See new hybrid cruise ships

Check out this CNN video highlighting Norwegian cruise company Hurtigruten and their new hybrid cruises meant to reduce the company's environmental footprint. Hurtigruten's new hybrid cruise initiative comes as new regulations are put in place dramatically limiting the amount of sulfur and other chemicals ships are allowed to emit. The new Norwegian hybrid ships will combine marine and bio-gas fueled engines with electric power from giant battery packs, similar to a hybrid car, just at a much larger scale. These hybrid cruise ships would be the first in the world, and Hurtigruten hopes to become a world leader in this new maritime technology.

Nestlé plans to reduce greenhouse gases across its supply chain

Also from CNN, news that Nestlé, the world's largest food company, has declared that it will reach zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Doing so is complex for a massive company like Nestlé, which must protect itself from climate change, while also dealing with being seen by consumers as part of the climate change problem. Nestlé has already taken several steps, including using more sustainable ingredients, selling more plant-based food, developing greener packaging, planting trees and doing business with farms and other agricultural businesses using greener practices.

New technology turns any street lamp into a charging station for your electric car

From Curbed comes an article highlighting German company Ubitricity and their SimpleSocket tool. When coupled with a SmartCable, the two can be used to charge an EV from most existing city street lights, and also bill the user for the amount of electricity used. Where LED streetlights have been installed, more electricity can now be freed up to power EVs. Several towns in the UK, as well as parts of London, currently have SimpleSocket technology available for public use.

Conozca las innovaciones verdes creadas por el Reino Unido

Una innovación no es más que aplicar el ingenio humano, para encontrarle una solución nueva y creativa a un problema; pero las nuevas innovaciones verdes, además de cumplir con el criterio anterior, lo hacen sin dañar al Medio Ambiente.

La apuesta de los autos eléctricos no acaba de dispararse en Europa por varias razones, pero la más importante es sin lugar a dudas el hecho de que no existe un sistema eficaz en las ciudades que les permita a los usuarios recargar sus baterías cuando les resulte necesario.

En algunos barrios londineneses de Kensington y Chelsea las farolas no solo están conectadas a las redes de electricidad para iluminar las calles, sino que algunas de ellas, también actúan como puntos de carga para los coches eléctricos. Ubitricity, la empresa alemana que está detrás de esta iniciativa, está agregando “SimpleSockets” a las farolas existentes en el área.

Los SimpleSockets permiten a los propietarios de coches eléctricos usar un SmartCable para conectar sus vehículos a las farolas, que tienen energía de sobra, puesto que todas emplean focos del tipo LED. También se ha añadido un contador que indica a Ubitricity la cantidad de carga que se ha utilizado, para que pueda ser facturada al usuario.

Inglaterra tomó el ejemplo de Islandia y ha decidido aportar por la energía geotérmica, una renovable en la que los islandeses son líderes mundiales y que el Reino Unido pretende sea parte de su plan, que apunta a reducir la huella de carbón nacional.

Si bien es cierto que la magnitud de la actividad volcánica de Cornualles no tiene punto de comparación con la de Islandia, en el subsuelo de la zona se halló una gran variedad de granito caliente, lo que la convierte en un lugar viable para producir energía geotérmica.

Por otro lado la escasez de agua se está convirtiendo rápidamente, en una de las crisis globales de nuestros tiempos. En áreas como Oriente Medio es un imperativo reducir el uso del agua y cada vez es más necesario, encontrar nuevas formas de abordar el consumo de agua y de ahorrarla de manera significativa.

En torno a esto, los directores Graham Kelly y David Davis de los servicios de construcción del Reino Unido G & H Group han creado el Encore, una cisterna que utiliza la gravedad para limpiar los inodoros, reutilizando el agua condensada del aire acondicionado. Los dos afirman que el método es la “cisterna más ecológica disponible en el mercado mundial”.

Implementando la gravedad, en lugar de las bombas eléctricas, para alimentar los tanques con 12 litros de agua condensada y reciclada, la cisterna, Encore podría ahorrar a un hotel de 4 estrellas, un promedio de 2 millones de litros de agua al año.
