Penny and Simon Barnes are both designers at Arup, so they approached extending their Carlton North home with a clear understanding of their desires, and the home’s potential.  

Their intention; ‘Avoid the tedium of the box and the flimsiness of cheap construction through robust recycled brick and sound environmental performance,’ says Penny.

To achieve this, the couple demolished the existing rear of their Victorian home and reimagined this to suit their family with three children.

Simon was largely in charge of designing the specific details, including triple glazing, thermal mass, rainwater storage, and solar panels. 

‘We didn’t want a typical “box” on the back and wanted to use every available ounce of space, so we constructed a steel frame with curved roof to create a unique first floor,’ Penny says.

Spanning two storeys, this new extension retains the essence of inner-Victorian terraces the couple love (‘A sense of human scale and materiality,’ as Penny says), just with added space to suit their lifestyle.

Materials are simple yet durable, with minimal embellishments, except for those pre-existing. Penny explains, ‘In places, we have left the “memory” of previous wall finishes as a reminder of the age of the home and its colourful history. We have celebrated the new structure which lives inside the existing boundary wall, and creates a sense of scale to the ground level.’

The hero of the entire project is the extension’s curved, blackbutt plywood ceiling, which was brought to life by builders Swift Innovations. This ceiling, along with the kitchen cabinetry by Woodbeast brings an instant warmth to the entire space. 

‘We deliberately tried to eliminate any lighting from our ceilings, and were assisted in this with our colleague and lighting guru, Tim Hunt,’ says Penny.  

Books, plants, artwork, and sentimental items collected from all over the world further add to the charming feel of the property’s interiors. There’s even a table shipped over from one of the couple’s favourite pubs in London! (It required some major rejuvenation,’ Penny says). 

Penny calls the completed home an ‘environment of creativity’ – a place for making – supported by its new and old architecture, the craftsmanship of the builders, their children’s personalities, and recent stint working from home.

Donald Trump suffered emotional abuse from his father, niece writes in bombshell book

Donald Trump suffered emotional abuse at the hands of his father, according to a bombshell new book written by his niece.

Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man by Mary Trump will be published next Tuesday, 14 July. The Guardian obtained a copy.

“Child abuse is, in some sense, the expectation of ‘too much’ or ‘not enough’,” the trained clinical psychologist writes. “Donald directly experienced the ‘not enough’ in the loss of connection to his mother at a crucial development stage, which was deeply traumatic.

“…Having been abandoned by his mother for at least a year, and having his father fail not only to meet his needs but to make him feel safe or loved, valued or mirrored, Donald suffered deprivations that would scar him for life.

“The personality traits that resulted – displays of narcissism, bullying, grandiosity – finally made my grandfather take notice but not in a way that ameliorated any of the horror that had come before.

Mary Trump details serious health problems suffered by Donald Trump’s mother, also called Mary, resulting from an emergency hysterectomy.

That, she writes, left the future president and his siblings dependent on his father, Fred Trump, a New York property developer who died in 1999 and who Mary Trump describes as a “high-functioning sociopath”.

Fred Trump’s oldest son, also called Fred, died in 1981 in his early 40s, from the effects of alcoholism. His daughter, Mary Trump, now writes that Donald Trump’s character was formed by watching the traumas inflicted on and suffered by his older brother.

Donald Trump’s surviving siblings are Robert Trump, a businessman; Maryanne Trump Barry, a retired judge; and Elizabeth Trump Grau, a retired banker.

Robert Trump has sued Mary Trump in New York state, claiming a non-disclosure agreement signed in 2001 precludes the publication of her book. The president has said he thinks the NDA means the book cannot come out.

Mary Trump has argued in appeal filings that the NDA was based on fraudulent financial information. A hearing was scheduled for Friday.

Simon & Schuster was dropped from the suit and subsequently brought its publication date forward by two weeks.

Like a White House memoir by former national security adviser John Bolton, also recently published by Simon & Schuster, Mary Trump’s book is now in the public domain.

Asked to block Bolton’s book, a federal judge in Washington said “the horse is out of the barn”.

Art exhibition aflush with talent

A bathroom showroom in Sussex will be exhibiting for sale an array of original art – on toilet seats – to raise money for a local charity.

Twenty well-established artists have already committed to taking part.

The brainchild of Chandlers Bathroom Showroom, the art exhibition and subsequent sale will raise money for acquired brain injury charity, Headway East Sussex.

Chandlers Bathroom has provided each artist with a blank canvas – in this case a wooden toilet seat, in keeping with the bathroom theme – and allowing each artist to come up with their own unique creative.

Artists include well know Sussex painter Mark Glassman as well as Nadia Chalk, co-director of Creative Waves Community.

Simon Hind, of Chandlers Bathroom Showroom, in Lewes, said: “As a local family owned showroom we genuinely care about our local community and charities in Sussex. This novel art exhibition is a great way to raise money and profile for a fantastic local charity.”

The chosen charity, Headway East Sussex offers rehabilitation and support services for people with acquired brain injuries and their families and carers.

Wendy Pengelly, deputy chief executive, Headway East Sussex, said: “We are thrilled that Chandlers Bathroom Showroom has chosen us as the charity to benefit from this unique event. This is the first time we have seen an initiative of this kind – it’s very unique and we can’t wait to see the final works of art.”

LDF18: 100% Forward Highlights New Talent

100% Forward is a new section at London Design Festival’s trade show 100% Design, curated by design journalist Barbara Chandler who asked seven established designers, each of whom launched their career at 100% Design, to nominate seven rising stars. “Since 100% Design started in 1995, our stellar UK designers have created a world-famous design industry, and continue to do so,” says Barbara. “But all industries need new talent. Who better to spot it than the successful design entrepreneurs who launched their careers in the ‘90s at 100% Design?”

Surface print designer Ella Doran, known for her pioneering use of digital print technology, nominated Kyla McCallum’s origami and pleat inspired homewares (above). “I first met Kyla at designjunction in 2013,” says Ella. “I was struck by her display of folded and pleated papers, which seemed to echo in 3D form a similar source of inspiration to my own ‘Geo’ design. I have watched her develop and progress over the past few years, pushing the boundaries of her craft to great effect. Her hallmark is that wow factor.” Kyla’s London-based design studio, Foldability, creates set design, window displays, lighting and interior products inspired by origami and geometry.

As well as the Bauhaus-inspired installation she created for the show, Kyla was also showcasing various techniques and prototypes and her Fold Pendant for Norwegian producer Northern.

Furniture and product designer Simon Pengelly nominated Daniel Schofield saying, “Daniel’s work has a clarity that is refreshingly subtle and pragmatic, which expresses function and materiality in a very appealing way. Ours is a difficult industry in which to establish and maintain a business and I admire Daniel’s ability to seize an opportunity and his talent to deliver a commission.”

Daniel’s new Rafter stools are made to be a simple and stackable design and inspired by his time working as a builder.

Daniel was also showing his Signet table – created for modern nomadic lifestyles where life and work merge into one and people might reconfigure their spaces regularly. A light and strong trestle collapses in seconds making the tables easy to store away and transport.

Soff Studios was nominated by wallpaper designer Jocelyn Warner, who says, “What I love about Soff Studios is the instant freshness of color and the looseness of the line.”

“Carys Briggs and Andrew Mason create pattern and furniture with a shared rhythm, making to commission or for batch production. Their pieces have a considered approach and a striking modern simplicity that fuses craft and design.”

Furniture, product and exhibition designer and activist Michael Marriott put forward Dom Postlethwaite and Will Drye saying, “Dom worked with me during the summer before his final year at Kingston, and he struck me then as a thoughtful, talented and determined designer. We stayed in touch and I went to see his final degree work on show��where his promise as a designer showed through.”

Dom met Will at Kingston and formed industrial design studio WD-DP, creating a set of wall hooks made from 19mm tubular steel, which is pinched into shape and flattened below the bend to allow the resulting hooks to sit flush to a wooden block that is attached to the wall. Alongside the hooks, titled Pinch, the pair showed their Crush stackable stool and bar stool, Crush shelving and Pinch candelabra all of which combine powder coated steel and Douglas fir.

Majeda Clarke was suggested by Chris Eckersley, who says, “For the last few years I have been involved with the Crafts Council’s Hothouse Programme and so for 100% Forward my mind went back to all the applicants. Many were exceptional and would have been worthy of a nomination. But one person stood out for really great potential – textile weaver Majeda Clarke.”

Majeda has also received the Clothworker’s Foundation Award at Cockpit Arts in London’s Holborn, from where she uses luxury yarns such as cashmere and silk to combine contemporary geometric-inspired designs with the ancient craft of weaving. She has created blankets for batch production in British Mills and fine muslins for weavers in Bangladesh. At 100% Forward she was showing her Albers double-cloth blanket, her Caernafon double-cloth blanket (above), a scarf and panel from her Suddenly collection and her Woven Air Scarves.

Moe Redish was nominated by furniture designer Samuel Chan. “Moe’s work has a clarity that makes him stand out,” says Samuel. “We met when I set a competition for The Cass (my alma mater), promising I’d put the winning design into production through Jointed + Jointed. The desk Moe came up with was clean and simple – boldly so – and showed clear design thinking.”

Light Up North was proposed by Philip Watts, who says, “As both a maker and an interior designer, I’m impressed with Light Up North’s quirky mix of graphic design and lighting. The work is bursting with narrative, something I look for in interior projects. I am also a sucker for someone who is genuinely making great work in the North [of England]. This is good commercial design that should do really well.”

Emma Krause and Dave Freeney invented a new process, bringing it to market with Light Up North. They use formed electroluminescent neon wire to highlight details within works of art, and now – in collaboration with Divine Savages – wallpaper.
