Gon isn't also your typical pure shounen protagonist that can do no wrong, selfless and all that other good stuff. I love that gon did something "bad" like take vengeance against pitou. Gon felt "human" to me in a way.

Aah yes I completely agree there. I didn’t go too much on length about it (disclaimer i had a killer headache when I replied that “hxh isn’t your usual shounen” post) but Gon himself is a good representation of how it’s not an usual shounen.

I tend to be careful with some words like selfless/selfish because I consider neither really convey what Gon is really. He’s a real mix of complex choices and decisions, which is what makes him be this human to me. 

I think the thing with Gon is that I can’t see him in a sort of dicotomy of Good/Bad, and to me that already means he’s a wonderfully written character.

Like you say, Shounen Protagonists are usually Pure and Good main characters, who usually try to do no wrong ever, and if they do, it’s because they’re not the smarttest.

Gon isn’t like that, and tbh Gon is actually really clever. He has a hard time understanding math or very complicated stuff (making a decision for the future of his Nen and complicated Politics) but he’s very quick thinking, and he’s actually really clever when it comes to come up with strategy (and I suppose it has a lot to do with spending that much time in the wilds, you gotta react quickly with your instinct. So logical thinking pass second, it’s the survival instincts and strategical tactiques that you develop more).

As for his vision of Good and Bad, it’s certainely unique to himself, as how it concerns him and his friends directly above everything, but that’s already a lengthy stuff to adress in itself. But it’s true, in the end, he ends up in a bad moment against Pitou because of his revenge. There’s no glory in that, there’s no absolution. There is just pure chaos, that is rarely ever associated to a main character in Shounen.

So, ye I definitly agree, he doesn’t fit the Happy-go-lucky kind of Main Character we’re used to see in Shounen, a kind of character who always have the Moral Ground. Gon doesn’t always have the moral ground, and he’s not supposed to. 

The thing is that, shounen are usually targetted at young teens (and hxh is already maybe out there since it’s supposed to be adressed to older teens) - and usually, there’s morals and stuff like that to take out from those characters. Which is a good thing! I don’t want to come out as if I was judging the Shounen genre as a whole, because it has a lot of perks, and it’s really sweet to enjoy a cheerful story that is meant to make you feel better. Shounen will often have a main character that is a Cheerful Outcast, someone who’ll take what makes him different and embrace it, and shows happiness and how to always be morally good. Because it has in mind a lot of teens will read it, and if they find the Main cool, they may also be able to learn from them.

When it comes to hxh, especially Gon, it feels that it’s more “we’ll show you his story, and it’s not pretty”. Gon isn’t exactly an exemple to follow, he’s a character to experience having a journey with. Gon is treated as a character, but never as role model. He’s not supposed to be morally outstanding, because his point isn’t to show an exemple, but to be the driving character of his story. 

I don’t know how to word it properly, but imo that’s one of the reason Gon is that interesting as a protagonist. He has a lot to offer! I really love that.

It wasn’t that hard to know that with the (not that great) power comes (rather great) responsibilities. Not like she had such a huge freedom, but it was obvious that she could do much more than the ordinary servant. From the beggining of her life she knew that her marriage might not be happy and if there will be love, it would be more support than the base of it. Her husband was the one who would take over her safety and comfort, which would mean that every decision about her will be made by her husband. Not like she carred for it then.

Becuase in childhood she realised that she won’t be the priettiest or the most famous of her sisters, she decided to be the smarttest and wittiest of them. While some spended day on gossiping, she preffered to read, mostly in her breaks, still not announcing it aloud, knowing that a young lady shouldn’t brag about metals, stars and plants. Her nerves now were tensed, thinking if she would get the chance of having someone respectfull of her and her mind, or just a man who would close her in the house with the kids to raise and a widow as the only contact with the world.

When the door opened, her parents faces were representing just the certain hospitality, her sisters whispering, trying to look serious or gigling a bit, with Fahej presenting rather a curious look as she tried to peek over the shoulder of her sister, looking for her fiance.
