this isn't meant to soften or reduce the objective transmisogyny + additional hate action going into this, but since the people running these harassment campaigns are acting like they're literal baby children who need their hands held to understand anything, maybe this needs to be said:

what you're doing and how you treat trans women on this website is fucking MEAN. if you want to sit there and honestly convince yourself that you're *not* a transmisogynist or a transphobe or a misogynist or any other type of bigot - like if you genuinely believe that and are confused why people are calling you these things - then maybe we need to start from little primary colored building blocks and tell you that you're being fucking mean and rude and actively harmful to real people who read the things you say. im not sure why we need to start off with "trans women have feelings" - just kidding I know exactly why we need to - but maybe you don't.

no matter who you're talking to, do you honestly think accusing someone you do not know of being a pedophile, en masse, behind their back /and/ in a public forum, is a reasonable way to treat someone for making a tumblr post about video games or political opinions? even if you strongly disagree with the post, you think someone deserves to be treated like that by people they don't know? take a second please and sincerely imagine how that would feel. wouldn't it be scary? wouldn't you wonder who the people were who thought this about you - if they're people you know - if they're just a few people that will continue saying mean things to you forever or if there are thousands of people who choose to dedicate their time and energy specifically to making you feel bad? if you accidentally write a post in the wrong tone or unknowingly interact with a shitty person, that there are uncountable people that will keep track of that just to hurt you later? that's fucking horrifying

and to zone in on what's specifically happening here: do you think randomly accusing people of being pedophiles or sexual abusers has no effect on them? like a lot of you tend to excuse yourself in these discussions by saying "I didn't actually see the context of what they were saying" or "I didn't see that they apologized already" or "I didn't actually understand the post was a joke" or whatever other kneejerk response to make sure *you* aren't seen as a bad person. do you realize that makes you look even meaner? you didn't bother to actually follow up on a thought you had about someone before sending them hateful messages or making public accusations about them? those actions are harmful whether or not you like the victim at the end of the day.

believe it or not some people you send this shit to are survivors of abuse themselves, or have their own historical personal reasons to be weighing in on a touchy subject. when you baselessly decide it's ok to call someone an abuser of any type, that person is probably *also* disgusted by whatever horrible shit you're accusing them of. as someone that hates these things as much as you do in order to attack someone for them: what do you think it's like to have complete strangers think that about you? how many eggshells would you walk on if random people thought so little of you that they were ok doing this?

it's mean. it's heinous, cruel bullying, and if you genuinely think you are not doing it from a place of transmisogyny or hatefuk bias over the victims' identity, then you need to understand that that's not an excuse. tumblr is an echo chamber but if you say that you're accused of being a fascist or whatever when it's just plainly and simply true. it's genuinely wonderful to have an online space dominated by autistic people and leftists but the disadvantages of such a space rear their head quite quickly when you think about it for more than five seconds.

okay, no rewind. first thing, I’m sad to say but tumblr mentality has spilled over irl a long time ago and at this point the only thing we can do is hoping this historical moment passes a long time ago (it had already spilled over the moment I had to read actual articles about people actually asking to remove Ovid from a ***classic literature*** curricula because there are rape scenes in the metamorphoses). whatever.

now about this, the problem is: I do think that if someone writes about X character that belongs to a minority they should do their research before touching the topic if they care to write a good book (if they don’t then it’s another problem entirely but let’s just assume they do), but it has to be a thing you do before you actually write that shit. I absolutely don’t agree with write what you know only because otherwise we wouldn’t be publishing a damned thing and honestly some people also write so that they don’t have to always rehash what they know, but if you’re doing a socially sensitive theme you have to try and do it right - if I decide I write a book with a trans character I can’t do it before I talk to a sizable amount of trans people and I don’t read more than a bit on the subject, same as if I decide to write a book set during idk the vietnam war where the protagonist is a ptsd vietnam veteran I can’t do it if I haven’t read a ton of lit/history books about the vietnam war and talked with a few psychologists or psych students or read something about ptsd. but that’s a thing that’s your duty as the author, if you want to do a serious book about a serious thing. if you just want to dick around it’s another problem entirely but let’s just say that I want to do that, it’s on me to do it, not on my **sensitivity readers**, and anyway a sensitivity reader (which once upon a time should have been called editor but never mind) shouldn’t have that much power, ie: once I read a tumblr post which basically said ‘white writers couldn’t ever write poc characters because they possibly can’t understand [now what POC meant in that sense is an entire other question that was left unanswered of course, bc poc doesn’t mean just black but nvm] but they have a moral obligation to because poc writers aren’t as popular/are hired less than white writers, and even at their best they will never get it right and they’ll fuck the poc characters up but who cares, they have to do it and take the criticism so they realize how it feels to be discriminated’.

now, I personally would never hear any advice from THAT above person if they were my sensitivity reader, because the concept that if I’m white then I can’t possibly get it right means that they already decided my work is going to suck ass even if it’s a masterpiece, and then... fuck that? I mean, I have no moral obligation to write anything I don’t want and with that attitude you basically make sure that someone is never gonna try to branch out. and where were the sensitivity readers when fifty shades came out, and all the subsequent YA porn books where it looks like your ideal man should be a stalker? we just don’t know, but no one cares to have sensitivity readers on ***that*** shit because guess what, it sells.

like, the problem shouldn’t be that you as a writer might offend someone with your writing because that can be because you’re actually offensive or because you’re nabokov and you wrote lolita and people who don’t get the point of it think it’s offensive and that it should be burned. you can’t start writing shit thinking of whether you’re going to offend someone or not with it because otherwise you’ll never get anywhere and you couldn’t touch one single sensitive topic (and on this, I’d appreciate sensitivity readers when it comes to atheist characters but NEVER MIND THAT XDDD /joking). what people should do is encourage potential writers who want to write socially sensitive stuff to talk to other people first and research their topic if it requires it.

What I mean is, let’s do a practical example: let’s take the basic lady chatterley plot (woman has a husband that neglects her both sexually and as a person and finds happiness with another guy who lives just under the husband’s nose). the original lady chatterly is already socially sensible because it has class issues and whatnot, but if you just want to write your torrid romance novel about the white suburban mom falling in love with the new white hot neighbor while her white husband doesn’t notice her existence and they have all the a+ sex in the world you’re perfectly entitled to and like, just get yourself an editor that will tell you if your porn sucks or not. there, this one’s easy.

but, let’s say that you want to have the white suburban mom being a victim of domestic violence instead of having the husband being just neglectful then you should research something about domestic violence and the effect it has on people. it has already become way more socially sensible, because you can’t just shrug it away and the sex she’ll have with her new guy won’t be the same as the sex she used to have with her husband, or alternatively, if the husband’s neglectful only you can have a difference between quick missionary and hot steamy long fucks with the new guy, if he’s abusive and he abuses her sexually you have to have nonconsensual vs consensual which is already a whole new heap of problems.

or, let’s flip it around: the domestic violence victim is a man, the wife is the one abusing him, he falls in love with the new female neighbor next door. this implies that you have to look into female on male domestic violence and research how frequently men aren’t taken seriously especially if the perpetrator is a woman, so you have the above plus this.

or, the victim is a man, the perpetrator is a woman, he falls in love with the male neighbor next door. in this case you have to make sure you know how to write a guy who has to get out of an abusive relationship and have a sexuality crisis if he didn’t know he was also into dudes.

or, all three are male, or all three are women: you have to look into statistics to see how male on male or female on female abuse works, on top of all of the above, on top of you have to know how to write an abuse victim. and, if there’s children involved? you have to deal with that too and you have to make sure the abuser isn’t a complete stereotype or some kind of boogeyman because that kind of story is effective if the perpetrator is someone who doesn’t look out of a twilight fanfic *cough*. if you make any of those characters trans then you have to look into it, too, if you make any of them not white or not your ethnicity you might wanna look into that too, and so on. and if you wanna throw in the lady chatterley class thing then you have to also think about what it means if some of the characters are rich, if others are poor, if they’re all middle class, if they’re all poor, all rich and so on.

what I mean is that the same plot, with some changes, can require zero research beyond what metaphors to not use while writing porn (example one) to a whole fucking lot of research and it’s on you to find people to discuss it with before and then to possibly proofread it before you send it to any publisher so you at least are sure you have a thing in your hands that doesn’t suck or has glaring inaccuracies. at that point your sensitivity reader should be able to give it a look and maybe give you advice which you should be able to reject if you don’t think it sound - for example, let’s say I write the above book in its most socially sensitive approach. like, dunno, let’s say the abuser is a cishet white man, the protagonist is a white ftm trans person who also can’t/won’t transition because of their abusive husband and the neighbor is, dunno, a black cishet woman. this would require a shitload of research should I try to write it. but then let’s say I do it and then I decide to write it from the pov of the abusive husband. which is a legitimate literary choice and I’m taking it with the entire intent of making him an abusive asshole without trying to justify his actions and to pull a less skilled humbert humbert in the world (because I’m not nabokov and no one is, but one could and should be able to write villains as a POV if they want to) and that I made sure to depict him as The Worst. if my sensitivity reader says that it’s offensive that I would write it from that guy’s POV in the first place and nothing else matters, it wouldn’t matter if I wrote the best book of the last ten years, it would still be deemed offensive. and that is a thing that shouldn’t fly - meaning, that if this is just a background check to make sure you don’t do bad representation (which you should have already done yourself anyway) it could have its usefulness, if it becomes a way to say that you can’t write what you want or problematic characters/villains shouldn’t be a POV choice even if you show them to be terrible then we’re straight into censorship land and that... shouldn’t be a thing.

tldr, you didn’t even ask for this entire rant but tbh I’m worried about that possible outcome (especially since that article mentioned roth which on this website is already hated as the champion of the white old man protagonist who wants to bang his students by people who don’t understand shit about either roth or writing in general) more than about checks on whether a thing is offensive or not, which anyway seems to me like is thoroughly ignored if the book sells (see: every other stalker seen as an ideal dude in YAs post-50 shades *sigh*).

Wrapping Up My Seattle Trip Part 2

Where were we.. oh yes! Day two at my sister’s cabin on Hood Canal. I started the day by going for a ride in the kayak with my son. He commented on how we were so in sync and going ‘so fast’ so I guess I did a good job :) He had been on it the day before with his sister. It was again a beautiful day so while it was a workout to do the rowing, it was also fun and relaxing since the weather was so pleasant (if it was really hot out I probably would have hated doing that!).

A little later in the day, my kids went out on the boat with my brother-in-law and my nephew to drop the crab cages in the water. I was not in my bathing suit yet and decided to hang back with my sister. Later that afternoon, I decided to go along when it was time to pull up the cages. This called for a quick change..

I was wearing my polka-dot swim suit, but put my swim cover dress on too because it was fairly cool on the water. I was glad I wore that or I would have been quite cold. 

As we were hauling in the crab cages, we took turns grabbing the buoys. I left the act of pulling up the cages to my brother-in-law, daughter, and son because they all had water shoes and I did not (just my slip on sport shoes that I use normally for bike riding). Their feet were getting soaked as they did it :) Also, I was on the front of the boat in nice lounging position so I decided to sit still and try to look pretty (bad joke about a hit song on the radio now). 

As we were about to drive the boat to another buoy we saw a mama seal and her cub! They were twisting around each other and came partially out of the water only about 25 feet from us. It was so cute! We saw a ton of seals in the canal during our stay actually, but these were the closest ones.

We returned with 5 crabs that were of legal size to keep. Yes, I did eat crab that night. It was delicious with some melted smart balance butter. 

After we got back, I began making dinner while my brother-in-law began cooking the crabs. He was planning to shell just a few to add to dinner and do the rest later. I made stir fry out of some thai noodles and veggies. 

That night, we did more stargazing and satellite spotting. We also pulled out my brother-in-law’s telescope and looked at the craters on the moon.

The next day was more low-key for me as I volunteered to watch my niece so that my sister could go both tubing (being pulled by jet-ski) and crabbing. I did not mind at all. My little niece is six months old and she is beautiful and so precious :) I fed her a bottle and she slept in my arms. Later she woke up and I read her a story but of course she was more interested in manipulating the board book’s pages with her hands. Eventually we got through the story though :) She is such a good baby and only mildly fussy when she needs something. She also seemed to like her Auntie Ari very much as I can get her to smile just by catching her eye and flashing my own smile. I love her so much!

I also read a book to my nephew after I told him I read his sister a story. He is an equally amazing kid who is super bright and has an incredible memory :)

The next day, it was time to get up at 3:50 am to get ready for a flight that boarded at 7 am at the SEA-TAC airport. When I fly I always dress as nicely as possible as I find it helps me with getting through the TSA with no issues.

My kids and I were able to go through TSA Pre-Check as I was assigned it randomly even though only one of them had it as well. As a result, we breezed right through. Our flight was again on time. I was very impressed with Delta. I actually enjoyed both flights and so did my kids. My son and I watched the first two Star Trek reboot movies on the monitors (one on the way out and one on the way back). He was obsessed with making sure we were on the same frame of the movie so we could enjoy the movies together. He is all about shared experiences and I love that about him. 

We took an uber to drop the kids off at their Mom’s and then I used the same driver to get back to my place. On the way to my place, I decided to see if I could get in last minute with one of my local salons for a blowout on my hair. I knew I would be exhausted the next morning and wanted my hair to be a non-issue for getting ready to go into the office. The salon I normally use was booked so I tried a new one and I thought she did a great job, it was also cheaper than I am used to paying! 

Well, that wraps up the recap of Ari’s vacation. I am ready to take on the week and also ready to get back to streaming on my Twitch gaming channel starting Wednesday night. I hope to see some of you in the channel chat! 

By the way, today marks 33 months on HRT for me - just a little side note!

i see so much mcelroy stuff on tumblr but have 0 other knowledge besides what's on my dash, where would i even start on getting into their content?

ok so idk how long this ask has been in my inbox (idk if i got a notification for it?) but i will try to answer your question as best i can! if you want a short answer, i first watched their “monster factory” youtube series, and then fell into the rabbit hole, so i feel like “monster factory” is a pretty lighthearted way to get into their humor. additionally, the 6 episode “my brother, my brother, and me” tv show would also be a pretty chill way to be introduced to their whole deal. however, i feel like this question necessitates a longer answer, since their content is so diverse. the rest of that answer is under the read more. i am very sorry for how long it is. i mean, it’s seriously long. but i hope it helps (if you decide to read it)!

so the mcelroy family of products got its start, pretty much, through a podcast called “my brother, my brother, and me” (or mbmbam or short), which is a “comedy advice podcast” where the three mcelroy brothers, justin, travis, and griffin, “answer” listener questions and yahoo answers questions (also sent in by listeners), generally by taking the concept and making jokes about it. mbmbam has a very significant back library (like each episode is around an hour and they’re on episode 380 now), so what i have done is watch a lot of animations and bits people have isolated on youtube to get sort of a “greatest hits” if you will. some quality bits: “sleep jeans”, “glass shark”, “three deep on the window”, “SHRIMP! HEAVEN! NOW!”, and “hatsune miku”, among many many others. also, they made a 6 episode mbmbam tv series, which is free to watch on vrv.com! that’s a pretty light way to get into them tbh

another podcast the mcelroys do, which you’ve probably seen a lot of on your dash (especially from me, sorry), is “the adventure zone”. this is a podcast where justin, travis, and their dad clint mcelroy play dungeons and dragons, guided by griffin, the dm. now idk what you’ve seen, but i bet at least some of it discusses how emotional and heart-wrenching it is. however, if/when you click play on episode 1, you’re gonna be like “huh? this is the emotional shit they’re talking about?” but trust me, it gets better as it goes on. it also gets better as it goes in terms of representation! again, it starts out pretty basic, very male-heavy, but as the series continues, the amount of female characters increases exponentially, and there’s some good lgbt representation as well, including at least 2 canon gay relationships and a trans woman main character! so if you like fantasy adventure that’s honestly pretty light on the fantasy sometimes, and getting emotionally involved with a group of characters who call themselves “tres horny boys”, then this is the podcast for you.

finally, i’ll touch on their youtube endeavors at polygon. polygon is a video game journalism website where both justin and griffin work, and this website also has a youtube channel that uploads some humor/let’s play (ish) content. justin and griffin both star in “monster factory”, which is a series where they create characters in video games that look ridiculous and create a fiction around them and play the games for a short period of time, often using mods or console commands to fuck the games up in addition to the characters. monster factory was my introduction to the mcelroys, and if you’d like a lighthearted way to ease into their humor, this is a good start. some good episodes: the fallout 4 series, their “second life, second chances” series (and the original second life episode), their spore series, and the black desert online episode. also, griffin has been the sole star of a couple very good series, including his pokemon y nuzlocke run, and his pacifist endeavors in world of warcraft called “peacecraft”

in addition, the mcelroys are involved in numerous other podcasts, which you can find (along with all their other works) at mcelroyshows.com!

again i can’t stress enough how sorry i am for the length of this response, but i feel like, with how different the stuff the mcelroys are involved in is, i needed to give a more detailed explanation of what everything is so that you could choose the mcelroy product that best fit your interests!

*old man voice* it all started so many years ago…

Just kidding, but it did start when I was a junior in high school. I was kinda scrolling through tumblr, as one would do, and I saw that one of my friends (one that I actually knew in real life and had classes with) was posting asexual things. I got curious, so I tried looking things up. Now, I live in a fairly conservative town. Not that people are blatantly homophobic or anything, but it wasn’t diversity central either (we are aptly nicknamed Vanilla Valley), so I hadn’t had much exposure to the lgbt+ community beyond gay people and the vague idea of trans people. I got really confused about what I was seeing, so I asked my friend what the word asexual meant. Somehow, in the process of trying not to look like an insensitive asshole, I ended up on a website that had the different ace identities. The word demisexual was on there, but I largely ignored it, since my friend is sex-repulsed ace and that’s more what I was interested in learning about.

That was my first time seeing the word, but something must have struck a cord with me, since I ended up kind of toying around with the idea of being asexual in some capacity. I even mentioned that to my mom (she promptly told me I wasn’t allowed to be asexual). In the end, I kind of discarded that idea since I was aware that I wasn’t completely opposed to the idea of sex. Time skip to when I was a freshman in college (I’ll be a sophomore in the fall). 

I had a few friends that I would get dinner with after lab, both of whom were in a relationship. I asked them how they met their respective boyfriends, and the conversation turned too, of all things, some of the kink they tried. We were all laughing and stuff, but, I don’t know, I just felt off. I couldn’t get it out of my head. I got back to my room, pulled out my laptop, and googled the word demisexual. I read about some of the common demisexual experiences and I was a little shell shocked. I told myself not to panic, so I made a list. Ways I was demisexual and ways that I wasn’t. The way that I wasn’t had one item. The was the was had somewhere close to fifteen (fifteen that I was willing to admit at the time, at least). So I messaged a different friend on tumblr who mentioned that she was demisexual and asked her about it. We talked for a while, and something clicked with me. When I woke up the next morning, I dived into the tag and was sorely disappointed. I wasn’t “out” to anyone yet, so I couldn’t make any posts on my main blog. I decided that I needed a healthy outlet for some of feelings. so I created this blog. That was that.

Over the course of the next several months, I kept up a sort of informal diary. It is strictly related to the demi stuff and helps me organize my thoughts. In retrospect, I never acted like you would expect a straight person to act. There was a lot of posturing on my end so that I would appear “normal.” Looking back has only strengthened what I already know. 

Okay, like, one time, all these kids on the bus were asking if I was gay. Which my response was totally not “why are you even asking me that” and was more along the lines of “what??? No???? I totally love guys. I’m super into dick.” Which. Come on. A guy asked me out once and I panicked so bad I ran away from him. Clearly I was convince both myself and the other people. But also, I never made any moves on anyone regardless of gender. I was always joking about some fake boyfriend I had. Everyone knew it was fake, which was the funny part, but wouldn’t someone else just joke about their crush? Yeah, didn’t have one of those. The last true and proper crush I had was in sixth grade and one day I decided I didn’t want to have a crush, so I promptly stopped all my feelings. Again, not something that a totally straight person would do. Like? Who just wakes up and decides “yeah, not in the mood to have a crush anymore. I’m over this.” and just be done like that unless they’re ace and trying to force attraction that isn’t there? 

Just looking back, there are so many little moments that were clearly me being vibrantly asexual. So if you have any of those little moments where you just feel out of the loop or are trying to convince other people of your attraction, you’re probably ace or demi in some way. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable talking about sex unless I intitate the conversation. In the same vein, I don’t like seeing sex, or even kissing, on tv or in movies. And I only like reading about it if I feel the characters have a deep enough connection AND I have been thoroughly warned in advance about the content. I need time to prepare myself or it makes me real uncomfortable real fast. Maybe that happens to you. Maybe not. And anyway, your lack of experience could be an indicator of your ace-ness. I mean, I’m 19 and I haven’t ever gone on a date. Not for lack of opportunity, but more because I just never really had the drive beyond a vague, abstract idea about what a hypothetical boyfriend would be like.

I had two profound experiences today, extremely unrelated in context but both thought provoking after the fact. The first experience had to do with me getting my first library card in 18 years and how I was very anxious to go into the library for any reason other than to print something.  I will detail this experience in a different post but long story short, all of the embarrassment and shame I felt because of my learning disability melted away and I ended up spending nearly two hours just browsing books. I left feeling to included and happy, I actually cried tears of joy.  Fast forward to the second notable experience of my day. Tonight I went on a date with my flat mate to “Naked Girls Reading: The Feminist Propaganda Edition”. Naked Girls Reading is apparently a sort of “brand”, started in the US as a protest against the ways women’s bodies are usually sexualized when naked. The theory is exactly what it sounds like, performers are completely nude and read aloud to the audience.  I had never heard of this amazing concept, so I jumped at the invitation. ESPECIALLY since tonight’s theme was feminism. I figured naked women reading feminist works sounded AUHMAZING.  [Rest behind a cut for length and transphobia]

The event was hosted by a popular personality in the New Zealand LGBTQPIA scene. They are a self labeled transvestite that MC’s events as their drag king persona, Hugo Grrrl. I assumed, if it was hosted by a gender diverse person it was going to be fairly inclusive.  Welp, you know what they say about assuming. 

Things started promising as Hugo opened their monologue with my favorite greeting “Guys, gals and nonbinary pals”. Hugo then went on to talk about some of the topics of the night including body positivity, body hair, porn, sex work, sex positivity, etc. It sounded really exciting and inter-sectional, I was pumped.

Within the ten minute monologue there was also the disclaimer that “Although this is called “Naked Girls Reading”, gender is a spectrum and the binary is bullshit.” (woo, yeah!!) ”...We only call it that because it was started in America and we didn’t come up with the name.” (Wait, what?)

Ok... but you could literally just call it “Naked People Reading” or “Naked Folx Reading” or ANYTHING else if you want to TRULY be inclusionary. I wasn’t even concerned about the title UNTIL Hugo made the point to say gender binary is bullshit... but then to say “meh, we didn’t come up with the title we’re just being complacent in it” Was sort of shitty.  If you are trying to include people, then INCLUDE them. Don’t say “Hey I’m not transphobic, BUT....” There was no point of this disclaimer other than to point out you recognized a problem but would rather go along with it than change one word of the title of the show.  Things only went down hill from there. A few minutes later as Hugo was wrapping up the monologue they wanted to get the crowd pumped before introducing the performers for the evening. To do this, Hugo had “all the women cheer!” (which they did) then followed by “now all the men!” (which they did). It turned out it was just a set up to make the men a punchline of a very stereotypical “feminist hate men” joke. These jokes are always obnoxious and yes, I recognize Hugo was trying to connect to the large feminist audience so we could all laugh at how society views us...but again, we were back at only acknowledging the gender binary. 

Now I realize many people right now will think I’m being extremely cynical. “Kit, you can’t say someone is being trans exclusionary if they are a queer that self identifies as a transvestite!” But I can because they were.  If you are going to mention nonbinary people. If you are going to make a point of talking about how the binary is bullshit. If you want to have a disclaimer that gender is a spectrum. It’s ALL or nothing.  Inclusion isn’t “I acknowledged you, you should be happy” it’s “I acknowledged you AND included you with everyone else as if we’re all the same.

The monologue is over, I am properly uncomfortable and agitated, the performers come out. From the promises of topics, I expected diversity. Again, that nasty assuming sure got the better of me.

Instead I get two skinny women and one average sized woman. They all appear to be white (although one was painted head to toe in blue and pink body paint as a My Little Pony...and later I learned she isn’t actually white.) They’re naked. So I can tell body hair isn’t really happening. A bit of bush but perfectly smooth everywhere else. All have shoulder length or longer hair and present very feminine.  Idk, again, maybe I was just so cynical by this point that I let my critic get away with me. I just wonder how hard it would be to find a more diverse cast? Am I just too deep in tumblr culture to expect to see different size bodies at a feminist reading? Or people with actual body hair, especially since there was a point of mentioning it in the monologue? Tattoos? Scars? Short hair? Disabilities? More racial diversity? (Again, the one woc was painted blue. And I feel shitty for thinking she was white but they could have included dark skinned people too.)  Introductions are done. The de-robing has happened. We now have three naked women sitting on a couch. Let’s read “feminist propaganda”! Some pretty typical stuff, Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, big names of the feminist movement. There was a reading of an MRA’s post from some MRA website. (Why are we giving MRA’s an audience at a FEMINIST reading?!) Intermission.  During intermission, I got up the courage to go speak to Hugo and mention why I was peeved at the start of the show with the women/men division of the audience. They shrugged and said “well it was a set up to a punch line” I smiled and replied, “I realize that but don’t you think trans folks are the punch line enough?” They tried to back track but it got awkward and I walked away. Hugo does some “feminist” trivia during the break. Throwing prize bags of tampons and chocolate to whoever shouts the correct answer. 

One question asks what does “SWERF” stand for. A woman yells the answer and Hugo repeats it back to the audience and says “Sex work exclusionary feminism isn’t feminism. Sex work is real work!” It would have been so easy to also educate about TERFs. They don’t. The irony is not lost on me. 

More trivia. I win one. I’m told, “Here enjoy these tampons!” I catch it and yell back, “Not all women have vaginas” I turn to the women at our table and say, “Hello, I don’t need tampons and I hate chocolate. Enjoy” They gladly accept. Back to the readings... A dramatic reading of Spice Girl lyrics. Some very heteronormative erotica. A reading of a radfem manifesto of the 70s (that included very acephobic commentary) And then, the woman painted as a MLP says she’s going to read Ivan E Coyote.  Now, for those of you who haven’t been blessed with reading their works or seeing Ivan perform (I just saw them again last week!), they are a trans writer from Canada. Very well known in LGBTQPIA circles. AMAZINGLY pure and moving stories and poems and “literary Doritos”. They are an amazing human being and have quickly become one of my favorite queer authors.  SO I AM STOKED!! This night has been so cishet heavy and I’m crank, I am READY to end it with Ivan. Ivan has written four of five books, has mountains of published poetry and she chooses to read a piece that is so personal to me. She prefaces this with a quick word about Ivan being an LGBTQ author. But fails to mention they’re a trans masculine person who identifies as a Tom Boy.  The piece starts out as a love letter to femmes who are often erased from Queer culture because they are “assumed” to be straight. But then turns to Ivan’s journey through figuring out they were trans and how they became jealous of femmes sometimes and how they will never be seen as who they are. How they will always be coming out of the closet over and over and over. Because their identity isn’t “visibly recognized” because it’s outside the binary.  I sob every time I hear this poem because it is so personal to me. The first time I heard it was when Ivan performed in Chch last August. I was in the midst of struggling with how the world saw me and this poem touched a part of me I thought no one would <i>ever</i> understand.  I sobbed again tonight. My flat mate patted my hand. She sobbed too for the same reasons. The journey to figuring out your identity can be so isolating, terrifying and lonely. But when you hear your story being told by someone who is on a stage, with an audience, talking as if your journey was the most normal and natural experience....it’s an emotional time.  After she finished, the performer stated “As a cis woman, I obviously do not identity with the narrator. I do however think this poem speaks to me as a femme. Because we are often overlooked.” (This gets cheers from the audience) I feel sick inside. This cis woman just spoke the very personal words of a trans person bearing their soul and claimed it as a poem for her.  No. You don’t get to do that. You don’t get to bend it to your whim. If you want to include poetry or stories about the trans experience, YOU FUCKING INCLUDE TRANS PERFORMERS.  Thank god the night was over.  My flat mate and I are sitting at our table deciding how to make our own event called “Naked Queers Reading” and how much better it would be. We’re minding our own business when out of the corner of my eye I see a crowd around the stage area.  Of course. There’s a man who has taken off his shirt to pose with the naked women so he can get his buddy to take his picture. Of fucking course there is. That’s when we left.  I don’t know if I am just lucky to live in such a comfortable Queer circle of friends that I’ve become blind to the world of heternormative, patriarchal bullshit or if I am truly too fucking cynical to go out in public...but fuck was I disappointed with tonight.  Anyway, if you made it through this entire post, thank you. I promise I’ll post a really lovely story about the library tomorrow. Right now I want to watch Ivan E Coyote performances on YouTube and drink my tea from my Unicorn Elixer mug.

A Positivity thing!

Alright, sure! Warning, this got to be the length of a goddamn manifesto because I fucking love talking. (See #3 lmao). I also just took adderall so my thought are all nicely lining up in an order that is easy for me to follow and describe. So I'm putting it behind a cut for courtesy's sake. And to do that I had to take a pic and pate it in bc answering has limited text options and does not allow readmores apparently? Tumblr is a functional website.

1- I am naturally good with animals! I've been like that as far as I can remember and it''s something that I didn't really realize wasn't universal until quite a bit later. Of course it's partially a learned skill, especially since different animals have different ways of communicating and can interpret the same gesture as calming or aggressive based on species. But the bottom line is that birds, cats, horses, even reptiles and arthropods really warm up to me pretty quickly. Dogs are something of an acception I don't think I'm any better than your average person at interacting with dogs, but that is a lack of experience thing. I've worked in animal shelters and vets offices, but I've never actually owned a dog so I'm not as confident with them, and they can tell obviously. Anyway I love animals and they tend to like me back which is pretty great all around.

2- I'm pretty funny? Sometimes? Idk I am a bit self conscious about claiming that I'm funny without y'know, proving it, since being funny really is really up to the people you're entertaining to decide, but my track record of laughs per joke ratio is Decently High I like to think. I also remember when exactly I decided I wanted to be funny.

My family was driving to a family reunion in Nebraska, from Texas. Which means driving up that column of absolutely empty boring bullshit states in between where there is nothing but fields of corn and soybeans. Forever. As with any family stuck in an enclosed space together for hours and hours of extremely boring driving, we'd gotten irritable and had some kind of fight. Namely between myself and my dad, which was a commonly recurring problem when I was younger. So now we are sitting a tense and upset silence, and my dad decides to take a stab at lightening the mood by pretending nothing is wrong. (This is his go to move, and it is very frustrating tbh >_>.) So he makes a one handed gesture at all the Fucking Farmland around us and says in a grandiose voice "Look kids, this is where All your Food comes from!" As if we had not been staring at fields and fields of corn for hours, and also as if we did not understand what farming was.

I stare out at the corn abyss, contemplate this statement for a long moment. And then reply, "What about fish?" Everyone absolutely broke down laughing. Me and my baby autistic brain had meant that as half a sincere question, half a skeptical jibe, but nope. It broke the tension and immediately put everybody in a good mood. At this point in my young life, (I was probably 6? maybe 7?), I was pretty used to being the angry disruptive kid prone to tantrums and generally Making Situations Worse, so this was a....sudden departure from that norm. A departure I /liked/. Eventually we all calmed down and conveniently we passed a verly clearly man made "lake". It was a perfect rectangle, and had a weird nondescript building attached to it. Dad pointed and excitedly defended his claim.

"See, fish right there, I told you."

My response, after careful consideration, this time with the real intent of being Funny once again,

"I think that's a sewage treatment plant."

Cue laughter. Cue baby determination to Understand this Humor Stuff and git gud. As mentioned earlier, I like to think I've done a pretty good job all in all.

3- I'm hella verbose. I used to be really self conscious about this one too, as I was ///really bad/// at noticing when people wanted me to stop talking and/or were trying to say something themselves. This was not just a childhood problem too, it has continued well into college and I still struggle with it sometimes. Ironically this gave me a tendency to befriend shy and naturally quiet people. This would go very well for a period of time, but the combination of shyness and obliviousness meant that on the occasions where they DID have something to say I just steamrolled over them. This problem would Fester until the friend in question would get fed up and cut ties. To me this was unexpected, to them it had been a mounting and more obvious problem that they were trying to convey to me and I just did not realize it.  

I've gotten much better over the years, and now really enjoy how effectively I can say what I mean. This also has made me really persuasive, which I use to my advantage as a self appointed LBGT+ educator as often as possible lmao. Once again I have a quick story about how I realized this, but it's shorter I promise.

Seventh grade, US history. We had a somewhat final project thing that was making a list of the 10 most crucial moments of American Independence, and then defending these choices to the class. I picked a somewhat unconventional 10, prepared my speech, and then gave it, about halfway through the presentations. The time for the q and a had arrived. I looked out at the students, (most of whom hated me for generic junior high school reasons), and expected to get torn into.

There was absolute silence. No one raised a single question. The teacher, (who was one of my favorites in that whole school to be honest), smiled and said, "Nobody has any questions? Everybody agrees with [girl name redacted]? So everybody's list looks exactly like that, huh?"

Evan, one of the few people who was Mildly Friendly towards me thanks to us both being percussionists in concert band said,

"Well it would NOW, if I got to change it."

4- Tough. I'm tough. I hesitate to say 'things don't bother me' because it's blatantly untrue given my fairly severe anger issues, but I don't get /insulted/ all that easily. I'm very much a 'who cares what other people think' kind of person. Not to say I disregard other's opinions, (although that definitely used to be the case oops), but I'm good at discerning like valuable critique from bullshit complaints. This is another trait I've had since time immemorial for me, and it's been pretty invaluable to me.

Being gay, trans, and overall weird in Texas in 2009 was not a picnic as it was, and I've seen how much much harder it could have been for me if I wasn't as resistant to mockery as I am. I like this about myself, and I like to think I /use/ it well. As often as I can I try and get myself in between bigotry/rudeness/ignorance and someone more vulnerable to being hurt by it. I can take the punches, get no bruises, and fire back with my previously established High Diplomacy Stat to really shut people down. This has been called by people other than me being 'brave' and 'courageous' but I always take a minor issue with that just because it doesn't feel like it has a /cost/ to me. It's not necessarily easy, but it's natural. It's not a matter of choosing to square up to something that intimidates me, but just using my natural immunity in a way that seems obvious.

5- And this one is sort of abstract in a way but, I've worked on myself. I've improved as a person. I'm still working to do so. I'm naturally very low empathy, morals confused and eluded me through much of my life. Compassion, respect, and plain old niceness do not come easy to me, but I've looked at myself and other people critically and made a commitment to trying to make people around me happier when I can. This is a trait I would accept being called brave for, but it's not one that ever gets that label. I admire people who this stuff comes to naturally, and I aspire to be someone who can help people who DO lack the innate understanding to learn the same way I have, (or whatever way works for them), how to understand why these concepts are important and worth pursuing.

WHEW okay sorry for the novel guys haha, but even if nobody gets all the way to the bottom of this it was really fun and uplifting to do. Thanks a ton for sending this ask my way, I'm very grateful.

im 19 and have had car insurance for 4 months or so. i had a bunch of money from working with my parents.( own their business). well there business is bad due to the economy. plus a month ago i injured my ankle bad and it still gets a little swollen if im on it for long periods of time. so i cant get a job unless its one where im sitting and there isn't much with just sitting. so i have been thinking of canceling my insurance till my ankle is better and get a job then. my question is how much will my insurance go up when i get it again? my parents are saying its bad too do but i don't see any other option. if i don't cancel it the insurance and gas will drain my bank account in a couple months and i wont have a choice but to cancel it...

I have a question regarding car insurance. I'm 29 years old. I've been in 3 car accidents but was not at fault for any of them (2 of the times my car was sitting still! lol) and I've never gotten a ticket for any of those accidents. I used to have insurance through State Farm, full coverage for a 2004 Jeep Liberty that cost 50-60 a month in upstate NY. While driving to NYC one winter I got a speeding ticket, my first ticket ever! I was going I think 82(?) in a 65. This was just before I moved to NYC, and because I got the ticket in a podunk little county I was driving through I had no idea what the name was, the ticket flew out my door and I lost it. I figured they would mail me something else to tell me the payment was late but I never received anything else about it. Well I found out later it was because I moved, even though I moved about 2 months after the fact they wait quite a while to send another notice, and I never received it. Thus, my license was suspended but I never knew. I never got caught driving without it either. So I moved here in 2007 with my Jeep which I was very behind payments for, and then it got towed away for alternate side parking BS. I could have borrowed the money back then to pay to get it out but I let it go. Alright so long story short, I don't have the truck, it was auctioned. I'll be done paying for it through a collection agency settlement offer this May. If I had kept the truck, I would be paying 200+ more a month than I pay now, and I wouldn't have been done paying it til August 2011. Plus I would have had to pay to catch it up the 3 months I was behind, plus pay my boyfriends brother back who was willing to lend me the money to get it out of the car jail (lol) I had the suspension lifted last July so I could rent a car, again no issues. So I'm thinking of buying a 2,000 car (cash! I learned my lesson) in June when I'm done paying for the truck and I want to get no fault insurance. I know it will be a lot more here then what I used to pay, and in addition I now have a suspension that wasn't there before. How much do you guys have to pay for your insurance, if it's not too much information to ask? And how much do you think mine might be, or compare your cost and history to mine? Thanks.""
