My stream of conscious having just finished the 4th episode of The Heart Killers:
I’m so confused… I thought they were hit men. But they also plant bugs and tap into software like spies. And they’re also just plain thieves who break into safes to steal jewels? And they have such an extensive wardrobe. Did they also rent a fire truck or hop out Fadel’s jeep dressed like firemen? Did they start a fire? Is there a cat stuck in a tree? Where did Bison get a fresh janitor’s outfit w/ no wrinkles & a PE outfit in their sizes in less than an hour? Speaking of which, where in the world did Style get a burger costume? I can only imagine it’s handmade. What other crafts does Style like to do? When will Style ever help his dad at the shop? Does Style order crop tops or know how to hem and crops any shirt he likes himself? Is he bisexual? Everyone has chemistry with everyone. When will they have a foursome? Is that incest? And why do Fadel and Bison have a burger restaurant as a cover up in the first place? A cover up for what exactly? It’s not a money laundering front. Is it illegal to arrest small business owners in Thailand? Is it truly just Fadel’s passion project? Why does he love burgers? Where did he learn to cook and manage a business? Did he take online classes while training to be a killer? Why did Mother agree to it? Is she a shareholder? Can he cook anything else? How does Fadel not pull his hair out cooking and running food and bussing tables by himself? When will he hire real staff? The most shady part is that there are literally zero employees other than him & Bison and sometimes Style. What is happening?! Why does Kant never lock his door? When is he going to get a ring doorbell? Why do Fadel and Bison live in a mansion? Not really keeping a low profile. Do they have savings accounts? Or do they get an allowance from Mother? Who is Mother and why is she so bad at Mothering? What even is Keen? He looks older than both Bison and Fadel so why is he not “in the field” yet? Is he such a good assistant that Mother doesn’t want him to get killed? How did they train to become hitmen? Where at? Are they actually Mother’s adopted sons or what? Which came first, the adoption or the hitman training? How and when did Bison discover his kink? Does he listen to Rihanna? Does he go on r/bdsm? When will he get to use his ball gag? Why did Kant take a picture of it? How did no one notice him drugging Bison’s drink? He did it so conspicuously! Why would the bartender agree to make those shots and not call security immediately? Dude’s sus! Will they start a gay bowling league? Can Fadel bowl? Will Style have to get a C-section? How in the world are they going to be able to raise a kid? They’re both so busy. Is Bison ready to be an uncle? What are the hours Heart Burger is open? Do they have milkshakes? When will we see a shrew?
Phew!😮💨 I could do this all day… Anyway, so far I’m loving this series! Shakespeare would be proud (and I actually mean that)

You ready for this?
The quickest of quick thoughts: I loved this show and hated the ending, but not for the reason you think.
This is gonna be one of my big meta beast-sized posts, skip to the end for the final review.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e1c3a3be80c4e489a6c07ac410289f51/4fd24cc8182d671e-16/s540x810/dec155dd266af2dc83cd916f5935a173687bbffe.jpg)
Some Historical Context for I Feel You Linger In The Air - Thailand 1925-1932
I love history and so here's some info that any Thai watcher would likely know, but the rest of us might not... ready?
The Historical Stage:
Burma (now Myanmar) to the west is occupied by the British.
The French hold Vietnam to the east.
Everyone is bickering over what would become Cambodia & Laos.
China occasionally gets involved from the North (also, lots of immigrants from China at this time accounting for a large percentage of the merchant/middle class)
Eventually, Japan would invade during WWII.
In part, The Kingdom of Siam was kept a "neutral" party because none of the surrounding colonial powers wanted to risk offending any of the other players in the area.
Siam re-negotiated sovereignty in 1920 (from USA) and in 1925 (from France & Britain). But during the time of this show (late 1929) it was back to it's customary type-rope balancing act of extreme diplomacy with the allied western colonial powers that surrounded it.
Recognizing that Thailand was never colonized (although it was invaded), it's boarders were constantly nibbled at and it was "ambassador-occupied" off and on by westerners whose military backing and exploitive business concerns simply outmatched the monarchy, especially in the technology department (as well as by reputation on the global stage at the time).
In other words, the farang in this show (James & Robert) were always gonna be both the baddies and the power players of the narrative. (Farang is the Thai word for non-Thai's of European descent, the word means guava.)
The king of Siam at the time (Vajiravudh AKA Rama VI) was initially somewhat popular but also regarded as overly extravagant since Siam had been hit by a major postwar recession in 1919. It should also be noted that King Vajiravudh had no son because he was most likely gay (which at the time did not much concern the Siamese popular opinion, except that it undermined the stability of the monarchy leaving it without an heir).
He "died suddenly" in 1925 (age 44) with the monarchy weakened and succession handed off to his younger brother.
In 1932 a small circle of the rising bourgeoisie (all of whom had studied in Europe, mostly Paris), supported by some military, seized power from the monarchy in a practically nonviolent Siamese Revolution installing a constitutional monarchy. This is mentioned in IFYLITA in the last few episodes but did not (apparently) appear in the original novel.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/31983b13104dc686ec160bcfa8a4c170/4fd24cc8182d671e-29/s540x810/7e9bf2bb680ec49ac2818eef019353a36c8eb0df.jpg)
Siam would then go through:
dictatorship,
WWII,
Japanese invasion,
Allied occupation,
democratic elections,
military junta,
the Indochina wars,
communist insurgency,
more democracy and popularization movements,
multiple coups,
more junta,
more monarchy,
eventually leading us to the somewhat chaotic insanity of Thai politics we have today. (Which is, frankly, a mix of monarchy, junta, democracy, egocentric popularism, and bribery.)
The Filming of I Fell You Linger in the Air
The director if this show, Tee Bundit (Hidden Agenda, Step by Step, Lovely Writer, TharnType), has never particularly impressed or offended me as a director. I would have called him simply "workmanlike" in execution: not offensive, serviceable.
So much so that I spent some time hunting for info on IFYLITA's cinematographer (who remains uncredited on MDL) because this one, of all Tee's pantheon, is ultra stylish. It, frankly, felt too good for him.
Specifically, there is a repeated visual motif in intimacy scenes of either Yai or Jom being filmed from behind a screen/drape/curtain making them seem more translucent, like a ghost or spirit. While the other half of the pair is filmed with sharp clarity. In the first half of the series this is more likely to be Yai (an unknown and mysterious element), as the show progresses, it's more likely to be Jom (the person outside of place and time, destined to vanish all together). This cleverly conveys story, tension, and foreshadow (future shadow?)
Occasionally we shift over so they both become obscured and then clear again.
This stylized version of dirty framing and filters is used to foreshadow and then constantly remind us about that Jom slipped (and is slipping) through time and the disconnect that causes to his sense of reality and purpose, and to his burgeoning relationship.
For example, the scene where Yai is drunk and asleep in his bed. The first time Jom is sitting in a chair drawing him. Yai is blurry behind the screen while Jom is solid and sharp.
This filming technique combined with dirty and peekaboo framing is being used to give the watchers the impression of looking at something we maybe shouldn't, like we are being creepy and intruding on their private time. After all, they can see EACH OTHER clearly, it's only us who have the visual impairment.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d85bf4d1f5cad75b23bb96c3c44a03ff/4fd24cc8182d671e-1e/s540x810/6154d18fdb7af4fc54d94120df5d268f226248d6.jpg)
This gives us a sense of doom and discomfort and slight sensation that we shouldn't be there. We shouldn't be watching. But ALSO that we too are outside of time, filtered by the future.
In other words his sense of displacement is being used to trigger ours visually.
It's all quite clever.
It's both beautiful and atmospheric and discomforting and touch stressful. Meaning that it is ALSO a visual vehicle to drive narrative tension. As effective as scary music, perhaps more so in this show (since I personally found the musical motifs and refrains somewhat overused.)
Linguistic corner
The word for reflection and shadow is the same in Thai.
Note on the por/phor/phô honorific in Thai
I have not encountered it before in BL. I am indebted to @embraceyourfandom for the following information;
Phô is a paternal honorific, luang phô is used for respected monks. It basically means father. And is oft seen as male honorific for village elders. It's also used as a male prefix in the names of several occupations like:
พ่อครัว phô khrua (khrúa= kitchen -> chef)
พ่อค้า phô khá (khá= trade -> merchant)
พ่อมด phô mót (mót= person of occult knowledge -> wizard)
พ่อบ้าน phô bân (bân =house -> butler) - most relevant
So, Yai's use is probubly foreshadowing that Jom will be a butler for his house, and is primitively referring to him with this title.
All that said, phô can also be used by a "man who is older/higher on hierarchy to refer to a younger/lower on hierarchy man with intimacy and/or affection."
I think all this has to do with Jom's demonstration of education. Yai figured out early on that one of the reasons Jom doesn't belong and cannot fit in with the servants is that he is more educated than a peasant (of this time period), which for Yai adds up to him being originally from a higher status and possibly wealthy family, especially since Jom speaks English and has travelled (he has a non-northern accent).
There is very little Thai middle class at the beginning of the 1920s since trade is being dominated/dictated by the West, or Chinese merchant operations, and Siam is a monarchy. So for a nationalize Thai citizen educated means military, landed gentry with trade operations (like Yai), royal/political/diplomatic connections, or... none of the above. This changes, especially in the south, throughout this decade (as it did in other parts of the world). So there is a rising bourgeoisie going on in the background but it's not that obvious in Chang Mai at this time.
What Jom's educated lack of status means to Yai is that Jom's family either got wiped out or politically disenfranchised possibly as part of the 1912 attempted coups (or even WWI)? This would be mystifying for Yai because Jom doesn't act like he comes from a military family at all. So his background and status is very confusing for Yai, but Yai does know one thing...
Jom is NOT lower class by the standards of Yai's temporal worldview and existence.
For a young man to be educated and yet entirely alone is very dangerous and suspicious. Also, let's be clear, Jom doesn't look or act like a laborer. He red flags "cultured" all over the place.
Yai is paternalistic and caring towards Jom out the gate because Yai has a big ol'crush but also because he recognizes "his own" is trying to survive while isolated and scared.
Yai wants to rescue Jom. Yai is an ineffectual 20 year old gay intellectual. But poor thing sure tries.
Let's Talk About How I Felt About I Feel You Linger in the Air
The historical aspect was great.
I adore historical romances and we almost never get them in BL. I was always gonna be biased towards this show. (As indeed I am towards Nobleman Ryu's Wedding, Tinted with You, and To Sir With Love.) Aside from some classic Thai BL production issues (less than normal, this is very high production value for Thailand) and my issues around the sound track and repetitive repriens (which frankly were more noticeable because I binged the last half) I have no complaints on that score (heh heh).
The surrounding support cast were all quite good and we even got us some lesbians!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/53a17abae2599422f1fa434ce5fa402d/4fd24cc8182d671e-7c/s540x810/670460a381f4015912a3da33f790f1db3f515959.jpg)
The emotional and narrative tensions were excellent.
Any issues I had with pacing came from focus on characters that didn't interest me, but probubly did interest others. I wasn’t wild or particularly interested in the family drama or the side characters/couples, but they were necessary to make this a fully fleshed story with historical context and to give Yai much needed characterization. Also this use of a ensemble cast is very close to Thailand's lakorn heart, even thought this one had way less scenery chewing ludicrous soapy drama (thank heavens).
I was delighted that external threat, stressors, and conflict drove this plot. That's refreshing in BL.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f065375abb5fe59c5bbcb938e32a1c80/4fd24cc8182d671e-40/s540x810/3aca9b55ba42be546fe7bc62c43757aac7676dd8.jpg)
I have no arguments with the chemistry and kisses and sex scenes were tasteful and lovely, occasionally even heart-wrenching, and it's nice to see Thailand especially use physical intimacy to drive plot, and not the other way around.
I love historicals partly because every tiny touch can have such lingering significance, they're very elegant in their chaste physicality. This show didn't need to move into higher heat, but I'm grateful it did because even that was very well done. Thai BLs can often feel clumsy around intimacy, but not this one.
The final sex scene before Jom and Yai separate forever utilizes the ubiquitous director's-favorite-romantic-moments-flashbacks (required of all Asian romance dramas) but with acceleration and tension driven by the noises of sex, which I've never seen/heard done before. In other words: climax of sex = climax of the romance story, I see what you did there, Tee. Clever. Very clever. Bit on the nose… erm… on the… well you know what I mean.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bb4ac1f063a88ef76411a1ab624e71c1/4fd24cc8182d671e-1b/s540x810/dfdf9194f4222316ce7f6735b3a13a13b296e2d5.jpg)
Like all Thai BLs this wasn’t perfect, but for me this is as close as Thai BL gets to high quality romance and that’s what I want the most from my drama watching experience (if not necessarily my Thai BL experience).
But... and you knew the but was coming didn't you?
I absolutely hated the ending.
It wasn't sad, don't worry, but it also wasn't good.
There is a long drawn out separations sequence and then Jom returns to the present, drowning from a car accident. Jom is "rescued" by an moustachioed iteration of Yai from the distant past (who we met once before) and then wakes in hospital. Some time later, Jom returns to the house in Chang Mai where Yai turns up and they reunite.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/73a749b9df957cda8ef3ac3bcb277602/4fd24cc8182d671e-7e/s540x810/705975c53f887214b3d6cfc9f57ce8647859e621.jpg)
The end.
There is a stinger featuring Jom once more hurled back in time, only further, meeting the warrior mustache Yai once more.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/94410d4320fe164a6fae9db5ee3fde73/4fd24cc8182d671e-bf/s540x810/ab4b77f2b3dda7e5cf662e97e371b4f898f762b1.jpg)
Okay, that's all I knew and all I saw.
Confused? So was I.
If this had been a regular time travel romance: Yai would have been the EMT or doctor attending Jom when he woke up and their "this time period" romance would commence. With either shared memories, or not.
Had this been set up for audience comprehension in line with the original novel, we should have had flashbacks from both Present Yai (he's not the same one, as it turns out) and deep-past Moustache Yai interwoven throughout the series. Preferably with some focus on Present Yai's quest for reunion with Present Jom AND Present Yai's own experience with visions and memory of his past lives.
A full explanation of the ending is here. This explanation of the 3 different Yais makes me like our ending more. But I shouldn't need to read Cliff's notes from some random y-novel reading fan on Tumblr to understand what's going on in a series!
There is supposedly a special happening with Jom + Present Yai.
There was unquestionably a failure in adaptation in the finale of this show.
As a fan and watcher, what I actually felt was deeply confused and hurt.
I also felt that this was a disingenuous un-earned throw away happy ending, since I had no idea who this new Present Yai was and no investment in his character. I simply didn't believe he was the same Yai (Bright is too good an actor, he was clearly a different older personality).
So the fact remains that past Yai, our Yai, the 20 year old boy we grew to understand and love, is abandoned in the past to suffer alone for the rest of his life. And THAT is an unhappy ending for one half of my beloved pair. Yes Jom gets a new Yai in the present day, but it's not the same Yai. They have no developed relationship, and Jom is doomed to leave even this new Yai and slide into the past once more. That's barely even happy for now for Jom's character.
As a result of my deep sadness for 20-year-old Yai in particular, I'm not going to be able to rewatch this show. The whole thing was rendered not just confusing but the opposite of comforting by the final 15 minutes. I'm tempted to dock it two whole points - one for the ending and the other for the lack of rewatch potential.
But the first 11.5 eps were SO GOOD.
This is one of the only times where I am actually hoping for a second season, while simultaneously being wary of the screen writing and production team's capacity to give us a satisfying one.
Industry wise? I honestly don't think we can hope too hard for a full season 2. This was an expensive show with flawed/limited distribution and little sponsorship. I don't see how they'll get funding for a second season. Unless we see this show up on like Netflix or Viki, I urge you not to hope too hard and be disappointed.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/337220b6daf495583e50b68c5c204de3/4fd24cc8182d671e-6e/s540x810/f6bbe14aa60e43c6c7e967e9fd8ef845f8ce400b.jpg)
In all honestly?
I started typing up this blog post thinking Thailand was finally, after 5 years, going to earn another 10/10 from me but I just can't in good conscious give it that. It's been days and I'm still upset about that last episode.
And Now My Quick Pitch Review
I truly loved this time travel romance. IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework (much like Until We Meet Again). Steeped in history and family drama it edges into lakorn (but no as much as To Sir With Love and with way less scenery chewing). This is an elegant and classy BL... from Thailand which normally doesn't even try for classy. The main couple (both as a pair and individuals) were excellent, particularly Bright (Yai) whose eye-work acting style is a personal favorite of mine. Pity about the ending. Oh it wasn’t that sad but it wasn’t good either. This show should easily have earned a 10 from me except that it fumbled the… erm… balls. Argh. Whatever. 9/10

Remote Owner-Operated Business
Next Level Success for Innovative Entrepreneurs!
No, I’m not talking about working remotely. I’m talking about operating an owner-operated, possibly storefront business… remotely. Intrigued? Let’s talk!
There’s no question the world is changing.
Remote work is getting more popular, and earning money online is just a click away for those seeking freedom to work from anywhere!
But here’s something that might surprise you: Remote Operated Business.
This business model mean you don’t have to ditch the dream of a physical location or local business.
Nope, keep doing what you love!
I stumbled upon something truly innovative during a recent conversation with a client. She was running her U.S.-based janitorial business while living in Thailand!
Having owned a vacancy cleaning business myself year ago in LA, I know the challenges of managing such a business. Even taking a weekend vacation was a struggle, let alone running a local business from halfway across the globe! Bear in mind, that my janitorial business was pre-internet era (1988 - 1995). My how times have changed.
Intrigued by the concept, I dug deeper and realized this: Virtually any owner-operated business can be managed remotely. However, it requires a unique business model and a willingness to think differently.
If you’ve ever dreamed of living abroad, traveling the world, relocating to a different state while managing your local business operations, inheriting a business, or seizing a new opportunity, this could be your sign.
What is an Owner-Operated Business?
An owner-operated business is characterized by the owner’s direct involvement in day-to-day operations and decision-making. Unlike larger corporations with multiple management layers, these businesses thrive on the owner’s personal touch, whether it’s a cozy café, boutique shop, or freelance consultancy. Owners pour their passion into every aspect, creating a distinctive experience for customers and employees alike.
Managing vs The "Talent"
You're probably thinking, ‘Managing the business is one thing, but what if you ARE the talent’. Here’s a critical point to consider: As small or micro-business owners, freelancers, or sole proprietors, we are often the talent of the business. Whether you’re the accountant, baker, or masseuse, your role is vital as the primary talent.
You don’t have to be physically present to make this business model work. As any business grows, the role strategically must shift from being ‘the talent’ to becoming the owner-manager—a leader who trains and empowers a team to do what you do.
This shift is essential for growth, expansion, and scaling, or your business will never expand beyond your capacity. It is your unique skills and expertise that define the business, but to truly scale, you must focus on transferring that knowledge to others. This mindset and approach are the cornerstones of growing your business beyond its current limits.
Why Consider Operating Remotely?
There are several reason why this business model would be ideal:
There are those (of us) who travel full-time;
Not everyone wants to do the work. Maybe ready to retire.
Or maybe they were never skilled to do the work but thought it a good business to start.
It all comes down to you and designing your lifestyle. With the right approach, you can have the best of both worlds: a thriving business and the freedom, to travel and enjoy life.
Essentials for Running a Business Remotely
Think of it like a family-owned business. When trust is established, you don’t have to worry about high turnover or your team taking advantage of your absence. It’s all about structure, trust, and systems—and we’re diving into the key elements that make this possible.
Solid Infrastructure - Invest in cloud-based systems for scheduling, inventory management, and customer relationship management. Your tools are your backbone.
Scheduling: Google Calendar, Calendly, or Asana for managing tasks and appointments across your team.
Inventory Management: TradeGecko, Zoho Inventory, or your existing affiliate tool for seamless stock tracking and order processing.
Customer Relationship Management (CRM): HubSpot, Salesforce, or Zoho CRM to manage client interactions and sales pipelines effectively.
2. Trusted Team - Hire and train reliable employees who can handle day-to-day operations. Trust is non-negotiable; your team will carry your brand’s reputation in your absence. Explore more strategies for building and leading a trustworthy team in the Building a Team Blog.
3. Clear Processes and Procedures - Document every step of your operations in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Whether it’s baking recipes or cleaning protocols, ensure consistency without supervision. NOBOSS Workshops—III: Products and Services, Operations & Management dives into logistics, operating procedures, and policy development to set you up for success.
4. Remote Monitoring and Oversight - Use tools like security cameras, sales trackers, and inventory software to monitor operations in real-time. Stay informed without micromanaging.
Security Cameras: Ring, Arlo, or Nest cameras for real-time visual monitoring.
Sales Trackers: Square, Shopify, or Lightspeed for monitoring sales and transactions remotely.
Inventory Software: Pair your inventory tool with automated alerts for streamlined oversight.
5. Effective Communication Channels - Set up regular check-ins through video calls, messaging apps, or project management platforms. Communication keeps your team and vision aligned.
Video Calls: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet for structured meetings.
Messaging Apps: Slack or WhatsApp for quick and efficient communication.
Project Management: Trello, Monday.com, or ClickUp to track projects and assign tasks clearly.
6. Quality Control Measures - Implement customer feedback surveys to ensure continuous improvement.
Feedback Surveys: Google Forms, Typeform, or SurveyMonkey for easy survey creation and data collection.
Analytics Tools: Use platforms like Trustpilot or Yelp to monitor online reviews and gain insights into customer satisfaction.
7. Local Partnerships - Build relationships with local vendors, suppliers, and service providers. Having dependable local connections ensures smooth operations in your absence.
8. Contingency Plans - Prepare for the unexpected with backup staffing, alternative suppliers, and contingency funds. Remote management demands proactive solutions.
9. Legal and Regulatory Compliance - Stay compliant with local regulations by consulting legal experts or hiring counsel. This ensures peace of mind while operating from abroad.
10. Adaptability and Flexibility - Embrace change based on feedback, market trends, and opportunities. Remote operations require you to stay agile.
The Possibilities are Unlimited
Running an owner-operated business remotely is a viable opportunity for entrepreneurs willing to plan strategically and trust their systems and teams. With the right mindset, tools, and processes, you can achieve the freedom to live life on your terms while maintaining a successful enterprise.
One of the most significant benefits of this business model is overcoming traditional pitfalls—like when you’re on vacation or sick—your business doesn’t have to suffer. This has long been a common concern and a familiar fear for entrepreneurs. Now, with these safety nets in place, you can rest assured that your business remains resilient.
Now, what’s stopping you? If you’ve had this idea simmering in your mind, consider this your nudge to explore the possibilities. Because, yes, you can run that bakery, cleaning service, or boutique shop… even from a beach in Bali.

#PurpleCleaningPower for ARMY's 10th Birthday Anniversary!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY🥳#BTSARMY💜!! To celebrate our nameday, we will support Trash Hero World and together create a sustainable future by helping reduce plastic pollution and encourage long-term behavioral change.
Trash Hero is a global movement run by volunteers. Its aim is to unite communities to clean and reduce waste in the environment, create a sustainable future through projects that help reduce plastic pollution and encourage long-term behavioral change. Founded in Thailand in December 2013, it is now active in 139 locations worldwide.
“The Trash Hero Way“ Be the change: lead by example, showing not telling people what to do and being positive and respectful in thoughts, words and actions. Be credible: work independently, earn people’s trust and avoid conflicts of interest. Be selfless: work for the public benefit, not for personal gain. Stay humble and put mission before ego. Be responsible: act transparently and be accountable for decisions and actions. Think global, act local: understand the big picture and the solutions needed, but start the change where you live.
Weekly Cleanup Program: With the support of local businesses, people come together once a week to pick up rubbish. There is no cost nor need to sign-up for volunteers. Participating local businesses each week generously donate gloves and trash bags, food and beverages, and transportation when needed. All donations are given in kind, the chapters never take any money.
Bottles and Bags Program: Trash Hero provides high quality stainless steel water bottles to local businesses at cost price. Local businesses can then sell those bottles to customers with a small profit, and in return they agree to provide anyone with a Trash Hero water bottle, no matter where it was purchased, with free drinking water refills.
Trash Hero Kids Program: Trash Hero education is all about hands-on, experiential learning. Kids get points for joining cleanups in their neighborhoods (run by Trash Hero or others), for using alternatives to single use plastic bottles and bags, for refusing plastic straws, and for recycling and upcycling. The activities are done as a class or community group so there is plenty of motivation, as well as room for healthy competition among the children!

RECENT ECOMMERCE NEWS, RESOURCES AND STUDIES, EARLY JULY 2023
As expected when I posted the recent Etsy and SEO news update in June, I didn't get much time during my road trip to work on the other portion. So here it is, covering ecommerce sites, social media, content marketing and lots of other things small and microbusinesses might need to know.
I've also updated my Tumblr theme to make it easier to read and more accessible overall. Please let me know what you think!
Finally, the next update will be out in a few weeks, and will contain everything together in one post again. If you don't want to wait for it, follow me on Twitter or on LinkedIn for more timely news.
SOCIAL MEDIA - All Aspects, By Site
Facebook (includes relevant general news from Meta)
You can now pay for a verified Meta account, and unlike Twitter, they actually verify your ID.
Speaking of Twitter, Meta’s copycat app Threads took off rapidly, hitting over 100 million signups in the first week.
If you have a Facebook or Instagram Shop, note that many countries will need to use Meta’s checkout as of April 24 2023. While the US is one of those countries, the following places will not have to change anything at this moment: “Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, U.K. and Ukraine”.
Wonder how Facebook ranks posts these days? Search Engine Land covered the topic for you.
Meta is pulling all news content in Canada after a new law passed that makes platforms pay media sources for their content. Google followed.
LinkedIn
LinkedIn recently changed its algorithm, and is giving more weight to people you follow, and to “knowledge and advice”.
Make sure you are using LinkedIn content analytics to see how your posts are performing. The company released some tips on how to get more views and interaction on your ads and posts.
Pinterest
Pinterest is introducing Amazon ads that lead directly to Amazon so browsers can buy there. This is expected to take a few years to fully roll out.
The Shuffles feature is particularly popular with Generation Z women.
Reddit
Yes, you can use Reddit to promote your business, but it is tricky. “It’s perfectly fine to be a Redditor with a website; it’s not okay to be a website with a Reddit account.”
TikTok
TikTok is selling its own products through the app, called “Trendy Beat", although this is only happening in the UK so far. The items seemed to be based on trending videos.
TIkTok is the latest to test searching by image, in its Shop feature.
Twitter
The Twitter algorithm now promotes Elon Musk’s tweets above all others. Yes, really.
YouTube
YouTube ended Stories on June 26, but plans on doing more with Shorts in the future.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS (minus social media)
General
Handmade alternative marketplace Artisans Cooperative has settled on its organisational structure now that they are moving forward with incorporating the co-op, and enrolling new members. Check their blog for all announcements on their plans.
A new California initiative involves both ecommerce and brick and mortar businesses to help track down stolen items. Each site agrees to “assign staff and tools—dedicate webpage, online portal, or point of contact—to address concerns of theft that come in from retails or law enforcement, and to monitor listings “to affirmatively prevent and detect” organized crime.”
50% of online shopping trips start at Amazon, amazingly enough. Google comes in second. After peaking last year, TikTok’s share of product searches has dropped.
Many merchants are reconsidering their return policies, and even free shipping.
Amazon
Some Amazon sellers had huge issues with verifying their information to comply with the INFORM Act. The deadline for completing verification was July 7, after which Amazon will place a hold on all payments.
Amazon will now charge US buyers for returns to UPS stores.
Many backpacks made for adults were removed from Amazon automatically, and sellers were told they needed to show proof the packs had met children’s safety standards.
BigCommerce
BigCommerce has followed Shopify in raising fees for the same amount, although existing users didn’t see the increase until June 1. As with Shopify, site owners can keep their current rate by opting for the annual package.
eBay
If you are worried about eBay showing your home address to prospective buyers (due to the INFORM Act), you can apply for an exception.
Ebay international shipping is available to US-based stores now, but there are a lot of complaints. Other recent eBay announcements and plans are discussed here in coverage of the summer Seller Update.
Sales on eBay continue to drop, as do buyers. Here’s coverage of the 4th quarter report written for sellers, and the 1st quarter 2023.
eBay is now offering Canadian collectible sellers a new “Expedited Lite” Canada Post rate that costs as little as $5.85 to send 200 grams from Toronto to Yellowknife. Tracking and $100 insurance are included. [Attention other platforms - Canadians need these cheap rates!]
Poshmark
Poshmark now operates in the United Kingdom.
Poshmark joined the vast majority of large ecommerce sites in the past year by laying off employees, although the reported numbers were just 2% of the workforce.
Shopify
After making big moves to enter the fulfillment market, Shopify sold off the logistics network to Flexport, which it will continue to work with, as well as owning 13% of Flexport’s stock.
Shopify is resisting a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) request for 6 years of tax records for 121,000 stores. Note that the CRA must get a judge to approve such a request, which they filed for in April 2023.
Shopify managed to beat the market estimates for the 4th quarter 2022, but predicts growth will continue to slow
There are ways to make your Shopify site more accessible for various disabilities; for some larger merchants, this is a legal requirement.
All Other Marketplaces
Bonanza is trying to improve its shipping label options, with the first step being decreasing the cost of USPS labels. It also now has a synced eBay importer, and is expanding its loan program to more sellers.
Michael's has finally opened its maker supply online marketplace to third-party sellers. While this initial group of merchants was invited, the company is now accepting applications from experienced ecommerce merchants. Fees are a flat 15% commission, so no monthly subscriptions, listing fees or even payment processing fees (apparently). There is also a Shipstation integration. This could be a good channel for high-volume supply sellers who make/design their own products, especially if they work in a niche Michael’s doesn’t already service. Note that their makers website that would compete directly with Etsy is now taking a waitlist.
Kohl’s opened a third-party marketplace, which includes their loyalty program benefits for buyers.
All Other Website Builders
Squarespace bought Google Domains, but Google is still a domain registrar, and this should not affect your Google rankings.
Payment Processing
Apple is very late to the buy-now-pay-later game, introducing Apple Pay Later for some users.
Shipping
There is a UPS strike looming; the union contract expires August 1. This could not only affect businesses who ship products via UPS, but also those of us who order supplies etc.
Also note that the port workers in British Columbia are on strike as of July 1. “Analysts have said a strike could have a significant impact on worldwide shipping and the Canadian economy. According to the Maritime Employers Association's website, its members contribute $2.7 billion to the national GDP and handled roughly 16 per cent of Canada's total traded goods worth $180 billion in 2020.”
Chinese ecommerce businesses could lose their US tariff exemption, which allows companies in China to ship to the US cheaply. The bill is not yet law.
USPS raised stamp prices and combined several services into the new USPS Ground Advantage plan, as of July 9.
(CONTENT) MARKETING (includes blogging, emails, and strategies)
Is your small business making some common content marketing mistakes? 5 frequent errors and their solutions.
Email welcome pages are a good way to increase sales from your list. “Imagine a shopper subscribes and is sent immediately to a page that, first, shares the discount code and, second, includes a short (30-second) welcome video that explains how to apply the code — without having to check email.”
ONLINE ADVERTISING (NOT SOCIAL MEDIA OR ECOMMERCE SITES)
Advertising through “retail media” (such as Amazon) will probably be greater than television ad revenue by 2028. “Retailers from Amazon, Walmart and Target to grocers such as Carrefour, Ahold Delhaize, Tesco and Sainsbury's are working aggressively to attract big advertisers to their websites” which could constitute more than 15% of all advertising spend by 2028.
Google’s Merchant Center will be getting easier to use next year, with the introduction of Merchant Center Next. Looks like complicated product feeds will be a thing of the past.
Google Ads users are encouraged to import the conversion info from Google Analytics 4, to potentially improve ad performance.
STATS, DATA, TRACKING
Many sites are incorrectly reporting visits as direct when they actually come from sources such as social media; here’s a study showing how that can break down.
Google’s latest instructions for migrating from Google’s Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4 even includes videos. If you don’t like Google’s explanation, here is another good tutorial [video and transcript] And here is a detailed outline of how to track organic search traffic in GA4, and how to set up site search. Don’t worry if you haven’t migrated your account yet - although it will not collect new data starting some time after July 1, 2023, Google will transition the account to GA4 for you, and will also let you download your old Universal Analytics data for the next year. If you didn’t update to GA4 yourself, you are in the majority of website owners.
Once you do start with GA4, make sure to connect with the Search Console and activate reports. There are also some reports you cannot get with GA4, but this article explains what you can come close to replicating from the old version.
You can now move all of your Google Search Console data into Google’s BigQuery, which is great for really large sites. If you struggle to digest the info provided by Google Search Console, then you might be interested in a few integrations to make things easier. Some are even free!
BUSINESS & CONSUMER TRENDS, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
How to answer common buyer questions to make purchasing easier (and more likely!)
Generation Z (born from 1997 to 2012) uses social media differently than other age groups, and that affects how you can market to them. Check out the different values and behaviours they have as a group.
Many sole proprietorships struggle with how to deal with demanding customers. Maybe you should fire them instead? [Twitter thread] Example: “Bad Clients are “un-leveragable”. You cannot
Learn from them
Use them as references
Earn a good margin to fuel your biz
Factor the intangibles when calculating your ROI. Not everything that counts can be counted.”
Consumers are always changing how they shop and buy; here’s some data from the end of last year, explaining that buying through social media is slowly growing, among other points. Also, “42% of consumers have chosen a product based on it being made by a small business in the last three months, up 8% from May 2022.” Hubspot also released more data on the social media angle of the research, giving reasons why some buyers are still hesitant.
US ecommerce sales were up 3% in the first 3 months of 2023. The total was $272.6 billion.

Malaysia should capitalise on the growth opportunities presented by BRICS while addressing the challenges ahead to enhance its competitiveness on the global stage, say industrialists.
Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) national president Datuk William Ng foresees a significant increase in trade missions, coupled with enhanced diplomatic and economic representation, following the country’s admission as a partner nation of BRICS.
He believes this will lead to greater overall trade and investment opportunities within the international bloc.
“Our inclusion as a partner country is an important first step in that direction. It offers Malaysian businesses greater opportunities in member countries that go beyond free trade agreements.
“It will also reinforce Malaysia’s standing as a non-aligned economy in an increasingly polarised world,” he said.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India and China, was established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for emerging economies, with South Africa joining in 2010.
The grouping has since expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
This year, Malaysia has been one of 13 nations officially added as a partner country to the bloc that collectively accounts for one-fifth of the global trade. The other 12 are Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Turkiye, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
However, none of these countries have achieved full membership yet.
Looking ahead, Ng called for efforts to reduce non-tariff barriers among BRICS member and partner economies to encourage a smoother flow of people and goods.
“One low-hanging fruit to achieve is to negotiate visa-free movement across the bloc, if not for all travellers, then at least for business purposes.

Japan Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) Market Analysis 2032
Japan banking-as-a-service (BaaS) market is projected to witness a CAGR of 16.71% during the forecast period FY2025-FY2032, growing from USD 285.68 million in FY2024 to USD 983.43 million in FY2032. Factors such as proactive attempts by banks to improve digital capabilities and streamline service offerings drive the increasing adoption of BaaS platforms. Supportive stance taken by the government of Japan has been important in this regard, favorable regulatory policies encourage the creation and integration of advanced financial technologies. This regulatory environment encourages innovation and ensures that financial services are competitive, servicing the consumers’ needs.
Banking-as-a-Service is the ability for businesses to inject banking functions, like the facilitation of payments and account management, into their service offering enabled by third-party technology platforms. It connects via APIs with banking systems to provide financial products without managing the underlying infrastructure. In 2023, Fujitsu decided to absorb and merge Fujitsu Cloud Technologies Limited, which specializes in public cloud services, in the form of an absorption-type merger. This will expedite the introduction of advanced technologies for cloud services that provide transparency, security, and reliability.
The other significant reason for the market’s growth in Japan is the rising interest rate for consumers, helping them reach further and diversify service portfolios that make strategic sense for small finance companies. In this way, using a BaaS platform offers the opportunity to expand banking services for regions where traditional banking structures are not as prevalent. By tapping BaaS for power, the companies can offer more inclusive and contextual financial solutions that narrow the gap between urban and rural financial services, ultimately serving the cause of growth in this market. These are driven by regulatory support, technological advancement, and strategic adoption by FIs, driving the growth of the BaaS market in Japan.
Growing Adoption of Open Banking to Drive Market Growth
An increase in the traction for open banking adoption in Japan is one of the factors driving the growth of the BaaS market. Open banking allows banks and third-party providers to share data more transparently and be more connected using APIs, thus allowing financial services to integrate seamlessly into a wide variety of applications. This will, in turn, provide more interoperability for companies to offer more customer-centric banking products and services without the need to create convoluted banking systems. Therefore, enhanced diversity and accessibility of financial services have repercussions in the form of BaaS demand growth. Further, this is fueled by the supportive regulatory environment in Japan, which looks forward to innovation and ensures that data sharing is secure and efficient.
The trends in the performance of the BaaS market in Japan have been remarkable as established financial institutions and new entrants are adopting open banking to boost sophisticated financial services and widen their market reach. In 2023, Vector Consulting Group, one of the leading domestic management consulting firms, entered a capital and business alliance with TIS Inc., one of Japan’s top technology companies. In the process, TIS Inc. has agreed to buy a 20 percent stake in Vector. The move underlines a strategic partnership to support expansion into emerging markets such as Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand.
Surge in BaaS Adoption to Accelerate the Market Growth
The increased adoption of BaaS platforms is significantly driving Japan BaaS market. The integration of BaaS reduces or eliminates the need for businesses to build, maintain, and operate complex banking infrastructures, therefore reducing costs and speeding up the delivery of services. With the increasing demand for digital financial solutions, companies are taking advantage of BaaS to extend their offerings and create superior customer experiences. The flexibility and scalability of BaaS platforms make it easier for businesses to rapidly deploy innovative financial products and services. In Japan, favorable regulatory measures and an emphasis on open banking by the government further amplify the appeal of BaaS, creating an enabling environment for market expansion.
In 2023, NEC Corporation acquired a 50.1 percent stake in Japan Asset Management Inc. Following this acquisition, Japan Asset Management will become a consolidated subsidiary of the NEC Group. The integration will connect expertise from asset management advice given by JAM with state-of-the-art technologies, including AI from NEC, to enhance customer experiences further and bring more value into the realm of asset management and financial education.
Banks Segment to Dominate the Japan Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) Market Share
In the Japanese BaaS market, banks are expected to lead the end-user segment, owing to developed infrastructure, know-how in handling regulatory issues, and the fact that banks enjoy the customer’s trust. Banks have strong advantages in adopting the BaaS platform, as they can easily utilize their existing networks and know-how of finance to offer advanced integrated banking services. With robust infrastructure and acquaintance with stringent regulations, banks are in a better position to provide comprehensive and secure financial solutions using BaaS.
In addition, banks are equally well-placed to provide services that range from payments and account management to lending, deeply integrated with the BaaS offerings. Thus, as adoption increases, banks will be set to steer the market share and, consequently, standards and innovation in the sector. This will be driven and supported by its capability of providing reliable, scalable, and compliant financial services for individuals and business customers. In July 2024, Finastra Global PAYplus Japanese, a game-changing payment hub solution, enabled banks to address all dimensions of the payment transformation challenge. With an unrivaled breadth of payment services, ranging from high-value payments to mass payments and real-time payments, everything is integrated into one complete solution.

Central Region Dominates Japan Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) Market Share
The Central region, including Tokyo and its surroundings, is expected to lead the Japan banking-as-a-service (BaaS) market. The region hosts the central economic and financial hub of the country, representing a high concentration of major banks, financial institutions, and technology enterprises. Tokyo has the reputation of being one of the world’s largest financial centers due to its modern infrastructure and well-developed financial base. Therefore, large investments in Fintech, added to a progressive regulatory environment by the city, form an ideal background against which BaaS platforms are adopting and expanding at an incredible speed.
Indeed, the Kanto region, with its wide network of financial services, innovative technology, and permissive policies, is a significant region for BaaS to grow and take the lead in driving the market’s growth. The region continues to strengthen its dominance as it attracts and develops new, pioneering financial technologies and services to spearhead the evolution of Japanese banking.
In 2024, NTT DATA executed a capital tie-up with ALLOYED LIMITED to strengthen the technological capability of NTT DATA XAM Technologies. This will help develop solutions to the customers’ challenge of designing and manufacturing highly technological components and support business development on a greater scale.
Future Market Scenario (FY2025 – FY2032F)
1. As BaaS becomes established in central urban areas, such as Tokyo, it will gradually expand to unserved and rural areas, further enhancing financial inclusion within the country.
2. The Japanese government is expected to continue promoting open banking and digital financial innovations by creating a regulatory framework which encourages the adoption of BaaS while ensuring security and compliance.
3. Most BaaS platforms will be integrated with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and IoT, extending features to encompass personalized financial advice and enhancing transactional security.

How long does it take to change a person's destiny?
Sometimes, a moment is enough.
At least, that's how it was for Frank Lucas.
Frank Lucas was born in a small town in the southern United States in 1930. According to the normal trajectory, he should have gone to school in a black school like most black Americans, and if he did well in school, he would go to college. If he did not study well, he would find a manual job or join the army . In short, that would be his life.
However, everything changed when he was 6 years old.
That year, Lucas's cousin ran for mayor. He was not in an advantageous position at first, but unexpectedly he was elected.
For 6-year-old Lucas, this was a huge happy event. There was nothing more impressive than shouting in front of other children, "My brother is the mayor."
However, at that time, the United States had not yet experienced the "I Have a Dream" movement, racial discrimination was very serious, and the KKK was rampant. When Lucas' family was celebrating his cousin's success in the exam, a group of KKK members broke in, poured gasoline on his body in front of the whole family, and then set him on fire, burning him to death.
Afterwards, no one was held accountable and no one was punished.
This incident had a huge impact on little Lucas. He was originally a kind and honest child, but he turned into an avenger full of hatred and violence towards white people.
In the next ten years, Lucas Jr. either burned white people's mailboxes, stabbed white people's cars, and even set fire to police cars, so by the time he was 16, he had already become a well-known villain.
He was then spotted by Ellsworth Raymond Johnson, a gangster who also hated white people.
Johnson is no ordinary person. He was the ruler of New York's underworld from the 1930s to the 1960s. The American TV series "Godfather of Harlem" tells his story.
With Johnson's support, Lucas worked his way up from a driver to a middle-level manager.
However, unlike other middle-level executives who run underground casinos, collect protection fees, and hire killers, Lucas's business scope is drugs.
Lucas came at a good time. The entire 1960s was a period of explosive growth for the American drug market.
At that time, the United States had just intervened in the Vietnam War. For the benefit of capitalists, young Americans died one after another in the quagmire of Vietnam. The government wanted to expand conscription, but college students were not as easy to fool as high school students. Anti-war movements broke out in various universities.
But what? This anti-war movement is different from the march with placards as we know it. Instead, a large group of people went to an open space, listened to a concert, drank beer, and shouted "Make Love, Not War". Then, if men and women fell in love with each other, they went into tents and had a wild time. There was no sign of anti-war at all.
To put it bluntly, these young people are just squandering their hormones under the banner of anti-war.
Lucas keenly noticed this track and thought about expanding the market and becoming the drug king of New York.
But the question is, where do the drugs come from?
At that time, neither the Golden Crescent in the Middle East and West Asia nor the Silver Triangle in South America had yet developed. The largest source of drugs at the time was actually the Golden Triangle located at the junction of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.
Coincidentally, the Golden Triangle is very close to where the United States fought the Vietnam War.
After Lucas personally visited suppliers, the Golden Triangle became a new source of drugs for the New York drug market.
Now that we have the source of goods, how do we transport them back? Along the way, there are customs, anti-smuggling, and coast guards. Should we transport them directly? There is no guarantee that the goods will not be inspected. Should we bribe them? There are too many gods and the cost is too high.
Then, the quick-witted Lucas came up with a brilliant idea: buy drugs from the Golden Triangle, transport them to South Vietnam through the channels of Laos (there was a US military base in Laos at the time), then make a hole in the bodies of the dead American soldiers, stuff the drugs in, and use the bodies of the dead soldiers as a tool for drug transportation, and return home directly on a US military transport plane without going through any customs inspection!
To be honest, American drug enforcement police would never think of such an idea. Even if they did, would you dare to risk desecrating the honor of soldiers by dissecting and examining the bodies one by one?
It was with this "genius" idea that Lucas became the biggest drug dealer in New York. After Johnson's death, he naturally became the new godfather. The movie "American Gangster" was based on Lucas.
However, there was a bug in Lucas' plan, which was that it required the cooperation of military personnel, otherwise the job could not be done.
The person Lucas bribed in the US military was called Melvin Combs. Although he was only a major in the Air Force, he was in charge of the entire transportation of the bodies.
The two of them worked closely together to make the company bigger and stronger and create greater glory.
But unfortunately, this business cannot be done for a long time because soldiers will retire.
In 1971, Melvin Combs retired and his value was greatly reduced, but Lucas still took into account their old friendship and handed over the drug business in a district in New York to him.
Melvin Combs, who was a military man, obviously had no talent for drug trafficking. His business was shut down by the police not long after it started, and Melvin Combs was arrested.
But not long after, the police inexplicably released Melvin Combs!
This aroused Lucas's suspicion. Could it be that you are a cop's accomplice?
In order to prevent his secret from being discovered by the police, Lucas arranged for his men to shoot and kill Melvin Combs in his car on Central Park West.
You see, this is how gangsters are, they only care about interests, not loyalty. Even though they worship Guan Gong, if something really happens, they will even betray Guan Gong.
However, what Lucas did not expect was that his shot changed not only the fate of one person, but the fate of the entire country.
Melvin Combs died, leaving behind a 3-year-old child, Sean Combs, yes, he was later known as "Puff Daddy".
The 3-year-old child has no memory of his father, and his mother, Janice Combs, has always told him that his father died in a car accident.
However, little Sean always felt that something was wrong.
Why does my mother always avoid talking about my father's occupation? Why does my family always have endless money even though they don't work much? Why do the police come to my house from time to time to question me?
All this was not known until Sean went to middle school. One day, he was doing research in the library and saw the newspaper from that year. He learned that his father had died of a gunshot wound and that his father's job was not glorious either. He was a drug dealer.
At that moment, my father’s glorious image completely collapsed.
From then on, Sean began to feel inferior, and the other side of inferiority complex was his urgent desire for recognition.
Just like Koreans nowadays want to grab everything, want to be the first in everything, and want to be in the spotlight in everything. In fact, it is all to cover up their inner inferiority. It is a complex psychology.
Sean's growth path is full of this kind of limelight that comes from inferiority complex.
In junior high school, for example, he posed as a child model for Essence magazine, and in high school he danced as a backup dancer in several videos for Diana Ross and the band Pretty Young Cannibals.
The most typical example is that after his family moved, he envied the swimming pool of the white family across the street. He wanted to go swimming, but was rejected by the white children.
Sean, whose self-esteem was hurt, asked his mother to build a swimming pool at home. Then his mother not only built it, but also built the largest swimming pool in the entire neighborhood.
As a result, all the children had to ask Sean for permission before they could come in to swim, and Sean became very proud of himself from then on.
Sean's hot-tempered personality earned him the nickname, "Puffy."
This style of being in the limelight continued until Sean went to Howard University. In the eyes of his college classmates, although Sean was a black man, he always had a tenacity that made you accept him. This also allowed Sean to successfully open up the situation in this predominantly white university and become a celebrity in the social circle.
Perhaps in order to exercise his organizational skills or to meet more people at parties, Sean often participated in organizing luxurious parties in college, some of which had up to a thousand people.
You know what, at the party, Sean actually met the person who changed his destiny - Andre Harrell.
Andre Harrell is the founder of Uptown Records. He felt that this black guy had great potential, so he gave him an intern job.
For a "qigugu" who is eager for exposure, what could be better than entering the entertainment industry to gain higher exposure?
When Sean heard this, he immediately dropped out of school and joined Uptown Records.
Maybe everyone has their own suitable field. After Sean joined Uptown Records, he felt at home like a duck in water. In just a few months, he climbed to the position of A&R executive and served as creative director.
During this period, he helped discover artists such as Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, and rapper Christopher Wallace, demonstrating his potential as a music producer.
In 1992, Sean and Harrell had a falling out. Sean, unwilling to be bullied, left Uptown with Christopher Wallace and went solo to establish Bad Boy Records.
In 1994, Christopher Wallace released his first studio album, Ready To Die, which received widespread acclaim and quickly sold millions of copies. With the success of Christopher Wallace, Sean began to expand the Bad Boy Records lineup, signing artists such as Faith Evans, Mase, and Total and creating music for them.
At this point, Sean became a well-known ace music producer in the circle.
Of course, this is far from enough. He is not satisfied with staying behind the scenes and wants to step to the front!
In 1996, Sean released his first hip-hop single "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" under the name "Puff Daddy", which eventually won the Billboard Hot 100. On July 22, 1997, he released his first studio album "No Way Out", which immediately won the Billboard 200 album chart with first-week sales of 561,000 copies, and its subsequent cumulative sales exceeded 7 million copies!
At the 40th Grammy Awards on February 25, 1998, Sean won the "Best Rap Duo/Group" award for "I'll Be Missing You" and the "Best Rap Album" award for "No Way Out". He subsequently won two consecutive Grammy Awards, was selected as one of the 100 Most Influential People by Time in 2006, and was inscribed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008.
Sean became completely famous, and his nickname "Puff Daddy" became famous all over the world, and people often called him Diddy affectionately.
If we must make an analogy for his status in China, you can think of him as a combination of The Voice mentors. In the music circle, he is definitely someone who can shake the world with just one stomp of his feet.
However, no one realized that behind Diddy's music empire was a terrifying dark empire.
As mentioned earlier, Diddy was keen on hosting parties when he was in college, and it was because of the connections he made at the parties that Diddy achieved his later success.
After becoming the godfather of music, Diddy had more resources, the parties he held became bigger and bigger, and the content became more and more exciting.
Here, in order to make it easier for everyone to understand, we need to explain the differences between American parties and Chinese parties.
Chinese-style parties are usually organized around family or close friends. People usually come at mealtimes and cannot come empty-handed. Some guests may even help in the kitchen.
The theme of a Chinese party is to eat and everyone will comment on the food, tell some jokes, and drink some wine (usually without getting drunk). After eating and drinking, people start to act according to their interests. Some people play mahjong, some play games, and some chat about gossip. Some young people also play script-killing games and truth or dare at parties.
Everyone can understand these scenes, but American-style parties are completely beyond the imagination of Chinese people.
There are actually many American parties, such as birthday parties, Christmas parties, surprise parties, pajama parties, masquerade parties, etc., but the most popular, most participated and largest-scale party in the social circle is still impart.
Impart is a Chinese made-up word, which means: porn party.
The themes of the party were sex and drugs.
For example, someone once translated and uploaded an old version of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" on YouTube. In the episode where Cao Cao sang "Short Song", because it was considered a banquet, it was translated faithfully and elegantly into "Cao Cao's Big Party".
Americans clicked in excitedly after seeing the title, but were disappointed after reading it, and they cursed below:
Big party? Where's the drugs and chicks?
You see, this is the cultural difference.
A friend of mine (a real friend!) once told me about this scene at a party he attended:
Accompanied by deafening music, a group of people drink and jump around, and when the atmosphere is right, they start smoking leaves or taking ecstasy, and then all kinds of monsters and demons come out.
For example, find a girl you like and bring her to a room to discuss the meaning of life. Sometimes you don’t even need a room and can just do it in a corner.
My friend said that this scene shattered his worldview and he ran away after staying there for more than half an hour.
Emily Zhang, a Chinese-American reporter for Bloomberg, once revealed the tip of the iceberg of such parties in her book "Extreme Male Power":
The event usually starts with a simple dinner. After people have had enough wine and food, the waiter brings the "main character" - drugs. "This makes a group of strangers who were a little shy just now become as close as lovers." After they realize this, they will hold their "partners" hands and go upstairs to the room to make love. After dawn, the organizers provide them with breakfast, followed by another round of drugs and alcohol, and repeat this script over and over again.
To be honest, this kind of scene, which is like in the animal world, subverts the three views of the Chinese people.
If you are interested, you can ask your friends who have returned from studying abroad but have not done well in academic performance and love to play about the party. It is guaranteed to satisfy your craving for fun.
Now you know why Asians can’t get along, right? Because the education that most Chinese people (whether they are ABCs or those who came later) received since childhood cannot accept such a scene of chaos.
But in the eyes of Americans, when "have fun" and "be cool" become a circle culture, if you don't join in, you deserve to be isolated and discriminated against, and you will have no chance to develop.
On the contrary, only by actively entering such a circle and proving that you are a member of the "circle" can you be recognized. This is very important in the environment of the United States, where "elite culture" is very strong (now you know why some famous American schools have small circles such as "fraternities" and "Skull and Bones Society"?).
Therefore, once you receive an invitation to Diddy's "Freak Offs" party, it means entering the elite circle that Diddy has created, and everyone will be proud of it.
Of course, the invited people are also divided into levels. Some are VIPs, and some are just in the atmosphere group. VIPs can vent their desires in the atmosphere group at will, no matter how exaggerated and unbearable, even beating, abuse and other behaviors are allowed.
For Diddy, what he needs to do is to maintain the "high quality" and "coolness" of the party.
So he would make a series of careful arrangements. He would book the most luxurious hotel suite or pool villa in the area, set up the lighting and sound system, prepare alcohol and ecstasy (some ecstasy were customized in the shape of Diddy's company logo), and prepare doctors to give them intravenous drips to restore their strength when their guests were exhausted.
Of course, these service staff all received generous hush money to ensure that the guests could freely reveal the ugly side of their human nature.
So the question is, in order to satisfy the various perverted desires of the guests, how many girls are willing to be treated as playthings, violated, beaten, and abused?
Except for a few sex workers, most of the others were toys found by Diddy.
For example, for some boys and girls (including minors) who dream of becoming stars, Diddy will use the resources in the circle as temptation and deceive them that he will help them become famous, but they must accept the "circle test."
For example, some socialites, who are actually American "gold diggers", are always thinking about getting to know the powerful and wealthy, so once they receive an invitation, they will immediately dress up and go to such a party to "take a chance".
But by the time they arrived at the party and discovered the strange ways in which the powerful played games, it was too late.
Under the pretext of "helping to develop careers", Diddy has recruited a large number of young men and women who dream of becoming stars. Even if these people are humiliated at parties, they often remain silent for the sake of their own careers.
Therefore, Diddy's dark empire was not exposed until 2023 when his ex-girlfriend Cathy Windra turned against him.
