Writing Notes: Fashion History

for your next poem/story (pt. 2/2)

1950s

The 1950s were a time of large cultural and social change, which was reflected in the world of fashion. The Korean War began in 1950, followed by the introduction of the color TV in 1951. And in 1954, the modern civil rights movement began.

As the suburbs became popular, family and domesticity for women became a prominent force in society. Additionally, teenagers became fashion consumers and market leaders for the first time.

Due to technological advances, new fibers such as polyester, triacetate, and spandex are introduced. 

The prominent trend of the time was femininity, as shown by the prominence of Christian Dior's "New Look". Shape was emphasized by full swing skirts or narrow pencil skirts, as well as fitted bodices and a small waistline achieved with the help of petticoats and girdles. Elegant accessories and jewelry such as hats and pearls were popular at the time, and high heels were ubiquitous. Other trends included Peter Pan collars, tapered or capri pants, and the introduction of the bikini. 

1960s

The Beatles led the music and fashion “British Invasion,” influencing teenagers with their Mod aesthetic.

The Civil Rights movement led to the popularity of ethnic and African-inspired garments such as dashikis and caftans.

The 1960s were marked by eclecticism, both in fashion and society. A plethora of styles were fashionable at one time, ranging from space age fashions using vinyl and synthetics, to bold prints, colors, and disposable paper dresses inspired by Pop Art.

Mod fashion appeared on the London scene, with fashion designer Mary Quant as the “high priestess” of the style, and Twiggy as its supermodel.

Boutiques, a 1960s creation, began offering designer ready-to-wear collections, while easy-care fabrics were increasingly used by the general public.

Longer hemlines were dominant with maxi skirts and granny dresses, while hot pants and mini skirts were adopted by the younger market. These shorter hemlines popularized the use of pantyhose for modesty. As the decade progressed, chemise dresses that typified the dominant straight A-line silhouette became popular. Turtleneck blouses and sweaters were common, and sleeves were usually three-quarter length. Sleeveless tops were worn after the mid 1960s.

Jacqueline Kennedy became a major fashion icon, famous for her sophisticated style, pillbox hats, and pearls. Overall, hats in general experienced a decline in use, due to the popularity of high bouffant hairstyles.

Knee high go-go boots were popular, patent was often used, and low-heeled, square-toed shoes were common.

Popular accessories included headbands, bold jewelry, and matching shoes and handbags.

1970s

During the 1970s, the eclecticism of the previous decade continued, and influences from subcultures dominated fashion.

The Vietnam War ended in 1973, and the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1974.

The hippie subculture emphasized environmental awareness and social acceptance, translating into the popularity of natural fibers and earth tones, loose garments, blue jeans, and ethnic influences in dress.

Peasant blouses and skirts and psychedelic prints were popular, as well as historic revival styles.

In the late 1970s, music styles such as glam rock, disco, and punk influenced fashion and resulted in flashy, often shocking styles.

For the most part, clothing was loose and unstructured compared to previous decades. Skirts came in a variety of lengths — mini, midi, or maxi — although the mini and maxi were the most popular.

Unisex styles in clothing became a trend and were perpetuated by Diane Keaton’s character in the 1977 film, Annie Hall.

Trousers and blue jeans were worn by women more than ever before. Designer jeans arrived on the market, resulting in the birth of “licensing” for non-fashion products. Polyester was the other preferred textile for trousers.

1980s

With the rise of new media such as MTV, the 80s fashion landscape began to shift rapidly.

The televised wedding of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer caused a fashion frenzy, with "Lady Di's" elegant hats, tailored suits, and evening dresses making her a global style icon. 

The 1980s were known as the "Me" Generation, with an emphasis on logos and designer labels.

The decade also saw the rise of yuppie (young urban professionals) culture, and the introduction of the fitness craze.

In the world of high fashion, postmodernism and avant-garde fashion were vastly influential. With the introduction of yuppie culture, business attire and "power-dressing" with items like shoulder pads was a popular trend.

In light of the fitness craze, leg warmers, tights, and leotards were widely worn, and women accessorized with big hair, flashy costume jewelry, and bright heels.

In terms of undergarments, Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier inspired an underwear-as-outerwear trend alongside the popularity of Calvin Klein.

1990s

The 1990s reflected subcultures such as punk, goth, and grunge in fashion.

Hip-hop music became popular and as a result, urban fashion was popularized.

Unlike previous decades, the 1990s was notable for a more relaxed and casual look, as well as the introduction of technology such as cell-phones and pagers.

With the rise of globalization & technology, the fashion cycle began to speed up. 

1990s style was often considered "anti-fashion,"  with purposefully clashing or contradictory aesthetics.

Black, minimalist styles were popular, as well as vintage and 1970s style.

Many younger people sported crop tops, cargo pants, and blue jeans, and athletic wear in daily life. In terms of shoes, high heels, wedges, sandals, platforms, and sneakers were all widely worn.

Backstory

Eons ago, when the Elder Gods defeated the One Being and created the realms, they decided to create weaker beings known as protector gods in order to guard the realm, and most importantly, the consciousness of the creatures living in them. To preserve their power and position, the Elder Gods needed a system to keep the mortals’ minds in utter darkness, so they established the Order of The Elder Gods. The protector gods’ main function and purpose was to blindly serve this order.

However, one of the realms contained a slightly bigger portion of the One Being’s consciousness which eventually led to “metal magic” being formed in that realm, and the people to be more susceptible to becoming conscious and aware. This realm needed a much more powerful god therefore the Elder Gods gathered a bit of each one their essence to create Falkus, the god of metals.

Falkus was gifted with the divine and perilous power of manipulating all kinds of metal. Falkus was dictated to be kind, selfless and wise, so he wouldn’t use his immense power in any ways that was unpleasant to The Elder Gods. He was a weapon.

Falkus began his duty while learning more about the cult and how to serve it properly. But well, everything comes with a price. In order to protect the Metalrealm, the most valuable thing he had, he had to kill many parts of himself. And just as the Elder Gods desired, he was very much willing to do that.

He didn’t need to sleep. He didn’t need to eat. He was merely a machine on high alert to exterminate any threats on sight. And to be honest, he did enjoy it because Metalrealm was everything he had.

But while fulfilling his duty as an obedient dog, he gradually realized that there isn’t anything in him for him to call a self. He couldn’t even permit himself to fall in love because well, he didn’t want his lover to be crushed under the pressure; just like what he was beginning to feel.

But sadly, he fell in love with a mortal man. He thought maybe he could make things work out. He was a powerful god, wasn’t he?

But in the end, he lost the only person who reminded him of himself. He simply walked out of his life. Who wanted an unavailable husband who was out there saving asses almost all the time?

Falkus was broken from the inside. Episodes of derealization and depersonalization became worse and more often. Symptoms of depression began to bloom in his every day life.

He was falling apart.

After that, he became scared of intimacy. He wasn’t going to fall for anyone, or make anyone to fall for him ever again. The walls around his heart were growing higher and higher.

And that doomed day arrived. Falkus was informed that a group of rebellions attacked one of the cultists in a sanctuary in Metalrealm. And, obviously, it was Falkus’s duty to eliminate them as soon as possible. Even though he wasn’t in any shape to do it, he tracked them down anyhow. Eventually, he found their outpost. Then, the Elder Gods directly ordered him to sabotage.

He tottered all the way to the outpost, and upon arriving, he learned that a group of rebels were already sent to launch an extensive attack. Currents of panic flooded his chest. Many innocent people would die if he didn’t get there immediately, and even the soldiers couldn’t do much. He didn’t care about the cultists anymore. Metalrealmers needed him more than anything, but there he was; executing Elder God’s stupid orders. And he couldn’t care less about the consequences of defying them.

Briefly, he abandoned the arena and ran to the promised location. However, it was pretty late. He fought and exterminated those rebels, eventually. But he couldn’t protect everyone just because the cultists were the Gods’ sweethearts. Falkus’s gaze wandered to a child drowning in his own blood. He felt like all of the buildings nearby collapsed on his head. He fell to his knees, and brought the child’s bloodied head to his chest. A few minutes later, his face was wet with thick streams of tears and his wail echoed in the ruins and ashes. The Elder Gods would step on anyone and anything just to maintain their power and control. He was just a tool and mortals were victims.

The day after, the Elder Gods summoned him. Not only did he defy them, but he also prioritized the lives of some metalrealmers instead of a couole of helpless cultists. He deserved to die, or at least be banished to the Netherrealm. But the real problem was that they needed him. He was too powerful and useful to be put aside so easily.

The Elder Gods declared his penalty: He was not allowed to leave Metalrealm under any circumstances. When he heard this, he could only laugh, hysterically. His hatred for them erupted, and he had mental breakdown before all of them. He told them that no one was powerful enough to protect the Metalrealm, and that they’d fail without him. In conclusion, his punishment was reduced in severity. He could exit the realm, but he was not allowed to use his powers outside.

This was enough to send him through a panic attack. Metalrealm was all he existed for. It was the nearest definition he knew of himself. And the cult was taking it from him just like it took everything else.

After a while of isolating himself, he learned about Delia’s vision about a near future: a girl raising armies against the cult. Falkus made his decision. He wanted his freedom no matter what, even if it meant using an innocent girl.

Falkus was reborn, and he was going to return himself to him.

Romero of "Night of the Living Dead" fame which featured fantasy, horror, supernatural and/or comedic plots) where John Waters muse and main star and drag artist Divine plays and East Asian monk and politician.

It's funny and entertaining to see Divine in an exclusively male, non-drag appearance, yet I found strange they casted him in an "exotic" role. Did they think playing people of different genders was the same of playing people of different ethnicities?

Despite how she appears, Alexis is a nice, friendly woman outside of her uniform who is kind to everyone. When she is not working, she enjoys spending her time outside in nature, taking photos with her Sony a7 IV. She dislikes being cooped up in one place, which is why she loves her cover job as a photographer, as it allows her to go to new places and see new sights. She loves the pictures she takes, considering them priceless treasures.

HEHEHEHE, I’m so glad you asked.

Her color palette is red and derived from the palette of the Tajikistan flag. Red represents as unity.

Her clothing utilizes Persian, Tajik, and Pamir elements due to the ethnic group she’s supposed to represent, her being Pamir-Tajik.

Persia is included because all of Central Asia, used to be a part of the Persian Empire. And a lot of the elements from Iran, were brought to us. I’m mentioning this because there is a bit of an overlap, culturally, where you can find similar characteristics between the two countries. But, they’re still very different locations (different dialects in the language, customs, traditions, etc).

Also, Tajiks originally migrated from Iran before settling into Central Asia; however that of course, predates way before the Persian Empire (it was a very long time ago too, LOLLL).

Her field outfit takes inspiration from Persian Immortal soldiers from the Achaemenid Dynasty. She wears a war mask as well. Typically, they have moustaches, which symbolizes pride/courage, and is for intimidation. I think they’re more cute than scary. :3 Her spike plate is impractical, and is just for the appeal in her silhouette LMAOOO.

The Winter Palace outfit mainly takes inspiration from Tashkurgan Pamirs. They follow the same rules with Tajik-style clothing with the chakan (robe/dress) and jizor (alternate names might be sirowal) pants.

Her base game outfit uses traditional Tajik clothing, with a kurta (except she has it sleeveless). The design uses the ikat-style of dyeing the fabric, which is also found in many cultures, so it doesn’t only pertain to Central Asia.
