Bronski Beat and Pet Shop Boys' Neil remix gay classic Why?

Bronski Beat have remixed their hit Why? with new vocals from Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Bronski Beat’s iconic gay anthems Smalltown Boy and Why? as well as the band’s debut album The Age of Consent.

Why? was the British synthpop band’s second hit of 1984 and highlighted violence and prejudice against gay people. The band dedicated the song to gay playwright Drew Griffiths, who was murdered that year.

Bronski Beat vocalist Jimmy Sommerville is the last surviving member of the group’s original lineup.

This week, he released a new remix of Why? from DJ Tom Stephen, aka Superchumbo, which reworks the song and includes new spoken word vocals from the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant.

“I’ve known Tom a good few years now and when I asked him if he’d like to do a remix of Why? he said yes straight away,” Jimmy said.

“The song is a part of his story. I was so moved when he shared that story with me.

“The lyric is our shared experience as it is for so many others… and forty years later the lyric still tells the story of LGBTQI+… the hate, the violence, the discrimination, the imprisonment and state-sanctioned murder of those who dare to be their true selves.

“It’s happening somewhere right now as I write this.”

Neil Tennant joins Bronski Beat’s Why? remix

Tom said after he’d finished the new version, Jimmy requested the inclusion of a few more of the song’s lyrics.

“I’d recently watched a Pet Shop Boys documentary where Neil Tennant read some of his lyrics, which moved me to tears,” Tom explained.

“I imagined Neil speaking these lyrics, creating a powerful contrast.

“I left Neil a voicemail on my way to a gig abroad. By the time I reached Heathrow Airport, I had his vocals on my phone, added them to the track on my flight, and played it that night!”

Jimmy said hearing what Tom had done was “mind-blowing”.

“To hear Neil, one of our greatest pop lyricists speaking my words… I was f__king whooping like a banshee around my kitchen,” he said.

“When Tom told me Neil would like to contribute and speak the lyrics of Why? and to hear Tom’s musical reworking of the track is f__king mind-blowing.

“It brings it into the here and now and also retains its history with my original vocals. I genuinely felt moved.”

Bronski Beat’s debut album The Age of Consent in 1984 was unapologetically and overtly about queer rights. The album’s title referenced the inequal age of consent for same-sex relationships at the time.

The lead single Smalltown Boy told the story of a young man forced out of his homophobic hometown, seeking acceptance in the city.

Remixes of that song by producers ABSOLUTE. and Planningtorock dropped in May.

Pet Shop Boys released new music in April

Meanwhile, the Pet Shop Boys released their latest album Nonetheless in April.

Bugge Wesseltoft & Prins Thomas - a tribute of sorts to the ECM albums of the 70s

A long time ago, in a Norway far far away in time, keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft introduced his New Conception of Jazz to the world. We’re talking about the late 90s, when Bugge’s cosmopolitan blend of jazz, hiphop and techno beats was pretty much the coolest music coming out of Norway at that moment. That was a golden time for Norwegian music, in fact, when the rest of the world began to sit up and take notice that something was stirring up north, and realized the music was more than just glacial tones hurtled from icy mountaintops and frozen lakes. This was the sound of urban Scandinavia. A few years later came the electronic dance genre ‘space disco’. Along with Todd Terje, Bjørn Torske and Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas was at the epicentre of this next big wave to surge out of Norway. Now, the two generations have come together in this exclusive collaboration between Bugge and Prins Thomas on the Smalltown Supersound label. Jazz and electronics combine for that energising vitamin D shot of Nordic sunshine. The Rainbow Studio in Oslo is a familiar name to anyone who follows the ECM label – many of its classic 1970s jazz albums were recorded there under the eye of resident producer Jan Erik Kongshaug. Bugge and Thomas booked a couple of sessions at the legendary space with Kongshaug at the controls, and improvised some tunes in the style and spirit of some of their favourite ECM moments, like the fresh, open sounds of Codona, Egberto Gismonti, Oregon and Kenny Wheeler. Bugge had previously done a remix of Thomas’s ‘Bobletekno’ in 2015 but this is the first time they have worked together as active musicians. The results – also partly taped at Thomas’s home studio – fuse programmed rhythms, live synths and percussion, all captured in sumptuously spacious acoustics. For an even more authentic touch they called up one of their all time local heroes and one of Norway’s most famous jazz drummers, Jon Christensen, who’s been the go-to guy for Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett and many more. At 75 years he’s still pretty spry behind the kit, as you’ll hear on several tracks here. Make no mistake, though, this is not retro pastiche but contemporary music, coasting on gently insistent programmed grooves and bubbling basslines. The whole thing feels not so much like a consciously hip fusion of DJ and jazz musician, more like two great musicians totally enjoying themselves.
