VP Records set June 16th, 2023 for SOCA GOLD release

VP Records annual carnival compilation, Soca Gold is set for release on June 16th, 2023.  The longest-running compilation series celebrating the best in soca music features eighteen high-energy tracks from some of the genre’s most exciting artists, including Bunji Garlin, Nailah Blackman, and Shaggy.

Arriving at a significant time in the genre’s history, Soca Gold 2023 coincides with the 50th anniversary of soca music and the 25th anniversary of the Soca Gold series. In the spirit of the constantly evolving genre, the project is a forward-looking showcase of the vibrant and exciting mix of the latest crop of carnival winners as well as heavyweights and guests to the genre.

“We’re excited to release Soca Gold 2023, which spotlights the incredible talent and creativity driving soca music forward,” said company president Randy Chin. “This selection is a testament to the enduring appeal of the genre and the crucial role it plays in Caribbean culture.”

Diamond-selling dancehall reggae star Shaggy contributes “Mood (Road Mixx)” featuring Kes and “Don’t Run (Road Mixx)” featuring. Skinny Fabulous to the mix and reggae star Romain Virgo guests on “Nothing Better” by Nadia Batson. Exclusive tracks on this year’s edition are the singles “Memory” by Lyrical and “Push Back” by Ricky T. 

Soca Gold 2023 is a singular source for fans of up-tempo grooves and hard-core carnival paradors, and the kickoff for summer fun.

“Oh, now that’s what good pussy sounds like.” Poison comments upon entering the room. Three heads turn to stare at them.

“What?” They ask innocently as the beeping of the Geiger counter continues.

Ghoul grins at them, “Dude, I’m radioactive! Isn’t this wicked!” he exclaims from where Jet is scanning him.

“No!” Jet barks, “You being radioactive as a god damn meltdown machine is not cool, Ghoul. How are you alive??”

“I think it’s cool.” Poison pipes up, joining the group. “Do you glow in the dark?”

“I don’t think so.” Ghoul replies with a pout. “Hey Jettie, if I get more radioactive will I glow in the dark?”

Jet Star looks like she’s dying inside, exchanging a desperate glance with Kobra who just shrugs helplessly.

“Please do not get more radioactive.” She begs, “How did you even get this radioactive in the first place?”

Ghoul shrugs, “Maybe it was that pool I swam in, the water did look weird.”

“Pool? What pool?” Jet asks.

“Oh right, you weren't there.” Ghoul mumbles, “It was at the old power plant.” He explains casually, “Me n' Kobra took a dip, it was nice.” 

Jet slowly turns their head to stare at the killjoy to his right, then looks back at Ghoul. “The power plant.” They echo slowly, “As in the one in zone seven that was set on fire? The one that nothing grows around because it made the ground so toxic? That power plant?” 

“Yeah.” Ghoul replies, as if he didn’t just admit to not only going to a dead zone, but to swimming in a highly toxic pool of Destroya knows what. “What of it?”

“How are you alive?” Jet begs, turning the Geiger counter in Kobra's direction only for it to read as a fraction of what Ghoul was, spiking at, a much more normal level for a zonedweller.

“And you um, swam too?” She asks, sighing when Kobra's nods. “Okay, so why the hell is Ghoul radioactive and not you?”

Kobra shrugs.

“I’m just built different.” Ghoul replies, “I soak it up. Radiation sponge.” he says with a grin.

Jet pinches the bridge of their nose. “Yeah, sure bud.” They say weakly, "Witch, how are you alive right now."

"Honestly, I don't think the pool did that much, pretty sure I've always been a little radioactive." Ghoul says nonchalantly. "I dunno what the big deal is."

"You dunno what the- what the deal is." Jet echoes, "Fuck, he's fucking stupid." She hisses under her breath. "The big deal is you shouldn't be able to survive that-"

"Well, I am." Ghoul says with a shrug, "So, like I said. Built different." He holds up his hand and Kobra high fives him.

Jet Star wants to scream.

The fact that my chem had ( honestly still has to some ppl) the reputation of being a like suicide death cult is so wacky in retrospect. Like idk I was a literal actual child during my chems height of popularity in the early 2000s and 2010s and even I remember ppl being like “ hide your children from the emos they will turn them gay and give them depression” and like HUHHH. Like that was a thing!! It’s kinda a joke now but it was fucking real??! What the hell were ppl on?
