Simeon Saunders Booker Jr. (August 27, 1918 – December 10, 2017) was a journalist whose work appeared in leading news publications for more than 50 years. He worked for The Washington Post, Jet, and Ebony.
Born in Baltimore to Simeon Saunders Booker and Roberta Waring Booker, they moved to Youngstown. His father opened a YMCA for African Americans.
He wrote a poem that was published in the Youngstown Vindicator.
He enrolled at Youngstown College but transferred to Virginia Union University when he learned that African American students were denied activity cards at the YMCA-sponsored school. He graduated from Virginia Union with a BA in English.
He published articles about the Negro league baseball games there. He took his first job with the Afro-American. He worked for the Cleveland Call and Post, which he wrote concerning slum housing, and earned him a Newspaper Guild Award. He was offered a prestigious Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University.
He became the first African American reporter for The Washington Post. He was best known for his reporting during the civil rights movement. His coverage of Emmett Till and the trial is one of the most noted pieces of journalism from the era. The campaign of John F. Kennedy attempted to buy his column in Jet magazine, but they refused. He retired in 2007.
He served as the DC bureau chief of the Johnson Publishing Company, interviewing presidents, and members of Congress, as well as notable civil rights leaders, Martin Luther King Jr., Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, A. Philip Randolph, and James Farmer.
He was recognized by his peers with numerous awards, including a Wilkie Award. He became the first African-American journalist to win the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Award for lifetime contributions to journalism.
He was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame. He was awarded the George Polk Career Award.
Members of the House of Representatives introduced a bipartisan bill nominating him for a Congressional Gold Medal.
he is survived by his wife Carol McCabe and three children. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphaphialpha

“Abe Sapien: Star of the BPRD”
Story: John Arcudi | Art: Roger Langridge
Originally published by Dark Horse in Hellboy: Weird Tales #4 | August 2003 & Collected in Hellboy: Weird Tales - Volume 1 | November 2003
Collected in Hellboy: Weird Tales | December 2014
Plot Summary:
“Command Performance” - 1991, in Paris, Hellboy investigates a series of murders tied to the Grand Guignol theatre troupe.
“Big-Top-Hell-Boy” - 1994, in Germany, Hellboy, Liz, and Abe track down a ghost circus that has been abducting children.
“Theatre of the Dead” - Hellboy and Abe lament always fighting Nazis, hoping to find some non-Nazi action. Luck is in store for them as they come across a headless gunner and some zombies.
“Abe Sapien: Star of the BPRD” - Abe Sapien dreams of a world where he, and not Hellboy, is the shining star hero of the BPRD.
Reading Notes:
(Note: Pagination corresponds with those found in the hardcover Hellboy: Weird Tales collection published December 2014.)
Tumblr media
pg. 115 - Nice set-up for the story. Also love how P. Craig Russell lays out his pages and panel transitions. You can definitely see some of the same storytelling techniques and style that Mike Mignola uses himself.
Also, the silhouette of Hellboy against some Parisians and the title card is a great establishing shot.
pg. 116 - The iron maiden is a nice touch.
pg. 117 - The revelation of the longevity of the theatre troupe and Hellboy’s reaction shot is hilarious.
Tumblr media
pg. 118 - Nothing can be simple. Great action sequence here and interesting reaction from the audience, basically thinking all of this is just part of the show.
pg. 121 - Love this page.
Tumblr media
pg. 122 - Hellboy and Abe recounting what happened is a pleasant call back to most of the in-continuity Hellboy stories out there.
Also, the iron maiden and its contents is still out there.
Tumblr media
pg. 123 - It was bound to happen, but it’s interesting that there are a couple stories that run contrary information. Granted, the first one was a young Hellboy and this is an older one, giving the possibility that something terrible happened in between to change Hellboy’s attitude. (Although, to be fair, all of these tales are meant to be out of continuity).
Gorgeous artwork from John Cassaday and Dan Jackson all throughout.
Tumblr media
pg. 125 - This story has that definite Something Wicked This Way Comes Ray Bradbury vibe. I suppose that’s true of just about any horror/sci-fi story that deals with missing kids and circuses.
Tumblr media
pg. 126 - Hellboy’s reasoning for not liking circuses is sound. Also, it is interesting to see a reprise of Abe’s human disguise.
Tumblr media
pg. 128 - The ringmaster doesn’t give Hellboy any reasons to change his mind about circuses.
Also, I really like the soft blue washes that Jackson uses for the ghostly realm. It’s a nice contrast to the red of Hellboy and gives it an ethereal eeriness.
Tumblr media
pg. 129-131 - The battle here is beautifully done.
pg. 132 - Humorous dig at Hellboy here.
Tumblr media
pg. 133 - Somewhat funny meta-commentary about Hellboy always fighting Nazis trying to bring about the end of the world.
Tumblr media
pg. 137 - The glee with which Hellboy is dispatching the zombies is hilarious.
Tumblr media
pg. 138 - I find it funny that just as Hellboy and Abe think they’ve come across a straightforward gangster plot, zombies notwithstanding, it turns into another end of the world scheme.
pg. 140 - Interesting turn of events with the headless gunner.
Tumblr media
pg. 141-142 - Hellboy getting his butt kicked by a run-of-the-mill demon is hilarious.
pg. 142 - Tom Manning as filtered through the Great and Terrible Oz should be the second clue that something weird’s going on here (aside from the initial butt-whooping.)
Tumblr media
pg. 144 - Poor Hellboy.
Tumblr media
pg. 146 - Hellboy as a braggadocios ladies man might actually be the funniest thing throughout this story.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts:
This batch kind of gives us the highs and lows of the bunch, but still with three highs it’s tilted in the favour of the positives. P. Craig Russell could probably illustrate the instructions on how to clean a fast food joint’s grease trap and make it interesting. Thankfully, though, Will Pfeifer is several cuts above and along with Russell tells a fairly interesting story here. Probably one of my favourites from the Weird Tales series.
“Big-Top-Hell-Boy” and “Abe Sapien: Star of the BPRD” are good, great art for both. This was also a period where John Arcudi was primarily known for offbeat humour--more than his lengthy and more serious run with the BPRD that would come shortly after this--so it’s neat experiencing that side of him again.

His father opened a YMCA for African-Americans. He wrote a poem that was published in the Youngstown Vindicator. Images of Chatham County Wills and Estates
Chatham County was established in 1771 from Orange County, having been named for William Pitt in 1759, the first Earl of Chatham. It was Pitt who served as the British Prime Minister from 1766 to 1768 and opposed harsh colonial policies. The earliest known settlers were Quakers from England who settled along the Haw and Eno rivers. In 1907, parts of Chatham County and Moore County were combined to form Lee County. The county seat is in Pittsboro, North Carolina and Chatham County is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill area.Among the first settlers were the families of Armistead, Alston, Dodd, Kemp, Edwards, Womack, Brewer, Lambeth, Taylor, Fooshee, Waddell, and Patrick.Chatham County Probate Records available to members of North Carolina Pioneers Images of Wills and Estates 1798 to 1819 Alston, James to Phillip Krampus will be released on Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) on December 7 via Scream Factory. Devon Whitehead designed the new cover art; the original poster is on the reverse side.
The 2015 holiday horror film is presented in a never-before-seen “Naughty Cut,” which restores dialogue and scenes that had to be trimmed for the PG-13 theatrical release. (The theatrical cut is not included.)
