Ultimate Guide  Smart Light Switch
We have compiled the ultimate guide for smart light switches in this post. You will find everything you need to select the best smart light switch for you home. This includes how to install it and how to hire a contractor who can install it for you. You can jump below to find a specific topic.
What Should You Do With A Smart Light Shift? Smart light switches can be one of the most luxurious upgrades to your smart home. My favorite thing about coming home at night is being able to lay in bed and tell my smart house to turn my lights off. Smart light switches allow you to control your home's lighting from anywhere in the house.
You don't need to be concerned about your kids turning on the porch lights or leaving them in the basement before you go to bed. You can control your smart lights from anywhere you are with smart light switches.
Smart lighting may appeal to you for more reasons than convenience. Smart light switches will increase home security, save you energy, let you set schedules, and even create a more relaxed atmosphere in your home.
To make burglars think you're at home, you can remotely turn your lights on or off to increase security. Your smart lighting system can also be equipped with motion sensors that can trigger smart lights to appear as if someone is home, based on certain events.
Smart light switches can help you save money by giving you complete control of your lighting system. A smart light switch can be turned off by simply pressing a button from your phone. I also find that I am more likely than others to turn off the lights as I go through a room, even though I'm not right in front of it.
You can turn off smart light switches on multiple floors if you live in a multistory home. This will help you save money and energy. There's no need to worry about your family leaving the lights on. Set a timer to turn off your lights or turn on lights outside at night. Turn them off at sunrise.
How does Smart Light Switches Function? Smart light switches are wired to the existing wiring of your home to supply power. They can also be connected wirelessly to your WiFi network to enable you to control smart homes from your phone or voice. You will need to pair your smart lights switches with a compatible smart voice assistant, such as Alexa and Google Home, in order to enable voice control. Some smart light switch connect directly to your wifi network. Other smart light switches need a smart home hub to connect to your wifi network for smart control.
Once you have connected to your WiFi network, you can control smart light switches anywhere in your house or remotely via your smartphone.
Smart Light Switches: What are you capable of doing? Smart light switches enable you to control lighting remotely using your phone's voice assistants or from your computer. Smart light switches are controlled by your phone. They can be used to dim or turn on your lights. You can also create scenes using multiple lights to adjust your lighting to suit your needs, such as for dinner parties, bedtime, and watching movies. Other smart home devices can trigger scenes, such as smart buttons, motion sensors or smart doors.
Tumblr media
With voice control of smart lights switches, you can use voice assistants such Google Home, Alexa and Siri to turn your smart light switch on or off using your voice.
To turn on or turn off lights, you can say "Alexa," which will turn on the living-room lights. You can also adjust the dimming level with your voice. Simply say "Alexa," and change the brightness to 50%. If you have smart lights placed in rooms, Alexa can turn off any group of lights by asking it to. Voice assistants also allow you to trigger scenes by asking them to turn on a certain scene.
Smart Light Switch Dimmers Why You Should Be Installed Here are the best smart switch dimmers, as well the best on/off smart switches. Dimmer switch for led lights are the best choice for smart light switches. They offer greater versatility, can save energy, and perform exactly as standard on/off switches. California and other states have adopted energy efficiency standards for dimmer lights. Dimmer switches can help to save energy as they are more energy efficient than standard on-off switches.
Many smart dimmers available on the market have independent dimming adjustment switches directly on the switch. This allows them to work as a normal on/off switch. When you turn the light on or off, they will switch to the last dimming setting that you had. When you don't wish to use dimming, they act like an on/off button. You have the option to use the dimming functionality, but they don't require you to.

How many hermits (and friends) does it take to change a lightbulb?
You’ve just moved in to Hermit Hills (or Hermitopia, or New Hermitville, or wherever you may be) and need a favor from one (or more) of your new neighbors to change a certain burn-out lightbulb. The lightbulb is a small, 60-watt incandescent lightbulb that fits into an E26 base, whereas the socket in question is a ceiling 8 feet (2.43 meters) off the floor. There is a small 2 ft (0.61m) step stool available.
Who do you pick?
Bdubs goes into the room. After about a minute, you hear a bit of muttering.
He comes out and heads toward the supply closet, returning with a 6-foot stepladder.
Cubfan enters the room holding a toolbox, but it takes him much longer to do the job than you expected.
After about an hour, he emerges.
You find that he has changed not only the assigned lightbulb but also all eight lightbulbs in the room to high-efficiency LED bulbs and installed a dimmer switch.
Docm walks in, followed by a small rover-like robot.
It's holding a telescopic lightbulb changer pole, doing the job for him in minutes.
You wonder how much time he must have spent on it to not have to do this work.
Etho changes the lightbulb, but it starts to flicker soon after he’s left.
Upon closer inspection, you discover that he has replaced the lightbulb with a smart bulb that he set to appear to flicker randomly.
False changes the lightbulb for a more energy-efficient 9-watt LED bulb. It’s exactly the same size but noticeably brighter.
You have to admit it’s somehow an aesthetic improvement despite not quite matching the other bulbs in the room.
Gem comes to change the lightbulb. She beckons you into the room with her.
You witness her staring intently at the lightbulb, which suddenly flickers back on after a few seconds of suspense.
Both of you shrug at each other.
When you ask Scar, he says he can't stand to change lightbulbs either, for they're the most annoying things in the world, right next to wet socks.
It takes you a moment to catch what he means. You're embarrassed that you asked to begin with.
Grian says he can’t make it, having had to “sort his socks by color.” You leave for a lunch break.
Mysteriously, when you return, you find a trail of slime leading into the room, up the wall, and across the ceiling directly to the light socket. The lightbulb has been changed, although the replacement has a bit of slimy residue.
Hypno goes into the room, closes the door, and emerges not even a minute later.
Impressively, you realize he has somehow changed the lightbulb in that short timeframe and put away the stepstool.
Impulse enters the room, and leaves a while thereafter.
After he’s left, you notice that not only has the lightbulb been changed, but the supply box of assorted lightbulbs has been neatly organized and labeled into different containers that weren’t there before.
Iskall changes the lightbulb.
When you go to inspect his handiwork, you notice that the new lightbulb is ever so slightly larger than the other ones, although it’s not apparent that it’s brighter.
iJevin changes the lightbulb to a light blue-tinted 9W LED bulb.
You can’t explain why, but it seems to tie the room together and decide to do the same to the other seven bulbs.
Joe Hills changes the lightbulb.
After Joe has installed it, you discover that this particular lightbulb inexplicably now only turns off when the light switch is “on” and vice versa. The problem persists even after a professional electrician has had a look at it.
Both you and Joe are at a loss for words.
Keralis changes the lightbulb, replacing it with a high-lumen 35-watt LED bulb.
You have to admit that the room has never been brighter.
Mumbo attempts to change the lightbulb.
The first one he installs, an LED bulb, just plain doesn’t work out of the box. The second one works for a brief moment, and then fizzles out within 30 seconds. The third one, an incandescent bulb, spontaneously explodes on the table while his back is turned. Oh my, this has gone horribly wrong.
He shakes the first lightbulb in abject frustration before screwing it into the socket in desperation.
Miraculously, it works.
Pearl goes into the room with a suspicious bulge under her hoodie.
She leaves shortly after, snickering to herself. Curiously, you inspect the scene.
It’s been changed, all right… There's a sopping wet pickle stuck into the socket, and an upside-down pickle jar on a nearby table.
You wonder why you even bothered to call her.
Rendog goes in to change the lightbulb.
Unfortunately, he quickly realizes you’ve run out of LED and incandescent replacements. No matter, there's a fluorescent bulb that fits.
“It ain’t purty, but it works…”
Skizz waltzes in. Not long after, you hear a crash.
You open the door to check on him and find him on his butt next to a collapsed stepstool, having tripped on it. He’s dropped the bulb he was holding, but it thankfully isn’t broken.
As he leaves, you realize he’s left his phone on the table (specifically, on a Google search that says “how to change a lightbulb without injuring yourself”) and run after him to return it.
Joel comes in, bragging about how you called the right guy for the job and that “nobody’s better at changing lightbulbs than me, totally.”
Three minutes later, you hear him mildly cursing out the stepstool, which is refusing to cooperate with him. He eventually gets the bulb changed, though not without some fussing over which replacement bulb to pick and insulting the other options.
Stress arrives to do the job.
Soon, it becomes apparent she’s taking a little while, so you go on lunch break.
When you return, you find a magenta sticky note on the door that reads “ty love, it’s gorgeous now!”
You discover that she’s switched out all the lightbulbs for 9W pink-tinted LED bulbs.
Tango enters the room and, after a brief look around, leaves for the supply closet.
He returns, carrying a ladder, and enters the room again.
You hear him making funny noises as his brain processes the fact that a ladder and a stepstool are already in the room.
Beef arrives to do the job.
After he leaves, you notice he hasn’t changed the assigned lightbulb at all. A perfectly fine lightbulb in a room across the house, though, has been changed.
You wonder why you even bothered to mark the room.
Wels changes the lightbulb and leaves in a bit of a haste.
After his departure, you see that all the containers that Impulse organized are now also labeled and stacked up in an orderly manner. The old lightbulb has been set to the side.
xB arrives to change the lightbulb, leaving shortly thereafter.
You find that he has installed a plug adapter into the light socket, into which is plugged a table lamp that wasn’t there before. Said lamp is on a nearby table, the almost-too-short cord dangling loosely in midair.
You wonder how he got the lamp in without you noticing.
Xisuma changes the lightbulb without much tomfoolery.
After he leaves, you find an unopened packet of tea bags on a nearby table, an empty, unused teacup and saucer, and a thank-you note.
Cleo comes to change the lightbulb.
You enter the room to inspect their work, and then notice that they have also completed the floral arrangement on the table that you were going to set up.
It has exceptional attention to detail.
Zedaph changes the lightbulb.
At first, you think it’s malfunctioning because it keeps turning on and off seemingly randomly without anyone touching the switch.
However, it becomes apparent that the new lightbulb he installed has a motion sensor built into it that turns it on when it detects movement.
You conclude that as amusing as it is, it’s not very practical.
Martyn comes in to change the lightbulb.
As he’s explaining to you what he’s going to do in great detail, including joking about threatening the lightbulb verbally, both of you notice it flickering back to life.
Regardless, he changes the light bulb, as he “was going to do it anyway.”
Lizzie comes in to change the lightbulb.
She accidentally drops the first replacement on the floor, breaking it.
The second one somehow ends up being lost through an open window when she trips and sends it flying.
The stepstool nearly collapses on the third try, but she gets it done - just in time for Joel to arrive just as she’s finished to see if she needs help.
BigB doesn’t show. Instead, this guy calling himself “Terry” shows up.
You’re reluctant to let him in, but Lizzie vouches for him.
After he’s changed the lightbulb and left, you notice a pile of cookie crumbs on the carpet underneath the light.
Jimmy comes to change the lightbulb.
He’s interrupted by Grian, who finally decides to show up only to heckle him at the window.
Frustrated, Jimmy closes the window and draws the blinds - then realizes he’s misplaced the replacement bulb thanks to the distraction. Guess who snatched it?
“GRIANN!!”
Scott comes to change the lightbulb. He’s in the room for a very long time.
At the end of the day, you give the door a knock. “Come in!”
He unpacked all the moving boxes and decorated the entire room of his own accord. It’s quite cozy, you admit.

The weird hybrid bedside table/floor lamp I just got has one of those R7S 200-300W halogen flood lamp bulbs. Fortunately they make LED replacements but I'm always thrown to remember how energy intensive lighting used to be! Do you want to run literally my entire gaming PC full tilt or do you want to illuminate one (1) halogen lamp
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The little foot pedal/dimmer switch thing seems not all there, which is fine, the plan was to replace it with a smart switch of some kind. I'll have to dissect that and trace out the wiring.
Tumblr media
I do love the smell of hot halogen burning off dust, but I do not love the smell of a light that costs four Kč an hour to illuminate.

JUNE 8th – MIDNIGHT SNACK
Morpheus woke up in the middle of the night, not knowing why. That was, until his stomach growled like the dragons do in Hob’s fantasy movies. He had been pretty busy – he looked at the clock – yesterday, particularly once they hit the bed so…
He got up very quietly and gently – he didn’t want to wake up Hob – and went to the kitchen. Hob was smart enough to put dimmer switches so they wouldn’t be blinded when turning on the lights. The fridge didn’t contain anything interesting (for now) but the cupboards were full of biscuits and – aha! – there they were! His cupcakes! Chocolate, red velvet, cinnamon toast and many more.
Tumblr media
He was about to take one (a lemon drop) when he heard Hob’s voice.
“You really didn’t thought that you could have a midnight snack without me, did you Dove?”
“You were tired. I didn’t want to wake you.”
“Aww! It’s so nice. But since when do I say no to a guilty pleasure, huh? Take your cupcakes out, I want some.”
Once the cupcakes were on a tray, they both went outside. It was dark but the fireflies gave them a nice sight. They sat on the bench, happy to be next each other, not saying a word. Once the try was empty, Morpheus put his head on Hob’s shoulder and Hob kissed his lover’s unruly hair. They stayed a few moments like this before returning to their bed. They were content.

Along different lines but roughly the same sentiment:
I was thinking, last night as I tried to get to sleep, about how nice single-purpose devices are. Devices that aren't meant for internet browsing and all the varied uses that come with it, even if some of them do technically have the capability. Things we don't even think of when we say 'device', even.
It's rainy lately, and there's an occasionally leaky section of roofing in the bedroom that should have been fixed after last year's wet season, right along the same ceiling beam that the wires for the overhead light are attached to. I've been keeping the wall switch off because I don't want to risk water finding its way to a powered wire.
I don't have an overhead light, but lanterns are great. My flashlights kept flaking out, last year, but there's a great electric lantern that I've got now. It shines reliably and can be collapsed down into itself-- a little bit to block off some of the light, or a lot to shut it off when I'm done with it. It makes sure I don't trip getting into bed, provides a gentle light if I want to read for a while, and hangs from the doorknob when I leave the room for the day.
What got me on this line of thought: I don't have a way to tell time in my room, currently. I don't have a smartphone, my laptop is not great for carrying room to room (not actually heavy or unwieldy, just chronic pain), and there hasn't been an analogue clock on the wall in nearly a decade. The wall switch turns off the whole room's power, including the alarm clock. And... when was the last time I saw an actual watch?
Not a smart watch that has a screen and internet connection, but an actual watch with a second hand that goes tick-tick-tick? An actual watch that tells the time well if you know how to read it, just the time, using the whole of its face instead of shrinking it to hide between six or twelve other distracting functions?
To be fair, I might not know if half the population of my city wore watches every day. I didn't go out much even before covid times. But honestly, I bet it's not near 1% of people who wear watches ever, these days.
My elementary school, I think in second grade, gave me a cheap watch and lessons on how to tell time. A friend in middle school gifted me a pretty silver and pink one for a birthday, that I unfortunately haven't seen for years. I never noticed anybody wearing a watch to high school-- we all had phones, it would have been redundant. But I think it's a loss, that people don't consider watches much anymore.
And... I had an E-reader for a while. Nook simple touch with glowlight, or something like that. It was smaller and easier to transport than a laptop, but unlike a phone, still large enough hug to my chest like I might a really good book. Its screen did not rely on bright light to display, so that wasn't a constant battery drain when there was outside light to read by, and even when the internal lighting was on, it could be set way dimmer and gentler than any other computer screen I've ever seen. It could connect to the internet, but it didn't need to, my dad would collect stories on his computer and transfer them on by USB cable. The most WIFI access I'd give it would be a minute or so after a daylight savings time change, or a particularly long while without charge, to give the clock a chance correct. For a long time, I could get weeks or even months of use from a single charging. Read before school, during lunch break, after school, by sun or room lighting; and then read in bed by its internal lighting. Hours a day of reading, for years... until the times the Nook would run out of charge got close enough together (after a few replacement batteries, each harder to source and failing faster) that it didn't seem worthwhile to keep using it. I had my own laptop by that point, anyways, and browsing the internet directly was more efficient for finding new stories.
When I get sick, though, there's often this point where headaches or nausea make computer screens impractical. And, especially now that my chronic pain makes reading a paper book challenging, I really miss the much gentler screen of my Nook. It was great for times like that. But last time I tried to charge it, it took about an hour to even get out of complete shutdown mode, let alone to a level usable not still plugged in...
A smartphone or a laptop is a portable light, and clock, and E-reader, and much more. But there's a lot to be said for devices that, instead of trying to be (or trying to pretend to be) one-size-fits-all and every-purpose, simply do one thing, or a few things, very well in exactly the way the particular owner needs. For me: a lantern to light my way, a watch for compact portable time-keeping, an E-reader with gentle light for those times when I'm too sensitive to movement or stimulation for other forms of entertainment. (At least, hopefully I'll have that whole collection at once someday.)
Internet devices are so much more fragile, too, than ones that are mostly self-contained. At least user interface wise. Individual apps and the overarching operating system change all the time, often not positively. Whether the updates mean to protect against security exploits, to make a change the programmers think most people will like, or to include more ads, there's a decent chance at some point something you liked will get lost along the way. Such as, a lack of ads. More ads is never appreciated, but much more common than less ads. But also... some feature that only 20% of people use regularly, replaced by a related but not interchangeable feature somebody thinks the other 80% of people will find more useful? Hope you're not part of the 20% who relied on the way things were before...
smartphone storage plateauing in favor of just storing everything in the cloud is such dogshit. i should be able to have like a fucking terabyte of data on my phone at this point. i hate the fucking cloud

Smart Lighting Industry Size, Trends, and Business Outlook Report 2030
The global smart lighting market size is expected to reach USD 72.35 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 22.1% from 2023 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The market growth is attributable to the development of smart cities, the rising trend of smart homes, intelligent street lighting systems, and the need for implementing energy-efficient lighting systems. Although smart lights are expensive compared to general lights, their advantages outweigh the overall installation cost. However, the high price of smart lights restricted market growth as the purchasing capacity of the middle-class income group declined during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new trend of home automation is penetrating houses with middle and high-income group consumers. The trend is further fueled by constantly evolving IoT technology for smart homes; wherein smart lights can be connected to control the functions of electronic devices. Moreover, personal assistants such as Alexa, Crotona, and Siri can be synced with a smart light app to control lighting hue, brightness, on/off time, and other functions using only voice commands. Similar transformation using smart lights has also penetrated the commercial spaces. Retail has emerged as the top beneficiary of smart lighting. Apart from energy efficiency, the “smart” lighting systems installed in retail stores are leveraging Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology which allows LED light fixtures to communicate wirelessly with the antennas and cameras in smartphones. Thus smart lighting technology helps retailers reach customers visiting the shop premises to send offers and product availability information based on their purchasing pattern. Similar add-on integrated functions are expected to augment the market growth in the upcoming years.
