Sig Spear LT 5.56…AR-15 Replacement?
Tumblr media
Back at the beginning of this year I was fortunate enough to pick up a new sig Sauer Spear LT 5.56 16” rifle from the good folks over at Brownells. I had been wanting to grab one of these ever since they were first announced. Not really sure why I was so drawn to this particular rifle. The MCX series of rifles from Sig Sauer had been out for quite a number of years and even though I’ve seen them, I never really had a desire this strong to pick one up. Was it the anodized coyote finish? Was it the different varieties of this particular rifle? Or was it the fact that Sig Sauer has been awarded military contracts for the Spear platform? I’d probably say that all 3 of these were a factor. Another factor is that I already have a ton of traditional and modern AR-15 rifles. This MCX Spear LT from Sig truly looks like a contender to potentially replace the AR-15 rifle platform. Many have tried to do this and failed. Would this be the one? Let’s find out.
Tumblr media
Once I received my Sig Spear LT 5.56 from Brownells last January I have outfitted it with most of the bare minimum accessories. It seemed only fitting to mount a Sig Sauer Tango MSR 1-6 LPVO on top to give me some flexibility in shooting. Out on the muzzle end, the sig flash hider came off quickly in leu of a rugged Suppressors flash hider so I could run one of my Rugged suppressors. A set of MBUS3 backup sights from Magpul were also in order. A month or so back there was some controversy regarding barrel and hand guard flex on the new Spear LT models. Arisaka has a stiffening device that’s super reasonable, so I picked one of those up to provide that extra rigidity that Sig failed to provide with their design.
Tumblr media
After 600+ rounds of suppressed shooting, without cleaning, I’m ready to provide my analysis as to where I think the Sig Spear LT fits in the scheme of things, specifically in regards to the traditional AR-15. The Sig Spear LT ha been 100% functional to date. I have had zero malfunctions. The recoil is more than one would expect from a piston driven system, but only slightly…it truly is pleasant to shoot. Sig recommend to run the gas system on the minus setting when shooting both suppressed and unsuppressed. The plus setting is for adverse environments only. I suspect that Sig tailored the gas system for use with their suppressors, so one might find different suppressors effect the harshness of the recoil. The ambidextrous mag release, safety selector, charging handle and bolt release all function flawlessly. This truly is a rifle for both right hand and wrong hand shooters. I’ve run a variety of magazines including Magpul M2/M3, Duramag and GI aluminum magazines without any issues. They all drop free and feed smoothly. I have also used a variety of ammunition and while all ammo types have functioned 100%, some ammunition provided better accuracy than others. I have yet to run match ammunition through it however since it’s meant to be a fighting rifle, so I stuck with military grade ball ammunition. The rifle itself can seem somewhat front heavy especially with a can attached, but not overly so. Sig did a wonderful job at balancing the business end with the minimalist folding stock.
Tumblr media
So my conclusion is this. Sig Sauer has a winner on their hands and this is evident by the constant out of stock nature of these rifles. They sell out relatively quickly. Brownells has been getting them in stock in a variety of configurations lately, but again they tend to sell out fairly quick. Is this an AR-15 replacement? It definitely can be. If the higher cost of the rifle platform can be ignored, it can do everything an AR-15 can do and do some things better. Compact folding stock package, adjustable gas system, fully ambidextrous controls….these are all things that your standard AR-15 don’t come with out of the box. It is made for today’s military, therefore the price and features reflect this. Sig Sauer does have a winner here…and it has the potential to topple the AR-15 from the top.

Sig Sauer MCX Spear LT 5.56…
Tumblr media
The Sig Sauer MCX platform has been around for quite some time now. The latest version of the Sig Sauer MCX is the Spear LT. The Spear version is slated for military use, so the LT version is the light weight version of the new M5 selected for the military. It comes in a number of different calibers and configurations currently. Available calibers are 5.56, 7.62x39 and .300 Blackout. The Sig Spear LT is available in rifle, pistol and SBR versions. The barrel lengths are 16”, 11.5” and 9” for .300 Blackout. You can get it in any color you prefer, so long as it’s in FDE. Hopefully other color options become available down the road.
Tumblr media
My quest for the new sig Spear LT started back in the Fall of last year when it was first announced. Being the new hotness on the block, they were pretty hard to find in a specific version. I had my hopes set on an 11.5” 5.56 pistol version, but last month the 16” version in 5.56 and the 11.5” version in 7.62x39 came in stock over at Brownells. I truly wasn’t interested in the 7.62x39 version, even if the barrel length was what I was after. I had also passed up a .300 Blackout version that was in stock back in November. So I decided to go ahead with the 16”rifle version in 5.56. Brownells of course had it on the way to my FFL the following day. Once it arrived, I picked it up and started to look over the rifle.
Tumblr media
The first thing that is noticeable is the packaging that Sig uses a very simple cardboard box to ship the Sig MCX Spear LT in. I’d have preferred to see some sort of a hard case for such a pricey rifle, but let’s be honest…most any factory hard case gets put in the attic anyways in leu of a nicer range case. It comes with a single Magpul M3 Pmag in black, a sticker, a cable lock and documentation. There was supposed to be a taper washer included in case you wanted to change out the Sig specific muzzle device for a non-Sig muzzle device. This is especially helpful if you’re using a suppressor other than a Sig suppressor. Unfortunately this taper washer was missing from my box.
Tumblr media
First impressions of the rifle itself…it’s truly one fine looking firearm. The fit and finish are truly what you’d expect from a higher end firearm. The anodized aluminum parts were all a slightly different shade of FDE which I tend to prefer. It is piston driven with a 2 position gas setting. The factory trigger, while no Geissele, will do for now. It’s way better than any milspec trigger I’ve used in the past. It does have a sorta flat bow with a hook at the bottom. I’m not crazy about the hook, but the trigger pull, break and reset are nice for what they are. The folding stock is very minimalist, except it does have sort of a cheek riser and QD socket. At the end of the day…there is nothing that “has” to be changed out immediately except the muzzle device so I can use one of my Rugged suppressors. So far, I’ve added a set of Magpul MBUS3 in FDE and the Sig Tango MSR optic.
Tumblr media
Hoping for an update on this rifle in the near future, but if I don’t acquire any other firearms this year, so be it. The Sig MCX Spear LT is truly a modern fighting rifle. It balances better than anticipated, even with the added weight of a can on the end. Well done Sig.
