If you were the one writing the Mario Movie sequel (which you should've since you've practically created you own lore and are such good at it), what would you want the plot synopsis/basic story idea to be?

A few months after Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser and save their home, just as everything is calming down and their plumbing business is looking up, Kamek suddenly reappears in The Mushroom Kingdom, and he is not alone.

With him are seven young warmongering Koopas known simply as “The Koopalings,” and together with what remains of Bowser’s army they attack The Mushroom Kingdom to free their king, capturing Princess Peach and taking over her castle in the process. Mario, Luigi, and Toad are quickly overwhelmed, and narrowly manage to flee down a warp pipe before it is destroyed behind them.

In the Brooklyn sewers, Mario and Luigi search the underground for another working warp pipe that might lead them back to The Mushroom Kingdom. During this search, they stumble upon a lost baby Yoshi; a friendly little guy with an enormous appetite.

Eventually, after many hours of searching the Brooklyn underground, Mario and company finally succeed in finding a working warp pipe. The downside?: it transports them to the opposite side of the world from The Mushroom Kingdom. well, thing is, modern plumbing is like. really hard to make. we take it for granted but it's,,, a lot of work lol

It'd have been nice if I could build a modern sewage system in each household where they can directly throw their waste. But he didn't have the technology to do so and lacked money, time and labor. A bitter smile appeared on Lloyd's face as he looked at the ongoing construction. To be honest, he wanted to create a modern sewage system, just like the one in South Korea, if he could. It would allow the water used at homes to pass through the sewers and the people to flush their toilets. Clean and sleek. Lloyd wanted to devise a method wherein people could deal with the waste without extra effort or care. But that's impossible here. To construct a modern sewage system, Lloyd had to connect the residential facility with underground pipes. But the current situation made it impossible for him to do so. Soon, the freezing winter would turn the Prona River into a giant block of ice. The accumulated bodily waste there signaled a large-scale epidemic. So, the sewers had to be constructed before the plague, leaving Lloyd no time to build and connect houses with pipes. He would need at least several years to perfect such a thorough system.

again! modern plumbing is a bit of a marvel of engineering! implementing it in a fantasy world without any of the technological advantages of the modern world would've been pretty hard! and lloyd is not even a civil engineer, he was just studying to become one! the fact he managed to build a sewage system that worked as well as it did in such a relatively short amount of time is already goddamn amazing.

There's not a lot of information about the sewers in Baldur's Gate I've noticed.

So I'm going to give my thoughts. Most of this will be headcanon because again - there isn't much about the sewers that I can find.

Based on BG3 - NOTE: Sewers are in Act 3 so there are going to be spoilers. I am also writing this from memory:

Kobolds maintain the sewers, if I'm recalling right they are in a guild and I think in the game were on strike.

There is a sluice gate that is controlled by heat and water pressure (and is the most annoying puzzle in the entire game).

There are slimes, oozes, and mephits living down there.

The Guild has a headquarters in the sewers.

It is suggested that there is access to the Szarr palace from the sewers, even though the player cannot use this entrance.

There is also access to the temple under the Szarr palace from the sewer.

Access to the Undercity+Bhaal's temple is here as well.

There is a portion of the sewer that seems to have lots of plants and may have some sun access.

Somewhere there is access to the Underdark - but is never actually shown in game.

While there are a couple of outhouses in Act 2, toilets are not shown anywhere else that I saw - I am assuming the developers simply didn't go through the process of building them in-game and not that there aren't toilets.

Pipes, pumps, and plumbing exist in-universe. In fact you can talk to people who are trying to get water from one of the fountains and it isn't working.

Other things I've found that aren't in the game - not putting in links because Tumblr hates when I do that:

There is access to what is called the Undercellar in the sewers. It is a network of chambers and cellars housing a sleazy tavern and feasthall spanning under the Upper City and the Wide with multiple access points - one of which is in The Blushing Mermaid, and another in the Duchal Palace.

You can find gray oozes, green slimes, mustard jellies, ochre jellies ghasts, ghouls, phase spiders, a tribe of kobolds led by one called Ratchild, a sentient olive slime named Schlumpsh with devoted sewerfolk followers, sewerfolk I guess, rats, and on occasion gelatinous cubes.

At one point there apparently was an ogre mage who domesticated carrion crawlers to get rid of the bodies of his robbery victims - so I guess carrion crawlers are a possibility too.

There is kind of a purification system in place - it is located in the Seatower district and is a tower complex called Sewer Keep that treats and purify the waste that left the city's sewer system before emptying it out into the River Chionthar.

Headcanons:

Not directly related to the sewers but Jaheira makes an offhand comment in the epilogue about rebuilding even though "the next dragon attack" could take out part of the city - or something along those lines - but it makes me think the city rebuilds parts of the city maybe not regularly, but often enough that people joke about it. So I feel a good portion of the city would have more "modern" (for them) amenities.

Chamber pots were used during times when sewers did not exist as the solution for what to do with waste. Rural areas, small towns, and the Outer City districts lacking a sewer system would still use these - but not major cities like Baldur's Gate.

Meaning I feel most people, especially those in newer or more recently rebuilt parts of the city, will have some kind of actual toilet that empties into the sewer - though they probably have to flush by pouring water down it.

I do think most of the Outer City will not have sewer access except for Blackgate and maybe Rivington. Blackgate because it is used by merchants coming in from Waterdeep and is right up against the Upper City, Rivington because it also is what visitors see first when they enter the city.

Wyrm's Crossing absolutely does not have a sewer and a good chunk of people dump their chamber pots into the Chionthar river below - the city discourages this.

I imagine there's a small population of gelatinous cubes in the main city's sewer, but is kept in check thanks to everything else that is in the sewers.

The city more than likely hires adventurers from time to time to 'clean out' the sewers of monsters. I feel most cities with large sewer systems would do this.

There are other hidden buildings and temples under Baldur's Gate, but because sanitation workers/architects have a will to live most days, if they come across something like that, they leave it be. This is also why they hire kobolds for much of the maintenance and cleaning.

The Guild has a significant amount of control over the sewer - both over those that live in the sewer as well as in the political/architectural control over it.

The sewer sees a significant amount of traffic due to the Guild, secret societies, hidden temples, adventurers, and people who need/want to meet secretly that - unless some kind of peace keeper catches you - no one is going to bat an eye when they see someone entering or exiting the sewer.

The sewer is a bit of a labyrinth, but those that live down there have made up a code system that they can scratch/paint on walls to help navigate.

The capital city was nearly complete. It would need proper plumbing and an electrical grid installed...but that was labor for another day. Sewers had already been put into place and thankfully, Vine had the foresight to make sure that a waste generator kept just in case. It would not be able to handle all of the waste that would inevitably come while the plumbing was set up, but it would stem the flow at least, and a pump room to store the excess. For now, the buildings were becoming complete...Grecian villas and cobbled streets, warmed with hearths. She had not been down to begin lighting them, but apparently it was no issue.

The Erinyes had adopted the flambastic skills of their blood donor, and lit the fires themselves, glowing with blue flame. And just as warm.

All other issues were slowly being addressed. Heresy was still too dark and cold to house a normal ecosystem, but with her nephews put to the task to make brighter stars and hardier vegetation, in time this place would develop its own strains for imports and exports. As building demands dwindled, reduced to simply building empty villages, the fiends had begun growing experimental. The early statues left something to be desired...but Vine found they had an abstract beauty to them. Something that could only come from the mind of a fiend.

"My Queen."

Vine looked over her shoulder.

For a giant, Cronos was quite stealthy. Everyone could hear his footsteps echoing over the Ring, but it had become like the chime of a clock. And with such darkness, he could appear out of nowhere.

"Cronos." Vine greeted, turning around. She had come to inspect the final touches on the city, and was pleased with the result. "Has Styx grown satisfied with the flow of her river?"

"Not yet." Cronos shook his great big head slowly. "She wishes to climb higher, and make waterfalls from the taller peaks."

"Would that Megaera and the girls could carry her up. But they loathe getting wet." Vine tsked. "She'll simply have to find the strength to climb on her own."

"There is something else."

Vine raised an eyebrow.

"We wish to know what the city's name will be."

Vine almost had an answer. It had sat on the tip of her tongue. New Witchholm.

But she stopped short. A wave of homesickness, long repressed, came rushing back. She had not seen Witchholm in months. She had seen her girls grow discontented, angry, and eventually break the terms of their contracts without her to enforce them. They were fueled by anger at Rakesh's reign....something that likewise gave Vine pause.

She had meant to name the new city after her home. But....there were no witches here. And there likely never would be.

She wasn't even sure if she could go home, even after her exile was lifted. Rakesh ruled the Emerald Tower now, and though it would give him trouble in the coming days, she could not bind the Tower of Heresy to it as she had before. Not without proper ownership. And given what was going on with him-

Cronos's question had accidentally opened a painful understanding that exile or not....she may very well be stuck here forever.

"My Queen?"

Cronos prodded. Vine sighed.

Well. New Witchholm was out. Which left-

"Dis."

"Dis?"

Vine nodded. A name stolen from the author that had predicted the Ring's creation. "The City of Dis. That will be its name." She decided. "Was there anything else?"

"....no My Queen." Cronos shook his head. "May the rest of us name the villages? They are only small ones."

"That's fine. Did you get that special building set up where I asked you?"

"It is nearly complete."

"Then that's all well by me. Name everything else as you wish. The Tower of Heresy and the City of Dis will what I name."

Cronos bowed, and stalked off into the dark, the echo of his footsteps like the ticking of a great, slow clock.

Vine looked over the city....now Dis, and gave a heavy breath. "Well. The jokesters will laugh at it." She admitted. "But I am a sucker for the classics."

100 Palettes Challenge // Palette #20 // The City That Never Sleeps

Today's palette comes from a The House Beautiful magazine cover by Maurice Day published in 1919.

I don't think this is my best work in this travel poster series. I severely overestimated my patience to draw windows onto the buildings, and underestimated how unfinished the whole piece would look without them. Maybe someday I'll go back and add the windows in.

But regardless, this is what's done now!

When I was trying to decide what to do with the last palette, I realized that there was one more home state that I hadn't done: New York. Both sides of my family are from Brooklyn, I was originally born in Brooklyn, and New York City played a huge role in my upbringing in general. I don't know that there are any actual cryptids unique to NYC, but there was one particular urban legend that went around a lot while I was growing up: Alligators in the sewers.

See, roundabouts the '80s, baby alligators were really popular pets. They were unique, about the size of an iguana, and at least seemingly pretty low-maintenance. If you ever watched Clarissa Explains It All back in the day on Nickelodeon, you probably remember her having a pet baby alligator she named Elvis and that she kept in a wading pool full of sand in her bedroom. The problem is that alligators don't stay the size of an iguana and they are predators that can be extremely dangerous.

So once the alligator got too big, the vast majority of owners got rid of them. Some of them were given to animal rescues or rehab organizations; some of them were given to reptile breeders; and some of them were gotten rid of in less savory ways.

When you hear about alligators being captured in rivers and lakes where they're not native? Those are typically alligators that used to be pets and were just released into the wild when they got too big and/or dangerous. In NYC, that very real story was turned into a bit of an absurd urban legend. The legend goes that NYC alligator pet owners, when their alligators got too big, they decided to just flush them down the toilet like a dead fish, and all of the alligators that survived the flushing ended up in the sewers under the city where they thrive on a diet of rats and the occasional unfortunate sanitation worker.

Obviously this isn't true. As many experts have pointed out over the years, even if people did try to flush an alligator down the toilet, pre-2000's plumbing wouldn't have been able to handle even a baby alligator, nevermind one that grew big enough to make their owner decide to get rid of it. There also simply haven't been any verified reports which, considering how many sanitation workers have been down in the sewers over the years, there would have to be at least one.

But it is a silly little story from back when NYC was allowed to be weird, and I think I heard at some point that it was part of the inspiration for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Though maybe that's an urban legend too.

Chapter Fifteen: Love Like You Pt. 3

Lust simply watched Envy leave the apartment before heading for the kitchen to make a cup of tea to lower her nerves. The water flowed into the sink as the faucet was switched on, unfortunately, a rancid smell of filthy fur radiated from the water that came out. About as soon as the water was turned on, it was switched off without hesitation by Lust who was gagging from the sulphuric smell. Had something gone wrong with the cover up or was it Sloth retaliating over having to help with the cover up? Lust shuddered as she started making her way to the door, taking Gluttony with her for a quick Envy retrieval for the water. As Lust and Gluttony made their way to the apartment, Envy was relaxing on the couch as Hughes tutored Freddy through the journals. Dorian was taking a nap in his new train shaped bed Envy got for him as a reward for committing the crime of assault with a dangerous animal. Dolly was peacefully on the phone, talking to the family over how things were going with the Hughes family and if they needed anything to be shipped up to them. Dolly was smiling, feeling a bit free now that she was able to walk around without having her glamor on twenty four seven after Envy let everyone know what she looked like. Overall, it was an eerily peaceful and quiet day for all in the apartment, that was until Lust came in.

 “Envy, the water is rancid.” Lust blurted out as she came inside with Gluttony, freaking out a little over if this was all over the place. “What?” Envy looked lazily over from the couch, annoyed that their rest was interrupted. “The Water, it’s rancid smelling. Is it the same with your apartment?” Lust explained as she went over to the kitchen sink.

 “Shit, it better be Sloth messing with us.” Envy, getting up from the couch, make their way over to the kitchen to Lust and inadvertently, Dolly gagging at the awful smell coming out. “Okay ruling out Sloth.” Lust shut the sink off, now knowing it wasn’t Sloth being petty.

 “Right, now what are we going to do about the abhorrent water situation?” Envy asked as they went to pat Dolly on the back after being made to suffer that smell. “First, we order carts of water bottles to keep the residents out of our business and figure out what’s going on with the water system.” Lust instructed, not wanting people to find out about the wall mummies and going into hysterics. “Damn it, it better not be a mummy in the water tank.” Freddy moaned in horror of possibly showering in corpse water.

 “I was careful when I was incinerating the corpses during the week, there shouldn’t have been a stray body left.” Hughes reassured as he got up from the table, ready to assist with the water situation. “I’m betting it's a rat, sometimes they can squeeze in there.” Dorian grinned as to make Freddy gag at the thought of rat water instead after waking up.

 “Joel, I’ll have to come back to you later, a plumbing situation has come up and we need to make some calls.” Dolly quickly said as she hung up the phone before picking it back up again to hand over to Envy.

 Envy quickly went to make the call to the local grocery store to order up packs of bottled waters to be delivered over to the apartment complex as Dolly went to standby Freddy. With the promised waters being on their way to the apartments, Envy made their way to the door, shapeshifting into the landlord to handle the residences who had likely discovered the disgusting water issue. Damage control needed to be done, Envy wasn’t about to risk a possible exposure should one of the humans decide to venture into the basement. Lust leaned against the wall as she pondered over how this filthy water situation even happened in the first place. Everything was done so carefully, everything had been handled to their best abilities, just how did this even happen in the first place? A thought finally came to Lust as she realized something. The passageway to the sewers was in the basement, could something from there made its way into the building? It wasn’t too hard of a thing to even happen either given the heat vision vaporizations that had been done. It could’ve loosen the passage door and the rats could’ve gone in, filthy rats that plagued the homunculi for many a good year. 

 “Dolly, Envy told me that your home has a monster in it that does pest control, right?” Lust asked as she decided the monster route was the better one to take.

 “Snickerdoodle? Well yes, like any hamster, he’s extremely territorial and aggressive towards other rodents.” Dolly raised an eyebrow at the sudden inquiry about the dread beast Snickerdoodle. “Good, I’ll be requiring Snickerdoodle if it turns out that we have a rat infestation.” Lust gave a look of relief at the fact that they don’t need the specialized rat traps this time around. “What did those poor rats ever do to you!? They’re adorable and smart creatures!” Freddy protested, not wanting to terrorize innocent rats with the eldritch horror that was Snickerdoodle.

 “Domesticated rats, sure those I can understand, but not these rats. These rats are horrific little monsters that have plague carrying fleas on them. We would like to make sure they’re good and slaughtered before the fleas can get loose.” Lust gave Freddy a look at having to explain that their rats were in fact plague carriers rather than the average rat. “...Okay we’ll have to fit Snickerdoodle with a flea collar…Tanya is going to get a kick out of seeing that.” Dolly interjected as the thought of the plague being spread took top priority immediately over Freddy’s love for rodents. “Tanya is the only one other than you and I that still adores Snickerdoodle even if he’s a horrible hideous monster.” Freddy admitted as he looked for a place to get Snickerdoodle situated properly.

 “He’s not that terrible looking, the multiple beady eyes are rather endearing once you get used to them.” Dolly shrugged as she prepared herself to have the conversation of having Joel capture Snickerdoodle for them. “I’m going to regret requesting the assistance of Snickerdoodle, aren’t I?” “Well you lived with Envy for god knows how long, you should be alright with a multi eyed and multi limbed monster hamster if not prefer the monster hamster a whole lot more.” Freddy snarkily responded as he emptied the coat closet to fit Snickerdoodle’s makeshift enclosure should the monster arrive.

 “Lust…that’s a dog…I smell dog..” Gluttony interrupted as he ran the water to get a good sniff at it.

 “Gluttony no don’t drink that water!” Lust nearly tripped over herself trying to get to Gluttony before he made the dread mistake of drinking the filthy water. “Wait, dog? What do you mean it’s a dog?” Hughes finally spoke, realizing that they may not be dealing with a rat problem.

 “Yes, dog, it smells like wet dog fur. Very filthy, it’s gross, it’s so gross.” Gluttony explained as Lust composed herself after being given the news that it’s likely a dog down there.
