstanz for the German Bundesanstalt für Flugsicherung (Federal Air Traffic Control) as part of their TR 86 process computer system with its SIG 100-86 vector graphics terminal.
When the development for the Telefunken main frame TR 440 [de] began in 1965, Mallebrein and his team came up with the idea of "reversing" the existing Rollkugel into a moveable mouse-like device, so that customers did not have to be bothered with mounting holes for the earlier trackball device. Together with light pens and trackballs, it was offered as an optional input device for their system since 1968. Some Rollkugel mouses installed at the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum in Munich in 1972 are well preserved in a museum. Telefunken considered the invention too unimportant to apply for a patent on it.
The Xerox Alto was one of the first computers designed for individual use in 1973 and is regarded as the first modern computer to utilize a mouse. Inspired by PARC's Alto, the Lilith, a computer which had been developed by a team around Niklaus Wirth at ETH Zürich between 1978 and 1980, provided a mouse as well. The third marketed version of an integrated mouse shipped as a part of a computer and intended for personal computer navigation came with the Xerox 8010 Star in 1981.
By 1982, the Xerox 8010 was probably the best-known computer with a mouse. The Sun-1 also came with a mouse, and the forthcoming Apple Lisa was rumored to use one, but the peripheral remained obscure; Jack Hawley of The Mouse House reported that one buyer for a large organization believed at first that his company sold lab mice. Hawley, who manufactured mice for Xerox, stated that "Practically, I have the market all to myself right now"; a Hawley mouse cost $415. In 1982, Logitech introduced the P4 Mouse at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas, its first hardware mouse. That same year Microsoft made the decision to make the MS-DOS program Microsoft Word mouse-compatible, and developed the first PC-compatible mouse. Microsoft's mouse shipped in 1983, thus beginning the Microsoft Hardware division of the company. However, the mouse remained relatively obscure until the appearance of the Macintosh 128K (which included an updated version of the single-button Lisa Mouse) in 1984, and of the Amiga 1000 and the Atari ST in 1985.

Pylon Network is the Moonshot of 2020
Pylon Network (PYLNT) has max supply of 633858 only and sitting at a ridiculously low marketcap of 390k approx. They recently got listed on idex and have recently released updated tokenomics. What we are about to witness is outcome of hardwork of 4-5 years.
First lets understand what the project is all about. PYLNT is a blockchain for energy sector and helps world save energy and consumers their energy bills. Apart from this they are also working on P2P energy trading marketplace, where companies can trade their energy credits (research about Copenhagen summit for this usecase). So they have built a tech, which when implemented , automatically helps companies and people save on energy. Software that hears a machine failure before it occurs; a program that turns a multitude of data into a story, chips that can simulate brain activity … Technologies are advancing by leaps and bounds and many are the inventions that have sprung up in the Czech or French brains. The French excel in the technology of banking or electromotive, the Czech specialty is found in the field of autonomous vehicles, innovations for mechanical engineering and various other software by web agency California European Commission statistics praise growing performance in innovation in the European Union (5.8% since 2010), but globally Europe will face competition from more and more important. With China we still have a head start, but it is shrinking rapidly because China’s progress in the field of innovation is three times faster than that of the EU. Europe, which accounts for 7% of the world’s population, accounts for 20% of global investment in research and development. Last year, the Czech Republic invested 1.98% of its gross domestic product in R & D, France 2.27%. Recent Czech discoveries that Lurer In the last few years, several technology companies have presented interesting innovations on the Czech scene. This technology is most often tuned to production lines, escalators, railway switches or wind turbines. The title «Cool Vendor» awarded by Garner to small companies that have innovative technologies, a solid business plan or imagination, was also awarded to an expanded analysis platform called Stories. It processes data in time series to form graphical analyzes in operational memory, which is able to analyze millions of combinations and find in these data key factors that can influence different metrics. Huge volumes of data are transformed into stories, stories, within the reach of an ordinary user. Business leaders no longer have to review or produce sharp analyzes, they just need to read a few automatically generated titles, similar to newspaper headlines, that deal with trends in a given issue or business and allow to identify the problems and their causes. Understand a large amount of data or even somehow read your thoughts, this is the business area of Setsquare in Pilsen. Their semantic text analysis algorithm can read millions of times faster than a person and can learn any language. The starting tool is the largest volume of text available, such as customer e-mails or comments on social networks. The keywords naturally flow from the texts according to the subjects most often mentioned by the people. Thus, the company can discover what are the opinions on their product, the trends, the interests of the people or even discover new subjects to which she had not thought. The product is on sale since 2014, but it is the result of 12 years of research conducted by the director of Sentisquare Josef Steinberger. The main customers are T-Mobile, Česká spořitelna, ČSOB or Volkswagen. Three artificial intelligence enthusiasts met during their doctoral studies, and the combination of their ideas gave birth to Rossum, a program that teaches machines to understand documents and more particularly invoices. The technological secret of the company lies in the fact that the computer knows how to distinguish between different bills just as a person would do. It is estimated that only 20% of invoices are automatically read today, the rest must be processed by accountants. The creation of templates for each type of invoice is expensive, which is why the idea of the Rossum Invoice Robots (word game with the RUR robots of the Czech writer Karel Čapek) has aroused the interest of the major auditing companies . The system was built on test data created by a team of annotators acting as accountants, and the machines copied their methods. The goal was to simplify the work of the accountants and give them a free space to do a real job that would not involve copying bills. This job now is done by a neural network. A business model, which has upset the B2B segment of optimization and price management, is proposed by Price f (x). A pricing policy based on current events, competitive prices or seasonality can increase sales and margins by several percent. The problem lies in the complexity and cost of this method. However, a company based in Munich, with a research and development center in the Czech Republic, offers the rental of software that can find the solution. Both the risk of failure and the initial investment are borne by Price f (x), and the price for customers is one-third cheaper than that of the competition. French robots and artificial brains Undoubtedly the biggest French industrial innovator in the Czech Republic is Valeo, which has made massive investments in recent years and opened a research and development center in Prague. Valeo is one of the world’s leading technological innovators and its Czech engineers contribute a lot. In 2004, Citroën was the first to use the «stop & start» system that automatically turns off the engine when the car is stopped, in traffic jams for example. Consumption fell by 6 to 15%, CO2 emissions decreased and the system was then used by all car manufacturers, especially after the introduction of the Euro 5 standard. Competition in this area has meanwhile developed, but the Valeo system is present in a third of cars with this technology. Valeo’s Prague Research Center employs nearly a thousand experts dedicated to the development of sensors and software for parking assistance systems and active safety systems: assistance to stay on track, braking automatic emergency or collision risk warning with a car in a blind spot. Everything is tested directly on site or at the Milovice industrial site. In April, the French company Prophesee presented a microcamera inspired by the human body. The camera captures hundreds of frames per second like the human eye, and software with its algorithms, evaluates these data almost instantly, just like the brain. However, the system does not function as a high frequency camera that would collect data, it only evaluates the differences between the images. It gets information faster and does not have to deal with large volumes of data. Until now, Prophesee products have been used in biology, but now they concern the industry, where they contribute to the acceleration of the production process thanks to ultra-fast control of the situation. A big challenge in today’s mobile age is to introduce as much technology as possible into a tiny chip, which is at the heart of smartphones, autonomous vehicles or data centers. In the global competition, two French companies have managed to stand out. Smart me up, founded in Grenoble in 2012, introduced after three years of research a facial recognition technology, which also assesses the age, sex and emotions of the person in front of the camera. Its services are used by French railways SNCF or by Chinese stores to evaluate the reactions of customers to advertising. In the future, it could be used in smart cities — for safety — or to monitor the fatigue of vehicle drivers. In August 2018, the startup was bought by car subcontractor Magneti Marelli. Still in Grenoble, but 4 years earlier, Joël Monnier founded the company Kalray to produce intelligent processors able to analyze the data that pass through them and make decisions in real time. Last year, the company had 65 employees, a turnover of 875,000 euros, and in June 2018, it raised 43.5 million euros on the occasion of its IPO. The money from this sale is intended for the further development of chips, which will be used mainly in data centers and partly also in autonomous vehicles. The cybersecurity of companies is ensured for example by Sentryo, a company of Lyon, which won in August 2018 the innovation contest of Public Investment Bank Bpifrance. The Kitea project detects anomalies in the Internet of Things (IoT) in the industry to help companies defend themselves against cyber attacks and secure their systems. Active analysis is used to characterize and quantify unknown flows in the enterprise based on available data. The use is planned for smart cities or autonomous vehicles. A large number of innovations in the Czech Republic and France are related to the automotive industry, particularly autonomous vehicles or electromobility. A common theme is also the movement in the air, be it aircraft of different sizes or drones. Interesting projects are growing in business incubators like the Czech Startup Yard or Station F in Paris. New ideas sprout every day in bright brains. We can therefore expect other discoveries in the field of intelligent technologies and their use in industry and daily life.

HCL AXON has achieved significant mobility deployments, including HCL’s mobile policing solution, which has successfully been deployed to over 8,000 officers across a number of UK police forces. The solution links some 42 local and national back-office police systems, databases and business processes. This allows officers to work using mobile devices in the community for at least 80 percent of their time without having to return to the station. The service is currently being enhanced to include fingerprinting and image matching with faster real-time enquiry and data analysis. HCL AXON is working with an international telecoms provider to release a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) version for both mobile policing and health care working.

The Googleplex of the Future Has Privacy Robots, Meeting Tents and Your Very Own Balloon Wall MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google’s first office was a cluttered Silicon Valley garage crammed with desks resting on sawhorses. In 2003, five years after its founding, the company moved into a sprawling campus called the Googleplex. The airy, open offices and whimsical common spaces set a standard for what an innovative workplace was supposed to look like. Over the years, the amenities piled up. The food was free, and so were buses to and from work: Getting to the office, and staying there all day, was easy. Now, the company that once redefined how an employer treats its workers is trying to redefine the office itself. Google is creating a post-pandemic workplace that will accommodate employees who got used to working from home over the past year and don’t want to be in the office all the time anymore. The company will encourage — but not mandate — that employees be vaccinated when they start returning to the office, probably in September. At first, the interior of Google’s buildings may not appear all that different. But over the next year or so, Google will try out new office designs in millions of square feet of space, or about 10 percent of its global work spaces. The plans build on work that began before the coronavirus crisis sent Google’s work force home, when the company asked a diverse group of consultants — including sociologists who study “Generation Z” and how junior high students socialize and learn — to imagine what future workers would want. The answer seems to be Ikea meets Lego. Instead of rows of desks next to cookie-cutter meeting rooms, Google is designing “Team Pods.” Each pod is a blank canvas: Chairs, desks, whiteboards and storage units on casters can be wheeled into various arrangements, and in some cases rearranged in a matter of hours. To deal with an expected blend of remote and office workers, the company is also creating a new meeting room called Campfire, where in-person attendees sit in a circle interspersed with impossible-to-ignore, large vertical displays. The displays show the faces of people dialing in by videoconference so virtual participants are on the same footing as those physically present. In a handful of locations around the world, Google is building outdoor work areas to respond to concerns that coronavirus easily spreads in traditional offices. At its Silicon Valley headquarters, where the weather is pleasant most of the year, it has converted a parking lot and lawn area into “Camp Charleston” — a fenced-in mix of grass and wooden deck flooring about the size of four tennis courts with Wi-Fi throughout. There are clusters of tables and chairs under open-air tents. In larger teepees, there are meetings areas with the décor of a California nature retreat and state-of-the-art videoconferencing equipment. Each tent has a camp-themed name such as “kindling,” “s’mores” and “canoe.” Camp Charleston has been open since March for teams who wanted to get together. Google said it was building outdoor work spaces in London, Los Angeles, Munich, New York and Sydney, Australia, and possibly more locations. Employees can return to their permanent desks on a rotation schedule that assigns people to come into the office on a specific day to ensure that no one is there on the same day as their immediate desk neighbors. Despite the company’s freewheeling corporate culture, coming into the office regularly had been one of Google’s few enduring rules. That was a big reason Google offered its lavish perks, said Allison Arieff, an architectural and design writer who has studied corporate campuses. “They get to keep everyone on campus for as long as possible and they’re keeping someone at work,” said Ms. Arieff, who was a contributing writer for the Opinion section of The New York Times. But as Google’s work force topped 100,000 employees all over the world, face-to-face collaboration was often impossible. Employees found it harder to focus with so many distractions inside Google’s open offices. The company had outgrown its longtime setup. In 2018, Google’s real estate group began to consider what it could do differently. It turned to the company’s research and development team for “built environments.” It was an eclectic group of architects, industrial and interior designers, structural engineers, builders and tech specialists led by Michelle Kaufmann, who worked with the renowned architect Frank Gehry before joining Google a decade ago. Google focused on three trends: Work happens anywhere and not just in the office; what employees need from a workplace is changing constantly; and workplaces need to be more than desks, meeting rooms and amenities. “The future of work that we thought was 10 years out,” Ms. Kaufmann said, “Covid brought us to that future now.” Two of the most rigid elements in an office design are walls and the heating and cooling systems. Google is trying to change that. It is developing an array of different movable walls that can be packed up and shipped flat to offices around the world. It has a prototype of a fabric-based overhead air duct system that attaches with zippers and can be moved over a weekend for different seating arrangements. Google is also trying to end the fight over the office temperature. This system allows every seat to have its own air diffuser to control the direction or amount of air blowing on them. If a meeting requires privacy, a robot that looks like the innards of a computer on wheels and is equipped with sensors to detect its surroundings comes over to inflate a translucent, cellophane balloon wall to keep prying eyes away. “A key part of our thinking is moving from what’s been our traditional office,” said Ms. Kaufmann. Google is also trying to reduce distractions. It has designed different leaf-shaped partitions called “petals” that can attach to the edge of a desk to eliminate glare. An office chair with directional speakers in the headrest plays white noise to muffle nearby audio. For people who may no longer require a permanent desk, Google also built a prototype desk that adjusts to an employee’s personal preferences with a swipe of a work badge — a handy feature for workers who don’t have assigned desks because they only drop into the office once in a while. It calibrates the height and tilt of the monitor, brings up family photos on a display, and even adjusts the nearby temperature. In the early days of the pandemic, “it seemed daunting to move a 100,000-plus person organization to virtual, but now it seems even more daunting to figure out how to bring them back safely,” said David Radcliffe, Google’s vice president for real estate and workplace services. In its current office configurations, Google said it would be able to use only one out of every three desks in order to keep people six feet apart. Mr. Radcliffe said six feet would remain an important threshold in case of the next pandemic or even the annual flu. Psychologically, he said, employees will not want to sit in a long row of desks, and also Google may need to “de-densify” offices with white space such as furniture or plants. The company is essentially unwinding years of open-office plan theory popularized by Silicon Valley — that cramming more workers into smaller spaces and taking away their privacy leads to better collaboration. Real estate costs for the company aren’t expected to change very much. Though there will be fewer employees in the office, they’ll need more room. There will be other changes. The company cafeterias, famous for their free, catered food, will move from buffet style to boxed, grab-and-go meals. Snacks will be packed individually and not scooped up from large bins. Massage rooms and fitness centers will be closed. Shuttle buses will be suspended. Smaller conference rooms will be turned into private work spaces that can be reserved. The offices will use only fresh air through vents controlled by its building management software, doing away with its usual mix of outside and recirculated air. In larger bathrooms, Google will reduce the number of available sinks, toilets and urinals and install more sensor-based equipment that doesn’t require touching a surface with hands. A pair of new buildings on Google’s campus, now under construction in Mountain View, Calif., and expected to be finished as early as next year, will give the company more flexibility to incorporate some of the now-experimental office plans. Google is trying to get a handle on how employees will react to so-called hybrid work. In July, the company asked workers how many days a week they would need to come to the office to be effective. The answers were divided evenly in a range of zero to five days a week, said Mr. Radcliffe. The majority of Google employees are in no hurry to return. In its annual survey of employees called Googlegeist, about 70 percent of roughly 110,000 employees surveyed said they had a “favorable” view about working from home compared with roughly 15 percent who had an “unfavorable” opinion. Another 15 percent had a “neutral” perspective, according to results viewed by The New York Times. The survey was sent out in February and the results were announced in late March. Many Google employees have gotten used to life without time-consuming commutes, and with more time for family and life outside of the office. The company appears to be realizing its employees may not be so willing to go back to the old life. “Work-life balance is not eating three meals at a day at your office, going to the gym there, having all your errands done there,” said Ms. Arieff. “Ultimately, people want flexibility and autonomy and the more that Google takes that away, the harder it is going to be.” Google has offices in 170 cities and 60 countries around the world, and some of them have already reopened. In Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan and Vietnam, Google’s offices have reopened with occupancy allowed to exceed 70 percent. But the bulk of the 140,000 employees who work for Google and its parent company, Alphabet, are based in the United States, with roughly half of them in the Bay Area.
