Smoke Wagon by Brett Cogburn

Morgan Clyde #1

Well written, action packed, Western with a legendary hero starring as the lead character – Morgan Clyde is bigger than life but bleeds like any other man.

I was swept into Ironhead Station along with our hero. It is noisy, dirty, filled with the desperate and those milking the men of their money. It is a place not many would choose to live…unless they had a good reason to be there. And, some of them had good reasons while others had evil ones. Chief Clyde was commissioned to set the town to rights and that is what he set out to do.

What I liked:

* Morgan Clyde: Yankee Civil War Veteran, divorced, father, lawman, sharpshooter, lethal, liked by some and hated by others…a force to be reckoned with…but also very human. Reminded me of a few characters such as Gunsmoke’s Matt Dillon and perhaps a Western Jack Reacher.

* Dixie Rayburn: Reb Civil War Veteran, lawman, deputy to Chief Clyde, talkative, likable, someone I want to know more about.

* Red Molly: mixed feelings about her…kind of the fallen lady with a heart of…not gold but perhaps a soft spot for Clyde. She has her own set of issues…to be sure.

* The bad guys…and there were plenty of them.

* The descriptions: appealed to all the senses and made me feel as if I was there with the rest of the characters.

* Some of the supporting characters: blacksmith, cook, engineer building the line, Harjo and his men, and a few others

* That some of the bad guys were dealt with

* The characters – good and bad – were well fleshed out guys and not always but the person one would expect

* That justice, of sorts, was meted out to a few of the bad

* The historical references

* That there will be more books in the series to look forward to

What I didn’t like:

* The people I was meant to not like and the actions they were involved in

* Not having a clear conclusion to the story though this is a series and we have an inkling of where it might go

What I would have liked:

* I found myself skipping around to follow one story line or another and that made me think that this book could have been broken into two or three separate books. It was fine as it was but it might have been better, for me, if Clyde had dealt with one issue/person/group and settled things then had a new issue to deal with in the next book.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes – but enjoyed the beginning the most and the end…middle was skimmed a bit.

Would I read another book in this series? Yes

Out-Dated Review: Iron Man

A decade ago life was a bit more simple. I was turning 15 and besides finding time to play GTA IV and high school I didn't have a care in the world. My birthday was never a big deal but earlier that year I got my first PS3 and was desperate to start a Blu Ray collection. I told my mother the one thing I wanted for a gift that year was Iron Man. She delivered. That night after reading the case over a dozen times me and my best friend would sit down and watch the movie that jump started the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At the time I knew as little as you could about Ironman. I spent most of my time reading Spider-Man, X-men and Batman comics so the only things I really knew about Tony Stark was that he was a rich alcoholic and was really prevalent in 2006s Civil War which was in my backlog of comics. Going into this movie I really had nothing to go on besides the great reviews it was getting and that I was always excited to see a comic book character get their chance on the big screen. After credits rolled like many people my expectations were blown away. I watched it again and again enjoying every minute of it. I then dove into my comic backlog and read Civil War and any other Ironman story I could find. It’s safe to say that the first Ironman reinvigorated my and many others love for comics, all while starting a universe that would have as deep of lore as the comics they adapted from.

So ten years later, does Ironman hold up?

(SPOILERS)

Lets start things off with the story.

We’re introduced to Playboy Billionaire Weapons Designer/Manufacturer Tony Stark and he’s just as much as cocky jerk as you would think he’d be. Skipping out on an award presented to him so he could gamble, sleeping with a reporter who’s writing a hit piece on his company and giving little care to the crew of his private plane as he arrives late for its departure. Couple this with how he almost gloats at the amount of death and destruction his weapons bring you would be safe to assume that Tony is unremarkable cliche villain, except he’s not.

I don’t know if it’s his charm alone, his acting chops or how relatable he is to the character but Robert Downy Jr. makes Tony Stark probably one of the most believable and entertaining personality in the MCU. He brings so much life and fun to Tony even before his good guy turn in this movie. Easily stealing every scene he’s in, RDJ was undoubtedly destined to play Tony Stark.

Speaking of good guy turns.

Things go astray for Tony after a weapon presentation in Afghanistan as he’s fatally injured and kidnapped by a terrorist group known as The Ten Rings (more on them later). He awakes in a cave with a car battery attached to his chest, powering an electromagnet that’s keeping the shrapnel away from his heart and other vital organs. Parties amirite? He’s made aware that The Ten Rings are his “loyal customers” and have been using all his weaponry and is then forced to build them his latest weapon. Tony reluctantly agrees and uses the supplies and resources to build something a bit more powerful, a miniaturized Arch Reactor. An invention of his fathers that’s used to power a factory, Tony designed his to be a little more compact. It has enough power to keep the magnet [in his chest] charged for a thousand lifetimes or something big for ten minutes.

Thus Ironman is born.

Even for ten years old at this point, the CGI still holds up. The suits in this movie, whether it’s the Mk I, II or III all look fantastic and just completely seamless. I never once even questioned if they built an actual prop suit or not, it looked so good i assumed they did. Coincidentally the first Ironman is the only movie they actually built the full suit, every subsequent movie they used mo-cap primarily.

After 3 months using only weapon parts and presumably some scrap metal Tony builds the Mk I and kicks some serious ass in his escape. He’s quickly reunited with his friends and coworkers back in the States and damn does he want a burger. Also he announces very publicly he’s done with making and selling weapons. This is Tony’s big turn, he realizes the real cost of him profitting off war with his weapons and decides he is alone responsible for making things right. His business partner and his deceased fathers long time friend Obadiah Stane advises him to lay low for awhile after crashing his companies stock with his big announcement.

The Stark Employee Roster.

RDJ may steal the whole show but Ironman boasts a pretty big and talented cast. Gwenneth Paltrow as the remarkable and composed assistant to Stark Pepper Potts, she’s a joy to have on screen and perfectly bounces dialogue off RDJ. Terrence Howard plays Stark's best friend and military liaison Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Howard plays this character really cool and I have a hard time seeing Rhodey as much as I see Terrence Howard. His chemistry with RDJ is phenomenal off the bat though, something that takes Cheadle & RDJ about another movie or so to get right. Paul Bettany lends his soothing voice to articulate Siri knock-off known as JARVIS. While his role obviously becomes more expanded upon in later films, Bettany brings a simple yet appealing approached to the A.I. here that pairs well with Tony’s persona. Rounding it out you have the rugged Jeff Bridges playing Tony’s mentor and eventual madman Obadiah Stane. Bridges brings something to this role that I can’t quite put my finger on, he just fully leans into this character and I can feel his presence on screen. He does however have a very sudden change of character entering the third act, he goes from conniving business man to super villain so abruptly I may have whiplash (wink) now.

Bored and nothing to do.

Stark finds himself in isolation and does the only thing his obsessive brain lets him do, work. He begins designing and testing an updated version of the suit he escaped imprisonment with. The Mk II is a thinner, shinier and more airborne suit than its predecessor. It just isn't up to snuff for Tony though, so after a quick flight test with some icing issues, he completely redesigns the suit. After seeing on TV that someone is throwing a party without him, Tony decides laying low just isn’t for him and crashes the party. Thankfully the party is hosted by Stark Industries so Tony can just walk in with no real problem. It’s here that Tony learns that his mentor and friend Obadiah Stane filed an injunction against him and is trying to force him out of the company and may be dealing weapons under the table.

Tony decides take the moral high ground and hops in his new suit the MkIII which must be the coolest getting dressed montage I’ve ever seen, then flies for 6 hours back to Afghanistan. He proceeds to just ruin the Ten Rings day by destroying their weapon caches, which include plenty of Tony's own weapons. After surely making the locals think he’s some sort of alien or metal angel he flies back home, only to be intercepted by two fighter jets. What ensues is an entertaining little game of cat and mouse for a minute until Rhodey, whose job is seemingly just to be convenient to Tony shows up and Tony informs him he is in the suit that the fighters are chasing. Rhodes clears everything up as a trainig exorcise and Tony makes it home.

It’s here our big reveal happens, Obadiah is a bad guy and he hired the Ten Rings to kill Tony but they didn’t like the deal, so they altered it like Vader. Now they want to alter it even further and have Obadiah build them Metal Soldiers like the one Tony escaped with. Obidiah smiles and politely kills this faction of the Ten Rings and figures he might as well build his own suit with his own arch reactor.

Back at the factory while speaking to his team of scientists about their inability to replicate Tony’s miniaturized Arch Reactor, Jeff Bridges delivers the best line in the movie.

“TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAAAVE, WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS”

After this everything starts to happen real fast. Pepper finds a video that directly incriminates Obadiah, he panics and politely tries to kill tony, Rhodes shows up to try and save a dying Tony but he already saved him self. Once he catches his breath Tony hops in his suit to go find Obadiah. Terrence Howard takes a look at the MkII and decides it’s better that Don Cheadle gets to use it. Pepper while accompanied by some agents finds Obadiah's lab only then to be ambushed by Obadiah in a what can only be described as the offspring on the hulk-buster armour and war machine, Iron Monger.

Tony flies in with no time to spare and saves Pepper. A street fight ensues between Iron Man and Iron Monger with them chucking cars at one another. This fight seems oddly small scale now, having been spoiled by the massive fights we’ve seen in recent MCU movies. The smaller scale and one on one fight does feel more personal though and given that this is Iron Mans first outing it makes sense.

The fight goes airborne after Tony realizes he’s no match for the strength of the Iron Monger suit. Much to Tony’s surprise Obadiah has upgraded his suit as well and its now able sustain flight but as a call back to earlier in the film, the Iron Monger suit has an icing problem in higher atmosphere. Tony's suit begins to lose power as they fall back to the roof of the Stark factory. Tony sabotages Obadiah's suit so he cant shoot straight and Obadiah squishes Tony's helmet. Rude. The two men begin to fight with there wits and the bare minimum of their suits. Tony tells pepper to overload the Arch Reactor beneath him and Obadiah and after Tony begs she pushes the bug red button. Boom. Obadiah's suit short circuits and he falls to his death into the Arch Reactor causing it to explode.

I am Iron Man

I gotta give credit to this movies ending. Setting itself up like Tony is going to become your average secret identity super hero but in perfect Tony Stark fashion it subverts that by Tony declaring to the world he is Iron Man. It’s easily one the most memorable moments in all of the MCU. We also get our first name drop of SHIELD here, which at the time blew my mind because up until then super hero movies were so self contained. Credits roll and a Marvel tradition is born as the credits finish and we’re given another scene as Tony walks into his house to see a someone standing in his living room. NICK MF FURY.

“Think you’re the only super hero in the world? Mr.Stark you’ve become part of a bigger universe, you just don’t know it yet.”

One of the single most important lines in all of the MCU. When I saw this my 15 year old brain melted and while at the time I was ignorant to who owned what in regards to film rights my mouth foamed over the idea of all marvel characters existing together in a shared movie universe. It only took ten years and a couple billion dollars but all the marvel are finally gonna share a universe together.

Does it work?

With full retrospective Iron Man is your cut and paste Phase 1 MCU origin movie where the bad guy is basically just a different color pallet than the good guy, which is totally fine. There’s a reason they use that formula, it establishes characters perspective and personality along with their skill set to the audience. It could be because it was the first or just the combination of Favreau and RDJ and all the other cogs in the machine but no movie uses that formula better than Iron Man. I’m in awe of how much fun I had with this movie, I highly recommend going back and watching it again if you haven't recently. It holds up as it’s own movie but with the added benefit that you can clearly see how the whole MCU evolved from the style of Iron Man.

VERDICT

You should already own this, go make some pop corn and watch this./10

.Um, heh, hi. Venus coaxed me into doing this, considering she did the same, so here goes.

My name is Mars, although my full name is Marsian Moonlight Woods. My previous place of living was the Solar Meadow, but after a Boggan ambush, I started living in Moonhaven with Venus. I miss our former home, but I can’t deny that Moonhaven is beautiful, and filled with such kind people. Well, except for one person...

Anyhow, I do love to sing. Sometimes, me and Venus are hired to perform at any of Nim Galuu’s parties in his Big Tree. It can get a little intimidating, but I’ve started feeling more and more comfortable onstage. I also like to sit indoors, and read my old books on stompers. What? I find them fascinating, okay? Um, anyway...

After our arrival in Moonhaven, Venus and I joined the Leafmen after some mandatory training. It can be dangerous, but it always feels good, knowing that I’m protecting those I love. Now um, about my friends.

First is Venus. She may have her quirks, but she is the best little sister I could ask for. She’s actually my twin, but I was born 21 seconds sooner, so technically, I’m the older one. She’s always so positive and upbeat, and just wants to be everyone’s friend. I wish I was as outgoing and confident as her. I’m the only family she has left after the ambush, so I know it’s my duty to protect her from any kind of danger. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost her.

Up next is Nod. He may be a little reckless, and doesn’t think before going in, but he feels like a second brother to me. Venus really looks up to him, because of how similar he is to our actual brother, whom she also admired. I just hope he won’t influence her to do something stupid. But nonetheless, Nod is very brave and selfless. If it wasn’t for him, Venus and I would probably still be on the run.

Now for Ronin. He can be intimidating, but I can’t deny how fearless and noble he is. He would gladly give up his life for those he loves, and would stop at nothing to ensure our safety. Don’t tell him this, but I believe that he and Queen Tara should get together. They’d be a great couple!

Finn is next. He is a great second-in-command to the Leafmen, with his hard work, and kind heart. Don’t tell Venus I said this, but I know she has a huge crush on him. She should tell him how she feels before it’s too late! I know he would be the best boyfriend she ever had. If only she wouldn’t take after me, and just spill her guts. Not literally!

Now, Bomba is next. Uh... ... m-moving on! Heheh.

MK is up. She really is a great person, and perfect for Nod. Though I wonder if she knows about my... never mind.

Okay, that’s everyone. I don’t have anything to say about romance, so I’ll just skip that part.

Though it’s every bit as expensive as oceanfront cities down south — Malibu and Newport Beach, for example — the vibe in Montecito is significantly different. The homes are more private and set on bigger lots, and the locals significantly less flashy with their wealth. Montecito has also developed a rep as a haven for rich retirees, a population significantly older than folks who crowd those other rich beachy locales.

Yet that old-money Montecito demographic is changing, and younger peeps are now learning to appreciate the area’s hidden charms. Tinder co-founder Sean Rad — he’s in his early 30s — recently paid Ellen DeGeneres $11 million for a rather amazing old ranch. And cosmetics queen Jamie Kern Lima threw down a shocking $35 million just after her 40th birthday. Gwyneth Paltrow is building a big new Montecito house, Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis reside just south of town, and we’ve now heard from two different Montecito locals that betrothed actors Eva Mendes & Ryan Gosling have also been house-hunting in the neighborhood.

And as yet another signal of Montecito’s newfound allure for the wealthy young, a glamorous estate up yonder recently sold for $15,850,000. The buyers, we discovered, are a married couple named Mitchell and Lisa Green, both of whom are still in their 30s.

Mitchell Green

Our venture capitalist Mr. Green is a graduate of Wharton — one of the world’s most prestigious b-schools — and is the founder of Lead Edge Capital. Lead Edge, which is headquartered in NYC and has approximately $1.5 billion in assets under management, made its mark investing in startups and growth-stage companies, particularly those in the tech sector. Uber, Alibaba, and Spotify have all benefited from Lead Edge backing, and investors in Mr. Green’s fund have all reaped mega-bucks as the valuations of those firms have soared.

In less than a decade, Mr. Green’s firm has attracted investments from sharks such as Anne Mulcahy, the former chairman and CEO of Xerox; Alison Rosenthal, the former head of mobile at Facebook; Nigel Morris, the cofounder of Capital One; GitHub CEO Nat Friedman; and David Pottruck, the former CEO of Charles Schwab. Helping Mr. Green make those vital connections stemmed — at least partly — from his finance background: he started as an analyst for UBS directly after college, later migrating to Bessemer Venture Partners before earning his MBA while simultaneously working at a Julian Robertson-helmed hedge fund.

And Mr. Green, apparently, was not just twiddlin’ his thumbs while toilin’ away in some dark office — he was out networking and forging connections with industry heavy hitters. But of course, we digress.

The done-done-done Montecito estate home chosen by Mr. and Mrs. Green was originally built in 1996 and last sold in early 2015 for exactly $15 million to Edward & Shari Glazer. Oddly enough, Mr. and Mrs. Glazer — he’s the heir to a billion-dollar conglomerate — almost immediately proceeded to pay another $21,500,000 for the even larger and more lavish estate next door.

We’re not really sure why Mr. and Mrs. Glazer wanted two massive tennis court compounds in Montecito, but the smaller spread was back on the market by summer 2016. Even after an extensive renovation, however, it would be two full years before the home was picked up by the Greens. Given that the property went for less than $16 million and the Glazers spent loads of money upgrading and maintaining the premises — not to mention the cost of taxes and realtor fees — it seems likely they lost some change on this transaction.

Anyway, the 3.6-acre spread is set well back from the main road, down a private road that ends at towering metal gates. From there, the home’s driveway swoops awestruck guests past the tennis court and vast lawns, culminating in a circular motorcourt (ringed by mature date palms) outside the Mediterranean-themed mansion.

The front door opens to a double-height foyer with sightlines through the Palladian-ish windows to the Pacific Ocean by the horizons. Interiors here are done up in a chic and comfortable (if slightly generic) manner with a neutral color scheme. Most of the formal rooms have fireplaces, and all sport oversized windows and glassy doors designed to draw in the SoCal sunlight.

The kitchen is outfitted with a blazingly expensive SubZero fridge (seriously, that thing can cost more than a new Camry), and all the other appliances are equally swanky, too. We’re sure the housekeeper and/or chef will appreciate that. But more importantly (at least to the homeowners) is a delightful outdoor dining area with ocean and backyard views.

The 10,112-square-foot main house includes 5 spacious bedrooms and 8 baths. As y’all should expect, there’s a sitting area and a fireplace in the master suite. French doors and a private balcony accentuate the head-on ocean views. Somewhere also inside there’s an attic that’s been converted into a media/games room.

Out back, hidden from the pool/tennis court areas behind tall hedges and trees, is a discreet guest house that’s perfect for a live-in groundskeeper (which an estate of this magnitude probably requires).

Though the home’s interiors are perfectly nice and luxurious, the real star of this show is the backyard. We counted at least three formal fountains, exquisite formal rose gardens, and numerous sculpted hedges that ring the entire estate. Plus there’s a pool area with an adjacent cabana and 360-degree views of the ocean, surrounding treetops, and the fire-ravaged mountains.

Mr. & Mrs. Green are still (relatively) young, but this ain’t their first time on the Montecito real estate rodeo. Back in 2015, they paid just over $8.1 million for a “starter” estate that’s only a quick skip away from the new house. Since August (2018), their starter home has been listed for sale with a $10,250,000 asking price.

As y’all can see, the Greens clearly go in for a specific type of house. Their old place is basically a smaller version of the new $16 million estate — it’s got a similar Mediterranean-style main structure with clean-lined, contemporary interiors. There’s a long driveway that leads past formal lawns and the pool area before ending at a motorcourt, and there’s also a guesthouse. Heck, the place even has nearly-identical walkway stairs lined by formal rose gardens.

The Greens have established themselves as noted philanthropists in the Santa Barbara area and will be hosting their annual Halloween charity gala next week. For any Montecito locals, tickets are still available for the spooky bash, which Yolanda assumes will be hosted at their new estate. And if y’all like the look of their old house and have the necessary funds, do let Mr. and Mrs. Green know. We’re sure they’d be happy to give you a private tour of the premises.

DMK chief MK Stalin may need to evolve a crystal-clear working style and an interface for the Prashant Kishor-led Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) to work with the party hierarchy to ensure lower rungs in the command line carry the strategic messages to the grass roots, said people aware of the functioning of the DMK. The older Dravidian party in Tamil Nadu has banked on one of the busiest poll campaign strategists ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections.

After Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh, Kishor has committed to work for Mamata Banerjee in the east and MK Stalin down south, both being cornerstones to the array of forces against the BJP.

“In the DMK, not unlike the case in many other older parties, district secretaries are like kings. So, the party may have to work out a line of command to ensure he (Prashant Kishor, in picture) integrates with the party hierarchy without friction,” said a campaign strategist aware of the functioning of the DMK.

DMK insiders say the scope of Kishor’s work with the DMK will be apparent by the end of the current month. A lawmaker with the DMK, on condition of anonymity, said the party was “just as nimble as it is robust,” asserting that it would obey the commands of party president MK Stalin. According to people aware of Kishor’s plans for Tamil Nadu, over 500 young professionals will be hired by I-PAC to work for the DMK. Answering a query about Kishor’s outsider status as far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, an I-PAC official said the idea was to work with people who know Tamil Nadu—to collaborate with the DMK rank and file and young professionals who want a better Tamil Nadu.

Guest Blog: Entertainment Photographer Mary Caroline Russell

I’ve always loved music. I grew up dancing on hardwood floors to my parents’ records. Socks slipping around, arms waving, head shaking. There is some kind of magic in it. Some spark that happens. It starts in your ears and moves its way through your bloodstream and finally makes a home somewhere in your chest. It is a beautiful, untamable thing, and I knew early on that I needed music in my life for the long run.

My name is Mary Caroline Russell, and I am an entertainment photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve been shooting music for nearly ten years now, and although I know a lot more now than when I started, it still feels like I have just scratched the surface of everything there is to learn.

I got started where I was: Beaumont, Texas population 113,468, with what I had: a disposable camera. Exhibit A

Fast forward to today. Through a lot of local shows in dingy motel ballrooms, I upgraded from the disposable camera, and fell in love with photography. I hoped that if I went to work for a label, that maybe when I was forty they might let me take a few photos on the side as a perk. THAT was my grand dream hah! Through a few crossed wires, life circumstances, and disappointments, my plan to move to Nashville turned into more time in Beaumont, a short stint in Portland, and finally landing in Atlanta. A few weeks before I moved to Atlanta, I met my friend Michael who found out I wanted to shoot shows and offered to help.

When I got to Atlanta I sent him a list of shows in hopes any-one of them would work out. He ended up getting me into every show on that list! The first show I shot in Atlanta was Paramore at the Tabernacle.

Paramore

I borrowed a camera and probably shot 3,000 photos within the first three songs. I was so excited. I stayed up all night & skipped my first class to edit the images. It was such a thrill. After posting the photos, people assumed I was a professional and started hiring me. It seemed rude to correct them.

What followed for the next 10 years was a whirlwind. I have been able to circle the globe taking photos, shoot some of my favorite bands, be in Alabama shooting Lynard Skynard while they sang “Sweet Home Alabama” (that was a fun one), and be surrounded by some of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met. Here are a few of my favorite moments & stories from along the way:

Nikki Lane

Nikki Lane played an opening slot at Shaky Knees in Atlanta a few years ago, and I had set up to take a few portraits backstage when she finished up her set. Right before I snapped this photo she took a swig of her beer and said “Oh hey Danny!” I looked to my left and Danny Clinch was taking the same portraits. I snapped a few more and glanced back over, Danny was still there. To say I was excited would be an understatement. Danny Clinch is one of my all time favorite photographers. For him to casually appear next to me was not something I was prepared for, but it did make for one of my favorite memories.

Gary Clark Jr.

It was my second night out with The Muddy Magnolias on tour supporting Gary Clark Jr. I was still getting to know everyone, and I never want to be intrusive. I was standing behind a curtain peeking through watching the set. The band had walked off stage and Gary was playing solo for a few songs. I could just see a sliver, but I was soaking up every note. Gary’s bass player came around the corner and said, “What are you doing back here?�� then grabbed me by the hand and pulled me through the curtain right about the time Gary was walking side stage, I pulled my camera up to my face and snapped one shot.

Alan Jackson

I grew up on Alan Jackson’s music. I shot his Nashville show on his 25th anniversary tour. This is him walking on stage to start the show, next to him is my friend Nathan with about 1000 papers clipped to his lanyard because he is very important. One of my favorite memories of this show was; as I was shooting, I noticed someone walk up side stage wearing a massive cowboy hat. I looked over and it was Brad Paisley. He was sitting on a road case with his arms resting on the stage singing every word to Alan’s songs.

Taya Smith of Hillsong United

This was the first day of the Outcry Tour. I walked past the doorway and noticed how perfectly everything was composed. I hadn’t met Taya (pictured above) yet, but I also didn’t want to introduce myself and ruin what was happening so effortlessly. I walked down the hall and back, second guessed if the awkwardness was too much to bear. I decided the photo was too good to pass up so I walked by, kneeled down (you know, to add to the awkwardness), snapped the photo and said, “Sorry to snipe you, you just looked so cool.” It felt 100% uncomfortable for the next 5 seconds, but absolutely worth it for the shot.

The Muddy Magnolias

The Muddy Magnolias tour had been going on for a while. We were traveling in a van & trying to keep up with bus routing which means late nights and early mornings and a lot of motels. A lot of motels. We were somewhere in Iowa and pulled up to the Days Inn. It was a particularly bad set up. So we came up with a plan: fake an asthma attack, get a refund, pool our per diem, & book the nicest room in town. And it worked. This was just before heading to the show. We slept well.

I think what I have learned over the last few years is persistence, hustle, and gratitude can carry you a long way. Comparison robs you of your own voice, joy, & community. The grind is way more fun when you can celebrate others along the way, so don’t get caught up in somebody else’s “greener” grass. Find your voice, develop it, get comfortable with it. Enjoy the process. Lastly, voice you’re dreams because you never know who will be around and willing to help.

I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. I was stopped waiting to make a right turn. An emergency vehicle was coming in my direction from my left. Therefore, I was waiting for the emergency vehicle to pass. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. I have USAA and the other person has Geico. I just want to know exactly what to do in this situation. Since I'm out a car (I work for myself) I have been out (already) a decent amount of money for not being able to meet up with my clients. I spoke to my insurance today and they said that all my medical is covered since I had that already in my plan (without it raising my premium) and that I should get a settlement ON TOP of paying for damages to my car and getting me a rental, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to get taken for a ride. I've heard the horror stories of dealing with insurance companies. So i got pulled over for going 28 over the speed limit haha..... It was on a highway and the speed limit was 55 i was going 83 ..... Im from florida and my car and license are all registered in florida but im in georgia right now living with a friend trying to attend college (except i cant find a job cause the worlds slowly dieing lol) But anyways so i get pulled over by this state patrol narcotics douche bag who mind you has no teeth to begin with and in my mind either his mom beat his teeth out of his head or hes a recovering crack head who had lost all of his teeth over the years. I was at this point like .... Ok? So i get out go to the back and he says I asked you to get out cause i see your eyes are red I told him ummm it could be the fact that im allergic to dust and pollen and im driving with the windows down, i rub my eyes cause they itch thusly they get irritated. So i said either its that or the fact that i just got no sleep from the night before and drove my friend up to north carolina. And he then proceeded to ask if he could search my car. Im a month from being 20 and never got pulled over before and ofcourse i said yeh w.e. I smoke cigarettes and when he went to go search my car he comes out freaking out. IS THERE ANY DRUGS IN THE CAR OR ALCOHOL i was like no.... and hes like WELL IF I FIND ONE SEED OF MARIJUANA YOUR GETTING LOCKED UP AND CHARGED 1,100$ ... i was like ok go ahead i dont have anything so thusly he didnt find anything cause i didnt have anything .
