School Leavers Employment Supports
The SLES Canberra program provides a bundle of support services to assist school leavers with disability with achieving sustainable employment in open employment. It is based on the proven ‘place then train’ model and is funded by the NDIS.
If you are eligible, your NDIS planner will consider whether SLES is a reasonable and necessary support for your circumstances. If approved, it will be included in your plan.
Individualised support
School Leaver Employment Supports is an NDIS funding item that is designed to help people in their final year of school or who have recently left school to prepare for their future. Individualised supports are available for participants based on their needs, goals and circumstances.
The program provides a pathway for young people to develop their employment and training goals, while developing skills to work, socialise and live independently. The program is delivered by a range of providers who tailor support to meet your specific needs and can include job search, job site training, travel training and activities that grow your communication, social and overall confidence.
Depending on the assessment, participants who have SLES will be referred to DES or a similar disability employment service once they are ready to start paid work. For example, Breakthru SLES participants build hospitality skills by working at a local cafe or they might go on work experience with Riverian Cheese to learn about food production.
Training
School leavers can get help to develop job skills and prepare for employment through the NDIS’s School Leavers Employment Support (SLES) program. The SLES program provides young people with disability and barriers with a pathway to employment through work experience and training. It is available to NDIS participants who are aged up to 22 and can be added to their plan through the Local Area Coordinator or Support Coordinator.
SLES works with you at your own pace to build your ability and confidence to start a job. Work experience
School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) is a tailored program that assists young people to prepare for their first job. SLES is funded through the NDIS and offers personalised one-on-one mentoring, skills development and work experience in real businesses and industries to help young people learn both hard and soft work skills.
For example, at Afford's Mt Druitt ADE, trainees Simran and Ryan have been learning practical job skills such as labelling boxes, preparing mail run and stamping off invoices. They also took part in industry visits where they spoke with other employees and explored their future career options.
Once a participant has completed their SLES program, they will be ready to engage with Disability Employment Services (DES). DES is for people who want to gain paid employment in open employment and not in supported employment.
