on a cold day in October last year, my brother went for a walk to the gas station, and returned; caught between surprise, acceptance, and disgruntlement; with two skinny, unruly kittens in tow. these two little scraps of fur and nothing had elected to follow him, as hungry kittens are wont to do, I suppose.

now, almost a full year later, neither of those kittens are little scraps of nothing anymore, but they are a couple of little shits.

the first is Sir Thomas Sunkist Coolatta the second, named so because back then was when HLVRAI’s popularity was on the rise and my brother and I both looked at that cat and said, “oh, he’s definitely a Tommy.” Tommy is, as best he can be described, an absolute sock muppet of a cat. he would not move if a car was bearing down on him. he spends all his time either lounging, or sauntering around the house, because ‘sauntering’ is absolutely the best word to describe his walking gait. he’s smart, but he’s not clever, or perhaps he’s simply too lazy to put the work into actually applying his intelligence to getting away with mischief. as it stands, he’ll jump up on the counter to attempt to stick his face in your food as you watch him do it. he also LOVES to be in the way, and is a little glutton. I’m convinced he eats 75% of the food we set out for them. he’s a beefy boy though, so he does need the nutrition.

the second kitten is his sister, Lady Skittles Skibbles Bibbles Skumple Mountain Dew Code Red Coolatta the first, who we gave a comically long name to because it’s funny. she was actually initially named just ‘Skittles’ not after the candy, but because she’s the jumpiest cat without being outright anxious we’ve ever met. we almost never call her by her actual name and instead prefer to give her increasingly-stupid sounding nicknames, like ‘Skeeber’ and ‘Skumfrey’ and ‘Skrendel’ and so on. it’s okay though, she wouldn’t recognize her name anyway, because Skittles doesn’t have a brain. she’s, quite literally, just a nervous system. the empty cavity in her skull has naught but a screen saver, and every time it hits a corner, the sudden occurrence of a thought freaks her out so much that she simply screams internally, panics, flees, and then forgets that she had a thought in the first place. she’s technically my cat since I claimed ownership of her after my brother forfeited his rights to them by being too busy to properly take care of them.

we love em both to death. they’re the silliest little stinkers.
