Been on a tears of the kingdom kick and utterly consumed by this game, so here's what I think how the boys would play the game:
Riddle: doesn't.
Trey: Found out there's a recipe list and that intrigued him. Is an avid explorer motivated by the food and environments. Has completed the recipe book.
Ace: spends more time paragliding than anyone. Dude probably Speedran to get Tulin once he heard about his ability. *Active* participant in Korok space program. He cheeses every shrine he can even though he's perfectly capable of solving the puzzles.
Deuce: makes pretty good zonai devices, especially motorbike ones with emitters on them. The problem is that he hasn't figured out how to upgrade his batteries.
Cater: takes screenshots of everything and anything. Looks up guides so he can get the different outfit sets. 100% skateboards the rails instead of using the minecarts. Shield surf champ.
Leona: that dude who posted himself on Reddit killing 5 lynels in the coliseum, no damage no mounting, then says it was easy.
Ruggie: sneakstrike king we stan. Dude never takes off any of the stealth outfits and knows exactly when to fold.
Jack: Dude maxed out on stamina before the 2nd dungeon. Also has the nicest dream house in Akkala. Is the most committed to sidequests.
Azul: has somehow memorized the coordinates of every key area. Comes in crazy prepared for every battle and situation. Knows exactly what fuses to use because he has tested every single possible combination. Has also taken inspiration from the recipe book into the Lounge's menu.
Floyd: naked run 3 hearts for funsies, has completed all of the shrines but doesn't feel like cashing in his rewards, purposely taunts the gloom hands and other horrors. Started cashing in on batteries the second he realized he could commit vehicular homicide.
Jade: loves collecting shrooms, knows every recipe on the book. Spends a lot of time on the various mountains this game has to offer. Pretty sure spends a lot of time in the caves too. Has the most bubbul kills.
Kalim: Minecraft extra-ore-dinaire. Dude has 115k rupees because he keeps finding diamonds in his ore. I don't know how he does it. Is unaware of the duplication (or any other) glitch.
Jamil: also a sneakstrike king and knows how to make good Zonai devices but Kalim keeps interrupting his game time during critical moments and his missions fail. Is very good at dodging enemies, almost at Leona's level.
Vil: plays during his downtime. Is a very good fighter and explorer and also has made some amazing zonai devices. Is just an all around good player.
Rook: A+ sniper, no eyeballs needed. Dude took out a gleeok on the first day. Has maxed out the compendium. Takes the loveliest photos too.
Epel: the berserker of the cast. Will throw himself into moblin camps for sport while screaming. Has the most golden apples of the cast.
Idia: Speedran the game the very day it came out, now spends his time making Oppenheimer-like B52s and testing them out with Koroks and enemies alike. Spams the duplication glitch. He also owns the collector's edition and I already hate him for it.
Ortho: creates those zonai devices that terrify me on Twitter. He also studies the enemy AI a lot. Is that dude who figured out how to simultaneously use batteries and electricity to stay in the air.
Malleus: plays just to see the dragons, then dips.
Lilia: spends most of his time in the depths. Is loving The Horrors™️ and having a grand old time. Has the largest dubious food collection.
Silver: the only person to actually treat the koroks well. Somehow collected all of the seeds.
Sebek: plays defensively and with two handed weapons. Keeps getting wiped out in 2 hits because he keeps forgetting to fuse. Insists he knows everything. Has maxed out all his pony points. Named the giant black horse "Malleus" (would have named him Lord Malleus had there not been a character limit).
i finished this run recently, and now i’m playing it a second time alongside another mod, so there’s your indicator to how much i’ve been enjoying it.
today i’m gonna talk a bit about the mod of redemption! if you’re looking for a reasonably sized content mod, you’re in the right place. my computer probably couldn’t handle calamity anyway.
weapons, armor, and classes
all vanilla classes of warrior, ranger, mage, and summoner are supported throughout this mod. It also adds a class: druid! this class has a tie to the nature elements included in this mod. it has three subclasses in weapons, being staves, seedbags, and spirits. i would place it between mage and summoner in terms of defense/damage, but it does get pretty powerful as the game progresses.
a lot of the modded armor sets felt more beneficial than vanilla sets, for example the techmancer armor held up better against the moon lord than the spectre armor, in my experience. some of the armor close to the end of the mod either benefits multiple classes or isn’t really class specific. while it may not seem like much when facing the bosses, the sets are very useful, even if your damage output doesn’t look the same as with previous sets.
i played mage/druid and ranger, and my favorite weapons were the sapphire stave, the gloom shroom bag, the gloop gauntlet, and the hyper-tech blaster!
bosses
this mod adds 12 mini bosses, four pre-hardmode bosses, four hardmode bosses, and four post-moon lord bosses. six of those mini bosses and one post-moon lord boss are included in what many consider to be the highlight of the mod: the abandoned lab.
two of the mini bosses are accessed by completing quests for the Wayfarer NPC, and two are part of an event.
the fights are very exciting; there’s always a lot to pay attention to. the music makes them even better--King Slayer III and Patient Zero had perfect choices for their themes.
three bosses/mini bosses become NPCs after the fight. it gave the characters and the world a lot more depth, and i really enjoyed having them around (though i’m biased because i already find robot characters very endearing.)
events
redemption adds one event, and you know what? i’m not telling you anything. it’s better you find out yourself.
lore
usually i don’t care too much about lore when it comes to mods, but redemption is an exception.
there are several storylines throughout the mod, some that overlap, some that don’t. the lore is engaging and easy to access. through data logs, floppy disks, NPCs, and more, you’re able to learn a lot about the bosses and structures you encounter. the various structures you find-the lab, the crashed ship, the hall of heroes, and others-all have their own stories. speaking of which,
the abandoned lab
i don’t want to say too much about the lab, as its really best to explore it on your own, but i couldn’t just mention it and then leave!
after the first hardmode boss, the game launches into the infection storyline. this is closely tied to the lab, and it grabbed my attention very fast. the world opens up a lot once you get into hardmode, and you start to learn about the history of the lab and some of the later bosses.
technically, it’s a dungeon, and it certainly feels that way. when you combine the xenomite debuffs, constant enemies, and the threat of radiation poisoning, you get a pretty dangerous adventure.
tons of fun, a lot of cool loot, 10/10.
some minor criticism
the mod of redemption is still in development, so it seems like not everything is here yet. maybe instead of critiques, this is more like what i hope to see in the mod in the future.
really my only complaint is that it felt like there were a lot of loose ends. i was left with a lot of questions, but not necessarily in a bad way. i was excited to learn as much about the world as i could, but it didn’t end as i expected it.
at the time, the final boss seemed to come out of nowhere--there was no mention of her prior. in retrospect, her appearance makes more sense, but with how important the fight was, as well as the aftermath, i would’ve liked to see more of her beforehand.
a lot of things i was able to put together myself. Protector Volt drops so much information, i could come up with some theories. there’s so much backstory surrounding the lab, as well as the nature gods, i would really love to see the mod expand on it.
yeah, lots of questions. who were the other insurgents? what happened to the other heroes? what’s all this talk of the demigod of light for? will Girus ever come down here and fight me herself?
overall,
i really enjoyed this mod! fun fights, interesting characters, and a lot to explore. the lore needs a little tweaking to clean it up a bit, but not too much. i think i spent somewhere between 30 and 40 hours on it. if you were already considering it, definitely give redemption a shot! i have a feeling i’ll be replaying this one more than a few times.
Life in the Treehouse moves pretty fast, and it can be hard to remember when you did what, and sometimes even why, so I had to check my e-mail archives to figure out that we started working on the lyrics for the songs in Super Mario Odyssey back in January of this year. (…Unless it was earlier? Who knows, man.)
Faults in my memory aside, the prospect of working on some songs at work was an exciting one. As a former music and Japanese double major, the idea that I would be using BOTH my degrees at my actual job was amazing. Who does that? Besides, I mean, people who chose their majors for more practical reasons…
When I became involved, the song that would eventually become “Jump Up, Super Star!” was basically done, at least as far as the music was concerned. The song was already going to be a hit in my mind, no matter what the lyrics ended up being, and at that time, the first section already had Japanese lyrics, written by Nobuyoshi Suzuki at NCL. I translated them thusly:
The symbol of a voyage, let’s start to raise the sails
A tailwind dances at our backs
Flip a coin, the goddess who’ll tell our fortune
Blows a kiss
Let’s sing our love as brightly as
All the lights in all the world
Then jump! (JUMP SE)
And grab! (COIN SE)
Say yeah!!! (yeah!!!)
Let’s dream together
Love together
If we walk with our eyes to the sky
Once all our tears have fallen
We’ll get a 1UP
Let’s all
Jump up high and high five
Tap and dance
I’m a superstar lighting up the world
Switching you on to happiness
So, let’s dance the Odyssey!!!
(Chorus)
Odyssey, ya see! etc.
Obviously, directly translating song lyrics leaves you with…well, something that won’t actually work as lyrics in the target language. But it’s clear that Suzuki-san and the team wanted something big and romantic. A love song of sorts. I listened to the song a few more times and set about creating a first draft of the English lyrics, taking the ideas from the above and fleshing them out so there would be enough syllables to match the rhythm and melody of the song.
Mayor Pauline is a fantastic vocalist, so we had to make sure she had an equally fantastic song to sing.
Here’s what I ended up with:
Oh we're ta- / -king a trip / Here we go it's time to raise the sails
The wind is dancing at our backs
Flip a coin / Make a wish / and the goddess might just blow a kiss
Boy I'd say your fortune's looking good
Le-et your love shine as bright as the lights in this whole wide wonderful world
Jump with me / (grab) coins with me / Oh yeah!
Together we can live our dreams /
This love is what it seems /
So keep your chin up as you trek alone/
And when the tears they start to fall /
There'll be no need to fear 'cause /
I'll be your 1UP girl
So let's all jump up super high / and high five in the sky /
There's no power-up like da-a-ncing /
You know that I'm the superstar /
No one else can take you this far /
I'm flipping the switch / are you ready for this /
Oh, let's do the Odyssey
Odyssey, ya see!
As you can see, a lot of that first draft did survive through to the final version of the lyrics. At this point, Rob Heiret (main English writer on Super Mario Odyssey) and I passed the lyrics back and forth a few times, until we had the following:
This time we're / off the rails / Here we go let's raise our sails
It’s freedom like you never knew
Grab a coin / Make a wish / and the goddess might just blow a kiss
You could say my hat is off to you.
We-e can zoom all the way to the moon from this great wide wacky world
Jump with me / (grab) coins with me / Oh yeah!
Together we can live our dreams /
This love is what it seems /
So keep your chin up as you trek alone/
And when we’re underground in gloom, /
Don’t fear, don’t shed a tear, 'cause /
I'll be your 1UP shroom
So let's all jump up super high / high up in the sky /
There's no power-up like da-a-ncing /
You know that you’re my superstar /
No one else can take me this far /
I'm flipping the switch / are you ready for this /
Oh, let's do the Odyssey
Odyssey, ya see!
We now felt like what we had was worth sharing with the folks on the Japan side, so I went into my home studio (living room) and whipped up a demo version. I’m not sure if it is fortunate or embarrassing that I didn’t delete these demos once the project was done, but here’s what that sounded like:
youtube
Too bad it couldn’t have been “Mayor Paul.” If you’re curious, I’m singing the song down a 6th in Eb because singing in the original key of C was not going to happen for me.
After we sent off the demo, the first round of feedback we got from NCL was really illuminating. They liked a lot of what we’d done, but also wanted a lot of it to change. For one thing, we’d leaned a little hard on the Mario references.
Through conversations with Suzuki-san, Naoto Kubo (the composer), and Shigetoshi Gohara (the overall sound producer), we learned more about their vision for the song: that it should be a fun, bombastic jazz number you could enjoy even if you had no connection or familiarity with Mario, but that would reward you even more, with little allusions to the Mario universe, if you were a Mario fan.
The same can be said of the music video that was produced to help promote the game as well—it’s fun to watch no matter who you are, but Mario fans will catch little details like Mario’s classic block-punch in the choreography.
The Mario references had to be at such a level that if you knew, then you knew, but if you didn’t, you wouldn’t really notice.
Another big goal from the dev team was to make the chorus as catchy as possible—simple and repetitive so even people who don’t speak English might be able to pick up on the lyrics and sing along. So, we had our work cut out for us.
Over the next couple of months, I settled into a pattern of adjusting and rewriting the lyrics, sending those around internally at NOA for more feedback, recording a demo, sending that to NCL, getting more feedback, rewriting, and then doing all of that again.
More than a few times, we even had video conferences with Gohara-san, Kubo-san, and Suzuki-san at NCL headquarters, where we would come up with new ideas on the fly that I would sing back to them then and there. I wonder what that sounded like outside the room…
At the end of that long (but fun) process, we had the lyrics for the first verse nailed down and realized that we were going to need two more verses. Oh, and we realized we had to record the song in about three weeks’ time. So, yeah… Things were going to need to speed up.
And they did! Here’s the first draft of the second verse:
Spin the wheel / take a chance/ every journey starts a new romance
A new world’s calling out to you
Take a turn / off the path / find a new addition to the cast
You know that any captain needs a crew
You can play it in 3D or 8-bit they’re just different points of view
Down the pipe / there’s an extra life / oh yeah!
(Come on and) Jump up in the air /
Jump without a care
Jump up ‘cause you know that I’ll be there
And if you find you’re short on joy
Don’t fret, just don’t forget that
You’re still our 1UP boy.
So go on straighten up your cap / let your toes begin to tap
This rhythm is a power shroom /
Don’t forget you’re the superstar /
No one else could make it this far /
Put a comb through that ‘stache / you’ve got panache
Oh, let’s do the Odyssey
Except for the “3D or 8-bit” line, and the “down the pipe” stuff, that’s pretty much what the final lyrics ended up being.
One thing Gohara-san and company really focused on was making sure that the lyrics felt good to sing, and that’s always been something I’ve really focused on in my own songwriting over the years as well. Aside from the actual meaning of the words, lyrics should have an intrinsic aesthetic appeal.
Gotta get those toes tapping, after all, right?
Which isn’t to say that meaning isn’t important, or wasn’t important when working on these lyrics. That said, I’ve found the various interpretations I’ve seen of our final lyrics to be way more thoughtful than my own.
A lot of people think there’s a deliberate “sails/sales” pun in the first line, as in: “Here we go, it’s time to raise our sales!” Sadly, I’m not that clever.
The best interpretation I’ve heard seems to have come out of Japan. I heard about it during the height of E3, when the song debuted. See, people read a lot into the idea that Pauline (in their eyes, Mario’s ex-girlfriend, though I’d never really thought of her that way) was singing a song to cheer him on as he undertakes an epic journey to rescue his current girlfriend (again, feels weird to type that out, but who am I to argue with other people’s headcanons?).
Kinda makes you think about Pauline differently, doesn’t it? Especially when you take a shot of her in Snapshot Mode and the moment you caught the fireworks almost makes them look like tears. I’m sorry, Pauline!
Viewed through that prism, the song becomes—while still joyful and upbeat—incredibly bittersweet at the same time. Again, I’d love to take credit for that, but I know I at least wasn’t cognizant of any of that stuff, really. I just wanted the song to feel good when you sing it.
And from the very humbling reception the song has gotten, it seems like it does! So thanks for listening, singing, and reading.
This are my faves. They’re so delightful. Tagged initially by @silver9mm who is the best jelly tooth ‘shroom one could ask for, so I shall answer these ones first.
1. Have you ever been banned from an internet forum?
Never! I am uncontroversial. I have been blocked by a few people on Tumblr, as far as I can tell because I don’t hide my opinions, but luckily that hasn’t had much of an adverse effect.
2. What’s the nearest maroon object to you? If you have to go looking, it still counts.
I’m at work, so--there’s a mysterious tin box under my desk. I don’t remember where it came from, but I’ve never thrown it away. It’s about 20″x10″ and is a lovely shiny maroon. I keep thinking, maybe I’ll use it for something. (Spoiler: I almost certainly won’t.) So it keeps company with my spare tissue boxes and my Spooky Tiny Halloween Tree, collecting dust.
3. 5 large dogs or 10 Siamese cats (indoor only)?
Oh god, the dogs. Siamese cats have the most annoying meows. Plus, indoor only? Jeez. I love cats, and I heart my kitty, but you get up to about three cats trapped in a house together and it doesn’t matter how much you clean, you’re going to be trapped in a purgatory of cat mustiness. Plus, dogs. <3
4. Do you remember when/how/why we met? Relate.
You know, I don’t? I have such an awful memory for this sort of thing. I remember I followed barnsburntdownnow first for all of the pretty art, and then you sent me some very nice messages and somehow I finally put together that barns & silver were the same person, and omg I should follow that silver too, and then we bonded over music, and really it’s all just happy and wonderful now. You did all the work, tho. :)
5. Give me some advice.
Give your dogs some love and have a nice stretch, and maybe get out and enjoy the fresh air if you haven’t yet today, if you’re up to it. This isn’t much of a question for me, though--I am not much of a believer in giving advice. It all boils down to ‘know thyself’, really, so.
6. Without trying out, you’ve been picked to be on Survivor. Do you go?
GOD NO. I’ve actually never seen an episode, but I get like gossipy news about it sometimes, and ugh, it sounds so awful. Even if it is mostly manufactured, as it seems “unscripted” shows tend to be, I can’t imagine subjecting myself to the weird popularity contest/drama factory, especially out on Island Bumfuck while eating bugs for my fifteen minutes of fame. Ugh. If they do a Survivor where you’re staying in boutique hotels in London and eating at interesting restaurants, sign me up for that.
7. Have you ever eaten raw meat on purpose? What/why?
Only steak tartare, once--at a very nice steakhouse, so I was reasonably sure I wouldn’t get worms or die. It was... eh. (Also I’m guessing raw fish doesn’t count for this question, because I’ve eaten much sushi, and the why is ‘cos it is totally delicious, omg.)
8. What’s your favorite scent?
Fruit blossoms (orange preferred); also, my mom’s perfume, Hanae Mori.
9. Do you follow any celebrity blogs? Who?
Not on here. My twitter is exclusively famous people & comedians, for quick humor & politics & movie news.
10. Tell me about your oldest known friend.
Alma is my BFF. We met in freshman year of high school, introduced by someone who at the time would’ve been called my best friend.* We’ve lived together for... eight years now, I think. We are aggressively rational together, both self-identifying as cheery nihilists, which is so refreshing. We’re very polite with each other--no manufactured drama arguments, no talking shit disguised as ‘friendly’ banter. I think that helps. She likes goofy gloom goth music and crochet and Star Trek and Pokemon, and she also likes just... learning stuff, and I just think she’s generally great. Needs to fix her hair, though.
*Entertainingly (or not), if you expand ‘oldest known friend’ to people who used to be friends, this person would’ve qualified. We were best friends from first grade to about ninth; it turned out that was primarily based on being the two smartest people in the room. Once that wasn’t true anymore, the cracks started revealing themselves more and more--that, plus her whole intensely Reaganite not-actually-Christian Christian vibe started to become revolting. Oh, well. I got Alma out of the deal.
11. Do you eat your leftovers cold or reheated?
I don’t have the moral fortitude for cold leftovers. I need to eat food at the temperature it’s ‘supposed’ to be. Cold pizza? Agh. Can’t do it.
Now, 11 questions.
1. What’s a hairstyle you would eliminate from existence, if you could?
2. What was your favorite toy/game when you were little?
3. Pick five desert island movies to bring with you to your own personal Elba.
4. Do you like sports? If so, which ones? If not, why not?
5. Is there something you’re too afraid to try?
6. How many languages do you speak? Are there any you want to learn?
7. What was the first thing you got intensely fannish over?
8. What’s your favorite thing about Tumblr?
9. What’s your mundane superpower? (Always on time, great handwriting, whatever.)
10. What’s your favorite joke?
11. If Warren Buffett handed you a million USD to donate to a charity of your choice, which one would you pick?
So, I’ll fire this right back at you @silver9mm, and these questions will also go to @wetsammywinchester, who tagged me as well; then, from there, @sal-si-puedes, @nomercles, @idontdo-marigolds, @winchestersinthedrift, @themegalosaurus, @chiisana-sukima, @durenjtmusings, and, er, whoever else wants to do it. Is that eleven? Whatever.
