to begin with, i have a litle post as a warning for laito headcanons, bc for me, laito is one of the most complex and difficult characters to undertands, so he is so much more than a perverted character and a leg lover (anime laito is terrible guys 💀💀)

his looks and selfcare

i think laito is a man that do care for his appearence, he ofc takes multiple showers in a week and loves to smell good, he often buy new perfumes with different scents just bc he loves it.

but unlike reiji, laito does not spend too much time doing skin care, he uses is good and never ending facial soap, its a bar of soap, a mint one. and about his hair, he also uses the same shampoo and conditioner, with argan and a little herb scent. laito loves cold showers, but quick, he is not a man to take his time, he is fast and dont waste time. mostly bc i belive laito dont really like being naked... alone.

i think laito do use sunscreen, bc he wants to have good skin as he ages (even if he is a vampire, let the man belive it).

and sometimes when laito is down i do belive he uses concealer to cover his eyebags, this doesnt happen often but has happened in the past.

something laito enjoy about getting ready is his hair, he uses dry repair creams, hair texturizer and hair oils to keep his ends healthy.

and as for clothes, i belive laito likes soft colors and not so saturated, but not pastel colors! maybe bc i also belive that colors affect his vision, like when people dont like to see neon colors in sports clothes, thats laito but not only with neon colors, he doesnt like too flashy and explosive colors. actually he loves the color blue.

i think laito is aware of how handsome he is, laito has a marked jaw, a slightly upturned nose and slanted eyes with a seductive and cautious gaze, but as well, his gaze can turn into a penetrating and deep one, making everyone tremble for how intense his eyes are, and not tremble in a good way, laito is scary.

i think laito also has pretty lips, but a little detail i like too, is that laito used to bite the skin of his lips in his early teen ages, giving himself tiny wounds. but Reiji always told him to use lip balm to heal these same wounds, although this only happened at certain times of the year, or sometimes when laito past through a stressful situation. over time he has been able to realize and apply his lip balm in time, leaving laitos lips with a slight shine always, it became a habit that he maintains, even if laito dont bite the skin of his lips anymore.

i also think that he instead of exercising, laito prefers to do another type of physical movement, such as walking or running, he does not like to lift weight to get muscle since he sees it illogical if he has inhuman strength, this gives him strong legs and calves of steel, he always shows his calves as a pride for himself. that also give him a lot of stamina not just for his body, but also his mind. running seems to be a perfect way to clear laito's mind. but that does'nt take away the wide shoulders, it runs in the family.

a little detail i like is that laito might have more moles in his body, like one in his hand, other in his neck, another one in his calves, and his back! but he doesnt get to see those.

and finally, unlike his olders brothers, shu and reiji, laito can grow a beard but he does'nt like it, he feels old.

random stuff

so, its no secret laito loves games, but i think laito does not like online or digital games, he is more into the classic, ofc its pool and darts, but he also likes board games, dice, marbles and everything related to something physical, does not have much interest in the digital world.

as a said before, laito loves perfumes, does not use the same one for a long time and constantly buys the last ones on the market to try them, not all of them are to his taste but he enjoys to collect them, he likes the flashy bottles.

and as a plus to laito, i think he is more romantic than you think, how so? he totally has a poetry noteboook where he writes every little pretty and romantic feelings laito has, i like to think he also do this with weird dreams so he can't forget them.

oh, and laito has a sensitive tongue, no reason for it, he can't tolerate spicy food or too sweet / salty, he hates it, reiji makes special food for him sometimes so he can enjoy his cooking as well. laito appreciates this.

and as i said before with shu, laito is such a goosip as well, but he is a bad goosip, laito likes to know everything about someting or someone, just bc he thinks he has to know what he likes, completly. that's a reason he has more interaction with his bat relatives, so they can tell him everything.

i like to think that laito is really jealous, like a lot.

i think laito has a secret interest in humans and their way of living, specifically, he is interested in religious topics, he had read Bibles although he found them boring, so prefers to see them captured in movies, and it is even better when they have another meaning than something literal, such as a biblical reference like mother or lamb. but still laito can't get how faith works for humans.

i think laito deep down, want to be more close to shu, mostly for his music collection and stuff but dont know how to adress him, so he just ocasionally ask shu for his disc and vinyls, i like to think that laito wishes to speak more to shu but its so distant that he never tries.

i think laito is also a pranker, like, not with everyone special, mostly his uncle, he likes to hide stuff from him or surprise him by appearing suddenly next to him, he does that to his brothers sometimes, to ayato and reiji mostly.

Hi, I just finished the AA trilogy with my bf and we fell in love with it! I found your blog the other day, and it sometimes feels like you're the only one giving correct takes on these characters' writing and the minutiae of everyone's inner worlds (or the fumbling of, see Godot).

I just got here, but, something that's been bothering me about the fandom's approach to the sequel trilogy is like... the imperialist undertones are glossed over, or swept under the rug. Researching "The Dark Age of the Law" and beyond puts a sour taste in my mouth. And with Khura'in the country vs Kurain the village? It all feels racist at best (the concept of the Divination Seance gives me squick). If you have the time, I'd love to hear your thoughts about AA5 and AA6 in relation to the world of AA as a whole. the tl;dr of it is that i do think they are genuinely bad enough additions to the franchise that they have signed mainline ace attorney's death warrant. picking out the dark age of the law stuff and aa5 and the imperialism in aa6 you've pretty much honed right in on my two biggest critiques

however i do want to say that although they're being bundled and sold as a 'second trilogy' that's not quite accurate either experientially when playing the games or from a development perspective. aa4 had scenario design/creative direction by series creator shu takumi, with the art director being kazuya nuri (responsible for character design for rise from the ashes in the series previous to this); aa5+6 was spearheaded by takeshi yamazaki, who had been with the franchise since its first game, with the slightly less tenured takuro fuse on art direction/character design. yamazaki and fuse are not without skill, but i think they're both significantly less skilled than takumi and nuri respectively and. it really shows.

pair that with the fact that aa5 and 6 fundamentally do not follow up on any of ace attorney 4's established characters or plots more than superficially, i don't think it's particularly useful to critique 4-5-6 as if they're a single body of work in the same way the trilogy is. apollo justice isn't a perfect* ace attorney game but it's a good one.

anyway i think buying into the 'dark age of the law' stuff in ace attorney 5 necessitates cheapening all of the events preceding it. the implication that 1. the law wasn't that bad before but it Is Now and 2. a single case was the tipping point for whether or not the entire legal system would be bad just ruins the times when ace attorney has managed to acknowledge corrupt systems as a massive source of problem for the everyman in the past

For starters, that phoenix quote. He would not fucking say that. I don't think there has ever been a point during or leading up to phoenix's career where he thought the legal system had 'glory' he would then want to restore it to. you seem to get it so im not gonna harp on this too much on this but. jesus christ

then, then there's fact that even by stating the most basic details about the franchise's events undermines the whole premise. like okay notice that the corruption that happens during the trilogy/investigations spinoffs is coming from all of the actual agencies that represent law and order/the system: the prosecutors, the police, and the prosecutorial investigation committee. however in aa5 the thing they choose to paint as responsible for supposedly unprecedented levels of corruption in the legal system is defense attorneys resorting to more drastic means, and the general public; aka not the people who are responsible for upholding the legal system but the people who are victimized by it and in opposition to it.

i don't think this was an intentional choice as much as it's just sloppy, inconsiderate, and contrived writing.

aa6 is just flat out racist. 'imperalist undertones' is i would say the gentlest way you could phrase it. like. japanese characters going to a made up south asian country that needs to be taught how to govern itself to quash its internal rebellion is like. so high on the yikes meter.

making a bunch of fake 'ethnic sounding' nonsense names filled with apostrophes to make them into silly sounding english phrasing was a disastrously tone deaf thing for the localization to do. they're really unforgivable. the worst of it all is probably "Inga Karkhuul Haw'kohd Dis'nahm Bi'ahni Lawga Ormo Pohmpus Da'nit Ar'edi Iz Khura'in III" i'm unsure if the names are quite as offensive in the original japanese because i haven't looked too much into what they actually are and have a really limited knowledge of the language. but. this name in japanese is "インガ・カルクール・ククルーラ・ラルバン・ギジール・ホフダラン・マダラ・ヴィラ・ヤシマ・ジャクティエール・クライン３世" which is written in katakana. katakana is, in contrast to kanji and hiragana which are used for writing japanese, used to phoenetically transcribe foreign languages or to write loan words. so the foreign-ness of this character is being emphasized here in the original text as well.

the supposed cultural inferiority of the khurainese people is baked into the game at pretty much every level, down to the gags. khura'in has the 'plumed punisher' show, which is actively criticized by the characters in game for just being a cheap ripoff of the steel samurai. they don't even get to have their own tv.

i believe the reason the racism is pretty much glossed over a lot in the fandom is for several reasons. for starters, ace attorney fans overall tend to fall into three camps: 1. people like me who fucking hate these games, refuse to acknowledge them, and would retcon them out of existence if possible. 2. people who have found things they like about the game and have a Good Version of the characters and plots that they have constructed in their head and 3. people who view all of the hate on these games as completely overblown

the first camp Does talk about how the game is racist but we're all already in agreement about that so it's kind of preaching to the choir and a bit redundant to keep going on about. the second camp tends to acknowledge the stickier aspects of the game but focuses on making content around the elements they like rather than critique. the third camp is the type to throw the baby out with the bathwater re: critiquing a thing they like. it's all haterism to them. but either way i think its kind of fucked up how many people will be like 'aa6 isnt that bad you guys are just mean' without even acknowledging these complaints.

anyway the khura'in country vs kurain village thing is really weird to me it shows both a lack of imagination and a disregard for the series' own established lore. why would a girl from a village where almost everyone is a spirit medium need to go to a place where only, like, two people are mediums to train.

i will say though that the divination seance is kind of one of the only things i found about aa6 to be an interesting addition. for a franchise with ghost summoning and murder solving, the two have a kind of hilariously low amount of overlap so i found the idea of bringing ghost bullshit into court really fun. mechanically speaking, the divination seances also felt a LOT better to play than the mood matrix segments of aa5.

in general, i think the biggest weakness of the mainline franchise under takeshi yamazaki's stewardship is its misunderstanding of stakes. both aa5 and 6 prioritize more bombastic and impressive on paper material stakes. oh no! the ENTIRE JUSTICE SYSTEM BEING GOOD OR BAD depends on this one case! on no! we have to DEAL WITH REBEL INSURGENTS! complete horseshit when there is not competent and functional enough character writing to get us emotionally invested here. yamazaki seems to think bigger is better, and that just simply isnt true for something like ace attorney

i've pointed this out in the past when critiquing aa5 and 6 but if you look at the actual material stakes on the line in ace attorney, they're at their highest after rise from the ashes. ousting the corrupt chief of police is the most impressive and impactful thing phoenix does with his career (arguably until the jurist system, but definitely in the trilogy.) but that's not the big Finale case for his character arc. his finale case is defending his college girlfriend; a nun who lives in the mountains, whose conviction would have had zero implications on the larger fabric of ace attorney's legal system. because takumi's writing clearly shows that he understands what makes a plot impactful is the emotional stakes the characters have invested in the events.

before taking over the main franchise, takeshi yamazaki was responsible for the miles edgeworth investigations spinoffs. i do enjoy both of those games - aai2 in particular is really strong. yamazaki does a great job with edgeworth's character arc even if i have some specific gripes with the duologys writing. i think theyre solid additions to the franchise. but you can see traces of this sort of misalignment in narrative priorities here as well. for example, the last case in aai1 is notorious for still going on for, like, an entire hour or two past the time when the last remaining plot point we care about has been revealed. because yamazaki seemingly had no understanding that That was the thing the case should have been about, and that should have been the final mic drop of the game. it just keeps going! he didn't know the game was done and he added a bunch more bullshit busywork after it that no one likes!

so yeah. without going into anything even as specific as how individual plotlines or character arcs were mishandled in aa5/6 that's really my overview What Went Wrong of those games.

- One day they were practicing archery and Mari got jealous of Ari for doing something better than her for once, so she splashed a really toxic snake poison into her right eye, Mari wanted to make her blind completely but failed ( also the snake poison splashed on Ari’s skin so she has a few scars on her body ), Of course Mari regretted her actions right after but it wasn’t entirely her fault because of all her parents abuse and pressure for being perfect, she got scared of what will they think of her if they find out She’s not good enough.

Kutner and Thirteen sat across from each other, both their countenances intense. House towered over them at the head of the table. Foreman, Taub, Wilson and Cuddy were on the opposite side.

Foreman broke the silence. “What exactly are they doing again?”

Taub tilted his head, his eyebrows still raised. “They’re playing chicken with … chicken wings, I guess.”

“Hot wings,” Kutner emphasized.

“Kutner is Kutner, but why are you doing this?” Foreman said to Thirteen.

“He thinks I can’t handle spice because I’m white.”

“Why do you care—”

“Ask questions later,” House cut him off. “The game is on. Ante omnia, we must ensure that they haven’t used any performance enhancing drugs. Their blood was screened for painkillers, and Wilson watched them until the results came back all negative. If they used local anesthetics that might be undetectable such as Cetacaine, its effects should have worn off by now, but we still need to make sure.”

“You let them do blood tests for this?” Foreman asked Cuddy.

“They paid for it.” Cuddy shrugged.

“Shush.” House scolded Foreman. He then commanded, “Kutner, say ‘Imagine an imaginary menagerie manager managing an imaginary menagerie.’”

“Imagine an imaginary menagerie manager managing an imaginary menagerie,” Kutner obliged effortlessly.

“Now Thirteen.”

They bit into their chicken wings. In the blink of an eye, they were both holding defleshed bones.

“This isn’t even spicy.” Kutner put down the bone.

“It’s regular stuff,” Thirteen agreed.

They raised their beers, clinked their bottles together and took a small sip.

“Next up, Valentina Black Label, 2100 SHU. On your mark, get set, eat.”

They quickly ate them up again, and licked the sauce off their fingers.

“This is nothing,” said Kutner.

“Nothing,” Thirteen repeated.

Again, they had a sip of beer just to cleanse the palate.

“Third, Tapatío, 3000 SHU. On your mark, get set, eat.”

“It’s alright,” said Kutner.

“Uh-huh,” said Thirteen.

Thirteen drank a little more beer than Kutner.

“Tapatío is hot,” said Taub. 

“To you.” Kutner looked at Taub with his smug grin.

“Quaker Steak Buckeye BBQ, 5000. On your mark, get set, eat.”

Kutner devoured it quickly. “Now we’re getting somewhere.”

Thirteen took a little longer, but finished it soon enough. She held her sip of beer a little bit before swallowing it.

“Tabasco Habanero, 7000. On your mark, get set, eat.”

“Ooh, it’s starting to hit,” said Kutner.

Thirteen’s pale skin was flushed, but she remained composed. They both had a gulp of beer.

“We are only halfway there. The sixth is Crazy Jerry’s Brain Damage, 11,000. On your mark, get set, eat.”

“Why are you eating something called Brain Damage?” Foreman stepped forward. “It will certainly hurt your GI system.”

“Only a little, and temporarily at that. These are all FDA approved for retail,” said House.

Neither Kutner nor Thirteen responded to Foreman. They managed to finish the wings, but not as easily. Kutner silently drank his beer. Thirteen fanned her face with her other hand while she drank hers.

“You can stop anytime you want, you know,” said Kutner.

“You wish,” Thirteen retorted, but she was a little out of breath.

“Dragon Repellant Knightmare, 15,000. On your mark, get set, eat.”

Thirteen hesitated before biting in. Kutner gobbled it up, as if he wanted to get it over with as fast as possible. They emptied their beers, and House replaced the empty bottles with new ones. Thirteen fanned her face with both of her hands. The redness spread to her neck. Kutner was getting flushed as well, just not as noticeable on his deeper complexion.

“They’re FDA approved for a little dip, not whole chicken wings covered in them.” Foreman approached Thirteen. “Remy.”

Thirteen dismissed Forman with the wave of her hand. “I can take it, okay?”

Foreman turned to the rest of the spectators. “This is stupid!”

“Which is why it’s funny,” said Taub.

Wilson nodded in agreement.

“Why are you allowing your employees to endanger their health?” Foreman asked Cuddy.

“They’ll do it even if I tell them not to, and I��d rather be present in case damage control is needed.”

“Foreman is trying to dissuade Thirteen, which is only going to motivate her more. He’s interfering with the competition by giving unfair advantage to one side,” said Kutner.

“Yes. Foreman, shut up. Taub, say something discouraging to Kutner to make it even,” said House.

“I don’t think the guy who willingly electrocuted himself can be discouraged from anything,” said Taub.

“True, and that statement would have the desired effect, so good enough. Blair’s Jalapeño Death, 20,000. On your mark, get set, eat.”

“Whoa.” Kutner recoiled after eating it, breathing rapidly. He chugged the cold beer. He took off his hoodie.

Thirteen coughed. She tried to drink beer to cool down, but ended up choking on it a little. Foreman leapt toward her. House barred him with his cane. “No entering the ring if you’re not playing.”

“You know what,” said Thirteen, coughing and breathing heavily. “You win, Kutner. I give up.”

“Technically, he has to complete the next round to win. Otherwise, it’s a tie.” House looked at Kutner.

Kutner’s face was distorted with agony, but he muttered, “Bring it on.”

“Very well. Blair’s Original Death, 30,000. Whenever you’re ready.”

Kutner took some time to regain his composure, and ate the ninth chicken wing. He immediately washed it down with the rest of his beer.

“We have a winner!” House exclaimed.

Wilson and Taub clapped and cheered. Cuddy rolled her eyes. Thirteen finally calmed down from her coughing fit and she kept drinking the beer. Kutne, however, remained seated. His eyes were fixed on the last remaining wing on the plate.

“Come on, you won. It’s over.” Taub tapped Kutner on the shoulder.

Kutner reached for the last hot wing. Everyone felt their own bodies growing tense as he painfully finished it off. House handed him another beer, and he chugged it down. He panted, and his skin glistened with sweat.

“You’re insane!” Thirteen yelled.

“That one was called Pain 100%, 40,000. This proves my hypothesis that you are a masochist.”

“I’m not a masochist!” Kutner protested between gasps.

House leaned over toward Kutner. “You already won. You didn’t have to touch that last one. You love to gloat, but right now you’re in too much pain to do that. You want pain more than you want victory.” House stepped away from the table and walked over to Wilson.

“This wasn’t as entertaining as I thought it would be,” Wilson said to House.

“We didn’t do it for your entertainment,” said Kutner. He was still recovering from Pain 100%.

“What did you do it for?” Taub asked.

“It’s not a dare if there’s a purpose,” Kutner replied.

“So you did it for nothing.”

“Pretty much.”

Taub sighed. “Have fun digesting all that. I’ll see you tomorrow, unless you need a sick day.” He walked out.

“At least this is over,” Cuddy grumbled before she left.

House and Wilson left as well. Kutner and Thirteen cleaned up the table. Foreman stayed behind to help.

“It’s still pretty impressive that you lasted as far as you did.” Kutner’s gloating smirk was back.

Thirteen laughed. “My insides are already burning.”

“I’ll finish cleaning up. You go get some rest. Drink water,” said Foreman. His eyes followed Thirteen through the window until she was out of sight. Then, he hissed, “Why did you put her up to this?”

“House and I ironed out the details, but having a match was her idea.” Kutner shrugged, his eyes wide open.

“You provoked her first.”

“I didn’t mean to provoke her, okay? It was an off-handed joke.”

“You should have said no when she wanted to do a match! You know she has—”

Foreman stopped mid-sentence because Kutner stepped closer, almost getting in his face. “She has a fatal neuromuscular degenerative disease. You think you know where it goes because you’re a neurologist, but you don’t. Neurologists just refer them to rehabilitation and follow up every now and then. You don’t even do that, because you work for House now. You confirm a diagnosis and your work is done. I did my residency in rehabilitation medicine. I’ve seen where it goes, many times over. Lifestyle changes are helpful, but it doesn’t change the destination or the course. It hardly even delays the inevitable. If she wants spicy chicken wings, she’ll have the goddamn spicy chicken wings. I’ll do whatever she asks to make her day exciting. I care about her. Maybe not in the way that you do, but I do. I won’t apologize for her decisions to you.” Kutner stormed out of the room.

Foreman continued to wipe the already-clean surface of the table.

Scarlet Rot research:

The Japanese term is "akai fuhai", which is just "red decay". However, the kanji used for "akai" is an archaic one, 「朱い」, rather than the usual 「赤い」. Noteworthy points:

* Unlike the modern kanji, the older one contains the radical for "tree", at the base. Obvious implications there.

* In modern Japanese, it's used as the kanji for cinnabar, and in that context pronounced "shu". Historically, a lot of people have been slowly poisoned and brain-damaged by cinnabar, in the form of red pigments and other mercury preparations.

(For associations with tyranny and immortality, see: Emperor Qin Shi Huang, death of. For associations with delirium and dangerous personality changes, see: erethism, aka "mad hatter disease".)

* That "shu" also more-generally means "red ink". My dictionary notes this as including "red text (as used to correct documents)". Which is what the Scarlet Rot is: a correction.

* Ecclesiasticus 13:1 (KJV):

"He that toucheth pitch shall be defiled therewith"

is in Japanese translated

「朱に交われば赤くなる」

"Touch shu and turn red"

and it seems to be a much more-commonly-used phrase than the English version. (Which makes sense if shu is in common use: the Japanese is a nice simple phrase, and nobody knows what pitch is.)

So, in Japanese, references to the Scarlet Rot will probably call to mind Religious Impurity Stuff. Translating it as "Scarlet" may have been an effort to create a similar association via The Scarlet Letter...? I think everyone just thought of scarlet fever. (This is assuming GRRM didn't name it.)

* The rest of the KJV-translation line is "and he that hath fellowship with a proud man shall be like unto him." I'm not going go digging through Japanese bible study sites to compare vocab, but that sounds related to Millicent's dialog about Malenia's pride.

SCREW IT I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT MY OCs!! This is Vanya Sokolov, he's a teenage Durast! He started off as being a Nikolai Lantsov ripoff, without the royalty and demon thing lol, but as I rewrote and rewrote his profile and backstory, he has more differences than in the beginning. Vanya is a reader, loves increasing his knowledge, he's an outgoing, chatty and easy excitable person, who can be very much clingy because he fears abandonment and loneliness like nothing else. They prefer to only show his joyous and happy sides to people, keeping his self-doubts and negative thoughts mainly to themselves. They're prone to losing stuff and it's barely possible for him to be seen still; he's always moving in one way or another. He's extroverted and knows many people, however, most of his relations are very superficial because of that and not really letting people in. He was born in Ryevost and has two sisters, Viktoria and Irina, his mother was a medik, his father owned a workshop. But the parents died of firepox when he was seven. For some time the siblings lived in the orphanage in Keramzin before they were separately adopted. Vanya was adopted by a childless couple living in Shu Han and that's also where he was tested when he was nine. It took some convincing and begging for his adoptive parents to let him go to the Little Palace. Vanya is bisexual and is fast to crush on people, but usually he doesn't do anything about it, because as fast as the crushes come, they also disappear again. In honour of his father he has a tattoo of two linked gear wheels on his left shoulder blade. His favourite food is warm bread with butter, his favourite colour is yellow (especially in combination with gold), he loves sunshine and nature and adventure romance books. Post I wanted to make a while, about East Asian history influences in 3H.

On the surface, Fódlan has a somewhat anachronistic medieval-ish Europe aesthetic going on, and many parts of its in-universe history/development is clearly drawn from actual European history.

But quite a bit of it is drawn from (East) Asian history/culture too, and I wanted to highlight some that people in anglosphere might have missed.

1. Commandments in Book of Seiros

The Book of Seiros has five commandments— as opposed to ten, as in the Bible. And it's like, fairly standard religious sounding stuff, but what particularly stands out to me is the part about respecting your parents.

Of course many cultures consider it a virtue to respect your parents/elders, but having it specified like that, and in Japanese, with the kanji 敬, strikes me as very Confucian. Coincidentally, Confucianism also has the Five Virtues— 仁義禮智信. Again it's not a perfect 1 to 1, but you can definitely see the influences.

The conditions under which the Seiros faith emerged has parallels with the emergence of Confucianism, too. Fucked up world with chaos and constant conflict where might makes right? Trying to make it a better place with an ideology telling people to be decent to one another and the rulers to rule justly? Yeah.

2. Chinese history and Romance of Three Kingdoms

I'm sure there are more qualified Romance of Three Kingdom nerds to talk about the details of this particular subject, but tl;dr Chinese history has pattern of uniting and splitting and uniting and repeat. One of the most famous eras with a lot of media adaptions is the Three Kingdoms era, where the Three Kingdoms of Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Sun Wu competed for dominance. Koei Tecmo also has their Three Kingdoms series so all this definitely influenced 3H too.

My very rough approximation is Adrestia ≈ Wei, Faerghus ≈ Han, Leicester ≈ Wu. In media, Wei usually gets the "final boss" position a la Adrestia; Han gets the "tragic heroes" thing plus they have very famous general associated with using a lance/spear (Guan Yu); Wu sorta gets treated as a side character, maintaining relative neutrality while the other two duke it out, but also their leader and country survived the longest.

Also, the final "victor" of the Three Kingdoms era, Sima Yi, was originally an official of Wei before raising the Jin dynasty. And Silver Snow, which the devs said all the other routes/worldbuilding was based off of, splits from the Black Eagles route. Maybe this is related to that?

Aside from that, clashes with nomadic people were frequent in Chinese history, and as you all know that's why the Great Wall of China was built. It's obviously not the only example of defensive walls/fortresses in history, but I think it still has parallels with Fódlan's Necklace. Plus among the nomadic people China fought were Turks, who are also one of the influences for Almyra.

(Speaking of, Almyra is also based on Persia, and Persian empires fought a lot with Turks and other related nomadic people too. That being said the those cultures influenced each other and mixed as they hung around in the same regions so Almyra having motifs from both is also reflective of reality.)

3. Isolationism and refusal to interact with the larger world or change, and how it will ultimately blow up in your face

Okay, this is a big one and, in my opinion, the most important. It also hit the hardest for me personally.

From about 17th century to 19 century, China, Korea, and Japan all had some level of isolationist policies. Trade was limited, as was access to/learning about western knowledge— sciences, etc. In the end all of these were ended by force; Opium War, Perry Expedition, Ganghwa Island incident.

The blowback from being isolated for so long before being exposed like that wasn't pretty. China had the century of humiliation; Japan overdosed on imperialism in an attempt to catch up with the west and went around colonizing and committing atrocities on other Asian countries before getting an atomic bomb; Korea got colonized by Japan and nearly had our language and national identities wiped out, and right after independence we had a brutal war over ideology then got divided up mostly at the whims of stronger nations.

I think most East Asians would agree if you said that the isolationist policies and the refusal by the establishment to change/adapt were bad ideas, and the reason why we ended up falling behind the west. A lot of the issues that still plague East Asian societies are downstream from the above, as are many of our diplomatic issues with one another.

So, point is, it's not hard to see that Fódlan's insistence on isolating and stagnating itself will ultimately fuck them over if continued. For now they can fend themselves off with the Relics and Crests, but what happens when the rest of the world technologically progresses to have weapons that can compete with the Relics? What happens when they're suddenly forced to deal not only with each other or a few other bordering places, but the entire world? What is their global standing going to be like?

Probably not good.

I'm probably somewhat biased on the subject, because VW is my first and (despite all the complaints I have about how GD get treated by canon) favorite. Still, knowing real history, it's probably not an exaggeration to say that in the long term ending Fódlan's isolationism is very much necessary for its own survival and good.

I always wondered why Akechi, despite being his "ruthless sort of person" self, seems to treat Sumi better and with more gentleness during 3rd semester than when he was using his "perfect and lovely detective prince" persona. When he meets with her and Joker by chance and they go to a cafe he is extremely sassy and passive agresive towards her. He even is pretty stand-off-ish to her seconds before they infiltrated into Maruki's palace. But i didnt know why.

But recently ive been thinking, he was a regular at the tv show her father worked at, and despite both of them being "oh no, we are not close. We've only shared pleasantries with eachother" he was familiar enough with the Yoshisawa family to inmediately understand everything that was happening at the start of Maruki's palace (With the tapes of her past and when Joker calls her Kasumi), even before either of then realizes what was wrong.

So then, he definitely knew she was "wearing a mask" during that coffee date earlier in the year, and maybe that passive agresiveness to her was because he must have seen her change from someone whose pain and grief he could relate a bit, into what he hated the most: someone with completely fake smile and personality, a living facade...someone like him.

But when he understood that Sumi also was manipulated, played with like a puppet by fate, he must have seen himself reflected in her again, his true self this time. And I think that's why he changed his attitude towards her. Even if it was an awful thought to have, he was a bit glad that there was someone else like him, suffering something similar to what he went through...it made him feel less alone, even if just for a bit.

Even when he's saying something not inherently mean to him. like his tone is so belittling it makes me wanna GAASFAHSHDAS

and like, i can forgive the teasing i guess, because that's kinda how jesper talks to everyone, including wylan. (it's a little different since kuwei is literally their hostage and they shut him in a tomb for weeks and then tried to sell him so kuwei probably wants nothing to do with them at that point, but he does end up having kinda a crush on jesper so maybe he didn't mind idk).

BUT OH MY GOD. when jesper said "those shu soldiers can smell us. YOUR father made that possible" I WANTED TO PUNCH HIM. kuwei watched his father die in front of him. parem was an experiment meant to help kuwei hide his powers. and then kuwei got dragged off and kept in the ice court for god fucking knows how long and was forced to make the formula for a drug that would massacre his own people. Jesper knows all of this and still decides to say that. As i said I love jesper but that moment makes me so mad at him.

then later in another jesper chapter, he internally says "The sooner Kuwei got on that boat, the better. The tomb was starting to feel crowded." KUWEI DOESNT WANNA FUCKING BE THERE?? literally leave him alone wtf did he do to you.

then in the entire black veil scene, jesper responds to almost everything kuwei says with some little dig at the fact that kuwei's dad made parem and everything is kuwei's fault to the point where kuwei is basically begging jesper for understanding and jesper dismisses him like annoyingly easily. I felt for kuwei so hard reading that scene. I wish we got at least one chapter from his POV just to know how he's feeling.

mostly i think jesper is just projecting his internalized grisha-phobia onto kuwei which i get is part of his character growth and stuff but it's just so unfair to kuwei. all kuwei is trying to do is relate to him and find some common ground on some level but jesper just acts like such a jerk. and when he kisses him and then just runs of and leaves him there... that was,,, like im not gonna act like jesper was 100% in the wrong for that situation because he wasn't but he definitely could have handled that situation better.

He also is probably doing it to impress kaz too because there's a lot of moments where the 2 of them gang up on kuwei like middle school playground bullies. Those parts probably infuriated me the most, because like... you kidnapped him. obviously he's still in a better situation than the ice court but i would at least expect jesper to have some sympathy.

but one thing that really gets me is how the fandom acts like wylan and kuwei are enemies and like, wylan despises kuwei. that's just so out of character for everyone involved. wylan and kuwei are the closest to being actual friends than kuwei + anyone else. jesper is the one who hates kuwei. I hate when people project their kuwei hate onto the crows but at least do it to the one who's actually shown being mean to him. when wylan said that "push you in the canal" thing he was running on broken ribs, a dead friend and like a half hour of sleep so he would have said that to literally anyone.

this was a really messy and unstructured tangent but i just really needed to get this out there. lmk your thoughts
