Quote
But that my song in a blue hood may ride out of these cranky wildernesses to some new morning of the centuries: that it may be fresh bread baked out of old languages.

Chapter four: Closer
Noah had made a habit of popping up around Isabel—sometimes it felt like he was everywhere. He wasn't overbearing, but his presence was constant. Whether it was in class, the library, or even at the campus café, Noah always found a way to tease her.
In class, he’d toss small crumpled pieces of paper at her when the professor wasn’t looking, aiming for her head or desk just to see her scowl. “Seriously, Noah?” she’d whisper, her irritation barely masking her amusement. Once, in the library, he sneaked up behind her, poking her shoulder just to ask if she really needed so many books for one paper. And during a study break at the café, he casually stole a fry off her plate, smirking when she swatted at him. “You’re such a pest,” she said, exasperated. But the faint smile on her lips betrayed her.
Despite his antics, Noah’s teasing never crossed the line, and for reasons she couldn’t quite explain, Isabel found herself not minding his attention as much as she should.
But everything shifted when it wasn’t Noah teasing her. One day after class, a group of his teammates bumped into her in the crowded hallway, pushing her around until her books spilled onto the floor, and she stumbled. Before she could even process what was happening, Noah was there.
“Hey, watch it!” he barked at the guys, his usual playful tone replaced by sharp protectiveness. His teammates muttered their apologies and moved on, leaving Noah crouching beside her. His expression softened as he helped her gather her books.
"You okay?" he asked, his warm, teasing grin already tugging at the corners of his lips.
Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Noah knelt beside her, effortlessly scooping up a few of the scattered volumes.
"I'm fine," she muttered, brushing a stray lock of hair out of her face. As she reached for her last book, her breath hitched. Noah had already picked it up—a worn journal she desperately hoped he wouldn’t notice. But his sharp eyes caught the distinctive cover, and he hesitated.
“Wait a second, what’s this?” he asked, holding it up and flipping it open before she could stop him.
“Noah, give that back!” Isabel's voice rose in panic as she lunged for the journal, but he stood quickly, raising it out of her reach.
Her heart raced as he flipped through the pages, his brows rising in surprise. "Whoa," he murmured, his expression softening. "I didn’t know you were a genius *and* an artist. These are... incredible."
Isabel leapt to her feet, her face a mix of outrage and mortification. “Noah! Seriously, give it back!”
He smirked, stepping back as she tried to grab it again. He raised the book higher, tilting his head playfully. “Hmm... no can do.”
Her glare sharpened. “I’m not kidding, Noah. Give me the journal.”
“Not until you agree to come to my party tonight,” he countered, his grin turning into a mischievous smirk.
Isabel froze. “You’re kidding.”
“Not at all.” He lowered the book slightly, but just as she reached for it, he held it behind his back. She stepped closer, frustration and determination glinting in her eyes.
Their faces were inches apart now, and she could feel the warmth of his breath, see the playful gleam in his dark eyes. She reached forward, her fingers brushing his arm as she tried again to snatch the journal.
“Noah...” she growled, but her voice faltered, her annoyance colliding with the tension of the moment.
“Just say yes,” he said, his voice softening. His smirk faded, replaced by something gentler as his gaze lingered on her. “Come to the party. It’ll be fun. You might even enjoy yourself.”
She hesitated, her heart pounding as the intensity of their closeness stole her words. Finally, she sighed, her voice barely above a whisper. “Fine. I’ll come. Now, give it back.”
“See? That wasn’t so hard.” He grinned triumphantly and handed the journal back, his fingers brushing hers for a moment too long.
Isabel hugged the journal to her chest, her cheeks burning. “You’re the worst,” she muttered, though her lips betrayed the hint of a smile as she turned away.
“And you’re the best artist I’ve ever seen,” he called after her, his voice laced with teasing warmth. “See you tonight, Isabel.”
