Hey hey hey,
I have another request in mind.
Could you be able to do a platonic Simon ghost Riley and Gn reader where the reader has a panic attack from the last mission and Simon comforts their best friend.
Please
Rain inside my head [Simon "Ghost" Riley X GN!Reader]
A/N: Houdy @itsscromp ! Here's your request, hope you'll like it! <3
Warnings: panick attack, mention of domestic violence, mention of minor character death.
Disclaimer: I do not own any MW characters. English is not my first language. This fic contains important and difficult themes, that may not be for everyone. Panick attacks aren't easy, and they are different for everyone. Don't understimate your pain, never.
Read at your discrection!
Recommended song: Pain Pain Go Away - Kado
It was a habit. Going on a mission, completing the mission -following orders- and coming back to the base, finally being able to rest.
Everything was fine until the last mission.
It was like a switch, and it sent you over the edge.
The briefing was short, and everyone else was on leave soon, finding yourself rushing to your room, locking yourself inside, and finally being able to let the tears run down your cheek.
They were yelling- he was yelling at you venomous words because no; you weren’t worthy, the only child he had, and you somehow weren’t worthy.
You never followed his steps, running away when you had the money, choosing military life instead. It’s a hard life that puts you in front of a horrible situation, faced with life or death decisions, but making it through all of them alive.
This time, it was a hostage situation: you had to save him- no, to save her from the terrorist group that your team had been trying to stop for months.
You all stopped them, capturing some of them for interrogation, but his captor was screaming those words, pure venom getting out of his mouth. He was soon dead, but the hostage soon followed him.
She was a woman, a mom, his son already dead from days, still in her arms- she had internal bleeding, too late to save her. You stayed with her in her last minutes, trying to comfort her, pleading Ghost- who was with you all the time- to wait, to don’t go immediately.
You remained silent when she faded away, somehow having a sense of peace in her eyes. For the rest of the way back, you sit next to Ghost, his presence temporarily calming you, but a storm was already looming inside.
Your chest felted heavy while crying in your room alone, your heart beating and echoing in your head, all the external sounds muffled and far away, and your ragged breath was the only thing you were aware, of while those screams echoed in your head and throwing you in a hell loop.
The sound of a lock made you block your breath in your throat, eyes shut and knees pushed on your chest, your back pressed to the icy wall of the room. Your body hyperventilating, the screams in your mind becoming even louder.
Glancing up, a shadow loomed in front of you, his body getting closed at yours, your watery eyes slowly recognizing the skull mask, his eyes staring back at yours, still crying and sobbing.
“Breathe,” Simon kneels in front of you, his gloved hand squeezes yours, “slowly. Follow mine.”
You intently watch him following the movement of his chest, trying to calm your intense sobbing, tears still streaming down your face. He doesn’t do anything else except sit in front of you, guiding you outside the tunnel of pain you’re going through.
“He was screaming...” your voice came out hoarse, swallowing the lump in your throat, “his words were too much, and...”
He moves to your side, his arms trapping you in a hug, your tears soaking his shirt, but he didn’t seem to care.
“C’mon, let everything out.”
And you both stayed close, sitting on the floor next to each other, Ghost simply waiting for you, only moving when you watch him with puffy eyes and your breath finally calmed.
“Thanks,” you whisper, hearing some bones crackling from his back.
“You must thank yourself, too.”
Shrugging your shoulder, gratefully smiling at him, both deciding to stay together for a few more minutes, enjoying each other’s silence and presence.

B, C, Q for Durarara?
B - A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind
Kuzuhara/Celty, blame it on @erazr ! That is their baby I might have secretly nurtured.
C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will (be nice)
Sh/izuo/Vo/ro/na. She’s 19 and is literally described by the author as “having the mind of a child but the body of an adult” or something that I remember sounding equally as gross. I dont like the path her character takes after she was introduced. She is, after Namie, my prime example of Narita’s technique of introducing “badass” female characters, to derogate their role at some point, so they can be harmless side characters (to the male ones), and a paw on his deus ex machina story points. The fact she is somehow easily forgiven and redeemed (by Nar/ita and by the fandom) for kidnapping a child and trying to gravely wound another (An.ri), just so that she can be Shizuo’s hetero shipping bait for 5 more volumes, is to me a waste of a perfect good villain, and I’m not even touching on the fact that Shizuo himself might have seen her on the same way he sees Izaya if he had known about what she did to Ak/ane, right after what happened. Not to mention the fact the author made her nurture a crush on Shizuo all the way, so that she can Not Act or use her abilities on any meaningful way until their final confrontation on which she’s convenient enough to “keep Shizuo’s humanity by hurting Izaya herself” so Narita can fail on giving us a satisfiable resolution to Shizuo and Izaya’s storyline (which he knew was the most popular driving plot point to which the story headed), so he can keep both of his most famous characters alive to give way to his neverending zombie of a story that is the continuation of drrr!! - although I dont necessarily blame her for that one. I dont like (or more like I had no chance of liking) her because of those reasons after her introduction arc. I dont think she was a character original enough (I dont think any of the russians, except for Simon, are) but she had potential (like Ruri had, like Namie had, like Mika had, like the Orihara Twins had) that was wasted for her to end up “solving” a storyline that wasnt even her own. Its really too bad.
Was I kind enough?
Q - A ship you’ve abandoned and why
Once upon a time I was really into Chi/kage/Kado/taNam/ie. I think I abandoned cuz nobody else shipped with me??? Hmm… Mikado/Anri. I remember thinking they were cute when I first saw the anime, but when I read the novels, the way Narita described Mikado’s infatuation with Anri was both gross, and the least likeable and interesting trait on him, by far.
Also, he somehow made it clear, whether he realized or not, he described somebody with serious dissociation and PTSD by describing Anri. So yeah, I dont really ship that anymore; Anri would be far better with… literally anyone else around her age, on canon.
—–
I have successfully whined enough for somebody to interact with me, I love this feeling!

ZEE
Valt rusteloos.

Girls’ Side and Boys’ Side? Not at These Summer Camps
At the Laurel Foundation’s summer camp in California, kids swim, sail, hike and do crafts. They may also opt to take a Trans 101 workshop, a transgender history course and a transgender rights class.
All of the campers in the program, which started in 2017, are transgender or gender nonconforming.
At many traditional summer camps, it’s all fun and games until campers gather in their cabins and realize that one of them is not quite like the others. To cater to these kids, there are many new camps, including gender-fluid and L.G.B.T.Q. sleep-aways.
“It’s helpful for a young person to attend a program where there are other kids like them,” said Tom Rosenberg, the president and C.E.O. of the American Camp Association.
While many traditional camps may describe themselves as inclusive and tolerant, it can be difficult for L.G.B.T.Q. children to attend when they are required to sleep in gendered cabins or are trying to fit in while pretending to be straight or gender conforming.
Ethan Palmer, a 17-year-old from Pennsylvania, attended a Jewish summer camp for many years before switching to Camp Lightbulb, an L.G.B.T.Q. camp founded in 2011 with locations in Massachusetts, New York and Los Angeles.
He said he had a great time at the Jewish camp, “but I had a harder time connecting with the other guys than most kids did. Even when they didn’t know I was queer or didn’t care, I had to find the sweet spot where I was acting straight enough to fit in, but still being my natural self.”
That’s why the transgender and L.G.B.T.Q. camps function differently.
At Camp Quest Chesapeake, a southern Virginia camp designed for all gender identities, there are gender-inclusive cabins; no programming is split by gender; and everyone wears a name tag labeled with their preferred pronoun.
Camp OUTdoors in Phoenix, which was founded in 2008 and will serve about 250 L.G.B.T.Q. kids this summer, assigns all cabins based on age only.
Parents and kids so far have been incredibly supportive of the alternative cabin division, said Kado Stewart, the founder of Camp OUTdoors, in an email:
“The infrastructure and programming for traditional summer camps are not set up for the likes of L.G.B.T.Q. youth. There are action items in our planning stages that we have to consider that are often not taken into account at more traditional camps — like restrooms, changing rooms, lodging assignments and more — all of which make the camp experience inclusive to our young attendees.”
But is it necessary for L.G.B.T.Q. kids to have their own camps? Or can traditional camps be more adaptable to their needs?
According to Ann Gillard, a former camp director for the Girl Scouts, and a volunteer with the American Camp Association who has written about the issue, both approaches are needed.
Trans campers deserve choices in their camp experiences.
“For some transgender youth, being around a camp full of other people like them, who get it, can be a powerful, life-affirming experience,” Ms. Gillard said. “For other transgender youth, going to a camp they’ve attended in the past and feeling welcomed and affirmed in their gender is a different kind of powerful experience.”
Before they go to that traditional camp, however, some changes may be necessary. Often Kryss Shane, a social worker and L.G.B.T.Q. expert, is the consultant asked to advise.
The first step, Ms. Shane said, is to train counselors and other staff to fully understand the gender and sexuality needs of the campers. The camps also need to determine protocols for dividing campers and counselors by means other than gender.
Camp Tawonga, a Jewish summer camp in Northern California, has managed to blend the traditional with the inclusive. This summer, the camp is offering an all-gender cabin for fifth grade through seventh grade during one session. If campers feel more comfortable in a single-gender cabin, they can choose those.
“There is not one right way to be a girl or boy or any gender, and camps can encourage all campers to just be themselves,” said Jamie Simon, the executive director of Camp Tawonga. “All campers should feel welcomed, included and celebrated for who they are, regardless of differences.”
Ms. Simon said that all campers are bunked by the gender they identify as, rather than the sex they were assigned at birth.
Yet, some L.G.B.T.Q. campers, and their parents, are thrilled that there are finally summer spaces of their own. When Pruett Cunningham, of Rhode Island, sent her son to Camp Lightbulb, it was his first experience in a place with kids who were having the same experience as he was.
“He was starting his transition and was very lonely,” Ms. Cunningham said. “Going there showed him that there were other kids like him, that he could make friends and feel loved and accepted.”
Many who have attended the L.G.B.T.Q. camps echoed Ms. Cunningham’s thoughts. Lou Pendergrass, 16, of Los Angeles, has been attending Brave Trails, an L.G.B.T.Q. camp in California, since it was founded in 2015. While Brave Trails is similar to her former Girl Scouts camp in that they both offer swimming, low ropes, hiking and large group meals, she said, she really gained self-confidence at her L.G.B.T.Q. camp.
“I found a very accepting space to learn who I was,” she said. “It’s helpful to have spaces where minorities can be in the majority for once because it allows our voices to be heard, and our situations are understood far better in a group of our L.G.B.T. peers.”

Girls’ Last Tour 1 - 2 | Juuni Taisen 4 - 5 | Ancient Magus’ Bride 2 - 3 | Idolish7 1 - 2
The only one I’ve properly kept up with out of my 5 shows this season is Juuni Taisen, so I’m going to roll out the tag for that show first. Also, the Idolish7 first two episodes became free recently so I cover them here too.
Girls’ Last Tour 1
Pipes…grunge…hey, doesn’t this look familiar? *glares at Princess Principal*
I’ve only seen one episode of Made in Abyss but I get a bad feeling about these character designs…
I’m worried about this falling into the Yuri Divide. Sure, the fandom can do what it wants, but please don’t ship the lolis.
Oh right. Wind, meaning there’s an opening somewhere.
That dramatic eye opening made the outside world seem like an anticlimax. C’mon, show. You can do better than that.
I feel like Chito says “shut up” a lot, even though she’s only said it twice. I get how she’s kind of relatable, but this show’s not on the level of MMO Junkie or even Juuni Taisen. It’s just kinda…average.
Did Tangled ever teach you how to use a pan, Yuu?
Everything’s kinda WWI-esque. It’s kinda unsettling for a person who’s never properly seen war.
Even in this snowy world, you could still learn to hunt and cook, right?
If you kill your friend in a post-apocalyptic world, you’ll be lonely by war. Don’t kill each other, kiddos. Lives are precious.
This is serious, kiddos! C’mon!
Eating snow is meant to quench your thirst, but it’s not any good for hunger. Apparently.
Well, I’m quite lukewarm on this. I’ve already found my seasonal hits and I study globalisation, so it’s no surprise I find this stuff a lot like my weekly content. Nonetheless, whoever decided to put Classicaloid behind a paywall’s gonna have to pay (pun not intended)!
Girls’ Last Tour 2
I half expect a “hey you!” joke but they don’t work in Japanese…
What are the wiggly things on the ground next to Chi and Yuu in the OP??? Leeches???
Oh geez. Now they even draw cleavage on the lolis. Meaning these guys are just drawn young. That’s both a good and a bad thing.
Those letters seem to be…no language in particular.
Book burning. What a thing to throw in.
Oh. The blocky writing is actually hiragana or katakana. You just need to look at it closely.
I think that was meant to be comedy…but it was so cruel. Poor book.
I think what they’re saying is “don’t burn history”, but I think we learnt that a long time ago when the Chinese burnt books.
Maybe if these gals had Bear Grylls they’d survive a bit longer…?
Lemme guess: either Yuu burnt them all, destroyed them all or read them all.
The original joke was gomen wa, where ne is similar to wa. At least, I think it’s a wa. It could be a re.
The red circle said Yuu wrote the me wrong, so it’s actually probably gonun ne.
Well, someone funded a sakuga ending. Like the one from ACCA with dancing Lotta.
Juuni Taisen 4
I find it heavily symbolic that Nezumi likes eating eggs. Eggs represents chickens…and conundrums…
Ooh…bam. Nisio Isin’s going the Middle Eastern proxy route.
Hmm. Interesting, it’s basically Bystander Effect: the War.
The anime’s currently ahead of the manga, so I got slightly startled by Boar’s appearance. However, I’ve read some spoilers elsewhere, so I knew she was going to be in Monkey’s story somewhere else. I just didn’t think it was this soon.
Recycled footage…bad show! Bad!
LOL, CGI tank. Sorry for ruining the mood, but that stood out a bit too much for my liking.
“…participation is mandatory…” – Huh. I never saw that detail coming.
“Ow. I thought you were against violence.” – (LOL.) Yeah, but apathy isn’t good when something’s coming to get you in the sewers, so I’m with Monkey on this.
Wa-wait! Y’mean, Rabbit can use Chicken to use Eye of the Cormorant…so Monkey will die this ep??? [Monkey dying]’s exactly what I’ve been fearing for the duration of this episode. Update: If you want the spoiler version from the end of the ep…she didn’t die.
Notice Monkey uses moves that use the strength of her opponent against her. It’s a very pacifist touch, so to speak.
There are a series of images that flash by before the casual clothes part of the ED. If you observe them closely, you’ll see a lot of them involve the number 12. (Example: the cubes have lines on them that read “12”.)
LOL, I think I only just now spotted the bodyguard behind Boar. He’s hard to spot behind all the splatter.
Home boy and his T-bars make me laugh every time. Then of course, there’s Mr Floofy Jacket.
Oh, it’s Duodecuple who’s doing these next ep previews. I couldn’t figure out who it was last time I tried.
Juuni Taisen 5
Genius, with a capital letter? They keep calling him the Genius of Slaughter in his backstory, so I guess that’s where it’s from.
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing is the same in Japanese as it is English, so at least the pun is there.
LOL, this episode is pretty much all “stuff goes kaboom!”, and that’s pretty much the way of the Sheep. Haha.
Of mice and men, eh??? (I read enough spoilers to know who the victor is…but I don’t know how they win.)
Whoa, yeah, baby! Bring that action! (That happens to be exactly the way I imagine my own action stories – from the front seat, so to speak.)
The snake’s winking! So cute! I want me some plushies like those!
Old-Timer. Haha, great pun on so many, many levels.
Ancient Magus’ Bride 2
I started doing a productivity blog and got caught up in it so much, I neglected anime! Imagine that – me, neglecting anime!
Oh, there’s a little “open” sign near the door.
It’s anime Hogwarts! Only the train is more colorful…LOL. (Actually, Little Witch Academia is anime Hogwarts, so scratch that.)
Ooh, Elias has a good taste in faces. Not that I’m complaining or anything. (Looks like En-chan, to boot.)
Elias is like the NEET genius of the magic world here. It’s kinda funny.
What’s a Gem’s Bee? (No spoilers, I’m not a manga reader!)
Angelica’s like her (Chise’s) mother, LOL. Seeing Elias properly emote is hilarious, hilarious! (Why I procrastinated on this show? Because it’s a slow mover that should be appreciated in its own time, but I’m not good with binging so…that’s why I’m only watching it now.)
Oh! No wonder Angelica seems like a mother. She is a mother.
Ooh! Ice flowers. Pretty. I’ve already gotten way too many screenshots for my own good out of this show…As a writer, I feel like I could never make a story like this. This is a story best fostered under someone else’s hand.
Poppies, eh? To me, poppies symbolise war and sticking out, but that’s just a product of where I was born. In the case of war, poppies represent the blood of the fallen and those who rise above that.
Speaking of stories I couldn’t write, I’m currently bringing Next to Me to a close. I feel like that’s my best match to AMB, which is why my thoughts dwell on stories so much right now. Next to Me is one of those stories where the world matters just as much as the character building, if not more, which is why the understated majesty of AMB is a good match.
Seeing a blonde Englishman use –kun like a Japanese is a bit disorienting.
Simon really treats Chise like a child, eh?
The “open” sign now says “close”. What is this house, an apothecary?
The CGI door was a bit weird…
Whoa! That was a bit of a fast approach into the dragon scene, but apparently the dragon part of AMB was really hyped…
Ancient Magus’ Bride 3
How does skelly-man see like that?
The dragons look like…Pokémon! (That was my first thought, LOL.)
This blonde is Lindel from the promo material I’ve read. He looks like zaShunina (Kado), so it’s best to be wary of him.
Ooh, now there’s an application of shadows I’d never be able to think of!
Holy flame spirits, Batman! Elias has a tongue! (I got spoilered on that by ANN, but it’s crazy seeing it in context.)
Ancient mages shouldn’t be hot like zaShunina! Where are the real old fogeys like Kiku(hiko, SGRS)?
Uncle Nevin! I found it extremely charming this uil has a name beyond “Uil”.
Can these dragons read minds? Or is it just the power of Dragon Knowledge (TM)?
When they say “Anime saved my life”, I guess they never meant it this literally…or at least, Chise never meant it this literally.
That dragon has way too many eyes!!! Yipes.
Huh. I haven’t felt this feeling since SGRS. The feeling of a masterpiece on my eyeballs.
羽鳥チセ <- That’s how you write Chise’s name, so they did another “Western creature uses Japanese knowledge” thing…
D’aww. That was beautiful! No wonder people like it, now I like it too. Nothing short of majestic, guys, nothing short of majestic.
Hey, the guy who voiced Nevin is called Ryuuzaburo. Ryuu means dragon in this case. (Meta pun!)
Idolish 7 1
Crunchyroll really tried to hype this thing up! Wow. So, here I am at what could pretty much be called a premiere event of the simulcast commentary. Enjoy, friends.
By the way, I’ve tried a bit of the Idolish 7 game (but since it was on BlueStacks, I couldn’t do the “rhythm” part of the rhythm game very well and subsequently couldn’t get too far) and of course, there’s a vested interest through Shirai, Masuda and Nishiyama. Update: There’s no Nishiyama in sight. Sorry, guys.
Oh wow. This is exactly as I remember it in the game, right down to the word!
Yay! I was looking forward to seeing the basketball scene adapted, since it’s possibly the only scene I got to experience in the game in its (Japanese) entirety. Bring the dang game to the Western world, Bandai!
Riku is such a pure cinnamon bun when he gets the basketball back.
LOL, Nagi is such a flirt, kyaa~ (semi-sarcastic).
I don’t remember them dropping Trigger’s name so early…geesh, my memory must be sketchier than I thought it was.
Just as a reference, Iori (black) is 17 while Riku (red) is 18.
Ooh, I just spotted a Trigger ad on one building during that cut.
Ooh, good sense of drama these guys have got going.
Idolish 7 2
Expressiveness for a grump like Yamato, LOL.
LOL, there’s a shark in the back…
Iori has a cat shirt, hahaha.
Cool and sharp…stationery? Like a compass?
Iori’s so sarcastic, I can’t tell f he’s ever being serious or not.
I don’t know who’s my favourite so far out of these i7 boys. Probably the one similar to my husbando, Tamaki.
Ahh, gotta love me a good, honest hardworking anime gal. You don’t see them very often, y’know. It’s refreshing.
That was a great Iori impression Mitsuki did, even visually (note: I didn’t listen to Mitsuki do the impression, I only read the subs…hence my comment). Troyca really captured the style of the game, to boot, which is another cherry on the cake.
Notice Iori stands in front of the D.C. (da capo) and leaves to reveal it.
I researched who Riku’s brother is while I was watching ep 1 and…(spoilers for the uninitiated!) the brother is Tenn of Trigger!
There was a soba ad in the back in one lingering shot…
Hey, I get the feeling there’s CGI involved in this dance segment, but it’s…hardly detectable! Amazing! These guys seem to have gone a long way since the horribly animated Monster Generation MV.
Notice they (Troyca) only use CGI in (mostly) shots which don’t involve closeups.
Of course Nagi winks in the middle of his performance…
Whoo, yeah. That was a bold move by Crunchyroll, and of course that would grab me more than just leaking the first ep. I wonder if any critics covered this on their blogs…? Or would it not matter, since critics wouldn’t cover this “uncritical slop” anyway? Nonetheless, I covered it, and that’s what matters! (Update: Yeah, all the critics – Frog-kun, Lauren in Space, Mage in a Barrel etc. - passed on it. As expected of those critics…)

The exhibition THE GEO POLITICS OF MONETIZED AIRSPACE — Come Fly with Me, I Meet You by the Airside Gucci Concession at 4, Fox Fur Hat features two works by artists Martha Rosler (b. 1943, USA) and Sarah Staton (b. 1961, UK).
Rosler’s In the Place of the Public: Airport Series (1983 – present) uses installation, photo-text and video montage to look at seemingly abstract and interchangeable spaces of air travel, and at the logistics of labor management associated with them. With her SupaStore (1993 – 2000, 2014 – present) Staton examines ways of organizing labor and lives within retail, trade and network structures. Both artists connect these scenarios to the visualization and materialization of public space. The airport and its extended retail space become a showcase for the organization of production chains, in which their embodiment becomes the main cargo. Seen as a method, the airport reaches far beyond its borders, into cities, offices and coffee shops.
Structured as complex and extensive bodies of ongoing work, or as a box-in-a-box set-up, both projects are remarkable for the broad timeframe they capture. Both were started in the early 1980s and 1990s, before internet-based communication, and span through the introduction and widespread adoption of web-based tools we use every day. Continuously and at close range, these projects document the spread of these new communication structures, and allow us to reexamine how they have become embedded within contemporary culture.
Exhibited for the first time in 1993 at Jay Gorney Modern Art in New York, Rosler’s Airport Series consists of a series of photographs taken during her travels as an artist flown to inviting institutions, beginning in 1983. Through this system she became part of a traveling class which, in the 1980s, was out of the reach of most commuters or tourists. Rosler writes about the transition of her own identity from an artist of long-distance buses to one of commercial flights in an early version of her 1998 essay, In the Place of the Public: Observations of a Frequent Flyer. Here Rosler explores Henri Lefebvre’s concepts (c.f. The Production of Space, 1974) in connection to air travel and airports in matters of simulation and representation. She states that “air travel introduces a dislocation or destabilization so complete that it suppresses the realization of where one is, in favor of illusion.”
These photographs, accumulated over a long period of time, are installed accompanied by text printed in vinyl letters: single words, word combinations, short sentences, anaphoras, alliterations, and analogies. Together they generate a poetic language where there was once only an opaque one, based on the functional tone of directions, do’s, and don’ts, designed for transfer and border zones. As in Rosler’s well-known and broadly discussed The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems (1974 – 1975), her text-image combinations generate awareness of these spaces as constructed ones. In 1998 Airport Series was installed at the Frankfurt International Airport by Museum für Moderne Kunst. That same year, Rosler’s essay and text-image montages from the Airport Series were published by Hatje Cantz.
1998 marked a moment when air travel first opened to widespread tourism and low-cost airlines. Seen this way, In the Place of the Public: Airport Series does not address the politics of air travel today; in her essay, Rosler does, however, use still-current vocabulary to describe the basic aspects of air travel and the way travelers cope with the spaces that surround them. After the 2001 attacks in New York and the tightening of border and immigration controls that followed, Rosler updated the installation text to focus more strongly on the politics of scrutiny and to demonstrate how they have spread beyond airports to include the spaces of everyday life. A newer reading of In the Place of the Public reaches beyond “Observations of a Frequent Flyer” into the “Observations of a life of an Artist” today. These are also the observations of a self-employed commuter, a professor, a contractor, a care worker, an Army officer, a special effects technician — the whole range of a labor force (both legal and illegal) that is in constant movement from one place to another.
The installation presented at Midway shows printed and framed color photographs from the years 1986 to 1992 and a 19-minute-long digital movie with sound and material Rosler shot from 1983 to 2016.
SupaStore Air at Midway Contemporary Art recreates the proto pop-up SupaStore: Sarah Statonʼs SupaStore 93, established by the artist in Charing Cross Road in London, in 1993. SupaStore was launched at eleven locations during the nineties — including museums, galleries and artist-run exhibition spaces — and was included in a travelling exhibition meant to explore Eastern Europe, organized by the British Council in 2001. SupaStore exploits retail processes to critique the notion of our branded age, thereby posing an ironic comment on the marketing of artistic genius, questioning notions of originality and copying.
Interested in retail as artistic practice, Staton observed the rapidly-changing function of public space within the UK in the early 1990s, marked by the introduction of shopping malls replacing the high street. Staton looked among precedents and her contemporaries for critiques of the role of the artist as unique “author” of their own work; points of reference included Duchamp’s multiple La Boîte en Valise and the Rotoreliefs (Optical Discs), multiples as artforms in general, Oldenburg’s The Store and Keith Haring’s long-running Pop Shop, and Tracey Emin’s and Sarah Lucas’ The Shop. The set-up for the various SupaStores was always the same. Sarah Staton invited artists to produce multiples and small artworks that fit in the suitcase of a traveling-artist-as-saleswoman. Staton herself worked on displays and ran the stores, which were set up as exhibitions and as spaces for exchange of various kinds, all under the umbrella of “retail”.
Prior to SupaStore, Staton formed Milch (in collaboration with Lawren Maben), a gallery space within a large, residential squat at 64-65 Guilford Street, London. They presented exhibitions and dinners and generated a social space within the loose network of the house’s squatters. The first exhibition in 64-65 Guilford Street took place in 1990 under the title Peace and anarchy & I love form but she doesn’t love me & strange flowers & homage to Schnabel equals freedom and fun forever with Merlin Carpenter, Nils Norman and Sarah Staton. In recent years, Staton has continued collaborations with other artists as an ongoing thread of her diverse practice that encompasses exhibition making, production of artists’ books and creating social sculpture for the public realm. Sarah Staton is Senior Tutor in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art.
Like Milch, Staton’s SupaStore functioned as a meeting point for a London artists’ community. Staton has described the period of this community as one where it felt like there was no outside; over one hundred artists, ranging in levels of recognition, have participated in SupaStore. In this way, SupaStore was a pre-internet hub, materialized through a collection of small objects or things with a more or less definable “use”. The accessibility and straightforward handling of artworks in the SupaStore context enabled an exchange of works primarily within the artists’ community itself.
Exhibited at Midway Contemporary Art, SupaStore takes on various forms of presence in space and meaning. On the one hand, it is a historic document as an installation, as a reflection and documentation of the past project, simultaneously updated and performed. SupaStore Air includes some of the objects originally presented at the stores from 1993 – 2000. Books and videos there suggest a meta-level notion, and provide historical points of reference to today’s wide acceptance of network-lifestyle, consumerism and “shopping” in general. On the other hand, SupaStore Air takes on a new iteration through the participation of many artists new to SupaStore.
The store display by Sarah Staton includes the symbols of Minerva, the Roman goddess of handicrafts, protector of intellectual and manual skills, and patron of warlike goods and heroes. She is also the goddess of wisdom and reason, represented through her symbols: the owl, the shield and the snake. SupaStore is a shop for the time-honoured rituals of trade and exchange.
SupaStore Air includes:
T-Shirts designed by Saelia Aparicio, Gerry Bibby and Henrik Olesen, Merlin Carpenter, Jeremy Deller, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, NSRD (designed by HIT), Ken Kagami, Josephine Pryde, Sarah Staton, Paula Linke, Demelza Watts as well as Nolan Simon for PROVENCE.
SupaStore Air includes objects such as Gamarelli stockings from Rome, artists’ books, magazines and fanzines, SupaStock: objects from the previous SupaStore iterations and other artworks by:
Agenzia delle Entrate, Tasha Amini, Fiona Banner, Ejaz Christilano, Clare Corrigan, Jude Crilly, Aaron Flint Jamison, Freee art collective, GAS (Kelsey Olson and Katelyn Farstad), Alison Gill, Chiara Giovando, Anthea Hamilton and Julie Verhoeven, Matthew Higgs, Alex Israel, Alison Jones and Milly Thompson, Steve Kado, Tobias Kaspar, Lito Kattou, Miguel Soto Karelovic, Nina Könnemann, Adriana Lara, Paula Linke, Adam McEwen, Sean McNanney, Ariane Müller, Hadrian Pigott, Giulia Piscitelli, Lesley Smailes, Gavin Turk, Nicole Wermers, Seyoung Yoon and Anand Zenz.
Many of the objects at SupaStore Air are for sale, please visit the gallery’s front desk to speak with a Midway staff member if you are interested in making a purchase.
