🏞️ EXPLORING SMARDALE GILL: AN AMAZING VALLEY STROLL
🚶‍♀️ Smardale Gill, an appealing, steep-sided valley, can be accessed on foot from various points. You could, for example, opt for a countryside walk starting from Ravenstonedale village, or track the dismantled railway line from Newbiggin-on-Lune. Both villages are conveniently sited alongside the A685, between Kirkby Stephen and Tebay, ensuring hassle-free accessibility.
🚂 The serpentine Scandal Beck meanders through Smardale Gill, shadowed by the old disused Stainmore Railway that marks its course higher up on the valley's western edge.
🏰 Smardale Gill plays host to a range of attractions. The majestic Smardale Gill Viaduct, fashioned from local stone, proudly showcases its 14 high arches. The 18th-century Smardale Bridge, a curved stone packhorse bridge, shares the area with a prominent old quarry and two fascinating limekilns.
🥾 For those who relish both nature and heritage, Smardale Gill offers an enticing walking experience.

We had a weekend break in Kirkby stephen in Cumbria, a place we have never been to before.
A walk along a disused railway at Smardale took us to Smardale Gill viaduct, where we continued on to a hike across the hills and back round to the car park. The weather was dry, and the sun shone through at times, although atmospheric cloud and mist hung over the surrounding hills. The autumn colours I love so much had finally set in.

SMARDALE GILL, NEAR RAVENSTONEDALE, YORKSHIRE DALES 🌳🦋 A visit to Smardale Gill in Yorkshire Dales, near Ravenstonedale, is a journey through time and natural beauty. Home to ancient woodlands, rich in insects and birds, and stunning limestone grasslands that burst into colour every summer, this area is a nature-lover's paradise.
The reserve's diverse flora includes many unique species such as northern marsh butterflies, fragrant and common spotted orchids, and the melancholy thistle. 🌸
Keep an eye out for the rare Scotch argus and northern brown argus butterflies. The Scandal Beck river, an Eden tributary, also hosts globally endangered species including white-clawed crayfish, river lamprey, and otters. 🦦
Traces of human history are also evident, from ancient Romano-British settlements and a 15th-century pack horse bridge to the viaduct, old lime kilns, and charcoal pitsteads that reveal the area's industrial past. ️
Stand on the magnificent Smardalegill Viaduct, a Grade 2 listed structure saved from demolition by the Northern Viaduct Trust, and marvel at the stunning vistas of this timeless landscape. 🌳🦋🇬🇧
