forgive me on possible poor wording on this post (suggestions and discussion are welcome and open) i'm really not feeling well right now and i struggle with articulating myself because of brainfog.

tumblr is an echo chamber but if you say that you're accused of being a fascist or whatever when it's just plainly and simply true. it's genuinely wonderful to have an online space dominated by autistic people and leftists but the disadvantages of such a space rear their head quite quickly when you think about it for more than five seconds.

(there is NOTHING inherently wrong with the way autistic people think vs allistic people think, merely i think a lot of us struggle with the same issues that can sometimes inhibit our understanding of the world around us and experiences different from our own)

autism being the norm is fun and cool until you try to explain the nuances of like, for example, online behavior. because i think a lot of us struggle with black or white thinking that goes unquestioned and it can lead to really unhealthy habits. like yeah terfs are shitty people and we should reject their ideas, but spending your spare time sending random people on the internet gore is really weird, is giving them more attention than they deserve, and is overall a waste of time that can't be good for your mental health. and if you explained to anyone offline that one of your hobbies is sending gore or suicide baiting people on the internet, even with those people being bigots, they will be weirded out. it's not healthy to put that much emotional energy into your oppressor. it's just weird. go for a walk or something, girl. i can't watch this.

i see so much mcelroy stuff on tumblr but have 0 other knowledge besides what's on my dash, where would i even start on getting into their content?

ok so idk how long this ask has been in my inbox (idk if i got a notification for it?) but i will try to answer your question as best i can! if you want a short answer, i first watched their “monster factory” youtube series, and then fell into the rabbit hole, so i feel like “monster factory” is a pretty lighthearted way to get into their humor. additionally, the 6 episode “my brother, my brother, and me” tv show would also be a pretty chill way to be introduced to their whole deal. however, i feel like this question necessitates a longer answer, since their content is so diverse. the rest of that answer is under the read more. i am very sorry for how long it is. i mean, it’s seriously long. but i hope it helps (if you decide to read it)!

so the mcelroy family of products got its start, pretty much, through a podcast called “my brother, my brother, and me” (or mbmbam or short), which is a “comedy advice podcast” where the three mcelroy brothers, justin, travis, and griffin, “answer” listener questions and yahoo answers questions (also sent in by listeners), generally by taking the concept and making jokes about it. mbmbam has a very significant back library (like each episode is around an hour and they’re on episode 380 now), so what i have done is watch a lot of animations and bits people have isolated on youtube to get sort of a “greatest hits” if you will. some quality bits: “sleep jeans”, “glass shark”, “three deep on the window”, “SHRIMP! HEAVEN! NOW!”, and “hatsune miku”, among many many others. also, they made a 6 episode mbmbam tv series, which is free to watch on vrv.com! that’s a pretty light way to get into them tbh

another podcast the mcelroys do, which you’ve probably seen a lot of on your dash (especially from me, sorry), is “the adventure zone”. this is a podcast where justin, travis, and their dad clint mcelroy play dungeons and dragons, guided by griffin, the dm. now idk what you’ve seen, but i bet at least some of it discusses how emotional and heart-wrenching it is. however, if/when you click play on episode 1, you’re gonna be like “huh? this is the emotional shit they’re talking about?” but trust me, it gets better as it goes on. it also gets better as it goes in terms of representation! again, it starts out pretty basic, very male-heavy, but as the series continues, the amount of female characters increases exponentially, and there’s some good lgbt representation as well, including at least 2 canon gay relationships and a trans woman main character! so if you like fantasy adventure that’s honestly pretty light on the fantasy sometimes, and getting emotionally involved with a group of characters who call themselves “tres horny boys”, then this is the podcast for you.

finally, i’ll touch on their youtube endeavors at polygon. polygon is a video game journalism website where both justin and griffin work, and this website also has a youtube channel that uploads some humor/let’s play (ish) content. justin and griffin both star in “monster factory”, which is a series where they create characters in video games that look ridiculous and create a fiction around them and play the games for a short period of time, often using mods or console commands to fuck the games up in addition to the characters. monster factory was my introduction to the mcelroys, and if you’d like a lighthearted way to ease into their humor, this is a good start. some good episodes: the fallout 4 series, their “second life, second chances” series (and the original second life episode), their spore series, and the black desert online episode. also, griffin has been the sole star of a couple very good series, including his pokemon y nuzlocke run, and his pacifist endeavors in world of warcraft called “peacecraft”

Just kidding, but it did start when I was a junior in high school. I was kinda scrolling through tumblr, as one would do, and I saw that one of my friends (one that I actually knew in real life and had classes with) was posting asexual things. I got curious, so I tried looking things up. Now, I live in a fairly conservative town. Not that people are blatantly homophobic or anything, but it wasn’t diversity central either (we are aptly nicknamed Vanilla Valley), so I hadn’t had much exposure to the lgbt+ community beyond gay people and the vague idea of trans people. I got really confused about what I was seeing, so I asked my friend what the word asexual meant. Somehow, in the process of trying not to look like an insensitive asshole, I ended up on a website that had the different ace identities. The word demisexual was on there, but I largely ignored it, since my friend is sex-repulsed ace and that’s more what I was interested in learning about.

That was my first time seeing the word, but something must have struck a cord with me, since I ended up kind of toying around with the idea of being asexual in some capacity. I even mentioned that to my mom (she promptly told me I wasn’t allowed to be asexual). In the end, I kind of discarded that idea since I was aware that I wasn’t completely opposed to the idea of sex. Time skip to when I was a freshman in college (I’ll be a sophomore in the fall). 

I had a few friends that I would get dinner with after lab, both of whom were in a relationship. I asked them how they met their respective boyfriends, and the conversation turned too, of all things, some of the kink they tried. We were all laughing and stuff, but, I don’t know, I just felt off. I couldn’t get it out of my head. I got back to my room, pulled out my laptop, and googled the word demisexual. I read about some of the common demisexual experiences and I was a little shell shocked. I told myself not to panic, so I made a list. Ways I was demisexual and ways that I wasn’t. The way that I wasn’t had one item. The was the was had somewhere close to fifteen (fifteen that I was willing to admit at the time, at least). So I messaged a different friend on tumblr who mentioned that she was demisexual and asked her about it. We talked for a while, and something clicked with me. When I woke up the next morning, I dived into the tag and was sorely disappointed. I wasn’t “out” to anyone yet, so I couldn’t make any posts on my main blog. I decided that I needed a healthy outlet for some of feelings. so I created this blog. That was that.

Over the course of the next several months, I kept up a sort of informal diary. It is strictly related to the demi stuff and helps me organize my thoughts. In retrospect, I never acted like you would expect a straight person to act. There was a lot of posturing on my end so that I would appear “normal.” Looking back has only strengthened what I already know. 

Okay, like, one time, all these kids on the bus were asking if I was gay. Which my response was totally not “why are you even asking me that” and was more along the lines of “what??? No???? I totally love guys. I’m super into dick.” Which. Come on. A guy asked me out once and I panicked so bad I ran away from him. Clearly I was convince both myself and the other people. But also, I never made any moves on anyone regardless of gender. I was always joking about some fake boyfriend I had. Everyone knew it was fake, which was the funny part, but wouldn’t someone else just joke about their crush? Yeah, didn’t have one of those. The last true and proper crush I had was in sixth grade and one day I decided I didn’t want to have a crush, so I promptly stopped all my feelings. Again, not something that a totally straight person would do. Like? Who just wakes up and decides “yeah, not in the mood to have a crush anymore. I’m over this.” and just be done like that unless they’re ace and trying to force attraction that isn’t there? 

Just looking back, there are so many little moments that were clearly me being vibrantly asexual. So if you have any of those little moments where you just feel out of the loop or are trying to convince other people of your attraction, you’re probably ace or demi in some way. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable talking about sex unless I intitate the conversation. In the same vein, I don’t like seeing sex, or even kissing, on tv or in movies. And I only like reading about it if I feel the characters have a deep enough connection AND I have been thoroughly warned in advance about the content. I need time to prepare myself or it makes me real uncomfortable real fast. Maybe that happens to you. Maybe not. And anyway, your lack of experience could be an indicator of your ace-ness. I mean, I’m 19 and I haven’t ever gone on a date. Not for lack of opportunity, but more because I just never really had the drive beyond a vague, abstract idea about what a hypothetical boyfriend would be like.

I have a question regarding car insurance. I'm 29 years old. I've been in 3 car accidents but was not at fault for any of them (2 of the times my car was sitting still! lol) and I've never gotten a ticket for any of those accidents. I used to have insurance through State Farm, full coverage for a 2004 Jeep Liberty that cost 50-60 a month in upstate NY. While driving to NYC one winter I got a speeding ticket, my first ticket ever! I was going I think 82(?) in a 65. This was just before I moved to NYC, and because I got the ticket in a podunk little county I was driving through I had no idea what the name was, the ticket flew out my door and I lost it. I figured they would mail me something else to tell me the payment was late but I never received anything else about it. Well I found out later it was because I moved, even though I moved about 2 months after the fact they wait quite a while to send another notice, and I never received it. Thus, my license was suspended but I never knew. I never got caught driving without it either. So I moved here in 2007 with my Jeep which I was very behind payments for, and then it got towed away for alternate side parking BS. I could have borrowed the money back then to pay to get it out but I let it go. Alright so long story short, I don't have the truck, it was auctioned. I'll be done paying for it through a collection agency settlement offer this May. If I had kept the truck, I would be paying 200+ more a month than I pay now, and I wouldn't have been done paying it til August 2011. Plus I would have had to pay to catch it up the 3 months I was behind, plus pay my boyfriends brother back who was willing to lend me the money to get it out of the car jail (lol) I had the suspension lifted last July so I could rent a car, again no issues. So I'm thinking of buying a 2,000 car (cash! I learned my lesson) in June when I'm done paying for the truck and I want to get no fault insurance. I know it will be a lot more here then what I used to pay, and in addition I now have a suspension that wasn't there before.
