If you know anyone who writes music, today has probably been a very crappy day for them.
Finale, one of the most dominant programs for music notation for the past 35 years, is coming to an end. They’re no longer updating it or allowing people to purchase it, and it won’t be possible to authorize on new devices or if you upgrade your OS.
I’ve personally been using Finale to write music for about 20 years (since middle school!). It’s not something that I depend on for money, and my work should be compatible with other programs, so I’ll be fine, but this is very, very bad news for lots of people who depend on this software for their livelihood.
(cut added so info added to reblogs doesn't get buried!)
The shittiest thing is that this was preventable. From a comment on Finale’s post:
As a former Tech Lead on Finale (2019-2021) I can tell you this future was avoidable. Those millions of lines of code were old and crufty, and myself and others recognized something had to be done. So we created a plan to modernize the code base, focusing on making it easier to deliver the next few rounds of features. I encouraged product leadership to put together a feature roadmap so our team could identify where the modernization effort should be focused.
We had a high level architecture roadmap, and a low level strategy to modernize basic technologies to facilitate more precise unit testing. The plan was to create smart interfaces in the code to allow swapping out old UI architecture for a more modern, reliable, and better maintained toolset that would grow with us rather than against us.
But in the end it became clear support wasn’t coming from upper management for this effort.
I’m sad to see Finale end this way.
Finale also could allow people who own the software to move it to their new devices in the future, but Capitalism. It’s a pointless corporate IP decision that only hurts users.
There are three main options for those of us who are having to switch: Dorico, MuseScore, or Sibelius.
Sibelius has been Finale’s main competitor for as long as I can remember. It currently runs on a subscription model (ew). The programs are about equal in terms of their capabilities, though I’ve heard Finale has more options for experimental notation. (I’ve used both; Finale worked better for my workflow, but that’s probably just because I grew up using it.)
Dorico is the hip new kid and I’d personally been considering switching for quite a while, but it’s ungodly expensive (about twice what Finale cost at full price). Thankfully, they are allowing current Finale users to purchase at a price comparable (well, still 50% higher) to what Finale used to cost with the educator discount. It apparently has a very steep learning curve at first, though it is probably the best option for experimental notation.
MuseScore is open source, which is awesome! But it also has the most limitations for people who write using experimental notation.
I haven’t used MuseScore or Dorico and will probably end up switching to one of those, but it’s also not an urgent matter for me. Keep your musician friends in your thoughts; it’s going to be a rough road ahead if they used Finale.

Classical Music Suites Bracket
Hi everyone! After the success that the symphony bracket has been so far I thought I'd keep the fun going by hosting the suites bracket that was initially discussed on that blog. The format will remain quite similar, but I'll clarify this when the tournament starts which will likely be sometime in December. There is only the one mod, so please be patient with me (oh also she/they pronouns please).
I'm accepting submissions, so here's some guidelines for that:
Please make submissions to the ask box.
You can include propaganda if you would like to but you don't have to.
If there is a specific recording that you would like me to use please specify it in your submission.
For the purposes of this bracket suite is fairly broad, though it will be restricted to suites with at least 2 movements. Please don't submit works that are other forms (eg. symphony, concerto, opera etc). If the mod determines that a submission is not clearly a suite then a poll will be created to determine general consensus.
The number of suites to make it into the bracket is yet to be determined, but it will be either 16, 32, or 64, depending on the number of submissions.
As submissions come in, I will add them to the bottom of this post every so often.
Also as an extra little novelty, feel free to guess the suite, movement, and instrument of the sheet music in the header image :)
Tagging @symphonybracket to credit the idea as that is where the idea was first talked about and much of the format has come from.
Feel free to share this post, ask any questions you may have, and of course start submitting!

Composer Jean Sibelius was born on this day in 1865. Happy Sibelius day and Finnish Music Day.
Sibelius is Finland’s best-known and most widely performed composer.
His drinking club was immortalised by artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela in this 1894 painting. The artist is on the far left of the painting, Sibelius far right, and conductor Robert Kajanus in the middle. Composer Oskar Merikanto is passed out on the table.

The old and storied kingdom of Finale has fallen. The neighboring lordships (Sibelius and Dorico) each seek to claim the wealth and lands of the fallen realm. Among the peasantry, there are whispers of a revolution (working to update Musescore to professional quality) but is the citizenry ready to accept a fledgling democracy?
The druids of the forest (Lilypond users) have much knowledge. They can guide you to power if you seek it, but the price is high (you must learn to code).

Pay no attention to what the critics say. Remember, a statue has never been set up in honour of a critic!

The seeding is done!
Tumblr media
I've finished seeding the brackets! The posts with the first few concerti will go up shortly. Please note that the bracket is seeded so that the most popular contestants will go up against the least popular contestants first, so please don't be upset if you feel that the matchup is "unfair" - that's intentional.

Mahler 7
song of the night 💫🫶 i can’t even express how much i love this one… seriously cannot recommend that people listen to it enough. the end is so happy, the opening so iconic. as a kid literally one of my fav cds was the ashkenazy sso one. praying someone who’s more eloquent can write something to do this one justice. who doesn’t love a symphony with cowbells anyways 💝
Here's what Mahler 7 is all about. It's like if a symphony was a bug. It's the first piece that comes to mind when I think of the phrase "creepy crawly." But it's also like if an ice cream sundae was a symphony. It combines the whipped-smooth textures of cello and horn (and wagner tuba!) with sprinkles of mandolin and cowbell that you can crunch between your teeth. It's like sleep paralysis demon music if your sleep paralysis demon was also in love with you. It's the soundtrack of you getting pulled down to hell by little tiny sprites that are also laughing the whole time. It feels like a puzzle or a trick, something you have to work at with your tongue for a bit before it will crack open. And then bite you. I think that RECORDING MATTERS more than any other symphony! The texture of the percussion in particular is very fickle! My favorite is the one linked in the Spotify playlist (Haitink Bavarian Radio Symphony), but I put a YouTube recording I like below. If you only have time to listen to one movement, listen to 3 (the scherzo). It's the most quintessentially 7. It will make you feel like the below image (from the symphony's wiki page). However, my favorite part of the symphony is in the first movement (I made a little post about it here) and my personal favorite movement is the finale. :) CRUNCHY!
