LIME TREE HOUSE SHORTLISTED FOR THE BUILD IT AWARDS 2020
Rayner Davies Architects have been shortlisted in the Build It Awards this year. They were nominated as Best Architect or Designer for a Self-Build Project, for their work on Lime Tree House in West Bridgford Nottingham.
The Build It Awards, in association with BuildStore, are the most sought-after accolade within the self-build industry. They recognise excellence across the board in self-build products, services, suppliers and projects.
Lime Tree House hinges around an open structural corner that seamlessly connects the principle kitchen, dining and living spaces to a raised, south-facing courtyard. Framed by two lime trees, the entrance to the building steps up from ground level to provide resilience against localised flood risks resulting from the site’s proximity to the River Trent. The client’s brief informed a ground floor layout that is structured around contemporary family life; offering generous spaces that flow together for entertaining guests alongside smaller, private spaces such as the adult-oriented snug or children’s play-spaces. Windows to the first-floor bedrooms are surrounded by projecting timber reveals that contrast with the stark graphite cladding panels, designed as a contemporary sash to enable the window to slide downwards, forming a balcony-like balustrade onto the garden.
The inward-looking courtyard arrangement mitigates against planning constraints in relation to privacy/overlooking whilst opening up longer views towards the South. Although the local authority supported a contemporary aesthetic, a contrast was developed between the treatment of the inside façade overlooking the courtyard and the outward facing spine of the building. This was devised to provide a more typical brick face to the neighbouring gardens.Rayner Davies Architects have been shortlisted in the Build It Awards this year. How to Choose the Right Window for your House?
Gone are those days when the homeowners had limited interest in windows as to whether they need to find a suitable covering for the glass. But today, everyone has become energy conscious and want to reduce the expense of heating or cooling their house.
However, these days, window technology has developed considerably and the new set of windows can surely make your house more energy efficient!
Windows take a lot and have to withstand heavy rains, strong winds, freezing snow, etc. Over years weather can take its toll on windows, but a draft here and there should not necessitate an entire window replacement.
So, whether you’re building a new house or simply replacing the current windows, the key is to know which choice can give you the bang for your buck without delivering to the bottom line.
If your windows are damaged then professionals such as Double Glazing Repairs Nottingham can assist you in repairing them. However, if the window is damaged beyond repair, you’ll have to consider replacing it. Damaged windows can lead to bigger problems, such as water gaining access to wall cavities or the foundation.
Whilst purchasing a window the first step is to determine your needs and requirements, design, the function and budget. Window purchases are a huge commitment, which simply means it is an expensive mistake to order the wrong type.
Here’s how you should be making the right choice of windows for your house:
· Choosing the Window Material
Windows are available in various materials, such as wood, vinyl, fibreglass and aluminium. Wooden window frames are a common choice and can be bought to match the existing window. Wooden window sashes are easy to replace, but they require more care. Yet, they offer you a classic look! Thus, for an older home in order to retain the original style wooden windows are the only option.
Clad-framed windows feature an aluminium shell and are frequently used in new construction. These are attached with nailing flanges which fit underneath the siding material.
Vinyl clad windows are available in various colours and they do not require as much care as the wooden windows. They won’t give your house a stunning look as wood windows, but they are an ease on the pocket and insulate as well. Also fibreglass windows are stronger the vinyl but a bit expensive.
· Choosing the Window Glass
Recent advancements in technology have greatly expanded the options available in window glass. Apart from choosing the glass you can even determine on the distance between each pane. Window glasses are available in single, double, triple and even quadruple pane. However, single-pane glass is considered to be the most outdated one because it is appropriate only during very mild climates and in outbuildings.
Double-pane windows come with sealed air space between the layers of glass in order to decrease the heat loss. These are available in numerous variations along with enhanced insulating ability and contain an inert gas such as argon for additional insulation.
If you live in a place that witnesses extreme cold climates, then you should consider triple-pane window. These are sealed with a mix of gases including argon to provide insulation. Triple-pane can save up to 2-3% of your heating expenses, but they could cost 10-15% more.
· Choosing the Window Style
Selecting a window style is always a personal preference, but even design is to be taken into consideration based on what exists in your house and how you’d want the windows to look from the inside.
Here are some types for you to consider:
o Casement Window
This type of window pivots on hinges that are located on the side of the window frame that is they open like doors. These are usually taller instead of being wider, thereby provide top to bottom ventilation. Casement windows also offer unobstructed view along with a more stylish and modern look.
o Double-Hung Window
A double-hung window slides up and down, as well as offers a conventional look. But, modern day double-hung windows come with spring mounted mechanism rather than the old weight and pulley style.
o Sliding Window
These windows can be an ease on your pocket as they require less maintenance. However, they do not offer much ventilation because only half of the window can be opened.
Apart from these, you should ensure that you check the quality and warranty of the selected window. This way, your window will provide you with energy savings, ease of use and low maintenance.
