225 - Murder on the Orient Express

All aboard, listeners! This week, we’re looking at Kenneth Branagh’s recent attempts to take on Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot with 2017′s Murder on the Orient Express. Directed by and starring Branagh as the French investigator, the film assembled a gobsmacking assemblage of stars (from Michelle Pfeiffer to Judi Dench to Penelope Cruz to Johnny Depp) for one of Christie’s most iconic whodunits that looked to be a splashy blockbuster. Though the film was a box office success enough to launch a new franchise, the film received a ho-hum critical response and never got close to achieving the Oscar embrace received by Sidney Lumet’s 1974 version of the material.

This episode, we talk about Branagh’s underwhelming approach to the material and how the film doesn’t give us movie stars acting opposite movie stars in the way that we want. We also discuss how Death on the Nile compares to this film’s lacking sense of fun, Michelle Pfeiffer’s acting nominations, and the 2017 Saturn Awards.

Hoy hace 13 años [22_11_11]..me fotografie con un Cartel de THE BIG FISH "Can you meet the CHALLENGE?" en el PIER de BRIGHTON [donde me llevaron con 16 años en 8_88 con la escuela de idiomas EF por lo que volví para recordarlo pues ahí o entonces me compre un SKATE "SANTA CRUZ" y mi 1er disco que fue INTRODUCING THE HARDLINES ACCORDING Terence Trent D'ARBY que incluye RAIN y el cual sustituyo brevemente al suicidado HUTCHENCE de INXS de cara a un concierto por SIDNEY'00..y que fue el siguiente que vi tras INXS en sala DIVINO AQUALUNG al hacerlo el 28_10_93 presentando SIMPHONY OR DAMN que abre WELCOME TO MY MONASTERY y SHE KISSED ME..mismo día que toco en MADRID el cantante de JUDAS PRIEST con su otro grupo FIGHT presentando su cd debut WAR OF WORDS en la sala Canciller asi como en sala REVOLVER Duff MCKAGAN de GUNS N ROSES presentando su cd debut en solitario BELIEVE IN ME y al que fotografie a las puertas del pub UNDERWORLD de LONDRES junto al pub THE WORLD'S END hablando con 3 chicas antes del concierto del batería original de GUNS N ROSES Steven ADLER con el que me fotografie al final del concierto y que tocó por última vez con ellos en un concierto por el FARM AID cayendose al subirse a la batería para estrenar CIVIL WAR del CD USE YOUR ILUSION II [tuvo como CARA B GARDEN OF EDEN y CIVIL WAR apareció por 1era vez en el LP Nobody's Child: Romanian Angel Appeal  un álbum benéfico lanzado en julio de 1990 para beneficiar a los huérfanos rumanos , bajo los auspicios de la Fundación Romanian Angel Appeal. Uma Cidade, Duas Cidades

O videoarte Uma Cidade, Duas Cidades (08'06") explora a linguagem da fotografia documental e dos fotofilmes para investigar a existência de duas cidades que ocupam o mesmo espaço geográfico chamado Anchieta, litoral sul do Espírito Santo. O vídeo propõe uma reflexão sobre a forma como as cidades são inventadas pelas imagens e o papel do registro e da memória. •

Ensaio - UMA CIDADE, DUAS CIDADES

Quantas cidades cabem em uma só e qual o papel do registro e da memória para a invenção de um local e de uma gente? Estas são algumas reflexões que proponho com o videoarte "Uma Cidade, Duas Cidades", que será exibido pela primeira vez no dia 06 de novembro, durante a Mostra Paulo Gustavo, em Anchieta, Espírito Santo.

Pensar sobre esses temas nesta cidade é particularmente interessante. Há duas décadas, o turismo e a indústria fizeram a economia da pequena cidade crescer e se diversificar. Para mostrar este movimento, as imagens produzidas pelo poder público, pela publicidade empresarial e por grande parte do que é postado espontaneamente nas redes sociais acabam criando um balneário repleto de corpos, bens de consumo, experiências e comportamentos regidos pelas exigências do interesse econômico.

Entretanto, embrenhada na nova cidade, ainda existe a Anchieta da memória e do cotidiano. Os seus moradores habitam uma e outra, transitando entre elas, misturando o que encontram, escapando e tornando a voltar. Apesar disso, a cidade anterior é pouco documentada e tende a ser abolida do imaginário, das histórias e da própria linguagem, reduzida aos dois comandos frequentemente encontrados em placas pelas ruas: "vendo" e "compre".

As cidades históricas e os grandes centros do país são muito documentados. Incontáveis imagens narram as histórias desses locais, de seu povo e das transformações pelas quais passaram. Talvez por isso, os seus moradores tenham tanta confiança em suas trajetórias. O mesmo não acontece no interior do país. Atualmente, grande parte de sua memória fotográfica está sob o controle de grupos interessados apenas em formar mercados consumidores e oportunidades para investimentos. Eles não produzem afetos coletivos. As pequenas cidades precisam de muitas fotografias que lhes mostrem que em cada uma mora uma gente, com modos de vida, história e futuro particulares.

A realização de projetos culturais relacionados à fotografia em municípios do interior é urgente e necessária. Um projeto como o videoarte "Uma Cidade, Duas Cidades" pode provocar algumas dessas reflexões, mas ainda é muito pouco. Seria preciso um conjunto de políticas públicas e muito trabalho para gerar uma educação e uma cultura ao redor da fotografia. Apenas assim se poderá capturar de maneira generosa a vida e o cotidiano desses locais e dessa gente. A tarefa é enorme.
