I hopped off the plane on LAX with my appetite and my chambray short-suit. The weather this time in the City of Angels was, to my surprise, bearable (knowing it’s the end of August and I’m a seasoned complainer about the heat). After a two hour something flight from Bellingham (thanks Allegiant!), we cruised through the also surprisingly smooth LA traffic to DTLA.
Our crib for the week was shiny and new, ultra-chic, with multi-million dollar view of Downtown Los Angeles. LEVEL furnished living is not only strategically located in the heart of DTLA, it’s equipped with amazing amenities (pool, outdoor theatre, spacious gym with its own room for Peloton - yes, I worked out during this trip), and did I mention the view from our 29th-floor suite was spectacular?! What made this stay particularly memorable tho,was the level of hospitality we received from their all-star team: impeccable with personalities bubblier than a chilled grapefruit LaCroix!
My memory of DTLA only goes as far as a mid-May pool party on top of the ACE hotel. But this time, I really got to explore the hood - and it was lovely. Of course there are those quintessential Los Angeles institutions (HA!): celebrity Whole Foods, Sweetgreens, and Bottega Louie but I obvs. skipped the healthy-ish stuff and went straight to the important ones. Cocktail bars - surprise!
On our first night, however, I was in the mood for wine. Natural wine. Upon a little research, we stumbled upon Garçons de Café, a rustic-chic French wine bar with sizeable library of vino that includes several bottles of skin-contact and natural wines. A glass of Le p’tit Barriot Syrah was poured to start the evening: full-ish body, bursts of floral and stone-fruit with just the right amount of tannin and spices too. It would’ve been a perfect serenade-me-to-bed kind of wine but nonetheless it was delicious even to start the evening.
Before I ran out of battery, we made it to the Nomad Los Angeles and caught a second wind. The DTLA chapter offers the classic Nomad feels: luscious, velvety, old-school bank-turned-to-hotel with a touch of California sunshine. Colours, textures and prints fill the lobby bar. Photogenic and poetic. Serving up the classics from the NYC counterpart, original, some large format (cocktails for 2), and even larger format (for 3-4,‘depending on your tolerance’ they said) libations, it’s one of those places to see and be seen, to drink and to be (day) drunk. Bonus point for the attractive staffs HA!
I had to come back to the ACE just to relive my youth one more time. Surrounding myself with hype kids, who, most likely would have released more than one EPs in their early 20s, it was adorable. It terms of the menu, It was more a tequila soda with a side of overpriced cold-pressed juice for me.
Conveniently located behind our apartment, is the Broken Shaker. A rooftop pool bar with bumpin’ music and killer tiki cocktails. Fun, colourful, rum and tequila-focused menu with late-night bar bites, it’s a perfect place for a nightcap, especially when you live literally steps away!
DTLA’s sunshine, full-blast air conditioning and fluffy pillows somehow made my hangover less dreadful and more manageable. I had two options: go downstairs and check out the smoothie bar, or go downstairs, turn the corner and get shake shack. I feel like this was an obvious choice when one is in LA, but you never know, cause a lady never shack and tell 😏.
We spent the afternoon exploring the jewelry district as we made our way to the Grand Central Market. A food-enthusiast Mecca with tons of vendors that are uniquely DTLA: from eggslut to oyster bar, Filipino-inspired rice bowls to cold-pressed juice and tacos (obvs), everything is available in one, huge-ass foodhall.
Right across the street from GCM, is the staircase that leads you to the other side of DTLA. The financial district (I assume), the Broad and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This hike (yes, I considered this steps a hike) took my breath away, literally. My out-of-breath self rejoiced when I saw the Kogi truck waiting for us at the top - worth every step. Naturally, we made a pit-stop for the infamous short rib tacos, which, hit the spot.
*intermission* We went to the Broad, saw some Basquiat and Murakami, took photos of some Koons, almost saw Kusama yada yada yada skipped the Runyon and took nap...*
Fast forward to dinner time!
Honestly one of the things that I am most excited about during this trip was our dinner at Petit Trois. The middle sister restaurant from the award-winning, celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre (who’s also behind Trois Mec and Ludo Bird). Offering classic French cuisine meets Los Angeles strip-malls. Juxtaposition at its finest and most delicious form.
The 35-seater restaurant is bustling with people coming in and out, basting in the aroma of butter and fresh-baked bagutte. J’ador - Je’ very hungry!
Both the cocktail and wine list are well-curated to accompany the Parisian bistro-style food menu. No fuzz no muss. Tartare de boeuf, escargot that’s bathed in butter and garlic (extra baguette), steak frites, perfectly fluffy, shiny and spotless French omelette of my dream, and I cannot stress how bummed I was that we didn’t order the burger. Tres bien, parfait!
This evening turned into a whirlwind of tequila sodas and bar hopping along WeHo that I honestly can’t really recall the deets 😏 but it was the perfect Friday night, thanks to my lovely companion ❤️
I started the last day in LA with a pleasant surprise. My hangover was a no show - honestly, at this age, this is a big win. I hopped on a uber to the art district for a cute coffee meeting with an old friend Blake and his lovely wife Ashley at the newly opened Verve coffee. The property is HUGE, it might as well be a mall. They also take my morning coffee experience to the next level with their “cocktail” menu: no booze just buzz. It was very fascinating and exciting - exactly what we need back here in Vancouver.
We spent the last couple hours wandering around Abbott Kinney and Venice beach. My goodness the people here are too pretty for their own sake. Jeremy even insisted to go to muscle beach for a little pull-up session. I was just there, sipping my CBD-infused lemonade, sticking out like the sore thumb - it was hysterical.
A hop, skip and an hour nap later, I came back to Nomad for one last cocktail. Still hoping for a meet-cute with a good looking, well-dressed, fresh out of Hollywood star to happen. It did not happen.
I took my hungry self to KazuNori, the original handroll sushi bar, just couple blocks away from the Nomad. The yellowtail and the scallop were particularly stellar that night - and the sea bass sashimi was also a big winner. I don’t know if it’s an LA thing or whatever, but the couple next to me shared six pieces of handrolls. I successfully stuffed 12 rolls to myself. Oh well - it was f*ckin delicious.
With three hours of sleep, I gathered myself and started packing. We watched the sunrise on the way to LAX, half alive but fully grateful.
I absolutely can’t wait to go back to LA. I mean, I didn’t get a chance to eat KBBQ this time... so Elay, I’ll be back!
Thanks again to Allegiant! for the fabulous flight and LEVEL furnished living for the hospitality!

Back@It, Again
31 March 2019
Had a pretty good day. Woke up and did the Writing Challenge. I changed the length of time between the writing sessions from 4 minutes to 3 minutes and the number of writing sessions from 4 to 3 as well; but, I think that I’m going to switch the length of time back to 4 minutes because I found that I wasn’t able to write fast enough at the 3 minute time length. After I wrote, I ate my last Morning Glory muffins for a while maybe even forever and had some tea. I then played around on my guitar for a while.
I washed dishes and practiced my piano lessons as well as played a few of my songs on the piano. I took an Epsom salt/baking soda detox bath then showered and washed my hair. I started listening to a new audio book and played some games. Then I warmed my dinner and watched The Closer, God Friended Me, NCIS, Los Angeles and the last hour of American Idol. Right before God Friended Me, the electric went out in my building and on my block for around 15/20 minutes or so. But it was okay; I just stayed on my couch most of the time instead of trying to fumble around in the dark for a flashlight. Once the electric came back on, I went out to my truck and grabbed some water from the back; came back in and finished watching God Friended Me.
Tomorrow, I start my raw food lifestyle and I started pulling down some raw food recipes from the Internet today….salads, juices, smoothies, etc. the first few days, I think will be mostly smoothies and overnight oats until I get a juicer and a food dehydrator. I plan to go food shopping tomorrow to stock up on veggies and fruit for the week. I think that I’m going to try to shop weekly so that I will always have fresh vegetables and fruit that way, the food will not spoil.
Well, I think that’s all for now! Going to brush my teeth and go to bed.

New Post has been published on https://localfreshies.com/somethings-exciting-happening-on-the-june-lake-loop/
Something Exciting is Happening on The June Lake Loop
Over the past twenty years, not too many things have changed in June Lake. Main stays like Ernie’s & the Tiger Bar have been around since the 30’s. So, it came as a shock when we made the journey down to shred June Mountain this season that something big is happening. An energy that wasn’t there when we visited almost five years ago was alive & electric. Walking down main street, a plethora of new places to eat, drink, and hang out have opened. It’s a new era on the June Lake Loop that you need to experience.
The “Spark” – Alterra Re-opens June Mountain
What has caused this spark for new businesses to open? To answer this question, you must look at the tourism behind it. Mountain towns are at their soul’s cyclical. People descend upon cozy hamlets in a short, albeit enjoyable season. For most, this peak period is winter, but for June Lake Loop, it’s actually summer. The goal for most is to catch the “big fish” on one of the many alpine lakes surrounding it. When Alterra decided to re-open June Mountain, it didn’t just mean more ski terrain, but rather kicked off the spark that helped usher a new era for the June Lake Loop.
June Lake Brewing
And what was the first new business to open in June Lake after the resort re-opened? A brewery of course! June Lake Brewing is located a block off the main drag & is a destination in and of itself. June Lake’s quality of water is the stuff of legends. Since beer is 90-95% water, combine that with a mad scientist of creating ales & you better expect some of the tastiest beers you’ve EVER had. And to top things off, served alongside the great selection of award-winning ales is the Ohanas 395 food truck. You can order up a delicious “Hawaiian soul food” dish & they’ll drop it off right in the tasting room.
The Lift June Lake
Be sure to try the nightly special… like these stuffed poblano peppers – Photo by: Local Freshies®
As you pull into town, one of the first structures you come up to is “The Lift.” It’s pretty obvious since outside of it is an old school chair-lift hanging in the sky. The interior is what you could call mountain modern. Concrete finished floors, a wine bar made out of 200-year-old Monterey cypress and bright lighting makes it feel hip but at the same time comfortable. A place you could see yourself studying or just hanging out for a glass of wine. While most cafés talk a big game about making high quality, fresh food and awesome customer service, the Lift actually does it.
No matter if you show up for breakfast, lunch, OR dinner, the artistic variations of cuisine are something you’d expect in Los Angeles or New York not June Lake. For example, their popular California croque monsieur sandwich is like a Reuben meets a French dip. The bread is the key! It’s crunchy on the outside yet soft on the inside. AMAZING! And no matter what… if there’s a special, TRY IT! You won’t be disappointed.
Gordo’s Mexican
After a big day on the mountain or fishing on a pristine alpine lake on the Loop, you can build up quite a big appetite. Gordo’s Mexican restaurant will make sure you walk out happy & full. For starters, you get complimentary homemade chips and salsa. Instead of the typical watery variety, their salsa is as thick as a pasta sauce & perfect for dipping their fresh homemade tortilla chips. Nearly everything on the menu is delicious, well-crafted, and big. In fact, the portions are so large that you could split them between two people.
T-Bar Social Club
You wouldn’t guess in a town of only 600 residents there would be a good music venue. Well, in June Lake you’d be wrong! This hidden gem is just one stage of a multi-year project to bring back the Sierra Inn to its former glory. They are making sure to respect the feel of the region but at the same time improving upon it with such things as bringing in a world-class sound system. The T-Bar Social Club is a perfect place to rock out to live music, see live comedy, hear inspirational speakers, and so much more.
And That’s Not All
If you take a moment and walk down Main Street, you’ll see many other businesses that have decided to open up shop. While we ended up riding until last chair every day, we heard great things about Hermitage Juice Bar. This quaint café dishes out clean & healthy food, well-crafted coffee drinks, and of course cold-press smoothies that will make your body run at peak performance.
And it’s not just food and brews that are opening either. If you’re looking for a cool souvenir, be sure to check out Gallery 158. Named after the Loop’s designated highway number, you might find the perfect souvenir to bring home. And for those that enjoy an alternative way to relax, consider swinging by High Sierra Cannabis. They’ve collaborated with a flower (the term of art for “bud”) producer to create three unique-to-June strands: June Bloom, Bodie Ghost and Gnome Zone. And last but not least, a new tech startup by the name of Insane Audio is in town which builds premium off-roading sound systems.
Old Stomping Grounds Are Still Here Too!
Does that mean all the ole’ stomping grounds are gone? Nope! Ernie’s is still here making sure that your fishing or ski gear is ready for the day. The Tiger Bar & Café still holds the second OLDEST liquor license in California serving up mean drinks to the wee hours of the morning or a Patty Melt made out of fresh never frozen beef.
You may come to June Lake for the impressive scenery, easy access to backcountry skiing, and crystal-clear waters, but now you’ll want to stay for all the fun you can have AFTER the sun goes down.

Food Trucks: The Real Movable Feasts
From the basic chuck wagon fare of stews, beans and biscuits, we’ve got come an extended way and assume far greater than the antique cellophane wrapped sandwich of the 50s and 60s, in conjunction with stale espresso. Ethnic cuisines and made to order warm meals at the moment are not unusual for harried on-the-run office people, and we’re wiling to pay pinnacle greenback for the benefit.
In the 50s, cell canteens serviced u.S. Military troops on bases and maneuvers, but they have been little more than regulation chow. Individuals have come to expect a long way greater and innovative vendors gladly solution the call. From early ice cream vehicles to the recent dog vendors with their vienna red meat umbrellas, hundreds tumble out of offices, factories and stores, headed to that truck down the road where they realize what they may locate and don’t mind status in line for it. Who wishes stale merchandising device ingredients or speedy food burgers when we can get fresh falafel packed into pita bread, a plate of nachos or an real fish and chips wrapped in newsprint. What has developed from the “roach educate” of the past to a venue that launched the career of many government chefs, meals trucks now even cater at unique activities, college campuses, conferences and weddings.
Let’s see the most popular and state-of-the-art offerings from those meals-on-wheels throughout the united states of america. Most of these truck operators also have eating places multiple places, and many are culinary college graduate and cooks:
The grilled cheeserie – from simple to designer grilled cheese sandwiches, nashville
The taco truck – a diffusion of tacos and toppings, as well as burritos, hoboken, nj
Fukuburger truck – the actual final call of its eastern proprietor, burgers feature unusual asian toppings and sauces, las vegas
Mac mart truck – takes mac and cheese to a new stage with innovative substances, philadelphia
Luke’s lobster – lobster, crab and shrimp rolls for approximately $17 (clearly no longer for the ones on a price range) big apple metropolis
The cow and curd – cheese curds, batter dipped and deep fried, with dipping sauces, philadelphia
Kogi bbq – creative and various korean cuisine, los angeles
Ms. Cheezious – greater designer grilled cheese sandwiches, one in every of the usa’s favourite consolation foods, miami
Cinnamon snail – vegan meals for the extra health-aware and non meat-ingesting crowd, with no longer a snail in sight (cross parent) nyc
Oink and moo bbq – award-winning beef and red meat bbq with all the trimmings, nj
In case you venture into ethnic neighborhoods, including a large metropolis chinatown, glaringly you will find a preponderance of their local cuisines dotting the streets, however universal those are the maximum commonplace menu items throughout the us of a:
Barbecue Hamburgers Warm dogs Espresso and espresso drinks Smoothies / wholesome drinks and juices “grown-up” grilled cheese sandwiches Sliders Cupcakes and desserts Avenue tacos and burritos Sushi Lobster rolls Mediterranean menus / gyros Crepes with special toppings Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches Pizza Ice cream and smooth serve Shaved ice / italian ice Indian meals Hawaiian food Chicken wings
Within the us, food vans are a $1.2 billion enterprise. No matter the apparent demanding situations which include lack of warm going for walks water, strict rules, licenses and fitness laws, meals vehicles serve an essential function in our society and offer a crucial carrier to lots of people anywhere. Even though chuck wagons might also simply be nostalgia, the concept lives on. Meals trucks. Whilst you just can not wait to eat.

The Best L.A. Coffee Shops to Do Work In
FROM LOS ANGELES MAGAZINE: this is what we’ve all been searching for: A guide to the greatest L.A. coffee shops in which to do work.
This list is by no means comprehensive, but it is the best one of its kind. Each coffee shop on it was subjected to a criteria included type and quality of coffee served, amount of seating, number of power outlets, parking, aesthetic ambiance, wifi availability, and food offerings, if applicable. You’ll notice that some of the places on this list offer internet access while others do not; some have snacks, others full-on meals. Some places didn’t make it because their wifi gets spotty if too many people are using it. Others were cut because of their dumb “no laptops” rules. Others still, while purveyors of the finest caffeinated beverages, were left off the list due to lack of seating, or maybe music that makes it hard to concentrate. What it really came down to was this: Can you spend anywhere from three to eight hours in one of these shops and get some stuff done without wanting murder yourself or someone in your general vicinity, as is often the case at Starbucks/Peete’s/the Coffee Bean? We can confidently say yes.
( and by the way: This is in no way a ranking).
Dinosaur Coffee 4334 W. Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake
Coffee served: Four Barrel (San Francisco) WiFi: No Seating: Some nice communal tables, some nice outdoor seating, some nice two-person tables. Nice, on the whole. Power outlet situation: Satisfactory. Parking situation: It’s Silver Lake. Prepare accordingly. (But srsly, there are meters along Sunset and Fountain). Aesthetic ambiance: Light, bright, airy—lots of blonde wood and windows. Food offerings: Pastries, with a Maury’s Los Angeles pop-up on Saturdays. Other: Vanity points for the highly Instagrammable neon sign, unless someone unplugs it to use the outlet for their own computer at the cost of public joy and happiness.
Found Coffee 1355 Colorado Blvd., Eagle Rock
Coffee served: Demitasse Coffee Roasters (Koreatown) and Peri Coffee (Altadena) are the standards, but there’s a slew of rotating roasters on tap, too. WiFi: Yes Seating: Communal tables, bar seating, two-person tables. Power outlet situation: Not many. You may have to fight someone. Parking situation: Lot and street. Aesthetic ambiance: White walls, exposed ducts, floor to ceiling windows. Food offerings: They’ve got a selection of pastries from Sherman Oaks’ Crème Caramel LA on the reg, but they also host pop-ups from delicious local vendors like AvocaToast. Other: Sometimes the Ridges Churro Bar truck parks out front on Sundays, which is pretty dreamy. Follow them on Instagram for updates.
Stamp Proper Foods 4500 Los Feliz Blvd., Los Feliz
Coffee served: Equator Coffee (San Rafael); Stumptown (L.A.) WiFi: Yes Seating: Communal tables and normal tables. There are a handful of tables outside, too. Power outlet situation: Two, but it’s rarely uber-busy with workers, even on weekends. If you need a plug, you should be able to snag one at some point. Parking situation: There are two spots in the lot dedicated to Stamp, but most of them are reserved for Messhall (next door). Try your luck at meters along Hillhurst or in free spots on the side streets. Aesthetic ambiance: There are plenty of windows for natural light, so super pleasant on the whole. Food offerings: Everything from house-made smoothies to buckwheat pancakes to zucchini pasta. Take over a plug and you could be at this place all day if need be.
Copa Vida 70 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena
Coffee served: Copa Vida (Pasadena) WiFi: Yes. Unless you go during a crucial work window on Saturday or Sunday (between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.), in which case no. Seating: Ample across two different rooms. Power outlet situation: You shouldn’t have a problem finding one. Parking situation: There’s a structure just north of the shop on Green St. Aesthetic ambiance: The place is spacious with lots of windows but can feel cramped and loud when filled with gabbing Caltech students. Bring headphones. Food offerings: Full service breakfast and lunch, plus brunch on weekends (a limited menu is available after 3 p.m.)
Bru Coffeebar 1866 N. Vermont Ave., Los Feliz
Coffee served: Ritual Coffee Roaster (San Francisco) WiFi: Yes Seating: There’s a lot of it, but on weekends, you might have a hard time staking your claim. Power outlet situation: There are maybe two, so bring a fully charged computer. Parking situation: Find a spot on surrounding residential streets—Vermont’s a toughie. Aesthetic ambiance: Wooden and white and mod—the lighting is a touch harsh, if I’m being nitpicky. Food offerings: Sub-par, but if you get hungry, venture out onto Vermont—I’d recommend grabbing a breakfast burrito from Tacos Tu Madre. Other: If you forget headphones you’ll be subject to some pretty experimental jams (but in an interesting more than obnoxious way). And the baristas behind the bar will tell you all about it if you hear something you like.
Go Get ‘Em Tiger (Los Feliz) 4630 Hollywood Blvd., Los Feliz
Coffee served: Go Get ‘Em Tiger (L.A.); Heart Coffee (Portland); Camber Coffee (Bellingham, WA); Methodical Coffee (Greenville, SC); Saint Frank (San Francisco); 49th Parallel (Vancouver, BC) WiFi: No Seating: There are a bunch of tables and chairs on an outdoor patio, but nothing indoors, so dress accordingly. Power outlet situation: N/A (see: seating). Parking situation: Street parking along Hollywood Blvd. and surrounding residential streets. Aesthetic ambiance: Lovely bleached wood inside; wooden bench and wire chair seating outside. Food offerings: A full service brunch that has some pretty impressive offerings for a walk-up coffee bar operation. Other: You’ll be sharing the patio seating with patrons of the McConnell’s ice cream next door, which may be a con in terms of securing a long-term spot. In the pro column, though, you’ll get to smell waffle cones all day, so. Also, if you get super hungry later on, you can walk down the street to Kismet for a plate of their Jeweled Crispy Rice (which we named L.A.’s best dish of 2017).
Eightfold Coffee 1294 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park
Coffee served: Heart Coffee (Portland) WiFi: Yes Seating: Marble tables with communal wooden benches. Power outlet situation: Sufficient. Parking situation: Free on the street. Aesthetic ambiance: All white errthang (brick, tile, marble). Minimalist vibes, maximum vibe, you know? Food offerings: Barely any, but you will find a wayward cookie or almond croissant in their tiny pastry case. Other: Procrastinate on your own work by reading the work of other people: They’ve curated a neat selection of books and zines, all of which are displayed on two tall wood bookshelves. Also, the music is loud AF, but it’s good, so it feels less offensive. Not great if you’re trying to have a conversation, though. Double also, there’s only one bathroom, but the place isn’t super crowded so it’s not usually an issue.
Intelligentsia (Venice) 1331 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice
Coffee served: Intelligentsia (Chicago) WiFi: Yes Seating: Counter seating around the coffee bar, booths in the corners. There are some cool wooden risers/tables on the way in, too. Power outlet situation: Atrosh. There are none. Parking situation: Parking on Abbot Kinney is always a doozie; best to stick to the residential streets, which usually have a slew of open spaces on weekdays and enough to get by on weekends. Aesthetic ambiance: Light, bright, airy, and lofty—there’s some pretty cool metalwork for you to stare at when you inevitably zone out from your work. Food offerings: Wacky croissants (Churro Croissant, Elderberry Croissant, etc.), tea cakes, cookies, and other pastries. Other: Like Eightfold, there’s only one bathroom. Unlike Eightfold, I think we can all agree that it’s annoying in a shop with as much foot traffic as this one.
Caffe Luxxe (Malibu) 22333 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 160, Malibu
Coffee served: Caffe Luxxe (L.A.) WiFi: No Seating: Indoor/outdoor, but the real standouts here are the precious sunshine-yellow tables on the back patio. Power outlet situation: No bueno. Parking situation: Free in a lot in front of the shop. Aesthetic ambiance: Lots of white and gray, two walls of windows. Serenity. Food offerings: Fresh-baked pastries; sandwiches; pre-packaged treats. Other: If Malibu is a hike for you, consider the Brentwood location instead. I’m loathe to recommend it because it’s my own neighborhood spot, but the new-and-improved outpost is too great to keep to myself. Half of its awesomeness comes from the excellent managerial staff and army of pleasant baristi. They are the best, and you can tell them I said so.
Deus Ex Machina 1001 Venice Blvd., Venice
Coffee served: Blue Bottle (Oakland) WiFi: Yes Seating: Indoor/outdoor community tables and high-top seating, plus one super dope couch made by local furniture designer Stephen Kenn. Power outlet situation: A solitary plug under a bench near the kitchen. Which is to say, not ideal. Parking situation: The lot in the back is often occupied by motorcycles (the coffee shop is connected to a motorcycle, surf, and clothing shop—the brand’s flagship location), but there are a good number of spaces for cars. If all else fails, find a spot on Lincoln or a side street. Aesthetic ambiance: Cool without making you feel like you’re not cool. Food offerings: Juices, salads, sandwiches, pastries, and lots of pre-packaged goodies. Other: It’s almost guaranteed you’ll see many dogs because of the cafe’s breezy digs, which all but negates the whole one-outlet thing.
Verve (3rd Street) 8051 W. 3rd St., Beverly Grove
Coffee served: Verve (Santa Cruz) WiFi: Yes Seating: A melange of two-person tables, a community table, and some bartop seating, plus a few smaller wooden tables and chairs out front and out back. Power outlet situation: Abominable, as there is only one. That’s still better than the Verve on Melrose, which has zero. (FWIW, though, that’s a nice Verve outpost as well.) Parking situation: A tiny lot out front (stay as long as you want); two hour parking in a communal lot in the back; meters; free parking on residential streets. Even so, it’s still kind of hard to find a spot. Aesthetic ambiance: Concrete floors, light wood tables, lots of natural light. Food offerings: Heavier snacks (avocado toast, chia pudding); pastries and treats. Other: It’s in the same little complex as Bel Campo Meat Co. and Sweetgreen, not to mention just up the street from Sweetfin Poke. If you get mega-hungry, you’re set. Also, the DTLA location deserves an honorable mention here, with its blonde wood tables and outdoor seating nestled among two plant walls. A little sceney, but if that’s you’re scene, then cool.
Bricks and Scones 403 N. Larchmont Blvd., Larchmont Village
Coffee served: LAMILL Coffee (Alhambra) WiFi: Yes
Seating: Inside, there’s a lot of it, from chairs to chez lounges to couches to a communal table. Outside on the patio is your standard smattering of tables and chairs. Power outlet situation: No qualms here. Parking situation: May the odds be ever in your favor of finding a meter on Larchmont Blvd. or a spot in the tiny lot out back. Try your luck on Rosewood, half a block away, for free two hour street parking. Aesthetic ambiance: This definitely isn’t your run-of-the-mill craft coffee house. The building itself is architecturally intriguing with an interior to match, but dark brick walls and its purple-and-yellow color scheme make the inside a touch too moody to be pleasant, IMHO. The patio, on the other hand, is sunny in all senses of the word. Food offerings: Full service breakfast, salads, and sandwiches, plus a bevy of pastries baked on-site, including—duh—warm scones of the matcha, lavender white chocolate, blueberry, etc, etc. variety.
Coffee Commissary 3121 W. Olive Ave., Burbank
Coffee served: Chromatic Coffee Co. (San Jose); Temple Coffee Roasters (Sacramento); Madcap Coffee (Grand Rapids, MI); Coava Coffee Roasters (San Diego); Victrola Coffee Roasters (Seattle, WA) WiFi: Yes Seating: Indoor/outdoor tables and counters. Power outlet situation: V good. Parking situation: Street, but be sure to read the signs—residents get I’m-going-to-leave-a-strongly-worded-note-on-your-windshield levels of hyphy if you park errantly on their block. Aesthetic ambiance: The space is bright and non-claustrophobic thanks to ample windows and an open-ish floor plan. Food offerings: Daaaang, their menu is stacked. Breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch, from brisket burritos to pork belly brown rice bowls. Other: Commissary’s other outposts (WeHo, Hollywood, and Culver) are worth a mention, too, but the Burbank spot feels like the crown jewel.

Maya Moore, WNBA Stars Starting To Invest In Food Industry
NEW YORK (AP) — Whether it’s to plan for their future once basketball is done, promote healthy living or just to have some fun, WNBA players such as Sue Bird and Maya Moore are getting involved in the food industry.
The key is to do it with people they trust.
Bird has invested in restaurants in the Northeast for over a decade, getting started when UConn coach Geno Auriemma presented the opportunity for his former players to buy into his place at the Mohegan Sun.
“Coach Auriemma’s restaurant is a well-oiled machine,” Bird said. “He has great people working for him and it seemed like a natural fit.”
His Mohegan Sun restaurant has photos of UConn players all over the place, with sandwiches and meals named after those former Huskies greats.
From there, Bird branched out when a family friend, Dylan Welsh, was looking for co-investors for a few restaurants in the Boston area — Welsh’s Five Horse Taverns.
“My dad and I got involved as we totally trusted Dylan,” Bird said. “If we didn’t know him as well as we did having lived across the street from him for so many years, we probably wouldn’t have gotten involved.”
The Seattle Storm guard tries to stop by the restaurants when she’s in town, although she admits for now she’s mostly a silent investor.
“When I get older and I’m done playing, who knows?” Bird said of getting more involved when she retires. “For right now, it’s a nice check, definitely.”
Alana Beard and Marissa Coleman are taking a more hands-on approach than Bird. The pair bought into their first food franchise last year, a Mellow Mushroom pizza restaurant in Virginia. Ever since Coleman was a rookie with the Washington Mystics, the duo spoke about life after basketball. Coleman had a teammate at Maryland whose father owned several Domino’s franchises in the area. So when Beard and Coleman were ready, he brought them in to the Mellow Mushroom franchise.
“We are all part-owners and are using this as an apprenticeship to learn every aspect of the company to open our own in the next three years,” Beard said. “He’s been such a valuable resource for us helping us through this process.”
Beard spent a lot of time, after helping Los Angeles win the WNBA championship this past fall, learning the ins and outs of the business, even learning how to make the pizzas.
Having a mentor has really helped.
“I don’t like to make mistakes, but when this opportunity came, I jumped on it because it was the perfect situation,” Beard said. “Mr. Waller has 30 years of business experience and is someone who has gone through it. It takes the risk factor down tremendously and we can learn at our own pace and feel comfortable to open up our own.
Beard got a firsthand look at franchising in 2010 when she spent three months as an intern at Jamba Juice’s executive development program.
“It’s funny, I always dreamed that I wanted to own a smoothie place and when I was at Duke I thought it would be Smoothie King,” Beard recalled. “That time I spent at Jamba Juice was huge. Maybe down the road I’ll own one of those, too.”
Unlike Bird, Beard and Coleman, Angel McCoughtry is going out on her own, opening an ice cream shop in Atlanta this spring.
“It started two years ago, I eat ice cream all the time,” McCoughtry said. “It’s harder than I thought originally, but it’s so worth it.”
McCoughtry will have more free time on her hands than Beard and Coleman to get the store up and running. She announced earlier this month that she would be taking some time off from the WNBA season to rest her body after playing year-round since graduating from Louisville in 2009.
“I’ll be involved as much as I can outside of basketball,” she said. “We’re going to do a truck as well and hit all the festivals and events in Atlanta. I’m going to be hands on.”
McCoughtry said she was lactose intolerant growing up and wanted to make sure she had ice cream for people who couldn’t normally enjoy the frozen treat.
Moore found her own love of a dessert in Chloe’s Fruit. Like most pro athletes, the Minnesota Lynx star has always been health conscious of what food she eats. That’s why she’s become involved with the soft-serve fruit.
“I was originally introduced to Chloe’s Fruit by a friend. I thought it was such a great-tasting product,” Moore said. “On top of it, it’s guilt-free, so that’s what attracted me to it. I think in the time we live in with people starting to really invest in the health category in general, it’s important.” So she became an investor. Moore said for her, it’s so important to believe in the product first before making any kind of financial investment. She also has a stake in Beyond Meat, a company that makes plant-based protein.
“I think from early on in my career, I wanted to be someone who promotes health and wellness and nutrition,” Moore said. “These two companies definitely fit all those things.”
Coleman and Beard both had advice for other WNBA players who may want to get into the food business.
“Make sure you do your homework and start out with people you know,” Coleman said. “And most importantly, get involved with something you like.”
