Its the end of the month and yall I am straight up exhausted lol, there's still some time before I start uni and that whole new world. I have been stuck reading Karl Polanyi's Great Transformation for a loong time, legit some 4 months because of balancing work and application work. Long story short gonna have to speed-run the book if I wanna finish it on time. Coincidentally it was on my uni reading list soo I think I pulled a lucky oopsie and saved me from reading it once I edit up my notes on that front
Also finishing up Destination Chungking by Han Suyin and Candide by Voltaire by the end of the month so I can be soo insufferable its not even funny.
The last couple books I've been reading mainly chinese authors, cause I found those books at home and some of them are genuinely amazing, the last one I read was At Middle Age by Shen Rong and it really showed me a side of China I never really hear about, especially the overworked middle age folks post Mao's era and during the Deng government.
Destination Chungking is mainly an autobiographical book of the writer when she met and fell in love with her husband before and during the Sino-Japanese war and it's a great historical account of China during that time. I wanna read some of her other works but I have no idea how tough uni is gonna be and balancing reading all the things I wanna read.
I still have quite a bit of packing to do, mainly to undo it and see if I am over packing and if push comes to shove I might just ship it to myself and wait it out, especially the books I wanna take.
P.S if anyone in the studyblr/bookblr community has some places to visit in Lisbon or Portugal in general who have second hand books in English or just highly recommended bookstores it would help a ton!

The Siege Of Lisbon (1147)
England did not consider himself prone to flights of fancy, but the man before him gave him no choice, except to fly. Licking his cracked lips, England gingerly stepped toward him (ignoring the wry glance that his commander cast at him, as if to say that ‘I told you so, I told you going on this crusade was worth it’). ‘’Uh-’’ England shut his eyes, shaking his head as shame seethed through his body (young, immortal and godly…he had no place mumbling like a boy as he outstretched a hand towards Portugal before him, arching an eyebrow). ‘’I wish you good luck in keeping your city.’’ He decided to say, instead of what’s your name, cautious of coming across as overeager - or even foolish, that he should’ve known by now.
It was his duty, England recalled quietly, as his gaze picked through the cluster of waiting soldiers (hardly professional men as England usually expected, but bound by oaths innumerable, but of course…the country would have nothing less than faithful men).
The man looked up, squinting in the sun as he nodded wearisomely; His chest heaved under his chainmail, and Portugal wondered when he’d started feeling so exhausted. The first thing that he needed was rest and the last thing (he glanced pointedly at England, who didn’t seem to notice the evident irritation) that he needed was to be sucked into a long winded conversation, of platitudes and thankfulness that itched Portugal’s skin. ‘’I’ll manage.’’ He replied curtly, nose wrinkling in disdain - a group of soldiers had broken away, pouring through the city and prying hands placed where they should not be. ‘’Don’t concern yourself with my affairs. You’ve completed your end of the oath and you’ll soon get your reward.’’
Were the others presuming him weak for such assistance?…Portugal’s gaze raked over England (sharp and narrowed, like a bird of prey picking at a carcass), wondering if that was what he was thinking. ‘’I’ve got something to be doing…’’ He nodded curtly, turning on his heel and walking away (some horrified gossip spoke of a murdered bishop, Portugal’s blood turning into furious ice, cheeks red with frustration as he slipped between the crowd of soldiers).
‘’Do you need help-!’’ England called out, rushing after Portugal. He hadn’t initially cared for the detour - but he could not help but feel a little intrigued (a strange notion, England knew, and a small part of him chided such a distraction) by the individual who had led a garrison of soldiers into these walls, breaking the siege and the hunger. Portugal did not turn back once, but England followed all the same - until finally, he found himself lost in the streets of Lisbon.
It wasn’t a place that England was hugely familiar with (never mind the fact that there were soldiers, running up and down the streets, fleeting faces that England hardly recognised as his own men). ‘’Shit-’’ He stumbled, turning in a half-circle as he looked around wildly. Colour flooded his pale cheeks, England’s feet scuffing over the cobblestones as he looked around amidst the crowds, nearly tripping and falling when he found himself caught. When he looked up, he spied a familiar (if annoyed) face. ‘’Sir-!’’ England jerked himself upright, smoothing down his armour (not that there were any creases, he just needed something to do with his hands) as he cleared his throat. Something was gravely wrong, he realised, searching Portugal’s face as he took a deep breath, cocking his head to the side. ‘’...Did someone break their oath?’’ He asked softly, swallowing a lump in his throat. None of the soldiers were recognisable immediately to him, at least not as his own, but suppose that he’d missed one. ‘’I-I can count my men. I promise-’’ England knew that he needed allies, and by God, he wanted his man on his side (and more, a feeling he could not put a name to).
‘’Mhmm, you could say that.’’ Portugal groused, the lines of his face thick with sweat and dust; The rueful expression of a man scorned. Portugal fell silent (staring long and hard at England, until the other swore that he burned). There was nothing deceptive about England’s words, and eventually Portugal relented with a scoff, shaking his head disdainfully. ‘’Honestly, you ask some people to do you a favour…’’ Longing coiled deep in his bones, as Portugal sighed - head in hand as he stalked past England, through the winding streets and towards the gate. There had been a man, or so they claimed, stood there splitting the city-gates wide open - and bled a pathway for them.
Men’s tongues had already started spinning that legend, and one that wiped away Portugal, like lines in the sand; And once more, Portugal felt a rise of dread in the pits of his stomach, red-crescents dug into the palms of his hands as he took a deep breath (only digging deeper into his skin as England’s hand reached out for his shoulder, a furtive glance at England like embers in a fireplace). ‘’What? Go count your men already, what are you standing here for?’’
‘’Ah-!’’ England blinked, jerking as Portugal’s voice cut through his reverie (a menagerie of thoughts that trooped like soldiers, all buckling and crashing into one another as England quickly recalled his duties). Without another word, England withdrew his hand and marched off, barking orders at anyone who would listen to him - anyone who carried his banner quickly swept up as they formed a row; The counting didn’t take long, England’s expression pinched as he shook his head. Of course, England thought ruefully, they were good men (he was), faithful and loyal men (he was) and there was no way that any of them wou-
‘’So?’’ Jesus Christ, could Portugal stop sneaking up like that? ‘’No. It was none of them.’’ England huffed, an eyebrow arching as he turned to stare quietly at Portugal. ‘’It would be none of them, the young man ground out. ‘’I would have nothing less than faithful men following me. I have nothing else to report.’’ England stood, as tense as a drawn bow (poised, his spine held rigid like a taut string).
‘’Faithful men?’’ Portugal arched an eyebrow, crossing his arms as he leaned back ponderously. ‘’God really mean that much to you…?’’ Of course, God was important to all of them - and the look on England’s face (startled, slightly insulted) was a little more interesting than the faint, furtive glances the taller had been casting him since he got here, but Portugal was not particularly interested in piety today. ‘’More than gold?’’ A sharp smile broke his features, a sword splintering bark as Portugal turned to face him. ‘’More than wealth?’’ (This was a trap.) England swallowed thickly. (He allowed himself to be caught) ‘’An oath is an oath.’’ England replied plainly. ‘’And I stick to them.’’

Museu Arqueologico do Carmo & Museu da Cerveja - Lisbon, Portugal
We started today off with a visit to Carmo Convent, which is now an amazing archaeological museum. Construction on the convent began in 1389 and by 1551 it had been expanded to house 70 clergy and 10 servants. It was significantly damaged in the 1755 earthquake and had to be abandoned. In 1800, minor repairs were made and the military took over the space. In 1864, the space was donated to the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists and turned into a museum.
It is definitely a work-in-progress, however, the artifacts that are on display are impressive. We were amazed at what was displayed in the convent, as well as the actual ruins of the convent. Well worth the time and the $4/person admission fee.
Inside the convent - no roof, beautiful arches, and lots of displays of pediments and columns in this area.
Inside there are multiple rooms filled to the brim with historical artifacts from around the world.
Top to bottom: porcelain tile panels depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ, tomb of a king, an elaborately decorated chest, and a mummy.
We visited the museum for over and hour, so many artifacts to take in - we were glad that we decided to go inside and explore. We wandered to the back side of the convent, where there were some nice views.
St. George's Castle was visible on the treed hillside.
Lisbon Cathedral was our next destination - we opted to not go inside.
We continued our tour, finding a vista with lovely views of the Tagus River, as we made our way toward the National Pantheon.
The National Pantheon - which houses the tombs of Portugal's major historic figures. We opted to not go inside, small admission charge or free with Lisbon Card.
A few of the beautifully tiled facades we came across as we made our way around Lisbon today.
Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora - a Catholic monastery. We walked the perimeter and enjoyed a little shade on a bench in the courtyard.
Courtyard at the monastery.
Our next stop - the Beer Museum! Doug, waiting for our tour in the regal "Beer Tour Chair".
Our tour guide, Daniel, was amazing and we learned a bit about the history of beer during the tour. We shared the tour with 4 young people from England, they were delightful. Part of the tour is a tasting, everyone chose a beer from a huge refrigerator and we were given the option of sharing the beers or just tasting our own selection. Luckily, everyone was willing to share and we had a great time visiting and tasting the beers.
We enjoyed a couple beers and lunch at the restaurant at the Beer Museum - inside is very fancy dining, outside is way more casual. On my plate is bolinho de bacalhau (salt cod croquette, a local favorite). Doug was complaining because he had to wait to drink his beer while I took the picture!
The Beer Museum is located on Praca do Comercio - a beautiful plaza along the river. Below are scenes from around the plaza, including the Cais das Colunas (an historic pier with stone pillars). There was a lot happening on and around the plaza.
We were ready to head back to our place, we had covered a lot of territory and needed to put our feet up for a bit. On our way back, we passed by Pink Street - an Instagram hot-spot - EVERYONE was taking a selfie along this street. Pretty crazy!

“Ring of Fire”
Season 7, Episode 6 First US Airdate: October 2, 1993
Shredder plots to assemble a heat ray in Lisbon’s Cathedral.
The “Vacation in Europe” side-season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues with “Ring of Fire”. Michael Edens is the writer of this adventure, following on from his work on “Tower of Power” at the beginning of this arc.
Today we join the Turtles in Lisbon, capital of Portugal, as they watch a festival unfold on the street from their vantage point in an olive warehouse. Donatello is hard at work on a pizza-making machine and today is voiced by Greg Berg: if you’re keeping track, that means we’re now down to only two of the Turtles having their regular voice actors. Tired of being boxed in, Michaelangelo breaks off from the team to go exploring.
Over in Dimension X, Krang’s Scheme of the Day involves magnifying the sun’s beams to create a heat ray. (Yet again, this does nothing to resolve the current situation with the Technodrome.) To do so will require a special kind of sand, which can be used to forge a lens capable of withstanding any level of heat, and this can only be found in Lisbon’s Bull Ring. Shredder is offended after being shown a map, insistent that he knows where Portugal is; Krang explains that “it’s not for you – this is the educational portion of our show!” He provides Shreds with a key that will grant him access to the bell tower of the city’s cathedral, so that he can set up the ray there, with the magnifying beams being set up in the facing square. Shredder leaves to carry out the plan, accompanied by Rocksteady, Bebop and a group of Rock Soldiers.
Michaelangelo wanders through the sewers, aiming on heading in the direction of the nearest beach. He emerges in what initially appears to be a deserted part of town before getting caught up in an oncoming crowd; the Running of the Bulls is taking place. If you’ve ever seen that one animated GIF of an alarmed Mikey, it originates here. A trio of bulls chases him down the street, with one of them eventually knocking him into a fountain. The same bull then charges at the stone structure, shattering one of its walls and causing the water to flood the street. This carries Mikey back down the sewers, eventually leading him to the beach, where he engages in some surfing with a makeshift board.
Nearby, April is accompanied by Vernon on camera and Irma (doing nothing in particular), as she reports in her capacity as “European Correspondent” about the building of a new luxury hotel by the McDonald Crump organisation, a call-back of sorts to a character introduced in “Raphael Meets His Match”, although as the Vacation in Europe episodes are set immediately after the season four opener, that technically hasn’t happened yet. Bebop and Rocksteady are also in the vicinity, being guided through the process of emptying a dump truck carrying sand by Shredder. When they’re unable to do so, he points out a control on the dashboard marked “DUMP LEVER”. The mutants defend themselves by reminding Shredder that they don’t read Portuguese – or any other language, for that matter – and would never have known what the text, which is in English, would have said.
Vernon is finishing up after the completion of April’s report and happens to be standing behind the dump truck when the sand is unloaded, winding up underneath it. This leads to a confrontation between Shredder’s bunch and the Channel 6 crew, with the masked villain capturing April. Irma is also caught, identified by Rocksteady as “that cute Irma dame” - I guess he has a thing for her for the purposes of this episode. Michaelangelo hears this from the beach while surfing and saying “cowabunga” repeatedly, and alerts the other Turtles.
Shredder sends the contingent of Rock Soldiers accompanying him to attack Michaelangelo. The lone Turtle responds by using the construction site to his advantage, hurling an enormous metal pipe at the stone warriors that crushes them: to all intents and purposes it appears that we just watched Michaelangelo kill a bunch of guys, something that I never would have expected to see in this episode going in. Bebop commandeers a power shovel and is about to use it to give Mikey a taste of his own medicine as the first act ends.
Act two opens with Donatello using a bulldozer to tip over the power shovel. During the resulting commotion, Shredder unwittingly drops the bell tower key provided to him by Krang. He goes on to chase the Turtles into a pit using the power shovel, driving off in it while Bebop and Rocksteady escape in the dump truck. Moments later, Vernon stumbles upon the bell tower key, which April determines must be integral to Shredder’s plan.
Looking for a way to navigate through the ongoing festival activities without drawing the attention of the Turtles, Shredder turns the power shovel and dump truck into makeshift parade floats. The Turtles wind up seeing this anyway, but are unable to negotiate the crowd to do anything about it. As a workaround, the green teens use their grappling hooks to scale a nearby building.
Vernon has split off from April and Irma, looking to obtain footage of Lisbon for Burne rather than investigate Shredder’s scheme. By coincidence, he finds himself filming the Bull Ring while Shredder is there, and is identified by the masked villain as “that wimp reporter”. The cowardly newsman faints after being captured by Rocksteady and Bebop, but the Turtles step in to save him. Our green teens cannonball into the mutant henchmen, causing them to drop their weapons. Shredder hits back by freeing a bull, which charges toward the Turtles as act two reaches its conclusion.
Act three kicks off with Raphael using his bandana to taunt the bull, and soon finds himself riding it back into the pen. After being thrown off, the other Turtles step in to provide their scores for his performance. With Shredder having escaped again, Donatello takes a sample of the bull ring’s sand to determine what he’s up to.
April and Irma wander through Lisbon attempting to determine what the key found on the construction site grants access to, before winding up at the cathedral. After successfully gaining entry, they discover Shredder setting up the ray machine beneath the building. April begins filming this until the ledge beneath her crumbles, delivering her directly to the villainous trio. Irma demands that Shredder give April back, threatening that if he refuses, he’ll have to answer to her. This does little to resolve the situation, and ultimately both ladies are tied to a giant lens atop the cathedral. Only an hour remains before sunrise, and when the rays hit the lens both will be burned to a crisp.
Back at the olive warehouse, Donatello determines that the Bull Ring’s dirt is “ultra silicone sand”, and that Shredder must be using it to make an advanced lens. With the sun now rising, an odd scene unfolds where Irma begins singing a song about how she hates to see the morning sun come up. April has a plan, instructing her friend to rock (physically, rather than musically) as soon as the first rays of light break through.
Flashes of light dazzle the Turtles through the windows of the warehouse, which Donatello recognises as Morse Code. By interpreting his, he learns of April’s current predicament, and the team head off in the Turtle Van to intervene. They arrive just in time to see Shredder’s ray emerge from the ground. Meanwhile April and Irma tilt the lens restraining them, pin-pointing the heat to singe their ropes. Both rejoin the Turtles at ground level as they see off Rocksteady and Bebop. The mutant duo escape with Shredder, the machine now operating at full capacity. Donatello has a plan to stop it, ordering the other Turtles to hurl their Turtlecoms into Shredder’s contraption. He attaches his own Turtlecom to a megaphone, placing this among the cathedral’s bells, which upon being rung, create a vibration which shatters both the giant lens and the ray machine.
Back in the olive warehouse, Splinter congratulates the Turtles on their victory, encouraging them to go out and join the festivities. The green teens are still sore from today’s adventure, and would rather spend the time recovering instead. Splinter responds to this by engaging in a weird animation where he tilts his head around, smiling and winking. Uh, okay.
Michael Edens has a varied track record on the show, having co-penned with Mark Edens several season three adventures from the awful “Camera Bugged” to “The Ninja Sword of Nowhere”, one of the most exceptional stories of that year. “Ring of Fire” doesn’t sit at either extreme, being instead staggeringly dull, perhaps the least necessary TMNT episode thus far. Yet another uninspired invention by Krang results in the Turtles and the Technodrome crew doing much the same thing they’ve done countless times prior. There’s zero novelty at this point in seeing April and Irma get kidnapped or the Turtles battle Rocksteady and Bebop on a construction site, all of this has been done before in better episodes. Even the idea of the Turtles riding bulls was done in “Mutagen Monster” - an episode written by Michael and Mark Edens, as it turns out, and one that I didn’t find particularly thrilling, though it’s a cut above this.
Voice actor attrition has never been as bad as it is here, with Rob Paulsen (Raphael), James Avery (Shredder) and now Barry Gordon (Donatello, Bebop) all absent at this point. Hal Rayle, Jim Cummings and Greg Berg do their best in their roles as respective substitutes, but I feel that one of the elements most critical to the show’s success is so depleted that the finished product is dramatically suffering. The filler status of these episodes is glaringly apparent now, the novelty of seeing the Turtles exploring Europe long having worn off. I can’t wait until all of this is behind us and we can move on to the proper season seven episodes of the show, but we’re not even halfway done with this vacation yet; next time the Turtles will be in Dublin for “The Irish Jig is Up”.

Tuesday September 3, 2024
I could hardly sleep last night, anxious to get started on this long awaited adventure!
We were up at six, dressed to hike and had the final sorting of what goes is the pack and what stays in the suitcase. Since our room had a scale, we determined our final weights, which was of course more than our “practice pack” weights!
Packs with water (and hiking sticks):
Susan 18.2 lbs
Jeff 20.8 lbs
We had breakfast and the hotel arranged for a driver to take us to the Lisbon Oriente train station. We arrived about 30 minutes before our train, which was perfect. We were relieved to find that Portugal followed the same system as virtually all European cities, easy for us to figure out. We had 2 seats, facing backwards though, in the first class compartment. We read, napped, read and napped for the three hour journey.
We arrived in Vila Nova de Gaia just after noon. I’d selected this station on the south side of the river as it looked like it had the shortest walk to the Cathedral, which is the official start of the Camino Portuguese (you can walk it from Lisbon and even further south, but it’s not well marked or supported).
We walked the 1.7 miles to Cathedral using Google Maps, with some uncertainness! Over a viaduct and a large bridge, that had a lane for the street car, and for pedestrians (cars must have been underneath). The Cathedral is undergoing renovations, so there was some confusion about where to go to get our credentials stamped. While in line to pay to gain entry to the cathedral, pilgrims coming out wished us our first buen camino and I was surprised at the wave of emotion that washed over me!
We got our stamp and headed out into the hot and windy afternoon. We saw few official markers, but basically we just had to get down the hill to the river, and keep the water on the left!
The waterfront was active with walkers, cyclists, runners and people on electric scooters. It was mainly a well developed waterfront, with buildings in various states of repair, from very nice to almost bombed out looking!
About 4 miles in, we were ready for a break. We were almost at the end of the river, and we stopped at a shady spot and had a coke and a snack from my bag while we rested our feet and legs.
We rounded the corner, then we were walking along the ocean, and it was stirred up today! There were people on the beaches, but no one swimming and the life guard stations had red flags flying. We walked through a beautiful park, where we were delighted to find public toilets!
We continued up the coast until we came to Matosinhos, where I’d booked accommodation through Expedia - a nice updated house with rooms, a common hot tub in the little courtyard and breakfast in the morning. We asked about a stamp for our credential, and were directed to go to the Tourist Information office at the beach. We showered, did some sink laundry, and headed out to get our stamp and some real food. Lucky for us, the TI was open until 7p and we got our stamp and bought scallop shells for our packs (signifies we are pilgrims), but not good was most restaurants don’t start serving until 7p and we were hungry and exhausted. We searched until we found a family run seafood place where we shared Couvert (olives, bread and some kind of spread), a fresh salad and seafood rice for two and a carafe of green wine. It really hit the spot, and I felt good about being adventurous eating (taking the heads off my own prawns now)!
Back to the room for some tea and chocolate (I’ve carried two bars this far and it’s time to lighten my load). San, Matt and Janet are at the MSP airport and we’re so excited to see them tomorrow!
Walked 8.4 miles (average 87 miles)
Spent $238 on food and accommodation
Pilgrim’s Blessing:
Almighty God, you who has called your servant Abram out of the Chaldean city of Ur and watched over him during all his travels, you, who were the guide of the Hebrew people in the desert, we ask you to take care of us, your children, who, for the love of your name, start our pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
Be for us companion on the way, guide at the crossroads, strength in weariness, defense in danger, shelter on the way, shade in the heat, light in the darkness, comfort in despair and firmness in our intentions.
So that we, with your help, might arrive safely at the end of our journey and enriched by grace and virtues, might return safely to our homes, filled with everlasting joy.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever.
May the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be with us and remain with us always.
Amen
