AI is here to stay. Now we need to ensure everyone benefits
by Juliet A. Gerrard, Kyle Webster, Stuart McNaughton, and Tahu Kukutai
Specialist machine learning and narrow AI could help us to start removing the “four Ds” - dirty, dull, difficult, dangerous - from our daily work. from www.shutterstock.com, CC BY-ND
Artificial intelligence (AI) is already in use in many sectors. Its contribution is expected to rise steadily, driven by advances in data storage, computer processing power and connectivity.
Following last week’s report on AI by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA), the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi today launches a report that focuses on the opportunities and risks the “fourth industrial revolution” might bring to Aotearoa New Zealand.
AI, in all its applications, is predicted to contribute some US$15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. This represents roughly the combined GDP of China and India in 2018.
Australia and New Zealand are yet to develop national AI strategies. The reports look 20 years ahead, which is a useful period for policy development. The explicit focus on well-being provides a helpful frame to start national conversations about how to embrace these new technologies, leading rather than passively accepting advances from offshore.
AI in New Zealand
New Zealand has started to adopt AI in the government sector, with most government agencies employing some form of it. There are advantages in New Zealand’s small size and strong legal frameworks to develop protocols for data ethics and security, and intellectual property, and to nurture a diverse AI-savvy workforce.
Placing equity at the centre of the conversation means that we can choose to adopt AI technologies across education, government and industry in the context of public good. This would mitigate the risk of importing biases from offshore algorithms and allow us to identify areas where AI can benefit all New Zealanders, rather than a small international elite.
Within the reports’ 20-year horizon, specialist machine learning and narrow AI (a specific type of AI that outperforms humans in a very narrowly defined task) will help us to start removing the “four Ds” – dirty, dull, difficult, dangerous – from our daily work. Instead, we will be able to use machines to free people up to use their originality, creativity and questioning abilities.
It is unlikely that machines will challenge these skills in this time frame. Artificial general intelligence, which could compete with these more human forms of cognition, is likely many decades away. By focusing on this nearer-term future, the ACOLA report makes concrete recommendations on strategic investment, regulatory mechanisms, equity and respect for intrinsic human rights, while calling for a national strategy to bring these approaches together.
What AI could do for New Zealand
A recent New Zealand government report signalled that AI-driven automation and optimisation could result in economic gains in productivity. Think drones applying herbicides in an orchard, identifying weeds through AI-driven vision recognition systems, then feeding the data into a central system. This could mean less herbicide use, better farm productivity and environmental outcomes, and fewer people operating herbicide sprayers (at least in the way they do currently).
But the predicted gains in productivity are not without risks. Estimates of the proportion of jobs likely to be automated by AI vary wildly. So do estimates of the degree to which those will be replaced by new jobs. Some of these new jobs are currently difficult to imagine. Consider someone preparing for a career as a social media manager back in 2000, four years before Facebook was founded.
Foresight will be key to building a resilient and adaptable workforce. Key skills in STEM subjects (especially maths), coupled with strong foundations in the humanities, will be important. AI experts agree that, as AI technologies are implemented at scale, the key concern is the rate at which they may disrupt work and drive inequalities in income and employment opportunities.
Even if the former orchard sprayer is able to find another job, they are unlikely to get a direct financial payoff in the same way that the owners of the farm will. Multiplied thousands of different ways across New Zealand’s economy, these AI-driven changes threaten to widen inequities. Research related to this issue, for example at the Centre for AI and Public Policy (CAIPP), will need to feed into policy.
Other risks of AI
Economic effects are just one part of the story. The reports raise several issues, including lethal autonomous weapons, threats to democratic decision making and the disturbing gender imbalance in the rapidly growing AI workforce. The discussions fit into a wider body of recent work on AI relevant to New Zealand. This includes an analysis of the government’s use of predictive systems, establishment of the OECD principles on AI and a report on the state of the industry in New Zealand. This work identifies an urgent need for clear principles for the use of AI and state regulation for socially accepted use and standards.
The ACOLA report discusses many aspects of AI relevant to our responsibilities under the Treaty of Waitangi. AI technologies need to be developed to augment critical thinking and social and emotional skills at all levels, and in a culturally inclusive context. An important implication, consistent with the government’s focus on well-being, is the need to closely monitor societal impacts.
The report also identifies where New Zealand could contribute to the global conversation, including in indigenous data sovereignty. Groups such as Te Mana Raraunga and Te Hiku Media actively explore how tikanga (Māori customary system of values and practices) should be applied to these emerging technologies.
As the ACOLA report notes:
An AI strategy that places equity at its forefront will strengthen Aotearoa New Zealand’s international reputation in this arena and ensure that Aotearoa New Zealand is not left behind by some of the most important developments of the 21st century.
Overall, we see enormous potential for transformative opportunities, from intelligent tutoring systems in education through to precision agriculture. These could improve well-being across all sectors of society, government, agriculture and industry.
Realising this potential will require addressing the substantial challenges inherent in ensuring a fair and equitable transition into an AI-enabled future, making sure that benefits also reach those at risk of being excluded.

5 Powerful Reasons To Add Video Content To Your Marketing Strategy
5 Powerful Reasons To Add Video Content To Your Marketing Strategy
Customer expectations are evolving fast, and you need to adapt your marketing strategy to keep up. It’s all about finding innovative ways to grab the drifting attention of potential customers – before someone else does.
Static ads are easily ignored, but video marketing is one of the easiest, most effective strategies for delivering messages that entertain and catch those all-important customer eyes. According to Wyzowl’s State of Video Marketing Survey, 86% of businesses use video as a major marketing tool for their brand, and 92% of marketers who used video say it’s now a crucial part of their marketing strategy.
Boosted by the global pandemic, consumer demand for video content has reached unprecedented levels. There’s never been a better time for marketers to embrace video. But if you’re still undecided, here are 5 powerful reasons to add video content to your marketing strategy.
5 Powerful Reasons To Add Video Content To Your Marketing Strategy
Customers actively seek out video: According to Social Media Week, 78% of people watch online videos every week, and 55% of people engage with videos every day. And in great news for marketers, Hubspot studies show that customers want to see more videos from the business and brands they support. Video is an excellent storytelling tool and resonates more deeply with consumers than text marketing. So when you share your brand’s mission and vision through video, there’s every chance your message will be shared to a far wider audience. (You may not reach all of the approximately 4.19 million New Zealanders on Youtube in 2022, but with the right video, you never know!)
Videos make your website sticky (in a good way): According to one Forbes report, users spend 88% more time on websites with videos. It’s not rocket science; videos are just more entertaining. And when people are entertained, they’re actively engaging with, and more likely to retain, the information you’re presenting. Here, at Tell My Story (Auckland’s Top-Ranked Video Production Company), we offer video production services for all kinds of marketing and corporate videos. And in our experience, it’s the product demos, how-tos and explainer videos that deliver some of the most dramatic results. That’s the kind of content that doesn’t just boost your chances of reaching your target audience, it also significantly decreases bounce rates, and increases page session rates.
Video content is future proof: Tech developments like 5G are making video delivery both faster and smoother. 5G means you don’t need to hold-back on the colourful, in-depth visuals – because they’ll be delivered seamlessly every time, whether people are viewing on their laptop or their mobile. But it’s not just about speed. From augmented to virtual reality, 5G is making interactive video formats more accessible for marketers who want their brand to really stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s a 360-degree walk-through or product guide – or a try-before-you-buy shopping site – VR video content is already the norm for many consumers. Those highly immersive video experiences are set to grow and grow and as they do, prices will fall and fall. So, soon brands of all sizes will be able to enjoy the increased watch counts and watch times that VR brings to video content.
Video enhances SEO: Combining the right SEO strategies with the right videos, can help to vastly increase organic traffic to your website. Choose the right video platform, write catchy and keyword-optimised titles and descriptions, add an engaging thumbnail and make sure you add your video to the relevant, SEO-optimised page. And in addition to optimising titles and video descriptions, AI transcription means that you can also speedily transcribe your video’s audio, adding another SEO-friendly layer to your content.
Video boosts conversion rates: According to HubSpot’s Ultimate List of Marketing Statistics 2022, product videos increase the chance of purchase by an impressive 144%…and no, that’s not a typo, we checked! At Tell My Story, we know exactly how effective a product video can be. That’s why we typically suggest our clients add explainer videos to their product or services page. Video Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) techniques can help you push that figure even higher. Optimise video placement by posting your video to the most relevant platform or channel. This could vary from video to video and could be your landing page, your YouTube channel, your product page or another social media site. You can also optimise video type, add clickable links and use marketing automation to scale your marketing efforts. CRO can be tricky, so we’re always happy to offer advice. Conclusion: The world of marketing is evolving at incredible speeds, and video content is leading the way. Savvy marketers are quickly adapting their strategies to include video marketing as a powerful tool to help drive conversion rates and to reach and maintain strong relationships with potential and existing customers. We understand that video production and marketing might sound complicated, but with the right video production and marketing team, (like us, at Tell My Story, for example), the complicated suddenly becomes simple. Our team of expert video producers, storytellers and video editors create and deliver narratives that engage your customers and compel them to take action.

Bathhouse concept
With AUT”s WW building being in the heart of Auckland City and in walking distance of two large university campuses, I’ve decided to design the bathhouse as a place that encourages relaxation and is a place to escape stress. Along side the concept of creating a calming environment I was inspired by how a lot of traditional bathing occurred outside or in open air spaces, such as the Japanese onsen, the Roman baths and even our own Pink and white Terraces. I decided to incorporate nature inspired aspects that work to calm us because of this. Natural light, sunset lamps, native plants, a rain shower and even sensory deprivation tanks are some ideas that will be included.
Optimising natural light was something I wanted to do right from visiting the site, but I didn’t want to sacrifice privacy due to the building being close to many others and there being a good amount of foot traffic. To solve this instead of having windows along the side of the building I would extend the ceiling with skylights and would also include the sunset lamps to create a warm natural feel inside instead of other stark artificial lights. There are so many benefits of natural light that make it the most important aspect of my design, exposure to natural light throughout the day is linked to energy, mood, sleep, boosts morale, improves motivation and promotes feelings of peace and calm.
People on the ground wasn’t the only issue of privacy, people could also look down into the baths as well so I have chosen a textured glass that looks like rippled water to be the skylights, this type of glass doesn’t reduce any light inside the building and warps anything that is behind it so no one can see. Privacy is important because for many people being seen or potentially watched while in a vulnerable state such as bathing can be stressful, so this is why I needed to increase the privacy.
Its commonly known now that plants indoors can make a large difference in relieving stress, they will help regulate humidity and increase levels of positivity — seeing greenery and nature helps us feel more relaxed and calm creating the environment I am aiming for.
The idea of a rain shower has a few different ways of creating calm. The idea is to make it so that people are almost required to walk through the fall to reach the pools, this would encourage leaving phones or work in lockers before entering the water. There is so much on our phones that can be stressful, from work to social media and it is important to take breaks for ourselves every now and then. The rain shower would also create a soft falling water sound like rain that would be heard throughout the building. This sound of rain can have a calming effect on the listener, it creates a sound sleep researchers and psychologists call 'pink noise'. It's a sort of natural sedative to busy minds and helps block out other sensory input like sirens, traffic or general city noise.
Unlike the sound of rain sensory deprivation tanks are dark and soundproof. As you float in the salt water there may be benefits, such as muscle relaxation, better sleep, and decreased stress and anxiety. Perfect for students or stressed visitors to take time for themselves and relax.

What Goes Into Creating A Great Blog
If you want your blogs to work for you in 2019, there are a few things you're going to have to get right. Communicating with your target audience and your customers has never been so valuable and showcasing what your business does and how you go about supporting the people you work with every day is marketing gold, and blogging is the way it's done.
What I have noticed over time and in creating our own blogs is the real value we offer our readers and when you start to think about that, you get a real sense of the enormity of what actually goes into your work every day. Now, let's cut to the chase here, the main reason we're all blogging is to generate traffic to our website design. In the beginning, we don't have thousands of followers, but that's ok. Carry on creating great content, and your audience numbers will grow, trust me. The crucial goal here is to add value, proper value that helps the people reading your blog to solve the real issues they're facing, so just focus on that in the beginning. Let's break it down further and talk about how to start blogging.
Strategy
Putting together a blog content strategy is extremely important. Considering the amount of time and effort that goes into writing blog posts, you want to make sure it works for you. To work for you, it has to reach your target audience, and it has to help the people taking the time to read it genuinely. An excellent place to start is looking at your competition. Take the time to go through all their material, study their methods, their writing style, the kinds of pictures they use and the keywords they go after. Your aim then is to go to one step further by doing it better, much better. By working to a written blog content strategy, you are on the path to success, you have an advantage, and that will pay dividends over time.
A strategy is going to save you hours because you are only going to be working on content you know is going to pay dividends, writing about topics your readers want to know more about and answering the kinds of questions people want answers to. So, with your strategy, you should have these three questions in mind;
what kind of content are people genuinely looking for?
what is the purpose of creating this content?
How does this content help in achieving the goals we've set for ourselves?
Setting your goals
The goals you set will come from the following questions you have to ask yourself. I'm creating my blog because I want
To push traffic to the website
To generate leads, increase prospects and sales
To educate site visitors on the services the business offers
To showcase the work, we do for our customers
To further build on the brand
Once you have identified your reason for going ahead and creating your blog, you now have to take the time to think about what kind of content you want to talk about. A few right questions you may wish to consider;
Where does my target audience spend their time, what social media platforms do they like to use, are there forums or online groups they belong to
Can you identify common issues, problems across particular industries
Which posts are more widely read and followed?
By identifying what your target audience is searching for, you'll be in a much better position to provide the answers for which they seek. If you can provide solutions via your blog and website, then the traffic will come, and in turn, your search rankings will soar. while your initial thought was to start perhaps creating blogs around whatever came to mind, taking the time to develop a written blog content strategy will save you a lot of wasted time, and you'll taste success a lot sooner.
Competition
Before rushing straight off to create your first blog, you should look at what your competition has done in this space. You want to make sure that what you are going to create is going to hit the mark. Having a quick look around you'll be able to see what keywords are being targeted in your niche. A tool we use for this kind of job is SEMrush, it's a mine of information on not only what your competition is doing but on how your content is performing in general.
This is important as you need to know you're going after the right keywords in the first place. We know that web design and web design Auckland both get over 3000 hits a month on Google search, so we make sure we get those specific keywords into our content. SEMrush lets us see how our content is performing for those keywords and how we compare to the competition, making it an invaluable tool to have.
Writing Content
Long content works the best, you ideally want your blogs to be 1,800 words long. It's well documented that long content gets good results. Writing decent size blogs that go delve into the detail on how to solve problems will gain followers and followers that will appreciate your efforts and so will share your content with others. Remember what we said earlier, it's essential to have a strategy. So start thinking about what you are going to write about. Plan, research and begin developing content marketing ideas. Having ideas for future blogs allows you plenty of time to do the research, ready for you to make a start on the allotted day. A content calendar is going to be very helpful at this point. There are plenty of options out there. We've tried a number over the years but settled on the Hubspot platform. Not only does it give us a bird's eye view of our content but allows us to distribute our content via email marketing and social media. Making our lives a whole lot easier.
that's not to say you have to spend a fortune to get a content calendar in place, you could use Google calendar or Trello, both are great free options. Moving along, you've got your keywords in place, and you've filled out your calendar, so now all you have to do is sit down and write that blog. To create a well-crafted piece of content, you will need to; Make sure your article is easy to read, uses well-defined headers, subheaders and small paragraphs. Bullet points and quotes make it exciting and enjoyable to read. High-quality images are a must. There are several free photo library sites on the net these days, a perfect one and one I like to use from time to time is Unsplash. Or simply take your own. Just about everybody has a smartphone these days, and the camera quality is impressive. So there no excuses for not having high-quality images on your posts. Wordpress is the platform of choice for most serious and professional bloggers. We moved over to Wordpress a few years back, when we started to build our clients websites on the system. It's straightforward to use, and the SEO tools within Wordpress make it easy to rank your blogs. We also like the fact that it's effortless to incorporate video files. Video is huge right now, and all social media platforms are screaming out for it. We've found that the blogs that incorporate video do a lot better than those with just still images. We can tell from Google analytics that they have a lower bounce rate and get far more shares. People are visual, so it's time to get a handle on the visual side of your content marketing. Start incorporating video, it's the best advice I can give you.
SEO
Your blogs are the perfect tool for your search engine optimisation needs. By getting the right keywords into your well researched and freshly written content, it's going to get you that well deserved Google traffic. Let's not forget, your competition is doing what you are doing too. They've also done their due diligence and have spent time creating content. Now, yours has to be better, and by better I mean better researched, better written and using great pictures and videos to help tell your story.
If you are not currently ranking well, take a good long look at the content on your website and your current blog pages. Could they use an update, could you possibly do better now, I'm thinking that you could. With your keyword strategy in place and your content working for you, you'll notice your organic rankings will be moving up through Google search. Get into the habit of writing two to three blogs a week, and your rankings will transform. We've' seen it here. We have over 19 keywords on the first page of Google, all driving traffic to our web design. To get to this stage, we've identified what our prospects are looking for and where they are spending their time to learn more about the services we offer. Remember though your content has to add value, you want to solve your reader's problems. By creating compelling and helpful content you're going to keep readers and followers, and they are going to return, time and time again. Your competitors are going to try and do the same, so make sure your work is original, you want to make your work different. If your blog is authentic, people will read it. Being passionate about what you do, will allow the words to flow. It takes time, but it will come.
Equipment
You’re not going to need a lot of gear to write your blogs, but you are going to need some equipment to help you capture videos and photos to help you tell your story. I’ve put a list together below outlining the gear we use on a daily basis.
