The Shared Burdens of Grief

The witch's hut lied cold and silent, an abandoned testament to the evils of a lonely, mad woman and the suffering she had caused. Her victims, those who had survived at least, had all fled after Spiru had defeated the witch, but not everyone she had turned to jade had survived to be freed.

Sully's sobs broke Spiru out of her reverie, and she turned back to face the dwarf. He'd finished burying the shattered remains of his beloved raccoon, Socks. They'd found him in pieces, either deliberately smashed or accidentally dropped, it didn't matter in the end. Sully had insisted on digging the grave himself for the jade fragments. Spiru took a place at his side, as Sully loudly blew his nose into a kerchief.

"Yeh don't have to be here for this, Spiru. I know everyone thinks I'm being ridiculous, mourning a raccoon I'd only known a few days."

Spiru shook her head. "I have only known -you- a few days, Sully, and I find myself attached to you. You cared for Socks, and Socks is gone, it makes sense to mourn. And it makes sense to not let a friend mourn alone," she continued, leaning into Sully's side in a half hug.

Sully patted the gnome's shoulder, careful not to apply too much pressure. He'd learned quickly she wasn't the biggest fan of being touched. "I appreciate that, Spiru. I'm glad to have you as a friend. I'm sure Socks would have... would have loved...." Sully trailed off as he began to cry again, leaving Spiru to gently pat him as he worked through his grief over his lost pet.

another entry into the endless discussion of how long it takes to knit a sock.

it's not bound off because i wasn't sure if my kid would want some 1x1 ribbing at the top, but they say no thank you, so this is it done. i bound off just now and it took less than ten minutes.

we watched the extended edition lotr movies over the last few days, and i knit this whole we watched. i started out working on a jumper, but by the time frodo was leaving the shire, i'd realised that i didn't want to be faffing about with underarm stitches when they were, say, in the mines, so i grabbed some sock yarn and cast on for mindless knitting instead.

i was knitting a little intermittently, since i can't knit when crying uncontrollably, and we didn't watch all the credits, and also i started a bit after the movie did. the movies are about 11 hours and 40 minutes, including the credits. so the sock, beginning to end, took less than 11 hours of knitting, and honestly probably closer to ten.

socks are fast and easy, i swear! let 2024 be the year you let handknitting socks into your heart!

for some reason i almost never think to post knitting here, so it's time for a recent (ish—these are from august to now, if my camera's not lying about dates) socks roundup!

the sparkly stripes are both hobbii colourways. i don't love hobbii's sock yarn, honestly, and won't buy it again, but i'll crank out mindless socks from what i have.

the fairly bold rainbow socks are regia pairfect.

the green-blue are bfl that i dyed and spun; the blue ones are ones that i dyed on dyer supplier's merino/cashmere/nylon base.

the patterns were all basically variations on my standard sock recipe, though the last one got a little fancier. purple-orange, bold rainbow, and the blue ones all have proper heel flaps; blue-green have a mini-gusset of maybe five stitches; the pink-black ones have a short-row heel without a gusset.
