“Her ocean eyes. Her glowing smile. Her fierceness and defiance. And woman, did I ever sing, weep and dance ever so close to another held by the rhythm of your words and music! I know life was hard. I know you suffered. We hold you, your talent and the echoes of your ethereal voice within us. No one will ever compare to you Sinead. Watch over us sister…”

I'd like to just take a moment to honor Sinéad O'Connor who passed away this week. I don't particularly care if Ms. O'Connor was nuttier than a squirrel turd. I always try to separate the artist from their work... and this one's work was legendary, folks. She was serious about her craft, she had an incredible vocal tool set, and she helped to change the stage for women in modern music by not only possessing an interesting look, but also a razor-sharp intelligence and a penchant for being something of an edge lady. Here's Fire on Babylon, my very favorite tune by her, from 1994's Universal Mother. Godspeed into immortality Sinéad! Hopefully you and Tina Turner are performing shows together in the ten-for-a-dollar bin we know as the afterlife!
Another lady legend down in 2023 folks! Everything about this woman was untraditional, and that was kind of the whole point. She burned many bridges in her career and was basically ostracized for BEING counterculture. Just goes to show; just because you go against the grain... it doesn't mean you'll go out anything short of iconic in the end. Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stipe and more pay tribute to Sinéad O’Connor
On Wednesday, as the news of Sinéad O’Connor’s death broke, many celebrities took to social media to pay tribute to the music icon.
As reported by Irish broadcaster RTE earlier in the day, O’Connor’s death was confirmed by a family statement. No cause of death was immediately available.
“I hope you are at peace,” actor Caitríona Balfe wrote on her Instagram page, adding “and with your baby boy. Thank you for sharing your soul with us and soothing us with your incredible voice beautiful Sinéad.”
O’Connor contributed her vocals to the opening credits of Season 7 of acclaimed series “Outlander,” in which Balfe stars. The actor’s mention of O’Connor’s “baby boy” was in reference to the singer’s son Shane, who died by suicide at age 17 in 2022.
Michael Stipe, famed REM singer-songwriter, simply wrote on Instagram aongside a photo of him with O’Connor that “there are no words.” Stipe has spoken about how much he was influenced by O’Connor, telling the Washington Post in a 2020 interview that “so many people have lifted from her, from me to Miley Cyrus. She’s one of our great, living icons.”
Belinda Carlisle, lead vocalist of the all-girls 80s rock band The Go-Gos, wrote “may she find peace now. Forever loved,” on her Twitter page on Wednesday, while singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge wrote on her page that news of O’Connor’s death “is such a tragedy.”
“What a loss. She was haunted all her life. What a talent,” Etheridge continued. “I remember my first Grammy show meeting this small shy Irish girl.”
The Cranberries – who lost their lead singer, the Irishwoman Dolores O’Riordan, in 2018 – shared a tribute on their official Instagram account, writing that they “are shocked and saddened to hear of Sinead’s sudden passing. We have all been big fans for many years. Our thoughts are with her family.”
Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage, posted in honor of O’Connor to the band’s Instagram page, writing, “I’m heartbroken.”
“This disgusting world broke her and kept on breaking her. Godspeed dear fragile dove,” the post continued. “Thank you for all the beauty and all the wise teachings you offered up to us. I wish you nothing but peace and I will love you for all of time.”
O’Connor’s contemporary Annie Lennox shared a poem in the late singer’s memory on her Instagram, beginning it with, “You bared your soul… | Shared your brilliance | Through exquisite artistry”.
Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis penned a lengthy tribute to O’Connor on her Instagram page, saying, “I once heard Sìnead (sic) sing acapella in an empty chapel in Ireland. It was under construction at the private home of our host. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard in my life.”
“I loved her. Her music. Her life,” Curtis added, going on to reminisce about the time she spent with O’Connor at a music festival.
“Sixth Sense” actor Toni Collette also shared a personal memory with O’Connor, writing on Instagram, “I was lucky enough to hang out with her a few times in my twenties. On one occasion we all sang in the hills of Wicklow in Eire. I sang a Jane Siberry song and Sinead then asked/encouraged me to sing one of my own. Can you imagine the terror? The intimidation? The thrill?!”
“She was so talented, so generous, humble, resilient, courageous and true,” Collette continued. “What a voice. What a force. My heart breaks.”
Beyond those in the arts, O’Connor’s impact was felt in her home country of Ireland.
“What Ireland has lost at such a relatively young age is one of our greatest and most gifted composers, songwriters and performers of recent decades, one who had a unique talent and extraordinary connection with her audience, all of whom held such love and warmth for her,” Irish president Michael D. Higgins said in a statement sent to CNN.
“May her spirit find the peace she sought in so many different ways,” his statement concluded.

Sinéad O'Connor Remembers Startling Encounter with Prince
By Jeff Nelson Published on May 26, 2021 08:00AM EDT
Sinéad O'Connor is opening up about a startling encounter she says she had with Prince.
In her new memoir Rememberings (out June 1), the Irish singer-songwriter lays bare her life, from an abusive childhood to her rise and fall from grace — and all the sex, drugs and rock and roll in between.
In an exclusive excerpt from the book, the Irish singer-songwriter writes about a night she spent with the late music legend.
The stars didn't know each other when she recorded his song "Nothing Compares 2 U." Here, O'Connor recalls the evening they later spent at his house after Prince invited her to "hang out."
Looking back now, "It certainly didn't change my opinion of him as an artist, which was the only opinion I could have had. I never knew him otherwise," O'Connor, 54, tells PEOPLE of the encounter. "Obviously, I came away not liking him very much and not particularly wanting to go around to see him again. But having said that, though, I won't lie. I didn't like the man."
Prince died in 2016, at the age of 57, of an accidental overdose on fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine.
Despite her strange encounter with icon, O'Connor says his death affected her deeply.
"I sobbed when he died," O'Connor says. "I just felt terribly sorry and sad for him of the loneliness of his death. The price you pay for being so successful is an awful, aching loneliness, and I think he was terribly lonely, terribly vulnerable. The loneliness of fame, I think, was his undoing."

After performing “Nothing Compares to U” on Sunday, the singer became the first artist to call for a ceasefire in Gaza at a major awards show this year.
“Artists for a ceasefire. Peace in the world,” Lennox said with her fist in the air, as an image of O’Connor displayed in the background.
Fans celebrated the Eurythmics icon for making the bold statement and honoring O’Connor in the “most meaningful and honest way.” O’Connor, who was also known for speaking up, famously ripped an image of the Pope to call out the Catholic church’s approach to clergy child sex abuse while performing on Saturday Night Live in 1992.
Several other artists joined on the calls for peace in Gaza on the Grammys red carpet. The members of Boygenius — Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker — wore pins with the logo for Artists Call for Ceasefire Now, the name of a petition sent to Joe Biden and signed by numerous musicians and actors. Esperanza Spalding showed her support for Palestine as well by wearing a kaffiyeh.

Hey, UT Press. The alumni association always be booty-calling me for moolah. Next time Austin's literary clique cites my work, call me before y'all sow homophobia where it don't exist.
“Why Sinéad O'Connor Matters,” by Allyson McCabe. Page 207. Michelle Shocked, once a lesbian icon, reemerged as an avowed homophobe. For a recap, see Daniel Kusner, “Dallas-born alt-rocker Michelle Shocked makes few apologies for 'epic exploit,'” Dallas Morning News, July 1, 2017...
