Kelce is an athlete, and there have always been dozens upon dozens of children's non-fiction books about athletes. As if I didn't own like eight books about famous figure skater Michelle Kwan as a kid, because I certainly did.
Kids look up to athletes, often because they are young athletes themselves. Amazon shows at least twenty children's books alone dedicated to Simone Biles (including a Little Golden Book biography), for example. And for her in specific, I think that's fine. She's an admirable person and kids could have much worse as a role model.
I agree that they're probably trying to market to baby Taylor fans by including her, but if you think 'books about athletes' is something that wasn't already big when you were seven, I'm guessing it's just because it wasn't something you were interested in. There was a whole Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine with pullout posters released every month. It's also often an effective way to get young boys to read, as they're well known to be a harder target audience to appeal to when it comes to books. But they already like sports so...
The primary audience for this book is 'kids who like football.' Taylor being included is just a bonus to bring in some Swiftie bucks.
And while he's not an athlete, and pop stars didn't tend to get as many books, I'm sure there was a children's book about Justin Timberlake too.

sorry to be a pissant but the level of celebrity worship we're at right now is truly beyond the pale like why is there a little golden book about travis kelce man. every time I go to a book store there are 5000000 books of the most nonsense fluff about this woman and other ultra famous celebrities trying to ride that religious worship to easy money. like this pisses me off so much for no reason it's just so vapid and ridiculous. imagine if someone made a little golden book about justin timberlake when I was seven

Strange book series
*shakes head* So, if someone with a weird pen name self-publishes a series of over thirty "biographies" ranking from Simone Biles to Jean-Michel Jarre to Steve McQueen, as far as I can see none of them more than 70 pages, all of them self-published within the last two months... does someone else smell "AI-generated"? Because I do, very strongly. Shame, really, I would have loved a real ChriKra biography.

Book Review of Flying High: The Story of Gymnastics Champion Simone Biles
Tumblr media
Genre: Biography, Sports (Gymnastics), African-American History
Audience: PreK-5th Grade
Medium: Physical Book
Summary: Flying High tells the story of Simone Biles, a highly decorated Olympian for gymnastics. Readers will be inspired by her humble beginnings as a foster child to being known as the world's greatest gymnast.
Justification: My local library included this book on a diverse non-fiction booklist that they had recently put out. I found that it was a timely book to read as the Olympics are this year, and Simone Biles will be competing once again. Lastly, when I was growing up there was a lack of picture books that featured Black girls, so now I try to read and support whatever I can find now.
Evaluation of Illustrations: Ebony Glenn's illustrations are bright and draw the reader's eyes. There are a limited amount of illustrations that take use of the full page. Instead, Glenn's style is to show little vignettes. This decision made certain aspects of the story lack. That said, the two pages Glenn uses to show Simone doing her signature move was a great addition.
Evaluation of Writing: Michelle Meadows chose to do rhyming verses to tell Simone's story. This decision makes the story flow smoothly. It also makes it an easy book to be read aloud. It was refreshing to read how Meadows didn't only focus on Simone's successes and instead mentioned when she failed and how she persevered. This choice makes it so that not only is this book a biography, it is also a story on resilience.
Evaluation of Programming Potential: Flying High would be a great addition to any read aloud program done this summer. Since the Olympics are this year, it would be a good idea to teach young readers about some of the athletes. Also, as Simone is Black, this book conveys that anyone regardless of race can follow their dreams. An activity tie in can be to teach attendees how to do rhythmic ribbon dancing, a category of gymnastics. Another activity may be to have the young readers discuss a time they failed and how they overcame it.

Gymnastics books fly off the shelves in our library, and this one about the legendary gymnast Simone Biles just came in! The kids are going to adore it. Warm, joyful, gorgeous illustrations pair with poetry to create a biography in verse that beautifully tracks the highs and lows of Simon's life. After every setback, she rises again to pursue her passion, her family and supporters with her always. The spare text doesn't give much detail (readers will wonder why her family had to split up, for example), but the details are given in other biographies. This one is an ode to her spirit - one that will stick with readers reaching for their own dreams. #simonebiles #gymnast #gymnastics #booksinverse #childrensbookillustration #childrensbookstagram #picturebooksofinstagram #picturebooks #blackjoy #blackgirlmagic #perseverance #olympics #blackbooksmatter #windowsandmirrors https://www.instagram.com/p/CiXevMGuTXF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Review: 101 Awesome Women Who Changed Our World by Julia Adams and Louise Wright.
A great collection of women who have made an impact in our world through Sport, Entertainment and STEM, 101 Awesome Women Who Changed Our World is a book for older children about historic women.
The people included are incredibly diverse and alive. I find with a lot of the books that show women, often the women are historic and though in many cases this is the situation in this book, often it is not which is rare. Including women such as Malala Yousafzai and Simone Biles, these are women young girls can look up to right now and I think that’s important.
To accompany these biographies are some really lovely illustrations of these women, ones that stand out for me include entries such as Majlinda Kelmendi, Chantal Petitclerc and Laverne Cox - the illustrator has added little details in this book too, that really add to the stories about the women and it brings them to life.
It’s an enjoyable read filled to the brim with incredible women and illustrations that add to this book beautifully, I just expected more from this as this book.

Courage to Soar by Simone Biles
Tumblr media
Review
I was very hesitant when I needed to read a Christian book because I’ve experienced books that preach to a point of complete annoyance. But reading this didn’t have that experience. It was really nice to read about her start and her growth into the athlete she was in the Rio Olympics. She says that along with her family, her faith and church are what makes her confident in the paths she chooses and at ease in her skin. Throughout the book I didn’t feel as though I was being preached to or converted to Christianity. Her book shed light into who she is as a person, where she started, and how she got to where she was. Before this book, I saw that her as another larger-than-life athlete, and by reading this, it humanized her. I related to her when she realizes that she is responsible for deciding major choices that will affect her life. Even though media and fans glorify her as a gymnast god, at the end of the day she is a girl that has highs and lows and dreams and wants like any other girl her age. Reading what she went through to get where she did, is something that any can do, and that’s practicing and putting in the work. I see her now as a human, not a god, that is the same age as my younger brother. We all have something that we strive for and feels good doing and Simone Biles has gymnastics.
Justification
I chose Simone’s book because her book came up when looking for young adult Christian book and she was a person that I had at least heard of. When choosing something that I don’t normally choose, making the decision is easier when there is a connection. Simone Biles is that connection to the Christianity books world, as weird as that sounds.
Conclusion
This Christian book was made bearable because It wasn’t preaching to me to join their religion. Courage to Soar was a book that honestly described Simone Biles’ journey in her own words, that started before Rio and before gymnastics. I didn’t think I would enjoy this as much as I did for a religion genre book and a biography of an athlete.
