"SPOILER WARNING FOR THE MOVIE but like idc if it was the intention or not, half the narrative surrounds the fact that the four mains and tons of other citizens should have had the ability to transform and it was taken from them, forcing them to work underground without ever knowing they could be anything more. D-16 has a fuckin mental break at the discovery that they were all BORN with the ability to change and then robbed of it. And being granted the ability to do so is euphoric to them. Anyway I know that's not exactly estrogen but I bet if she transitioned it would have at least fixed some things. Or she would have just been a girlboss. Win/Win" - @sibillascribbles08

Oh boy oh boy

This idea has been percolating for YEEEEEARS. It's a SPG fanfic (ofc) based primarily on the story-song 'The Suspender Man' with some references to 'Steamboat Shenanigans.' Like my recent fic 'It's All Gone to Rust,' it takes the core of the song and expands on it to apply to the Walter family-- in this case, the Walter Twins circa the late 1900s.

In The Suspender Man, Rabbit is the one to encounter the titular character, a banjo player she encounters in a swamp who "[sold] his soul to the bog" for prodigious music skills (very Robert Johnson).

In '2-Cent Souls,' Rabbit isn't alone. She is following Peter Walter II, aka Two, her creator's first son. The Walter family had been taking a trip to the South on the steamboat of their family friend (Uncle Ralphie), and had docked for the night at a small town. Two woke that night hearing distant banjo music and, entranced, snuck off the boat. Rabbit then accompanies him to find the source of the music, and they stumble upon the Suspender Man. When the Suspender Man cryptically asks for something in exchange for his music, Two finds a 2-cent coin has appeared in his pocket, and gives it over. When Rabbit finally gets Two away from the music, Two is overcome with lethargy, and Rabbit carries him back to his bed on the boat.

Two doesn't recover the next day, and his twin, Peter Walter III, aka Three, knows something is wrong. The town and boat starts to empty as more and more people start to congregate in the swamp, and it falls to Three, the robots, and a Deaf girl from the town (an OC currently named Lolette) to break The Suspender Man's spell and save Two's soul.

It's been five months since they lost Raph, due to Donatello's own blunder no less. The soft shell hasn't spoken a word since then, and at this point he doesn't really plan to. Of course his family has their concerns, all of them expressing them in different ways, but is any of that enough to break his self made barrier? Even a message from Raph himself?

Oh boy this is...quite an ask. Especially bc fanfic recs are so personal? What I think is a good fic will be vastly different from other people. I have a really high angst tolerance, so please double check tags with these. Also keep in mind that I mainly read donnie-centric fics.

What if donnie gets trapped in the prison dimension with leo? I’m usually not a fan of changing plot points in the rise movie or suicidal leo, but this fic is the exception. It is VERY well written and has some of the best exchanges between the disaster twins. You WILL be scared for the characters and your heart WILL be crushed. Proud to say I was here for this fic since chapter 1 bc that NEVER happens with me

Donnie Villain AU with a twist. He really gives off megamind vibes. DO NOT BE FOOLED. THERE’S A REASON EVERYONE IS OUT OF CHARACTER IN THE BEGINNING. I almost slept on this fic and it became one of my favorites. It’s the type of fic that I can read over and over and over.

Turning Purple by Lizardstuff | 48,123 [ON-GOING]

Donnie slowly gets more and more sick post rise movie and the rest of the characters must find out what’s wrong and find a cure. THIS ONE’S FOR YOU, MEDICAL NERDS. Author has done research and any inaccuracies have gone over this EMT’s head. I reread this one every chapter update and every time I’m haunted by “the blueberry french toast paragraph” No I will not explain further, go read it.

MY TOP FIC RECOMMENDATION

Spider's Web with Strings Attached by CurlySwirly | 125,661 [ON-GOING]

Donnie and Leo get kidnapped and are forced to fight in the battle nexus. This is my pick for the most well written fanfic and most in canon characterization with ALL the characters. You will HEAR the characters not just through the dialogue but also through the writing itself. As the reader, you will be beaten down and have your heart crushed mercilessly which makes the pay off the most rewarding, satisfying experience that I've personally ever felt with a fanfic. This fic lives in my head rent free and I think about it at least once a day. It is my all time favorite rise fic and I highly recommend it.

• This fic is feels just like an episode of rise. It’s lighthearted with the kind of goofy brand of humor we all love from rise. Also it mentions Donnie’s love of botany! What could be better?

Can I dream for a few months more? By ChipFunk

• This is a big comfort fic for me. In summary, his family supports Raph while he deals with hypersomnia. Classic hurt/comfort and sweet family moments!

Brickwalls and Backalley Brawls by Flannel_Terrapene

• For anyone who loves the classic TMNT Casey and Raph vigilante duo this is a fantastic take on that but for rise! Delightful with fun banter and in character I highly suggest giving it a read.

I've Got You Under My Skin by Cass_Phoenix

• Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge fan of Krang after effect fics. This is such a fantastic look to how things would go if the Krang stayed in Raph’s head as head mates. It’s still a WIP but has a fantastic sense of foreboding that makes updates delightful! Be mindful of tags and triggers .

In which fate stains by Udbsken

• One of the best character studies I’ve ever read through the framing device of platonic soulmarks. Touches on a almost all characters but highly suggested to fans of Splinter. I cannot suggest this one enough!

Off Colors: Contrasts by @sibillascribbles08

• Probably my favorite separated au! Follows the plot of the show closely including all the fun goofy episodes and keeps the characters very true to show. Includes such amazing things as: lots of brains and brawn, lil brother Raph, Casey & Mikey friendship, and plenty of April O’Neil! Honestly please give this a read I promise you won’t regret it!
