Elsa (Frozen)

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale ‘The Snow Queen,’ Disney’s animated musical feature, Frozen, tells the tale of two sisters who are the daughters of a king and queen.  Elsa, the elder of the two daughters, cultivates strange powers in her youth, the ability to manifest ice and snow with her mind.  After accidentally injuring her younger sister, Anna, with these powers, Elsa is banished from the castle and forced to live on her own.  

Years later, the king and queen die and Princess Ana is made queen.  A duplicitous suitor named Prince Hans woos Anna with his aim of annexing the kingdom into his own. Hans schemes to do away with Anna yet Elsa ultimately saves her.  The two sisters reconcile and Elsa comes to realize that love is the key to gaining greater mastery over her powers.  With this new mastery, Elsa is able to depose Prince Hans and ensure that her sister’s kingdom remains safe and secure. 

Actress Idina Menzel provides the voice for Elsa.  Frozen premiered in November of 2013.

Snow White

An orphaned princess, Snow White was forced to live with her cold-hearted stepmother, the Queen.  Enraged that Snow White's beauty had surpassed her own, The Queen had her Huntsman take the young princess into the woods to kill her.  Unable to follow through with the ghoulish task, the Huntsman released Snow White, telling her of the Queen’s plan and imploring her to run off and hide.  

Snow White came to find herself in the care of seven woodland dwarves and, for a time, she lived happily among them safely secluded in the forest.  Yet the Queen ultimately discovered that Snow White was still alive.  Using her magic, the Queen crept into the woods in the guise of an old hag and tricked Snow White into biting a poison apple. The poison rendered the princess into a deep, death-like sleep.  Outraged by the Queen’s actions, the animals of the forest chase her up a mountain where she falls to her death.    

Snow White’s body was placed in a glass casket and the Dwarves and woodland creatures stood vigil around her. A kindhearted prince happened upon the casket and was heartbroken over the princess’ apparent death.  A gentle kiss goodbye from the prince has the effect of reviving Snow White and all are overjoyed that the fair princess had returned.  

Actress Adriana Caselotti voiced the princess in the 1937 Disney animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
