SPOILERS HEAVY FOR THOSE WHO AREN’T CAUGHT UP

Okay so here’s my thing.  Every time a female character gets killed off, there are the inevitable posts about how another female character dies for no reason.  Freydis was killed for no reason? She didn’t betray Ivar? She didn’t manipulate him? She didn’t let his enemies in? He’s not been known to do things like this? This isn’t how things like betrayal were culturally handled? He killed his own brother for less. I’m sorry but she didn’t die for no reason. She died because she betrayed him, and if you opened your eyes for two seconds, you’d see, that he struggled with it.  She didn’t die for no reason. Her gender does not mean that she shouldn’t die.

There have been many meaningless female deaths on this show, yes.  Margrethe probably didn’t need to die.  I found her useless but it wasn’t necessary to kill her.  Judith, she deserved more than she got,  but you know what? There’s been plenty of male deaths this season alone, that didn’t need to happen, last season too. I mean, Aethelwulf, Aethelred, Heahmund, Magnus, those are just a few, but people only want to complain about the women.  With the exception of Yidu, every other female death has sucked, along with Athelstan and all the children.  Ragnar’s hurt, but I wrestle with, was it time or not?  I will forever be upset about Siggy Jr. She had potential and even more, this season. 

Why aren’t we upset about ALL THE MEANINGLESS DEATHS?  Why does it always have to only be the female deaths were outraged about? Hirst has literally killed all but one of the Christians, is that not a problem? This fandom needs to learn to think more about everyone, instead of deciding only one person didn’t deserve to die, or one gender. 

Perhaps, this fandom would be more unified if everyone cared about everyone and not just one group.

Snaefrid stared out at the grassy lands of the hills she had found herself on. She was gently rolling a dagger between her palms. It was a short dagger, more like a knife than a dagger. It had a simple pummel, wrapped in leather. It had formally been her father's dagger, having found itself in Snaefrids possession now after the events that occurred a few days before. The memories were sharp and blurred in her mind. The battle against Ivar had taken Snaefrids father from her and made her the queen of her people in one swift blow. It had left herself along with her new husband Bjorn and their allies few and on the run for their lives. While Ivar proclaimed himself king of Kattegat with Harald at his side.

Snaefrid had escaped with her life, and a few of her warriors had survived, but many more of the Sami laid lifeless on the forest floor. When fleeing the battle they barely had time to gather anything before running from Kattegat with their warriors and what people would come with them, and now they had to decide what to do.

Ivar and Harald were sure to hunt Bjorn and Ubbe to the ends of the world, and anyone who was willing to help them would quickly be dealt with. They had very few options.

Snaefrid swallowed and stabbed the dagger into the ground, and then did so again and again. In truth, a part of her wanted to go home, secure her people before Ivar could do something. But she knew that was not her fate. She wanted to avenge her people, her father. She needed to.

Sooo... what was the point of Snaefrid?

I’ve been thinking about this question, so I am sorry I didn’t answer earlier, but I was stumped coming up with a good answer lol. 

I’m guessing she served a few purposes. Several birds with one stone. They wanted to make Lagertha look strong at first so they brought in the sami as an ally, and they needed an introduction somehow, like who are these dudes? Oh, marry one! Here’s a custom! Chewing balls! And then her death gave Bjorn an emotional moment in the finale, I mean, plain and simple, that’s how they used her. Plus, bonus kinky sex scene. 

Ivar lost a mom. Well now Bjorn has lost a stepson and a wife. Even the score I guess. Though he did kind of lose a daughter while she was left in Aslaug’s care, which is never mentioned but Bjorn could easily throw in Ivar’s face if he wanted to, (like both Bjorn and Lagertha could be like, revenge for Little Siggy played a part in Aslaug’s death but it’s not a thing at all) but some things we forget on Vikings and others you’re smacked over the head with every episode. 

And I’m just thinking objectively here. I haven’t been able to pick a side since last season when it was Vikings vs. Aella. It was like watching the Marvel Civil War for me, I wasn’t firmly for one team over the other. I got both sides. Like, Bucky is my dude, but I understood Tony. And on Vikings, Ivar is my dude, but … I get why he shouldn’t quite be ruling a kingdom yet. 

WOW That was a tangent. Sorry, you just asked a simple question about Snaefrid ;-) 

But yeah, I also think they wanted to get Torvi away from Bjorn somehow so she’d end up with Ubbe. Sounds like Ubbe won’t be king of Kattegat, but he might be king of somewhere, and he’ll need a queen. A queen that is not Margrethe, apparently. 

It seems like every half-season a lot of us are like OHHH WHO IS THE NEW GIRL COULD BE COOL and then it’s like NEVERMIND. Last season for me was Tanaruz. I thought she could have had such a cool story, ALAS NEVERMIND. Snaefrid could have been the same. I mean, she had mad skillz and I loved her war paint technique. 

Ah well.

🛡 dialogue ?

I can’t believe I had the nerve not to answer. Okay! So:

In my humble opinion, the dialogues in Vikings - that is the seasons I’ve seen, aka season 1 to 4b - were very poetic and they had a literary quote-ish vibe that I greatly enjoyed. The mysticism, the banter, the confessions, the comparisons were of beauty and most lines sounded to me as elegant as literature - which is a great thing considering the literary sources behind the legend of Ragnar Lothbrok.

Though, being a great fan of dialogues I lamented the fact that there wasn’t enough for my taste, but since I am also a fan of battle sequences, let’s say my thirst was quenched. I think that the actors deliver their lines outstandingly and though women are - in my opinion - not given much lines (*cough cough* Yidu, Magrethe, Snaefrid) I can but admire the lines Hirst chose to have Lagertha say. Most of them are truly good and I especially love it when Aslaug talks about the sense of the self and identity. It was very philosophical and imo the dialogues matched the characters and what they tried to be very well.

None of the dialogues made me cringe EXCEPT!!!!! when they used Lothbrok as a family name instead of an EPITHET BECAUSE IT WAS AN EPITHET AND IT HAS NO REASON OF BEING IF THORA IS NOT PRESENT IN THE STORY FFS!!!!! Also I don’t think that Hirst knows truly what a Viking is and that’s.... saddening since it’s the fucking TV title.

Last point: Some of the cut scenes shouldn’t have been cut because the dialogues gave more insight into the characters and their actions and that was... sad.

Okay, so I’m not going anywhere. I don’t really see the need to. I’ve been through many changes on this site and we’ll get through this one, too. But, I know some are scrambling for other options and I am a huge Discord roleplayer.
