No lion is so cute as an antique Chinese lion. 10/10, would let this thing gum me to death any day. It's from the British Museum Silk Roads exhibition, which has a few weeks left to run and, I must warn you, is very full of very slow readers.
#lion#China#British Museum#Silk Roads#history#incense burner#exhibition#no of course it's not a frog! can't you see it's a lion?#was I insufficiently respectful? perhaps#but even I can only spend so long communing with artefacts#unlike everyone else in there apparently

caterina's datamined character description calling her korean-italian and early lucanis designs having him look east asian . i'll just do everything myself i guess
assorted thoughts: caterina is fully 'korean' or whatever the thedas equivalent would be in this design, and clawed her way to the top of the crow food chain after years of work. their armor is something caterina forcibly incorporated to distinguish house dellamorte from the other crows, and a symbol of their status because they get it custom made or imported. of course race-equivalents do not really exist in thedas or this world but i also will never forget how gaider just implied (east) asian people don't exist in thedas because it just so happens that there are no asians on the continent of thedas (guy who forgot about boats) . explode and die. there's not the same kind of discrimination as exists irl ofc (and the dellamortes are actually treated fine, much better than a mage or elf) but a level of xenophobia against foreigners from a different continent. illario looks the least like her, and passes for being fully antivan, which changes how he is recieved by the other crows.
and sorry if the korean is bad please actually let me know if it's horribly translated i relied on google translate . if you are one of ten asian dragon age fans feel free to talk to me at any given moment.
#there's also some things in my mind about illario's ability to pass as an antivan while not really being antivan at all#so he's actually partially rivaini. and how differently he sees his family being treated whereas he gets the privilege of passing#but isn't at all 'antivan' . and while he tries to distinguish himself as being like caterina and her heir etc.#he is Aware of the difference in how he is perceived. i can really make anything about immigrants fr LOL#if you the dragon age fan reading this are korean feel free to give me constructive criticisms PLEASE.#it was all referenced off the 'joseon army' wikipedia page with some da-specific embellishments#oh plus modern styles of hanbok. ok. thats it#and other thoughts from my own background. lol#dragon age#illario dellamorte#lucanis dellamorte#caterina dellamorte#veilguard#my art#edit. slight adjustment because technically gaider has been misquoted#but its still a stupid fucking idea#you cant decide you're including india dressed up as the roman empire and say 'dorian is indian' without thinking of THE SPICE TRADE#NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE SILK ROAD AND CREATING FANTASY EQUIVALENTS ANYMORE

Chess and the silk road.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9897bf8e4f70ccff50703299174b5551/16689ef254118c87-00/s540x810/6a1201fe20ab437c444317a58cfaa75281c996dc.jpg)
Traditional games including chess and its many variants constitute important elements of the cultures of different people living along the Silk Roads. The interactions and reencounters that have been taking place for thousands of years along the Silk Roads provided considerable opportunities not only for the spread of traditional games throughout different regions but also for their enrichment at different levels.

The Cryptic Motif of “Three Hares with Conjoined Ears”
On the Heavenly Palace decorative patterns found in the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang from the late Northern dynasties are images with cryptic patterns, including Buddha's head, the Taotie beast, deer, animals copulating, three hares with conjoined ears, and also writings. This type of decorative pattern is cryptic and difficult to understand and may be closely related to the history of the popular Eastern iconology and divination philosophy from the Han and Wei dynasties and Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou's suppression of Buddhism. They are important references for studying the related history of this period.

So glad to finally see it more finished!
A few years ago I did a version of this drawing that I never finished, I adore this ship, in fact it's my otp in hetalia fandom. historically they are connected and that makes it 20 times better! I truly adore these two….. I'll try to draw them more often!

Luo Song's art depicts a crossing of the Silk Road from the Chinese perspective, with one long poster split into four sections.
It starts with Chinese merchants leaving on horses in Chang An, ancient capital of China (now called Xian), and you can tell it's Chang An because of the presence of the Drum Tower (a city landmark), and the Giant Wild Goose Tiger Pagoda. There's also a dragon there in case you don't get the point.
Then it comes to the Painted Caves of Dunhuang, an art gallery in the desert. The flying woman is an apsara, a Buddhist wind angel of the Silk Road. Tyrannical upper class Chinese teenage girls love to have photo shoots of themselves as Dunhuang Apsara they put on social media like Weibo and bilibili.
Then comes a section in Xinjiang, West China, a region home to the legendary Oasis Cities, and the Turkic and Persian peoples like the Tajik, Uyghur, Kyrgyz, Mountain Mongols, and Pamiri. The mountains in the far right of the image are the Flaming Mountains of Turfan, which has a unique optical illusion at certain times of day: as a result of shimmering hot desert air combined the unique patterns of the rock, the cliffs appear to be on fire. My best guess for the building in the center, showing Turkic architecture, is that it is the Tomb of Tamerlane in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. According to legend, the tomb is inscribed with "If I still lived, the world would tremble."
Finally, the last bit has an angel in the Georgian/Armenian style, representing the passage into the lands of Christian Central Asia, followed by one of the westernmost end points of the Silk Road, Istanbul, represented by the Hagia Sofia....and in the far left, Venice.

Mogao Caves, Dunhuang, Gansu province, China.
A system of 500 temples in Dunhuang, an oasis located at the crossroads on the Silk Road. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years.

The first caves were dug out in 366 CE as places of Buddhist meditation and worship, later the caves became a place of pilgrimage, and caves continued to be built at the site until the 14th century. The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes.
