Demand for Inorganic Salts To Remain Highest in Asia-Pacific (APAC)
To most people, ‘salt’ simply means table salt, or sodium chloride. However, the word has a specific meaning in chemistry, hence denotes a wide array of compounds, almost all of them powders. In technical terms, any compound that has a cation (positively charged atom) bonded to an anion (negatively charged atom), such that the net charge of the molecule is 0, is a salt. In the simplest form, a salt can be produced by reacting an acid with a base (alkali).
According to P&S Intelligence, the inorganic salts market is expected to display a 6.5% CAGR during 2024–2030, to reach USD 290.8 billion by 2030 from an estimated USD 188.6 billion in 2023. Inorganic salts are those that do not contain a carbon–hydrogen bond. In fact, the majority of the industrially used salts are inorganic. They are used as raw materials, intermediates, and final products in a variety of applications, such as fertilizers, food and beverage products, construction chemicals, healthcare, cosmetics, and personal care and homecare products. Hence, due to such a wide application area of such compounds, their consumption keeps on growing.
Tumblr media
Such chemicals can be classified both on the basis of their cation and anion. For instance, sodium chloride can be classified both as a sodium salt and a chloride salt. This makes the segregation of these compounds based on their application a little easier. For instance, phosphate salts, specifically diammonium phosphate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (also known as monoammonium phosphate), are majorly used in fertilizers. Similarly, silicate salts are widely consumed in the glass industry; silica being the major raw material that goes into the production of glass.
Moreover, sodium chloride finds application in several cosmetic products, such as oral hygiene products, fragrance, shampoos, skin, nail, hair, cleansing, makeup and bath products, and suntans. Further, two of the major ingredients of shampoos are sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate. Similarly, the key ingredients of toothpastes are calcium carbonate, calcium hydrogen phosphates, and sodium fluoride. Additionally, calcium carbonate is used in dietary calcium supplements, antacids, and medicinal tablets.
In the same way, titanium dioxide is a major component of paints and coatings as it gives them their white color. Hence, as construction activities burgeon around the world, the demand for paints and coatings will grow, which will drive the consumption of titanium dioxide. Another key material that is witnessing a booming demand with the growing construction sector is steel. It is used widely as a structural element in buildings, bridges, and towers. Its burgeoning consumption is propelling the demand for aluminum oxide, or alumina, which is used as a refractory, the bricks that line the furnaces.
Moreover, a large volume of inorganic salts isn’t used itself, but to extract their base mineral. Many important metals do not exist in the elemental stage, but as oxides and sulphides. For instance, iron exists as ferrous oxide and ferric oxide, while copper, which is also available in its native (elemental) state, is usually extracted from cuprite (cupric oxide) and chalcolite (copper [I] sulphide). Similarly, bauxite contains aluminum in the form of hydroxide salts. In the same way, calcium is usually mined from calcium carbonate (marble), while silver is found in the form of silver sulphide.
Currently, Asia-Pacific (APAC) is the largest inorganic salts market because of its massive chemical industry. The demand for pharmaceuticals, paints and coatings, personal care products, food and beverage products, and fertilizers is booming in the region, which is propelling the demand for a variety of inorganic salts. For instance, the growing automotive sales and construction activities are propelling the demand for paints and coatings, while the rising prevalence of several diseases is driving the consumption of pharmaceuticals. As all these products contain some or the other inorganic salts, their increasing demand is driving that of the latter.
Therefore, with the widening industrial production, the demand for inorganic salts will rise.

Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) is a chemical that is also referred to as water glass. It is available in liquid and powder forms and is made up of silica (SiO2) and sodium oxide (Na2O). Historically, sodium silicate has been used in a range of applications, from adhesives to water treatment. Its versatility and beneficial properties have now found a place in concrete finishing. When applied to concrete surfaces, sodium silicate reacts chemically to form a hard, durable layer, significantly improving the concrete's overall performance.
How Sodium Silicate Enhances Concrete Durability
The primary way that sodium silicate improves concrete is by forming calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) when it reacts with the calcium hydroxide present in the concrete. An increasingly robust and dense surface layer is created as a result of this chemical reaction. Sodium silicate penetrates deep into the concrete, filling pores and capillaries. This reduces porosity, making the concrete more resistant to water, chemicals, and abrasion. The result is a surface that is significantly more durable and longer-lasting than untreated concrete.
Applications of Sodium Silicate in Concrete Finishing
Sodium silicate can be used in various concrete finishing applications to achieve different benefits.
Surface Sealing: Sodium silicate acts as an excellent sealer, protecting concrete surfaces from water infiltration, chemical spills, and wear. This makes it ideal for industrial and commercial floors where durability is crucial.
Dust-proofing: By reducing surface dusting, sodium silicate improves cleanliness and air quality in environments such as warehouses and factories.
Enhancing Appearance: The smooth, glossy texture of surfaces treated with sodium silicate improves the visual appeal of concrete floors. It is, therefore, a well-liked option for applications involving ornamental concrete.
Benefits of Using Sodium Silicate in Concrete Finishing
Using sodium silicate in concrete finishing offers several key benefits: Longevity: Treated surfaces last longer due to increased resistance to wear, chemicals, and weathering. This extends the lifespan of concrete floors and reduces the need for frequent repairs.
Cost-effectiveness: The long-term savings in maintenance and replacement expenses make sodium silicate treatment a cost-effective approach, even though the initial expenditure may be larger than with traditional therapies.
Environmental Benefits: Sodium silicate is a low-VOC (volatile organic compound) material, making it an environmentally friendly option. Its durability also means less frequent replacements, contributing to sustainability.
Improved Aesthetics: The smooth, glossy finish provided by sodium silicate enhances the visual appeal of concrete floors, making them suitable for both functional and decorative purposes.
Comparing Sodium Silicate with Other Concrete Finishing Agents
When compared to traditional concrete sealers and hardeners, sodium silicate stands out for several reasons: Performance: Sodium silicate provides superior hardness and durability compared to epoxy and polyurethane sealers. Its ability to penetrate deeply into the concrete ensures long-lasting protection.
Environmental Impact: Sodium silicate has a lower environmental impact due to its low VOC content and long-lasting nature.
Cost-Benefit Analysis: While other sealers may have lower upfront costs, the longevity and reduced maintenance needs of sodium silicate-treated surfaces offer more significant long-term savings.
Application Techniques for Sodium Silicate in Concrete Finishing
To achieve optimal results with sodium silicate, proper application techniques are essential: Surface Preparation: Clean and repair the concrete surface to remove any dirt, grease, or loose particles. This ensures better penetration and bonding of the sodium silicate.
Application Methods: Sodium silicate can be applied using sprayers, brushes, or rollers. The choice of method depends on the size and nature of the surface being treated.
Best Practices: Apply the solution evenly and allow adequate time for it to react and penetrate the surface. Multiple coats may be necessary for optimal results.
Safety Considerations: Handle sodium silicate with care, using appropriate protective equipment. Store it properly to maintain its effectiveness.
Future Trends in Sodium Silicate-Based Concrete Finishing
The future of sodium silicate in concrete finishing looks promising, with ongoing innovations and market trends pointing towards increased adoption. Review of Glint by VDIVOV's Highlighter in #03 Chrome Baby
Glint by VDVIVOV is a Korean brand well known for its award-winning highlighters. Their tagline is "Glint, the moment you shine!" Their powder highlight line has 5 different kinds including this one, Chrome Baby (blush with pearl glow), Dewy Moon (natural glow), Diamond Veil (light glow; review), Dewy Moon (natural glow; review), Milky Moon (cool-toned milky glow), and Pitch Moon (peach glow). Their Dewy Moon baked powder highlighter is a bright beige color that provides a natural gently glowing glow. This highlighter retails for between $14-30 USD, you can get it here for $17 + shipping.
Ingredients
Mica, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Silica, Titanium Dioxide, Octyldodecanol, Dimethicone, Diphenyl Dimethicone/Vinyl Diphenyl Dimethicone/Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Red Iron Oxide (CI 77491), Glycerin, Magnesium Myristate, HDI/Trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Isopropyl Palmitate, Ultramarines (CI 77007), Pentylene Glycol, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Polysorbate 20, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Acrylamide/Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Sorbitan Olivate, Sorbitan Stearate, Isohexadecane, Ethylhexylglycerin, Polysorbate 80, Sorbitan Oleate, Tocopherol, Tin Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Potassium Sorbate, Red 30 (CI 73360)
To quickly note, I received this for free from Picky and Glint in exchange for my honest review.
Tumblr media
The highlight contains 5.6 grams (0.19 oz) and comes in sturdy plastic packaging.
Tumblr media
The highlighter has a very pinky-red shade and it has a dry, almost flaky feeling texture.
Tumblr media
The reflects here are gold with a pinky-red base.
Tumblr media
This shade is very blushy on the skin and would also make a great blush topper.
Recommended use is to apply a light touch with your fingertips or use a brush. The more you apply, the more dramatic the glow. After using, and comparing their other shades, this is a pretty bold color, it's very stunning. The texture of this highlight is also different than Dewy Moon, as mentioned above, it's got more of a flaky, a tiny bit crumbly texture, so there is some fallout from this product. And it's also easy to pick up too much product on your brush so maybe tap off the excess if you want to tone down the highlight. I don't personally wear blush but I believe this would make a great one and I may try it that way at some point. This highlight has more product than Dewy Moon and Diamond Veil so I believe this will last longer if it's just used as a highlight. I could kind of compare this to Nars Orgasm X powder blush or potentially Milani's baked blush in Corallina. The highlight is pretty long wearing and melts into the skin pretty well. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a very coral-ly pinky red highlight or blush/blush topper.
What I like: it's a very beautiful shade and can double as a blush or blush topper, the shade is very pretty and it melts into the skin nicely. What I don't like: I do find that the highlight can emphasize texture a little bit but otherwise no issues.
Pros:
Vibrant
Multi-use
Beautiful
Glowy
Long-wearing
Cons:
Can emphasize texture
Would I buy this?
Yes
Rating: 9.5/10
