UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanathi on Friday said that public figures may become a subject of “media trial” if they are not alert about the social media which has gained immense prominence in past few years. Social Media Lives of Teens

For many teens, social media is very much like the real world. It no longer a separate realm, a part of fictional cyber reality, but a platform in which your posts can affect your real life.

As the article Like. Flirt. Ghost: A JOURNEY INTO THE SOCIAL MEDIA LIVES OF TEENS states: “For teens, texts and snaps and video calls are real life, the equivalent of walking around in the mall for hours in the olden times, trying to catch the eye of a hottie in the food court”.

 Social media are no longer just communication platforms. They are a mean for teenagers to express their individuality, flirt and experience lives of their friends and attractive strangers.

Nowadays, having a smartphone in high school is a must and social hierarchies are based on how many likes a person has on Facebook and Instagram. Those who are less interested in “cyber reality” are seen as outsiders and lone-wolf individuals unwilling to become a part of their school’s cliques.

That said, it is crystal clear that high school socializing changed drastically over the years. There is a huge generation gap even between two people who are just five years apart.

Since social media now overlaps with reality,  there are certain rules and etiquette that must be followed. I must admit that although I am a Millennial, I was completely unaware of some of those rules such as that ghosting is okay or that you must like your friend’s selfies and always comment on them if you are close. 

The part of the article that shocked me the most is that some of the teens have a second Instagram profile, under a different username, in which they post pictures in which they are drinking alcohol or doing drugs. This allows them to lead ‘double lives’ and create a profile in which they can show a negative face without a fear of being criticized by their family and friends. 

 Interestingly, the thing that changed the most is the flirting habits. The article claims that nowadays, it is okay to send someone a DM but then switch to Snapchat and communicate in pictures in order not to let the conversation run stale.  When I was a teenager, we did not use social media as much and texting was the most popular way to talk to your crush, apart from talking face to face. 

 This brings us to the emergence of “hookup culture, a social phenomenon the media blames on teens and their excessive use of social media. Hookup culture is presented as a new way of social interaction that did not exist before. 

 But....

 Although social media might by itself be more liberating when it comes to flirting, it is in fact even more conservative than the methods used by older generations. It is true that many teenagers engage in sexting and sending provocative text messages. However, social media liaisons rarely result in actual hookups. Teenagers can now meet and flirt with more people online but they rarely meet each other in real life. They are blamed for hookup culture because it might seem to an uninformed observer, that teenagers are becoming more and more promiscuous. However, hookup culture always existed only it was carefully concealed.

The truth is that the teen pregnancy is at its historical low. Adolescents now know much more about sex and how to protect themselves then our parents. Before, people were meeting more and were usually keeping those “hookup” interactions a secret.

 The only difference with newer generations is that they are unable to distinguish social media from real life. In the past, texting and sending letters was as equally important as now but it was clear to everyone that messaging is by no means a substitute for real-life social interaction.

 The saddest part is that my generation was among the last ones to play on the streets after high school or hang out at school’s backyard. Today, there where used to be sounds of laugh and cheer of teenagers talking in the cafes and parks, there is just a breath of emptiness, an unfulfillable void. 

 Even if I see some teenagers together they are usually on their phones, never talking, just typing and browsing the internet.

 Today, everyone feels that they are entitled to know everything about someone else’s life and that ‘oversharing of one’s life on social media is acceptable and even a good practice.

 Maybe teens are so reluctant to engage in real life conversation because social media destroyed the concept of ‘staying mysterious’  since it allows you to easily access information about a potential partner or a new friend on his/her profile.

 If you know everything about someone, what is there to talk about when you actually meet?
