German authorities say they believe there was an Islamist motive behind a knife attack at an anti-Islam rally in the southwestern German city of Mannheim on Friday during which a police officer was killed.

The federal prosecutor, Germany's highest prosecuting authority with responsibility for terrorism, espionage and international criminal law, is taking on the case due to its "particular importance," a spokeswoman said.

She said the suspected attacker, a 25-year-old Afghan national and nine-year German resident who was shot by police and remains in the hospital, is suspected to have wanted to prevent critics of Islam from exercising their right to freedom of expression.

The suspect, who reportedly had no criminal record and was not known to German law enforcement, faces possible charges of murder, attempted murder and five counts of serious bodily harm.

'Clear indications of an Islamist motive'

Justice Minister Marco Buschmann of the Free Democrats (FDP), the junior pro-business partner in Germany's current coalition government, wrote on the social network X, formerly Twitter, that there were "clear indications of an Islamist motive."

He added that "Islam belongs to Germany, but Islamism does not" and said that "the danger posed by religious fanaticism and radical Islamism remains large."

Other FDP politicians demanded that Muslim community groups do more to combat extremism.

"Islamic groups and clergy cannot duck away from the fight against Islamism," Konstantin Kuhle, chair of the FDP's parliamentary group, told German media on Tuesday.

Mannheim: Thousands gather to mourn

Meanwhile, around 8,000 people gathered in Mannheim on Monday to pay their respects to the 29-year-old police officer who on Sunday succumbed to injuries sustained from stab wounds.

The event was organized by a broad cross-section of Mannheim society including Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious leaders and local politicians.

"The death of this young person fills us all with grief, tears us apart and robs us of words," said local Catholic deacon Karl Jung, while Mustafa Aydinli, the imam of Mannheim's Muslim Community, called on citizens to stick together because "God wants us to live in peace."

Scholz to address parliament on security 

After saying on Sunday that he was "deeply dismayed" by the death of the police officer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is due to make a statement on national security to the German parliament, the Bundestag, on Thursday, according to a Chancellery letter seen by the German DPA news agency.

However, it's unclear whether the subject of Scholz's address will be domestic security in the wake of the attack in Mannheim or foreign policy following his recent decision to allow Ukraine to use German weapons to strike military targets within Russia's internationally-recognized borders.

High alert ahead of European elections and Euro 2024

Domestically, Germany has been on high alert for possible Islamist attacks since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023.

With European Parliamentary elections on June 9 and football's European Championships kicking off in Germany one week later, the country's domestic intelligence chief warned that the risk of such assaults is "real and higher than it has been for a long time."

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) told daily tabloid newspaper Bild that "we must defend ourselves against Islamist terrorism with determination" while Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) urged colleagues not to instrumentalize the attack by demanding tougher migration laws.

"If the aim of extremists, whether far-right or Islamist, is to split a free society, then the answer has to be that we answer together as a society," she said at an event in Düsseldorf organized by the local Rheinische Post newspaper on Monday evening.

"Of course I was deeply affected," she said of the Mannheim attack, but still urged German society and democracy not to allow itself to be "destroyed by hate, violence and murderous intent."

Around this magical time of the year, Brad Troemel used to post an Instagram advent calendar of his most popular memes. He doesn’t do that any longer but does regularly post carousels of found stories that are a brilliant portrait of our present and a rich resource. Presenting Image  (Term 2) Week 8: Workshop

Focusing on the following artists: Luke Willis Thompson/Thomas Ruff.

Looking at different installation strategies they employ when exhibiting work.  

Luke Willis Thompson (NZ/FJ)

Thompson, works across a range of mediums, including performance, sculpture and film, all of which allow him to push the limitations of object and space.

Luke of Fijian and European descent, frequently deals with the social implications of the ready-made – drawing from the biographical to inform his curatorial decision-making.  His work summons racial and class based discourse and is provocative in its physicality yet there is an elusive reasoning behind his choices and an ambiguity regarding the role of the audience and the artist.  Luke’s work is not only challenging for the viewer but it also sets a precedent for the institution of art – questioning agency of the artist and responsibility of the audience to create context within a work. http://www.tautai.org/artist/luke-willis-thompson/

Luke Willis Thompson - “Inthisholeonthisislandwhereiam” Winner of the Walters Prize (2014)

Thompson’s winning piece takes the form of a journey beginning in the exhibition spaces at the Auckland Art Gallery. It is an unusual and remarkable work that was described by Walters judge Charles Esche as an ‘extraordinary intrusion of art into daily life that cuts through the protocols of the exhibition system like a knife.’(ocula.com/magazine/conversations/luke-willis-thompson)

The work has a kind of tri-fold structure. It consists of the ferrying of audience members in a prepaid taxi from an emptied gallery or museum, through a choreographed route of the city, and arriving at a villa, that is lived in, but temporarily shared as an artwork. The work allows for an indeterminate amount of time to look through the house and its contents and the taxi will take you back to the gallery when you decide its ready to leave.

Exists in both tangible and intangible forms.

Exhibition as an immersive/Interactive experience.

Visceral/Emotive.

Viewer invited to engage.

Filtered view of reality.

Ambiguous as to the construction/Installation method/poses questions. Has it been deconstructed/reconstructed to create a fictional space of narrative and mythology?

Autoportrait (2017) - Luke Willis Thompson

(Turner Prize nomination for this particular work). 

Shot in 35mm, the black-and-white film shows the face of a silent Diamond Reynolds, who broadcast live on Facebook in the moments after her boyfriend, Philando Castile, was fatally shot by police in Minnesota in 2016.

Thompson has transformed the long corridors and towering ceilings of the gallery’s space into a lightless, almost airless vacuum. Partly necessitated by the artist’s cinematic medium, this blackness causes a sharp alteration of the senses. It makes us physically aware of invisibility and silence, which carry immense thematic weight in Thompson’s work.

His exhibition is comprised of three silent and visually understated films. While the scenes are staged as photographic portraits, they are captured as moving images, a technique referred to by the exhibition’s curator, Stephen Cleland, as “durational” portraiture.

The probing camera risks intrusion, yet manages intimacy.  It is unwavering and foregrounds slight involuntary movements of habit and impulse; subtle flickers of restlessness, defiance, melancholy, suspicion, serenity, sobriety and self-awareness reveal a full spectrum of emotion in the subjects, despite the simple compositions.

Mute, without context and leisurely in pace, the work invites contemplation from its audience. It is unexpected then, when reading the short descriptions provided by Thompson, to have the work’s subjects placed within the lineage and legacy of war and police brutality.

Subjects Jone Lebanon, Rosi Lebanon, Rupeni Iraq and Inia Sinai of How Long? (2018), Brandon and Graeme of Cemetery of Uniforms and Liveries (2016) and Diamond Reynolds of Autoportrait (2017) are all in some way—whether directly witnessed or inherited— affected by violence.

In this way, Thompson transforms the ways in which we might usually encounter violence and brutality in art and media. The usual carnage, chaos and symbolic blemishes of red are a distant notion, here supplanted by a haunting sense of lasting trauma that is material, personal, immediate and embodied.

Thomas Ruff is a German photographer who lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. He has been described as “a master of edited and reimagined image.

Portrait (Stoya)  1986 

Portrait 1986 (Stoya) is a large colour photograph by the German artist Thomas Ruff depicting a young man, shown from the front and gazing out towards the viewer. The man’s head and shoulders fill most of the frame, and his features are set in a neutral arrangement. Although his hair is styled and he wears a deep yellow shirt and striped set of braces, the pale background, the blank expression and the even, flat tones in the image reveal little about the personality of the sitter. Tate’s version of Portrait 1986 (Stoya) is numbered two in an edition of four.

The works in the Portraits series are each identical in size and feature a young male or female sitter presented against a white background and staring out towards the viewer with a blank expression. Each was made using a standardised technique: the sitters, who were all friends and colleagues of Ruff, were positioned before a large format camera that was mounted on a tripod and covered in a black cloth. Ruff composed each scene using the inverted image that appeared on the camera’s focusing screen, after which he inserted a film holder containing the photographic plate, closed the camera, set the shutter, re-covered the camera with the black cloth and took the photograph.

Ruff was among a generation of artists including Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky who studied under the German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie in the 1970s and 1980s. The work made by artists of this generation reflected the documentary objectivity – the use of even lighting, frontal presentation and the repetitive, serial format for exploring a subject – that characterised the Bechers’ photography, a style that was itself influenced by the 1920s German realist tradition of Neue Sachlichkeit or ‘New Objectivity’ painting and photography. Ruff stated in 1997 that ‘I have an idea of an image, but I can’t find the image because it doesn’t exist yet. So I have to make it myself’, and his Portraits, which act as both representations of individuals and standardised records of faces and bodies, could therefore be considered a reflection on the truth value of the photographic portrait (Ruff in Centre national de la photographie 1997, p.19). As Ruff explained in 1989: I don’t believe we can still make portraits in the conventional sense of ‘representing a personality’ today. At least I don’t claim to do that. Which is why I imitate portraits. Nonetheless, there is still a great deal of reality in my portraits. Forensic Architecture is a multidisciplinary research agency composed of artists, filmmakers, writers and architectural researchers who use architectural methods and repurpose new sensing technologies to investigate and expose state or corporate violence, especially when it bears upon the territory.

The group analyzes WW1 aerial photographs, inspects satellite images, deploys kites for land surveys, investigates material traces left on the ground, builds 3D models to re-create atrocities, creates interactive cartography and countercartography, collects testimonies of survivors, scrutinizes user-generated media made by citizens on the ground and uploaded on the internet, etc. Forensic Architecture uses any mean and media necessary to reconstruct evidences of violence that are inscribed onto the land and built environment. Along the pages, you get to learn a lot about the challenges that the members of Forensic Architecture encounter in their work: satellite imagery is more affordable than ever but its photographic resolution is degraded for privacy and secrecy reasons, at least when it comes to the ones available to the public (as Weizman notes, high resolution is used for killing and low resolution for investigating the killing); a commitment to helping the victims leaves the group exposed to criticisms, even though their method is rigorously scientific; legal system itself can be part of a state’s mechanism of domination and denial; evidence from sources derived from new media video analysis, interactive cartography, or animation almost always encounter objection in court because they are too new, etc.

The book is fascinating. It is dense in information, images, maps and documentation that record the way the organization is re-appropriating and re-purposing a broad number of skills and technologies in the context of activism and justice. Their method is characterized by a remarkable amount of scientific accuracy, but also by a surprisingly high percentage of flexibility, empathy and creativity.

The book is often disheartening too. State-sponsored violence makes for very uncomfortable read: tales of ruthless dispossession, of Bedouin villages bulldozed time and time again, brutal colonization of landscape, destruction of life-sustaining resources, arbitrary killings made acceptable by the cultural and legal system, erasure of culture, etc.

Forensic Architecture. Violence at the Threshold of Detectability is a publication i’d recommend to anyone interested in human rights, activism, geopolitics, urban planning, architecture, and in the creative and social-engaged uses of technologies.

Actress, Supermodel and broadcaster, Eunice Olumide has become Team Nigeria (UK) International goodwill ambassador, as announced by the grassroots organization management executives, led by UK based, Nigerian born international sports administrator and pundit, Mr. David Doherty.

Since Eunice Olumide’s debut in BAFTA nominated Middle Man, she is one talent about to take the world by storm. Appearing in Lucas Films “Rogue One” as The Rebellion Leader, other roles include “After Louise” with esteemed actor, Greg wise to name a few.

Eunice Olumide also was selected for a featured cameo in “Ab Fab” The Movie and is the ambassador for the current 2016/2017 body shop “In Our Hands” campaign. 

Olumide is known for her versatility across a variety of genres including action, drama and comedy roles, which have taken her across the globe.

Over the last few years, she has grown as a talented actress and presenter, appearing on both BBC and SKY television, with a sellout show at The Stand Comedy Club, during the Edinburgh international fringe festival.

Originally born in working class area in Edinburgh, Scotland. She has been booked all over the world including UK, U.S.A, Japan, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Germany and U.A.E.

Scouted at the age of 15, Eunice Olumide has been twice nominated by the Scottish fashion awards and vogue.com as Model of the year.

She has also appeared in both National and international campaigns, fashion weeks and editorials like Hunger, W-AD, ID Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Oyst, Paper Cut, New York Magazine, Italian Vogue, British Vogue, Bahrain Confidential and many more.

She has also graced the catwalks and modelled for top couture powerhouses including Prada, Alexander Mc-Queen, Mulberry, Christopher Kane, Henry Holland, Vivienne Westwood, Darris Tweed e.t.c.

Much of her personal time is spent on fund raising for numerous charities including Children’s Hospice Scotland, The Well Foundation and The Columbus Hospice.

She is also the ambassador for Breakthrough Breast Cancer TLC, joining the likes of Kate Moss, Edith Bowman, Twiggy, Alan Carr, Sharon and Kelly Osbourne.

In the past, Eunice Olumide has been signed with several top agencies including Ford, IMM Düsseldorf, Viva & Laagecia, Amq, The Model Team and Mega to name a few.
