back on my chinese dub with english subs anime project and noticing some fascinating differences btwn various chinese dubs for totoro.

like, i'm starting to suspect that the dubs made in hk and tw were translated from the english dub of that time rather than the original jp, bc the english subtitle file i have is translated and timed from the original jp, and there are numerous times throughout the movie where there are just. no subtitles when characters are speaking. because apparently in the original jp, no one was saying anything.

but i remember characters speaking in those moments when i watched the movie growing up, and they speak in those same moments in the hk/tw dubs too....... much to consider

#and then the dub which is like ostensibly from mainland china(?) (or at least the old version(?))#(i've been glancing through the chinese wikipedia article for totoro and gleaned that there are like. five diff cn dubs for tororo)#(one from taiwan two from hk and two from mainland china i think)#but anyway the dub titled 國配 in the mkv file seems to match the jp audio's timing #but i don't really know why a dub from tw would choose to translate from en rather than jp like.#i don't remember if my mom said it was mandatory or not but she DID learn jp in school growing up #a few years ago i actually found a box full of letters from her pen pal In Japan that were In Japanese so she could at least read decently #(i've been meaning to try to find that box of letters again. been curious abt it) but anyway she also mentioned that she Sucked at jp lol #So I Would Imagine. that people dubbing anime in the 90s would have preferred t/l from jp > en #unless i'm wrong and the dub labelled 台配 is not referring to a dub made in taiwan. in which case i rlly don't know what's going on here #the worm speaks
