𝗜 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 Stray Kids’ “𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵”.

First i have to give u a heads up, it’s gonna be very very long. It is an 8 pages essay, just like Chan asked. I’m a simple girl. Whatever Chan asks, I’ll do.

Before you think you have no patience to read this, if you’re a Stay, ok i have nothing to say to you because: are you sure?

If you’re not a Stay but a young boy/girl struggling with this life, please watch the video and read this, because I promise you, it’s worth your time.

Okay here we go.

Stray Kids’ latest song Social Path is my new most favorite song of all time. I feel related to Chan and the lyrics on a personal level.

First, the song's title itself: "Social Path" is another way of saying for "Sociopath", which means "People who consistently disregard rules and social norms" and often "behave impulsively".

Obviously, in this song they don't mean it in a bad way, but in a way that they don't always follow social standards, which even though to some people it's the best way of living, this does not apply to everyone.

This does not apply to me as well, as sometimes I see myself not fitting in, and I’m not sorry. I’ve lived life the way I want, not following social standards. And people sometimes give me a hard time about it. Yet I keep going, because only I, know what is good for me, what I want to do and what kind of person I want to be.

That is why, word by word, the song speaks my heart.

Of course there have been times I’ve had doubts about the way I live my life. I sometimes wonder why I can’t be like others, live like others. But now, listening to this song, I feel like I’ve been living my life right. I have not “made it” yet, but I feel more inspired than ever to move towards my future.

(I will only write about lines that I think have a deeper/many layers of meaning or lines that I think need to be talked about – so not all lines are mentioned here)

𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩 – 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮

Why the path to his dream, or Stray Kids’ dream is called a “Social Path” when social standards is not something they live by?

It can be a way of saying, that to reach their dreams, they must live their lives under the “judging eyes” of society, or more specifically a huge part of society where people follow social norms and judge other base on social standards which is not right at all.

That to reach their dreams, they must overcome the uncertainty, the self-doubt and the temptation to “live like everyone else”.

That to reach their dreams, they must create their own “path” through “social” (society) where everyone else live the same way, follow the same standards. Not blend in them, but stand out, live differently, live passionately, live life how they want to.

Let’s look back at the MV where it started by them being surrounded by people, all has the same face (mask) on – implying that everyone else is the same and only they are different. These faces have exclamation mark, question mark, etc. on them – like all the toxic , judgmental words from society towards them just because they live their lives differently.

They are at first scared and hurt by it (the scenes on the bed with their personal shots). Run away from it (Seungmin). Then it changed by showing IN standing still while everyone else (society) running towards his opposite direction. Then Felix look directly to the camera like he’s no longer scared and is certain with his decision. Seungmin stopped running away. Hyunjin is no more scared and fiercely pushing through. And Lee Know make way, or rather make a “Social Path” through the crowds (again is society), shows that they are now confident to live life the way they want against all odds.

Let’s get to the meaning behind the lyrics.

𝗚𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗺𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

Chan gave up his teenager days to work hard for his future. Gave up being with his family in Australia. Gave up his everything to chase after his dream. He even gave up being a kid to be an adult too soon (I’m tearing up a little, just because I cried my eyes out many times before).

𝗜 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼

𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿

He was feeling helpless of his situation (being a trainee for 7 years long) and uncertain of his present, or he was even self-doubting his decision during the hard times. That’s why he want to be stronger in order to overcome all that to go forward till the very end.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗻𝗼𝘄?

𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁

He was feeling lost and uncertain. These feeling are expressed through long and lonely nights, just like in the MV it shows Changbin not sleeping well and all alone with all his nightmares and dark thoughts.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲

𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘁 (𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿)

Even though it's lonely and uncertain, even he’s facing his evil thoughts throughout the nights, the sun will rise and tomorrow will come.

"I won't miss it" this literally means he will not miss the sunrise and tomorrow, also on a deeper level, it means he will not "miss" (out on) this life. Because “when the sun rises, tomorrow will come”, life will go on. Why he must emphasize he will not miss it if it’s not because he had the intention to “miss it”? Yes, it is as dark as you are probably thinking right now, and he once said it on Chan’s room too:

The second sentence kinda makes it clear for you if the first sentence is not clear enough.

I still thank God to this day that he’s still here (even I’m not religious). I’m a Baby Stay and I only knew about this days ago, and I’ve just watched that Chan’s room episode only couple of days ago but I could’ve sworn I’ve been thanking God every-single-day for giving Chan the strength he needed to fight his dark thoughts, to endure and to wait till each of the members came.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗜 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗻…

The "youth" that everyone says he gave up on. What could it be? Is it more than just "youth" itself?

It could be the "standard way of living" that everyone else are talking about: study hard, get in to big colleges, get a nice degree, graduate, get a good corporate job, be a lawyer or a doctor they say. Giving up youth hear could mean give up that "social standard", give up that "life" that everyone saying you should live.

I’ve endured many temptations

The temptation to live life like everyone else, be like everyone else, to give up what he really wants - being an artist, make music and pursuit his passion and dream. It's really hard to be an artist and a successful one, we all know how competitive it gets and how harsh reality could be. He must've been tempted to give that up and live a normal life before, but he endured and overcame it.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴,

𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹, 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱

If you think he's weak, you're wrong. Because you know what, "Gold Can Get Harder, Not Softer, When Heated To High Temperatures". It means going through hardships (the furnace) only makes him stronger, not weaker.

"Increase the hardness, make it solid"

The more hardships he’s going through, the stronger he becomes.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

The stronger he becomes, the more strength he has to head towards his goals, his dream, his future, to the moment where he will feel "I made it", the moment that you won't have it for the second time (of course it's not literal meaning, it means moment that is so special that you feel you may not have it another time in life).

Side note: According to Stray Kids some time ago, they haven’t felt this yet but I believe they will feel it soon. They’re getting bigger every day and I’m madly proud.

𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗯𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘆

'𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 е𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻

This path is a lonely path because not everyone understands you and why you’re following it. Why you must choose the hard way to live not knowing what the future may hold. Reality could be really harsh on these young boys. They played a big game, either go big or go home. But “go home” can be much more difficult for idols compared to other careers, you know how Kpop industry is.

“Everyone keeps turning me down”

Who is “everyone”? I don’t dare to assume, but my guess everyone who can be around him at that time could be the company? They did not let him debut so yes that is a turn down, a rejection for the hard work and effort that he’s been putting in during his 7-year-long trainee. I’m sure, they had their reasons, so I’m not blaming here, I actually want to thank them for doing so. Because if he had debut earlier, he would not have met Stray Kids who basically saved him, he would not be THE leader that we all love. Who knows, he could’ve been the maknae of another group, and who knows, he could have not been “saved” – because you know, DEBUT was not what SAVED him, THE KIDS did. .. It brings me pain to even begin to think of “what if…”

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀

𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻

From a young boy living in the warm surroundings of his family and friends, is all he’s ever known – to being all alone in a country that he’s mostly unfamiliar with, with no familiar faces. And being an idol (even trainee) he has to do a lot of new things, be at countless new places and meet a lot of new people, which must’ve been overwhelming. And not all new faces are friendly. We all know this thing called “society” and what it could do. People judge, people hate, people make you feel less of yourself. People can be that bad. Chan must’ve had experienced all that coldness from society, where he had to be an adult too young too soon.

I want to give him the warmest hug in this world, or even this univer, so bad! Because I, personally, know how that feels.

𝗜'𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱, 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗵, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 ��𝗽 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄

Once again the feeling of being lost, the feeling of being different, being alone hits him hard. He feels like he’s the “alien”, he’s the only one that is different that is in a bad way to him. It almost felt like everyone wants him to give up, because, gosh, 7 years is such a long time. People come, people debut or get cut, the thing is everyone’s moving forward with something but not him.

He even mentioned once in Maniac tour (it’s that time when he said “I’m gonna protect everyone”) – staff once said to him that they feel so sad and sorry when they look at him. Not all people want him to give up because they don’t want good things for him, sometimes it’s because they care about him, but not in the way that’s actually good for him, not in the way that he wants.

Waking the demon that's hiding inside

“The demon that’s hiding inside” means his true, strong and beautiful self that has been silenced by others, by society. Now that “demon” will not hide anymore and will come out strong – just like he will not hesitate, self doubt, or worry about being different anymore, but will move forward with his decision and his dream – at full speed.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲, 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗜'𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲

𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴

I don’t think there’s any hidden meaning here. Just these lines confirmed what I mentioned above. No matter what others say, he’s ready to do whatever he wants because we only get to live one life.

The feeling he has at this moment is hard to explain, but if I have to choose one word, I’d say “𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆”. He’s certain about the decision he made, he’s certain about the path he’s taking, he knows he’s meant to follow his dream. What’s better than this feeling? It’s something that’s very hard to beat.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝘆

His passion towards his dream is so strong it burns all the way from the past till this moment. What is this ashes? What did his passion “burn”?

Literal speaking, of course when something burns there will be ashes haha. But this is Chan’s lyrics and I guess there’s always a deeper meaning.

“Ashes” here could be words that people say wanting him to give up or saying he should not do what he’s doing. It could be his “hesitation”, his “dark thoughts”, the “temptation” that he had. All the obstacles along the way was burnt down by his passion, because it is so strong it beats everything else.

There’s a saying that goes: “The hardest battle you'll ever fight, is against yourself”

Same for Chan, the biggest, hardest fight was not with others, but with himself. His self-doubt, the temptation, the uncertainty, the evil thoughts. All of that built up to make the journey to his dream much harder than it already is.

Because, you know what, when you trust yourself, have confidence in you, when you’re certain that you’re doing the right thing, when you know in your heart that this path you’re following is the right path, then, just then. No one else and nothing else can shake you anymore.

There is no way back, the only way is moving forward, to the dream that he’s been following.

“The torn map”

The map here could be his mindset. Sometimes it’s shaken, sometimes it’s uncertain, sometimes he feels lost, it means the “map” is torn, he will still piece it together as in pull himself together, set his mind straight again to “run towards the top” like what he did during his trainee days – no matter what hardships came his way – he has never given up.

𝗔𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘂𝗽

“Alone in a rugged place” means he is lost, you know, because “ the map is torn”, because he is shaken and uncertain. But still, he will “rise up” to be stronger and continue on the path that he chose.

Wow I wonder how Chan knows that precisely that 8 pages is what I’m gonna need to complete this essay?

I don’t know, I probably will have more to say later on, and I might make changes depends on what else pops up on my mind, but for now I can’t wait to share with you guys.

As a very very young Baby Stay, this is the first time ever I got to experience Stray Kids releasing a new song, and I’m super happy because guys, I can’t describe how much I love this song (maybe I just did by writing an 8-page long about it :)). So if you guys enjoy my writing (of course after you had the patience to finish reading it), then I will write more next time. Also, it would mean the world to me if you like and share it, hopefully Chan can see and maybe talk about it? Then my life would be complete.
