How to Install Replacement Windows

When Maddy Krauss and her husband, Paul Friedberg, first laid eyes on their 1897 Shingle-style home, they fell in love with its handcrafted turn-of-the-century construction, wide front porch, and massive entry-hall staircase. They were also delighted to find that many of the original architectural details were still intact, including wood paneling, exquisite carvings, stained-glass windows, and an ornate cast-bronze fireplace.

The windows were another story. The originals had been swapped out a decade earlier for low-quality sash kits that were drafty, ugly, and completely inappropriate for the graceful Victorian-era home, This Old House TV’s fall 2007 project in Newton, Massachusetts. The solution: Call in TOH general contractor Tom Silva and his crew to install energy-efficient replacements.

Because the existing window frames were sound and square, Tom could use insert replacement units—in this case, Andersen’s Woodwright Insert Replacement Windows, vinyl-clad wood units fitted with energy-saving, low-e insulated glass. These fully assembled, ready-to-install windows slip right into the existing openings. When the job was done, the house had beautiful new double-hungs that looked right, worked smoothly, and gave Maddy and Paul one more thing to love about their old house. Step 1 Window Parts

Unlike full-frame windows, which are designed for new construction, replacement windows are made to fit into existing window openings. They’re available in dozens of standard sizes, from as narrow as 11 ½ inches to as wide as 68 inches, and come in wood, vinyl, fiberglass, vinyl-clad wood, and aluminum-clad wood.

There are three basic types of replacement windows: sash kits, insert replacements, and full-frame units. Sash-replacement kits—what Tom found on the Newton house—give an old window frame new movable parts, including jamb liners and sash. The liners are fastened to the side jambs of the window opening, then the sash are slipped in between. For these to work, the existing window frame must be level and square. An insert replacement window consists of a fully assembled window in a ready-to-install secondary frame. Sometimes called a pocket window, an insert replacement slips into the existing opening and is then fastened to the old side jambs. Because you’re adding new jambs and liners, the glass area will be slightly smaller than it was before.

Full-frame replacement windows are similar to inserts, except that they have a complete frame that includes head jamb, side jambs, and sill. These are the only option when the old window frame, sill, or jambs are rotted. To install these, you must strip the window opening down to its rough framing, inside and out.

Step 2 Measuring for Replacements

The most important step in the window-replacement process happens long before installation day. It’s when you measure the dimensions of the existing window frame to make sure you order a replacement unit that’s the right size . Here’s how to do it.

Start by measuring the inside width of the old window frame, jamb to jamb, in three places: across the top, middle, and bottom. Write down the smallest of the three measurements.

Next, measure the frame’s height from the top of the sill to the underside of the head jamb in three places: at the left jamb, in the middle, and at the right. Again, record the smallest measurement.

Check the squareness of the frame by measuring the diagonals from corner to corner. The two dimensions should be the same. If the frame is out of square by 1/4 inch or so, don’t worry; the replacement can be shimmed to fit. Anything more may require adjustments to the frame. If the frame is so out of whack that a square replacement wouldn’t look right, you’ll need a full-frame replacement.

Finally, use an angle-measuring tool to determine the slope of the sill; some replacements come with a choice of sill angles.

Step 3 Take Out the Sash

The first step is to remove the old sash from the window frame. In most cases, you’ll need to pry off or unscrew the interior wooden stops to remove the lower sash. (If you’re planning to reinstall the stops, do this job carefully; they break easily.) Next, take out the parting beads to free the upper sash. If your windows, like these, were previously fitted with sash-replacement kits, there won’t be any beads. Simply press in on the jamb liners and pull the top of the sash forward. Then pivot one side of the sash upward to free it from the jamb liners.

Step 4 Pry Off The Jamb Liners

If the window frame was fitted with vinyl or aluminum jamb liners, use a flat bar to pry them free. In the case of an original window, remove any remaining wooden stops from the window frame. Leave the interior and exterior casings intact.

Step 5 Prep the Frame

Scrape off all loose and blistered paint and patch any holes or cracks with an exterior-grade wood putty, such as the ones from Elmer’s or Minwax. Then sand the jambs smooth, and prime and paint the surfaces.

Step 6 Remove the Old Sash Weights

If the original sash weights are still in place, take this opportunity to remove them from their pockets and insulate behind the window frame. Unscrew the access panel on each side jamb and pull out the weights.

Step 7 Prep For Insulation

Tom likes polyurethane foam, because it’s more effective at blocking air than fiberglass insulation. Make sure to use only low-pressure, minimally expanding foam intended for windows and doors; anything else will bow the frames and keep the sash from working. First, pull out any existing fiberglass in the weight pockets. Then bore 3/8-inch-diameter holes, one near each end and one in the center, down through the sill and up through the head jamb.

Step 8 Spray in the Foam

Shoot the expanding foam into the holes until it begins to ooze out. (Tom is using a commercial system, but you can do the same job with foam from a can, like Dow’s Great Stuff.) Also spray foam into the sash-weight pockets in the side jambs. Allow the excess to harden for at least 6 hours, then break or cut it off flush before replacing the sash-weight pocket panels.

Step 9 Caulk the Opening

In preparation for installing the window, apply an elastomeric caulk to the exposed inner face of the exterior casings or to the blind stops on the top and sides of the frame. Also apply two continuous beads of caulk along the windowsill.

Step 10 Install the Window

Working from inside the room, set the bottom of the insert replacement onto the sill, then tip it up into the opening. Press the window tight against the exterior casings or blind stops.

Step 11 Fasten it Loosely

Hold the window in place with one 2-inch screw driven loosely through the upper side jamb and into the framing. The screw should be in just far enough to allow the window to operate. Close and lock the sash.

Step 12 Shim as Necessary

Adjust the unit by inserting shims under the sill and behind the side jambs until it is centered in the space and opens, closes, and locks smoothly. Measure the window diagonally from corner to corner; the measurements should be the same. When the window is square, screw it in place through the predrilled holes. To avoid bowing the frame, slip a shim behind the jamb at each screw, then screw through the shim. Trim the shims flush with a utility knife.

Step 13 Caulk, Prime and Paint

From the outside, measure the gaps between the window frame and the casing. Fill gaps less than 1/4 inch wide with elastomeric caulk. Anything wider must first be stuffed with foam-rubber backer rod. On the inside, fill any gaps around the window with minimally expanding foam. Finish up by reinstalling the stops or adding new ones. Then prime and paint, or stain the interior of the window sash and frame.

U.S. allies have killed thousands of Yemeni civilians from the air.

After 22 died at a wedding, one village asks, ‘Why us?’

RAQAH, Yemen--The ground where the wedding tent once stood was covered with children’s slippers, broken musical instruments, pieces of festive clothing and other detritus of destroyed lives. Teeth, still attached to the jawbone, lay near some tattered decorations.

An airstrike hit the wedding in this remote mountain village on April 23, killing 22 civilians including eight children, and injuring dozens, according to interviews with 17 villagers in late May. More than three years into Yemen’s civil war, over 16,000 civilians have been killed and injured, the vast majority by airstrikes, the U.N. human rights office estimates, adding that the figures are likely to be far higher. The deaths are continuing unabated, with as many as hundreds of casualties per month, despite assurances by a U.S.-backed regional coalition to better protect civilians amid mounting criticism within the United States and the international community.

That coalition, led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, is backing Yemen’s exiled government in its conflict against rebels known as the Houthis, who dominate the capital and the north. The United States is playing an essential role in the war, supporting the coalition with intelligence, refueling, technical assistance, and billions of dollars in bombs and other weaponry.

The coalition is the only actor in the conflict that uses war planes, mostly American- and British-made fighter jets. The airstrikes have struck hospitals, schools, markets, motels, migrant boats, gas stations, even funeral gatherings, raising questions about the coalition’s ability to abide by humanitarian laws that calls for civilians to be safeguarded.

A month after the airstrike in Raqah, the destruction on the ground remained eerily preserved. The lives of the survivors, however, had been forever altered.

“We lost our minds that day,” said Amna Yahya, the groom’s mother. “I still can’t comprehend what happened. Why us?”

The growing civilian casualties across Yemen have led to widespread denouncement of the U.S. role and calls in Congress to halt or regulate American weapons sales to Saudi Arabia, a close U.S. ally in the Middle East. Despite the concern, President Trump announced $110 billion in new arms sales last year to the kingdom, weapons that most analysts expect will be used in Yemen.

In the hours following the airstrike in Raqah, local media published photos, provided by the Houthis, showing the bomb was a GBU-12 Paveway II precision-guided bomb, manufactured by Raytheon, the Massachusetts-based defense contractor, according to Bellingcat, an investigative website.

Visits to other bombed sites by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch confirm that American-made munitions, including banned cluster bombs and Paveway bombs, have been used in attacks that have killed and injured civilians. The Post saw remnants of U.S.-made bombs in the capital, Sanaa, and in the southwestern city of Taiz.

After the Senate narrowly approved a $510 million first installment of precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia last June, the kingdom said it would launch a training program to reduce accidental targeting of civilians. But in the year since that announcement, civilian deaths were 7 percent more than the year prior, U.N. data shows. In April alone, there were 236 civilians killed and 238 injured--the deadliest month this year so far.

A U.N. report last month found 1,316 Yemeni children were killed or injured last year, and that more than half of the casualties resulted from airstrikes.

A Saudi government official disputed the U.N. figures and said the coalition is “implementing the highest standard measures to prevent civilian casualties,” including “continuous training” of its staff and efforts to improve rules of engagement.

Human rights activists welcome such efforts but say the coalition’s probing of the aftermath of airstrikes remains hollow. “There is no genuine follow-up on their international human rights obligations and their commitment to respecting humanitarian laws,” said Rasha Mohamed, Yemen researcher for Amnesty International.

Raqah is in a rugged region in the northern Yemeni province of Hajjah. The sprawling village of about 700 residents is about a three-hour drive from the provincial capital, a place so remote that to reach it requires crossing dry river beds and driving up goat paths.

The civil war that emerged from the political chaos that followed the 2011 Arab Spring revolts hardly touched the villagers, mostly farmers and herders. Many supported former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was ousted in 2012. But even after the Houthis swept into Sanaa and pushed out the internationally recognized government, the conflict never came to their area, villagers said.

They said they would often see and hear war planes and unmanned drones fly above their huts, but they never felt threatened. They had nothing to do, they said, with the Shiite Houthis or Iran, which is backing the rebels.

“There are no Houthis here,” said Yahya Ahmed, a villager whose nephew was killed in the airstrike. “Did you see any checkpoints in our area?”

Across northern Yemen, rebel checkpoints are ubiquitous. But in and around Raqah, there were none. Nor were there were any visible signs of military activity. Villagers said there were no military bases in the area and none of their men were fighting with the rebels.

The only time they had seen rebels in recent memory was the morning after the airstrike, when some Houthis officials arrived to assess the damage.

“We refused to join the Houthis,” said Mohammed Yahya, the groom’s uncle. “One side says, ‘God is Great.’ The other side says, ‘God is Great.’ We don’t know who is right.”

The wedding of Yahya Jaffer and his bride, Fatma, began auspiciously enough. They were both 20 years old, both from the al-Musabi tribe. Like their parents and grandparents, they were marrying within their community. They are cousins.

The families had spent much of their savings on the wedding. A large white tent was erected in front of their home. More than 150 guests drank soft drinks and water and feasted on lamb and other delicacies. A group of local folkloric dancers and musicians entertained, according to the recollections of villagers present at the event.

Many villagers said they heard two planes circling above their homes throughout that day, as well as just before the attack.

“An hour later, one of them hit us,” Amna Yahya said.

It was shortly after 10 p.m. By then, most parents and the elderly had left the wedding. The youth clapped to the rhythm of drums and lutes. Some sang, others chanted, as the dancers skipped and leaped in celebration. Then, a thunderous sound.

“I saw a flash of red, and I lost consciousness,” Jaffer recalled. “When I woke up, I heard people screaming in pain. People had lost arms and legs. There was blood everywhere.”

Those who could searched through the rubble for survivors, pulling them to safety. Others struggled to find the dead: Most were coated by ash or torn into pieces.

The only way Aitan Suwaed said he recognized his 17-year-old son, Hamdi, was “from his clothes, the parts that weren’t burnt.”

The 22 fatalities included 12 of the dancers, four musicians and six villagers, including one who played the lute. Most of the children killed were in the dance troupe.

The dancers all belonged to the Muhamasheen, Yemen’s most marginalized ethnic group. Performing at weddings was among the few jobs they could find.

For 10 of them, only pieces of their bodies were found, so they are buried in two mass graves. “It’s all my family,” said Ahmed Rifaei, 37, a dancer who survived.

The living, too, are in bad shape.

Some of Raqah’s residents have lost their hearing. Children have lost limbs, while others carry shrapnel from the missile inside their bodies. The nearest hospital is in the provincial capital, and most villagers cannot afford the three-hour journey.

Yahya Ahmed not only lost his nephew. His wife, Noora, was four months pregnant. When she heard the bombing, she started screaming uncontrollably. The next morning, she had a miscarriage, he said.

Other women and children in the village report having nightmares where they relive the bombing. One woman was in such shock that she feared leaving her bed. Whenever she needed to go to the bathroom, her relatives carried her. Other villagers said they now sleep outside their houses at night out of concern their homes would be targeted by airstrikes.

“What happened to us, happened to everyone in the village,” said Amna Yahya. “Everyone is full of fear.”

Many are also filled with anger, not just at the Saudi-led coalition, but at the United States. “If it wasn’t for the American aircraft, Saudi Arabia would never strike Yemen,” said Mohammed Yahya, the groom’s uncle. “America gives them weapons, and the Saudis hit us.”

Some villagers have fled to other areas rather than risk being targeted by another airstrike. But the vast majority don’t have that option, including the bride and groom. With their family house destroyed, Jaffer and Allam live in their animal shed, next to cows and goats, their abode reeking of hay and animal urine. They are married in principle but not legally: They can no longer afford to pay for their wedding certificate. So it hasn’t been signed by the local marriage official.

On a chair in the shed is the white traditional Yemeni robe that Jaffer wore at his wedding. It is now bloodstained. He has no intention of cleaning it.

“I will keep this to always remember what happened,” he said.

Will a High Fence Reduce Traffic Noise?

An 8-foot-high solid fence or wall might knock 6 to 10 decibels off traffic and other ambient noise, which typically measures 60 to 70 decibels—about equal to the noise an older dishwasher makes. That might not seem like much, but the decibel scale is logarithmic. To the human ear, a 10-decibel drop seems like half as much noise — in this case, from an old dishwasher to a refrigerator’s hum.

At Carlisle, unfortunately, an 8-to 10-foot fence or wall isn’t a possibility. The house sits on a corner lot, and like many municipalities, the town restricts fences and walls that could block views at traffic intersections. Plus, such a big barrier would detract from the historic farmhouse’s curb appeal.

So instead, landscape designer Stephanie Hubbard has called for a traditional 2 1/2-foot-high, dry-laid stone wall along the front of the property. Though traffic noise can still spill over the low structure, the wall’s mass will help deaden the sound of tires on the road. And since it will be close to the source of the noise, it can bounce the sound waves away before they head toward the house.

Equally important is the character the wall adds to the front yard. “You have a nice feeling of enclosure,” says TOH landscape contractor Roger Cook, who brought in masons from O’Hara & Company in nearby Ashland to build the stone structure. “And it looks like it’s been there forever.”

To be most effective at masking noise, fountains need to be close to the listener — right next to your outdoor area or up against the house. But they don’t need to be elaborate or expensive. “Fountains are pretty simple,” says Roger. “They can be any vessel that holds water — a stone birdbath, a copper tub, an urn — fitted with a recirculation pump.”

But fountains are generally seasonal, often connected to a home’s water supply or irrigation system and shut off at summer’s end. And they can’t camouflage sharp, loud sounds like horns or alarms.

In the end, the TOH team decided not to install a fountain at Carlisle. The expense and trouble wasn’t worth the benefit of masking noise near the front door, since most of the outdoor seating and entertaining areas are out back.

Roger Cook sees it all the time. “Greenscaping that blocks the view of the noise’s source will always make a property more comfortable,” he says. “Even a nice lawn will make you feel farther from the road.” When designing landscapes for acoustic comfort, Hubbard suggests including evergreens for their year-round leaf structure. Among her favorites are Hetz wintergreen arborvitae, a narrow tree good for small spaces; Colorado spruce; and Hinoki cypress.

Such greenery can also soften the monolithic look of a noise-blocking fence. “Plantings create some visual interest and break up the hard line,” says Hubbard. Along the wall at Carlisle, hydrangeas, lilacs, and spirea will accent the stone with seasonal flowers and foliage, while a boxwood hedge that will grow to 6 feet will increase the sense of separation from the road.

But it’s the backyard that will provide the most tranquil retreat. There the grounds are inherently quieter, shielded from the main road by an acoustic barrier that’s better than any fence or fountain: the newly restored house itself.

“N-no,” she says, turning back to her laptop. “I’m fine.”

“You should come out with us,” Kihal says, shimmering like a mermaid in her sheath dress. “It’ll take your mind off everything.”

Oma and Opa’s bed and breakfast had been on the outskirts of town, buried deep in farm country, so off the beaten path they hadn’t gotten a paved road to her house until freshman year of high school, when the whole two mile span of road that constituted her neighborhood up and paid a contractor to do it. There’d been some kerfluffle up at town hall about it, after the fact, but Opa had just leaned down afterward, hat in hand, and told her, it’s better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

It hadn’t really made sense to her until later, when the town took over repaving it, putting in sidewalks and making it up to state code, that she realized – it was the only way it would have gotten done. No one was going to pay to pave a cowpath, especially not the people in town, who wanted Starbucks and McDonald’s and an upgrade to suburban. But once it was done, their pride hurt to think someone else was making them look bad, look impoverished and negligent – and it helped that it was the poor farmers they were turning their noses up at who did it.

…But that was neither here nor there. The real point was, the cable companies certainly weren’t going to pay to run wires out there – they only did after Oma and Opa saved up enough to get FiOS so that the guests wouldn’t complain so much about running up their data – and Oma flat out refused to get a dish, saying Opa would be up there breaking his neck every day to see how it worked. To be fair, she was probably not wrong.

So there wasn’t much reason for her to have an expectation for a club, not when her weakest trivial pursuit category is pop culture, but she’s seen the beginning of The Matrix at least twice – before she falls asleep – and this is…not that.

There’s only three clubs within an hour’s drive, and the one in town is where the Venn diagram of safe and cheap collide. It’s first floor is restaurant by day, the second a club by night. A good enough compromise, except that both floors share a lobby, leaving the glittering club crowd to stand with the evening diners, waiting for their tables.

She shifts, out of place as Kihal and her friends artfully stack their wraps on a single hanger, much to the displeasure of the coat check attendant. As one of the few sit-down restaurants that isn’t a pizza parlor, the first floor is busy, and there’s a family of five along with a few couples that look to be on their first handful of dates, pointedly ignoring the miles of legs parading past them. Shirayuki glances at the menu on the wall to distract herself from the number of inches she’s adding to that count.

This is a terrible idea. She should really just – catch a bus home, or something. Kihal poured her into lace and leather, but it can’t change that this isn’t anywhere near her scene.

“Yuki!” Kihal calls out, already standing in line. There’s no bouncer outside – there’s not nearly enough people in western Massachusetts out on a Tuesday night to make them feel selective about who they let it – but there’s one inside by the stairs, checking something people keep handing him –

Oh, an ID.

Kihal and her friends giggle as they hand over theirs, horizontal ones that don’t look like the funny vertical ones Zen and Kiki had shown her, talking about stupid under twenty-one licenses, and j-ops. The bouncer squints at them, but waves them through.

When Shirayuki nervously hands over hers, the man says “What the hell is this?”

“It’s a state ID,” she tells him, trying to hide how her hands shake. “For when you don’t, um, have a Driver’s License?”

“You don’t have a Driver’s License?”

She flushes, feeling it stretch from forehead to chest. This really isn’t the time to try to explain that she breaks out in hives thinking about driving anything more heavyweight than a golf cart. “N-no.”

The bouncer looks positively put-upon, mouth rucking up into a scowl. “You’re not twenty-one?”

“Um, no.”

With a sigh, he pulls out a big, thick black marker, and draws two huge exes on the back of her hands. “There you go,” he says tiredly, shoving her ID back in her hands.

Shirayuki stares down, uncomprehending. “But my friends --”

When her gaze skitters back up to the group, they all are glaring volumes at her, and each page says, don’t fucking rat us out. Kihal shakes her head over the bouncer’s shoulder, little more than a twitch.

Shirayuki sighs. “Never mind.”

It takes a moment for her eyes to adjust when she’s admitted into the stairwell, lit only by half-hearted strip lighting at the edge, and the scintillating colors shafting through the plastic bead curtain at the top. Kihal and her friends mount it with no problem; stiletto heels hanging half off the stairs as they bounce up, jabbering excitedly.

Shirayuki takes one look at the narrow hall and shallow stairs and feels faint. This is definitely not up to code.

She clomps up the stairs, wincing every time her toes jam against the narrow steps. There was no way for whatever old-timey carpenter to know that his luxurious townhouse would be converted into a restaurant-slash-night club a hundred seventy-odd years later, but she wishes he had thought to accommodate a full human foot with the size of them. She knows that people back in the day were smaller but -- she’s five-three for heaven’s sake. There had to have been people taller than her during the industrial revolution.

With the copious aid of the rickety railing tacked into the wall, Shirayuki finally makes it to the top of the stairs, pushing aside the strings of beads that separate her from the club.

She instantly wishes she hadn’t.

It’s dark in here, but not a cool, futuristic dark full of leather and sunglasses worn no matter the lighting conditions, but rather the same sad dimness of her hometown’s pub, just with fluorescent track lighting. The music is – certainly present, booming out of the speakers to the clear entertainment of everyone inside, but either she doesn’t listen to the right music, or this remix has lost the entire tune of the original. Under the treacherous wedges Kihal’s lent her, the floor is movie theater sticky.

“How about you, Yuki?” Kihal hooks an arm around her neck, lips cocked in a grin. “Who’s your type?”

Shirayuki blinks at her owlishly, taking in the predatory glances the other girls are giving the bar. They must have been talking about -- drinks?

“I’m not twenty-one?” She lifts both her hands, showing them the thick black exes on her hands. Kihal’s lips twitch.

“That wasn’t the question,” she tells her, squeezing her close. “Though clearly we have got to get you a better ID.”

“That one for me,” says one of the girls, tossing her head at a man at the bar, tall and broad-shouldered and looking like he could lift the sedan they came in with all of them still in it.

“I’m going to take small, hipster, and sensitive,” another one chimes in, and when Shirayuki sees a guy in thick-rimmed glasses whose legs dangle a little more than most on his bar stool she realizes -- boys. They’re talk about boys.

Panic tangles her tongue in her mouth. She doesn’t -- she doesn’t do this. She can’t just -- pick, like guys are a side order on a menu, regular fries or sweet potato.

She always gets the steamed veggie option anyway. She doesn’t know how to translate that into real life terms, but it means she’s scouring the bar with a mood edging to frantic, and of course, of course --

The crowd parts, and he’s there.

His back is to her, the cotton of his shirt pulled taut between his shoulders, and there’s just something about the way the sleeves wrinkle around his bicep, the way the thick bristle of his hair is haphazardly tousled like he just rolled out of bed, the cocky tilt to his head --

It drives her crazy. She wants to march right up to him with her big, black exes and argue with him about how a plain bagel and cocoa is not dull. She’s not boring.

She gasps, ducking her head, cheeks suddenly hot from shame. This isn’t her. She doesn’t like arguing. She hates confrontation. There’s no reason --

“Oooh,” Kihal coos, pressing their cheeks together. “The guy with the Henley making a bid for freedom? Not bad. Not bad at all.”

“N-no!” She hopes the light show the DJ is putting on makes her blush less obvious. “That isn’t --”

“Oh my.” Kihal pulls away with a grin, eyes still fixed to the bar. “Looks like he’s interested too.”

Shirayuki’s gaze darts to the bar, and he’s clearly seen her, smirk curling his lips in a way that infuriates her. He raises his beer in a mocking salute, and she snaps her gaze away.

“I’m not thirsty.”

He’s not going to ruin her night.

She promises herself that when they first wind their way onto the floor, making a circle and just enjoying the music. It’s -- good, at first. Shirayuki is definitely not as practiced as the other girls -- school dances had always seemed a little silly, when she didn’t have anyone she wanted to dance with -- but they’re eager to show her, pushing her hips into a good rhythm, showing her how to roll her body.

But it doesn’t last. Of course it doesn’t.

Boys start sidling up, slipping in behind a girl to match her rhythm. The first one that tries is sent away, and so is the second -- but the girls are clearly planning an all-night siege of the dance floor, and one by one they start peeling away, drinks in hand.

And then she’s alone again.

She can see them, if she looks hard enough -- one girl up at the bar, leaning close to hear what her date wants to whisper in her ear; Kihal on the floor, tangled up with a guy who is clearly a good kisser; and another --

Well, she’s definitely discovering some of that guy’s advanced skill set, that’s for sure.

Shirayuki’s eyes skitter away, face flushed. It’s just her now, dancing alone to music she doesn’t know or particularly like, and there must be some sign tacked to her back, because there’s not a single guy that’s come up to her. Not that she -- she doesn’t really want to have someone rubbing up against her like a cat in heat, trying to drown her in drinks but --

But it would be nice to not be ignored.

Her rhythm falters on the floor, and the bus schedule flashes temptingly in her mind’s eye. If she left now, she could make it to the stop in time for --

Heat presses all along her back, and an arm snakes over her shoulder, holding an impossibly green drink. She stares at it like it’s poison, like it came in a red solo cup and –

“You looked thirsty,” her own personal problem murmurs into her ear, or somewhere just above it.

She’s standing stock still, frozen in something between fear and annoyance, and across the floor, Kihal meets her gaze. Her eyes shift to just over Shirayuki’s shoulder, narrowing as she sees the handsome face, the distinctive scar above his eyebrow --

Shirayuki forces a smile on her lips, shaking her head, falling back into an awkward sway.

“Most guys bring a closed drink,” she tells him, like two hours make her some sort of expert on club behavior. Still, it seems like common sense.

“I considered it.” He’s moving behind her, matching her, but there’s a respectful distance between their bodies. Aside from the arm over her shoulder, they’re not touching at all, giving her plenty of space to move away. “But everything in a bottle here sucks.”

“So I should take an open container from you instead?” Strangely enough, she’s not worried about something being in it. He may have been a pain in her ass these past few weeks, but --

But there’s a difference between someone who does petty pranks, and someone who does that.

“You don’t even have a name,” she says, trying to convince herself more than anything. The green drink is -- it’s not precisely tempting, but she’s intrigued. If he thinks he knows her so well, she’s more than a little curious what he’d brought.

“I do.” His mouth sits right by her ear when he says, “It’s Obi.”

Her mouth should not feel so incredibly dry. “That’s a nice name.” She licks her lips. “But I’m not -- I can’t drink.”

She shoves one of her black exes in his face, but he catches it with his other hand, running his thumb over the bones of her hand.

“There’s a difference between can’t,” he murmurs, chest so close not she feels his breath against her back. “And not allowed.”

There’s something about his touch that makes her lean back into him. His chest stutters under hers, but he shifts closer, enough that his heat radiates against her back. “I-I shouldn’t.”

“Shouldn’t isn’t the same as won’t.” He’s a little too tall to fit her, thought the wedges help. She shivers as his breath curls over the shell of her ear, and promptly wishes she hadn’t.

She grabs the drink to cover it, taking a long sip, and –

And it’s good.

“This tastes like a Jolly Rancher,” she tells him, impressed. His chest rumbles against her back.

His hand hooks over her hip, tugging her flush against him. His knees bend so that he fits against her more naturally, and he guides her in a slow sway of her hips as she continues to sip at her drink.

“I thought you’d like that,” he rumbles, mouth grinning against her ear. “You seem weak for sweet shit.”

She wants to be angry about how close he comes with that assessment, but the alcohol calms her nerves, and the way his body is moving against her, moving her with him, feels far too nice. There’s a nice fizz under skin, like pop rocks against her tongue, and she -- she’s enjoying it. She doesn’t want it to stop.

The last song blends into the next, sliding from a pulsing beat to something slower, something that smooth grind instead of swaying hips. Between the two of them, he’s clearly the better dancer; as soon as the beat shifts, he slows them to a bare drag that sends all the heat simmering in her right between her legs.

His hand slides down her arm, leaving lightning crackling over her skin, and when he wraps it around him, her hand falling right on his nape, she can’t -- she doesn’t --

She sinks her fingers right into the bristle of his hair and tugs.

Oh god, the noise he makes. She’d worry she hurt him if it wasn’t so -- not that. She feels flushed all over, and she just -- just doesn’t know how to make it stop. Or if she wants it to.

“Are you following me around or something?” she asks, not as accusatory as she would like. “Is this part of your whole…business deal thing? With Haruka?”

“God, if I could get Haruka to comp my drinks by doing this with you, I would,” he panted against her neck, “but no.”

His hand drops from her arm, sliding down the lace of her dress, right over her ribs, thumb tracing just slightly against the slope of her breast, and --

And, oh god, she wants more of that.

“No,” he breathes, the fingers on her waste spreading wide, slipping just a little lower. “This is definitely just me.”

“Too bad.” The words come out closer to a whine than she means too, but �� god, she can feel his lips against her neck, and she – she has never done any of this, this whole kissing thing, but she’s getting really, really interested.

She swivels her hips into him, like she’s seen Kihal do, and – oh god he’s hard, right against her.

His hands catch her, holding her a bare inch away from him. “You might not want to – you might want to rethink that.”

She rolls her head to his shoulder baring her neck to him, and does it again.

“Jesus,” he hisses against her neck, lips laying hot kisses along the column of her neck. “I should have – I really shouldn’t have just stuck with following you – oh fuck.”

She’s not sure what she does, but he’s tilting her chin back, and then his lips are on hers, tongue slipping between her lips and –

“Haah,” he sighs, “that’s a really good Midori sour.”

“Are you sure?” she murmurs against his lips, smoother than she’ll probably ever be again in her life. “Maybe you should get another taste.”

He spins her around, one of his thighs slotting between hers, and then – then it is so much more than dancing. The leather skirt of her dress is riding up, and his hands are roaming everywhere, not gently, and hers are in his hair, and his tongue –

Well, it’s not where it usually is, that’s for sure.

She’s not sure how long they’re tangled like that, but he pulls back like he’s struggling to come up for air, his dick hard against her belly. He gapes at her, mouth swollen, trying to form -- thoughts, probably; she’s having the same problem herself -- but there’s something so inviting about it, about how soft his face is after she’s kissed him, and she leans back in --

His hand on her ribs stops her, and she find herself looking into his eyes, thin rings of gold catching the light. “Hey,” he breathes, “can I take you home?”

The Private Chefs Risking Their Lives to Feed the Super Rich

For private chefs, coronavirus has forced difficult conversations with their wealthy clients

Everyone’s a little stir-crazy these days, even inside the sprawling Southern California mansion where Catarina* works as a private chef. The family she’s exclusively cooked for during the last eight years canceled their vacation last week, and now they’re practicing social isolation — at least, as far as they’re concerned. “The only people who are coming and going are myself, the housekeeper, the house manager, the dog walker, the dog trainer, and themselves,” she says, “because they’re going to the office, supposedly with no one else there.”

Caterina’s clients have rich-people blinders on when it comes to their own staff, she says, which is putting everyone in the house at risk. She’s doing her best to mitigate it: She wears gloves when she’s cooking in their kitchen. She maintains six feet of social distance. But the family fails to realize that an offhand request for omelets for breakfast can send her to grocery store after grocery store in search of a stocked egg case. If anyone’s going to be Coronavirus Mary, it’s her.

Like Caterina, Ashok* has been working on salary for a wealthy Arizona family for years, cooking soigne meals and catering parties at their house. When the state’s stay-in-place orders first came out his employers let him stay home, and he used the time to take on side clients for people in lower-income brackets: “less fancy things for people who just need food on the table,” he describes via text. He also started picking up extra food and cooking through the night to deliver free meals to older people in his community.

But the situation blew up last week when, coronavirus be damned, the wife of the couple he usually cooks for was determined to host a party for two dozen people. Ashok had to shut it down. “I told her there was no way to prepare the menu because I just cannot get a hold of the food supplies,” he explained on a chef-oriented Reddit thread. “Also told her I would not force my helpers — bartender, sous, servers, etc. — to come in during this time. I don’t want to lose my job, but it’s stupidly irresponsible of me to be going shopping on a near daily basis right now as well.”

The family agreed. In fact, he negotiated three paid weeks off, after which time he will deliver meals to them without making personal contact. It’s a good thing — in the last few days he started feeling feverish. He hopes it’s exhaustion. Now he’s at home, waiting out the symptoms, asking friends to take over the volunteer cooking he was doing on the side for other elderly neighbors.

Like delivery drivers and grocery store clerks, personal chefs who make a living cooking in other peoples’ homes are being asked to put their bodies on the line each day. But for what greater good? Some are comfortable with the extra safety steps they’re taking. Others aren’t sure they can afford to turn down the work. Most know that, in the face of blithe ignorance, it’s up to them to keep themselves and their clients safe. Even the employers who claim to be diligent about social distancing seem to think their kitchen is some kind of immunity bubble and that their chefs conjure up ingredients in a virus-free poof of smoke.

According to the U.S. Personal Chef Association, there are an estimated 9,000 private chefs working in the U.S. today. Association president Larry Lynch says 90 percent of the group’s 1,000 registered members cook meals in clients’ homes rather than in the relative safety of a rented commercial kitchen. That doesn’t count the untold number of private chefs like Catarina, under contract to a single wealthy family, or gig workers who book home-based dinner parties through popular online services such as MyTable, TakeAChef, Cozymeal, and Table At Home.

Many of these larger booking companies are operating like it’s business as usual. According to a March 19 email sent to participating chefs, Table at Home did relax its reservation policies and told chefs that canceling jobs wouldn’t count against their ranking, but at the same time, the company reassured them, “We will continue to try to drive requests on our platform using our marketing and promotional campaigns. If you are still interested in working, please propose on as many opportunities as you can.”

Another service, MyChef, is using the epidemic as a recruiting tool. On March 25, it placed an advertisement on the Boston job boards: “Are you out of work due to COVID-19?” it begins. “Would you like to still advance your career by creating your own culinary business?” The ad specifies, in fact, that its service brings cooks to clients’ homes, with no mention of ensuring their safety. (At the time this article was published, Massachusetts had not issued a stay-in-place order.)

Restaurants, too, have been asked to take on private cooking gigs — but they’re largely turning them down, not just because state and city stay-at-home orders only allow pickup or delivery. Taking their equipment over to an apartment that might be contaminated? Cleaning clients’ uneaten food off their dishes? One infection among the staff could be the death blow for an ailing business. But the situation is a little more fraught for personal chefs, many of whom operate as independent contractors or small businesses.

While Lynch says that some of his members have seen demand for prepared meals rise, that’s not the case for Grace*, a personal chef in the Washington, D.C., area. Grace has hung on to two meal-delivery clients, but others have canceled after losing their own jobs. “I’m empathetic because I understand if all you can afford is to go to the grocery. But then I don’t have a client.” She makes a good chunk of her income cooking private meals. One dinner in mid-March paid enough to cover her bills for the month. Nothing is on the books for April. She’s looking into a Small Business Association loan to carry her over until the work picks back up again.

“You can’t go home at night,” the client told him. “We need you to be here so we’re all sheltering in place together.”

DeWayne*, who normally spends his evenings cooking for small parties, has taken on grocery shopping for housebound clients to make up at least some of the income he’s short. Desperate to protect his 2-year-old daughter and her immunocompromised mother, he’s staying out of other people’s homes altogether for now. But the pandemic hasn’t stopped potential customers from asking. Some people, upset they can’t go out to their favorite place, have even directed him to the restaurant’s menu and asked him to recreate it. Not wanting to burn a potential future gig, he usually saves the lecture and just tells them he’s already booked. Another chef probably said yes.

Even though most state and municipal orders only consider restaurant takeout and food delivery to be essential services, Lynch of the Personal Chef Association believes that the work of providing nutritious meals to families in this crisis time fits the definition of an essential service, too. He’s working with lawyers to draft language making the case. One personal chef Eater spoke to said his wealthy client floated the “essential services” line past him — if he stopped working, the family would be stuck ordering takeout! — but he turned them down, essentially putting himself out of work.

In webinar after webinar, Lynch is sharing the latest information about contamination from the FDA, CDC, and EPA. Their safety guidelines suggest that cooked food itself won’t transmit the virus. That said, Lynch advises personal chefs to take many extra precautions. “You have to ask the right questions of clients and make it really clear: If you decide to engage, you’ll keep social distance,” he tells them. “You’ll be sanitizing every surface, including doorknobs. They’re to stay out of the kitchen. If you’re going to serve something, put it in the fridge and move out, sanitizing on the way out.”

Bill*, who has cooked for a family of Midwestern billionaires for many years, said that these added safety measures are just an extreme form of the social distancing that he already practices with his clients, and he’s fine with it. (“It’s not a Downton Abbey kind of thing, but I respect their privacy,” he jokes.) When they’re not traveling together to one of the clients’ coastal homes, he has begun cooking meals in his own kitchen and biking or driving the food over. He now puts on gloves once he enters the house and leaves dinner in the fridge, organizing it into plastic tubs with instructions on how to heat and assemble them.

But if it’s the coming-and-going and related exposure that’s the real concern, there’s one solution that a number of rich families have proposed to their chefs: Move in. DeWayne received one offer that sounded tempting at first: Full-time work at well above his $500-a-day rate. There was a catch, though. “You can’t go home at night,” the client told him. “We need you to be here so we’re all sheltering in place together.”

Catarina’s bosses have also suggested she self-quarantine in their home. She’s been close to the family for years, but for the moment, she is holding them off, smiling away the occasional snippy comment that she doesn’t have to be there if she doesn’t want to. “I’m concerned that I might have it as an asymptomatic carrier,” is what she tells them. “You don’t want me moving in.”
