The Vampyr Combine are the backbone of Lemuria, building and maintaining the Lemurian Merchant Aerial, and ensuring a steady supply of goods onto and off of the island. Founded and headed by Vampyr, the Combine was intended to progress Vampyric culture in a modern world, instead of stagnating with a veneration of a forgotten past.
The Combine is a loose confederation of several disparate Lemurian factions, and their respective cultures and traditions have blended into a chaotic, functional mix. Gremlins, Goblins, Vampyr, Fae, and human alike live and work together for mutual gain and defense.
The Privateers may run the Docks, the Assembly the Shipyards, and the Goblins repurpose defunct airships into useable parts in the Scrapyard, but the Merchant Aerial of the Vampyr Combine runs the Ports, bringing materials for the Assembly, materiel for the Privateers, and providing a steady business to the Scrapyards.
Their ships are not flashy, fast, or powerful, but when it comes to rugged dependability and long-term functionality, Combine Merchant Aerials simply cannot be beaten. If a thing can be found by coin or cutpurse, the Combine will find a way to get it. The markets, both Black and Legitimate, have unmatched selections and prices.
The Port District rises sharply up from the pastoral landscape of Lemuria. Massive landing platforms squat atop massive vertical warehouses. Massive Merchant Aerials plow through the local airspace to their joint docking/repair slips atop these incredible feats of engineering. Smaller warehouses can generally handle either one massive Aerial, or up to four smaller ones. The largest can handle up to five mammoth Aerials, or up to forty smaller Aerials.
The massive Towers are arranged in several long, straight rows along broad avenues dedicated solely for the smaller, local air and ground travel, with Commercial Districts popping up in the alleys between towers, perpendicular to the Port Avenues.
Atop the Towers, Combine techs work, live, and breathe. Luxury accomodations for the repair Techs and Merchant Aerial crew alike lie just below the loading/unloading floors, between massive fuel tanks and maintenance bays, and the low, eternal rumble of heavy equipment and the loud squeal of single-man speeders used to traverse the vast distances of the Warehouse itself.
The Symphony of the Aerials.
Below the living and maintenance levels are dozens, if not hundreds, of floors dedicated to nothing less than the storage of the titanic amounts of materials that are either waiting to be sent out on a Merchant Aerial or fresh off a Combine airship waiting to be retrieved by Lemurians in need.
And finally, in the lowest reaches of the Aerial Warehouses, lies the public sectors. Massive doorways that rarely close, measured in stories rather than yards, yawning open into a cavernous honeycomb of docking slips and designated landing spaces serviced by an eternal and chaotic caravan of workers, conveyors, and loaders.
Food service, small stores of quiet necessity, and beds to let on demand are all available here, owned and operated by the owners and operators of the entire massive Warehouse. The availability tends to be limited to bare essentials, but any and everything you might ever need (and much that you won’t) can be found elsewhere in Lemuria if you know where to look and can afford it.
Between the peaks of the warehouses, in the valleys where natural light arrives for only a short time per day, the Port’s commercial district has sprung up.
Built vertically of up to a dozen levels layered haphazardly on top of each other, the Commercial Alleys have risen up between the massive Warehouses. Built directly into the sides of adjacent Warehouse Towers, parking is serviced directly by the Towers. Even the tallest of the Commercial Alleys is dwarfed many times over by the smallest of the Towers.
Mostly lit by neon and harsh artificial lighting, even when the sun is at its zenith, the Commercial Alleys never sleep. There is a constant stream of commerce and life, no matter what time of day it is.
Alleys tend to each have their own personality. Some are lit by neon and garish signs. Others have a more natural look, full of growing things with natural bioluminescence.
Temmas’ Alley appears to be no more or less than a giant, free-roaming zoo, with creatures of every possible type and shape lounging and living more or less as they wish. The crafty old Goblin and his band of misfits take great pains to make their animal guests as comfortable as possible, from the artificial waterfall the splits the middle of the Alley to the large watering hole that runs down the Alley’s center. Foregoing their cultures’ tendency to tinker with mechanicals, Temmas and his motley crew instead have focused their attention on pampering biologicals.
Qtleska’s Alley is a natural haven in a city of steel and concrete. Trees, impossibly old and thriving for its location, grow up and around the Towers beside it, cradling shops and inns and restaurants alike in its branches. But the crown jewel of Qtleska’s is the namesake Qtleska’s Library. Not of books, but of plants. Flowers beyond number, shrubs and bushes as far as the Alley can stretch. Trees, vines, mosses, and far more, carefully curated and tended by a small resident Gnoll population. Qtleska and his fellow Gnolls are a common sight in the Port, slowly coming and going along their mute pathways, floral raiment in various stages of blooming upon and into their backs. And somehow, despite the heavy traffic near Qtleska’s Alley, beneath the branches the sounds of airships are somehow muted in this natural oasis amongst the Port’s artifical mountain range.
Entalen’s Alley, meanwhile, is a sharp departure from some of the more natural alleys. Lit by buzzing neon billboards advertising their services, everything is a dull, dark gray. Thin, rickety catwalks criss-cross Alley, and thin walkways along the edges of the Alley service the shops reinforce the feeling of cramped paranoia. Harsh, white spotlights eternally shining down from the ceiling in irregular arcs leave deep shadows between their blasts, while dull, if colorful, light spills from shopfronts, slicing the gloom of Entalen’s into smaller if somehow more intense pools of shadow. The sizzle of frying food is everywhere in this Alley, punctuated by calls of shopkeeps to each other and to prospective clients that hurry from one patch of light to the next, staying together in tight groups if they need to venture down this particular section of the Port.
Roberto’s Alley is softly lit, colored all in white, with smooth, organic curves. Minimalism would be the name of the game, if such a thing would not sound vulgar to the disgustingly wealthy that is Roberto’s Alley’s clientele. Few things are actually sold here, but when they are, enough money to buy small countries are exchanged. No wares are on display, and far from the hawkers in other alleys, every store here has armed security to keep out anyone until they have proved they have a sufficient bank balance. If you need to ask what sort of things are available here, you will be quietly if efficiently frog-marched out of the Alley and warned not to return on pain of pain, because you clearly cannot afford even a sip of water from the most pitiably pedestrian of the shops here. Those that can afford what resides in Roberto’s, well. They know where to go and whom to talk to. But if you’re reading this it clearly isn’t you, so it’s best you move on before security is called.

What is NDIS Short Term Accommodation?
NDIS short term accommodation is one of the most misunderstood parts of the scheme. But with some careful planning and clear communication, it can be a smooth experience for everyone involved.

STA is also a valuable support for participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. STA funds can be used to pay for accommodation, personal care, and meals for a short stay away from home. Contacting your NDIS support coordinator or LAC, conducting online research, checking with local disability NGOs and charities, and visiting potential options are all effective ways to find the right fit. With careful planning, you can enjoy a safe, affordable, and comfortable stay.
What are the benefits of NDIS short term accommodation for caregivers?

NDIS Short Accomodation gives participants a chance to try new things, experience a change of scenery, and learn skills in a safe environment with professional support. This enables participants to build independence, which in turn helps carers recharge. When caregivers are refreshed, they can provide better support, resulting in a positive cycle of wellbeing for everyone.
For people who are waiting on their NDIS funding to be approved, looking to test out independent living temporarily or in need of a break from their usual daily routine, NDIS short term accommodation is an ideal option. Contact United for Care today to see if STA is right for you. There are no set eligibility criteria, but the primary factor is your need for a temporary change of scene and respite.

How to Add NDIS Accomodation to Your Plan
NDIS Accommodation participants can use their funding to pay for short and medium term accessible accommodation. This blog will explain how to add this option to your plan, and how it works.
This type of specialised housing is purpose-built for a person with disability and has design features such as wide doors, low benches and access to physiotherapy equipment. These properties are in high demand and are often very expensive.
Short-Term Accommodation (STA)
Short-Term Accommodation (STA) is a type of NDIS housing support that offers participants a safe temporary environment where they can enjoy a change of scenery, new experiences, and tailored support. STA services typically include accommodation, personal care, and a range of activities, all of which are carefully selected to suit the Participant’s needs, interests, and goals.
Caring for a person with disability requires a lot of love, dedication, and effort from both the NDIS participant and their family. However, it is also important for both parties to take some time out for rest and relaxation, which is where STA comes in.
NDIS-registered Disability Support Providers such as Champion Mentors offer personalised STA experiences, which are designed to meet the unique needs and goals of each Participant. From outdoor adventures to cultural excursions, these customised experiences allow Participants to break out of their routine and pursue their passions. In addition to a refreshing change of scene, STA can help provide relief for informal supports like family and friends who may be caring for the Participant.
Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA)
Often, the day-to-day lives of people with disabilities revolve around their accommodation. Short and medium term accommodation works to break that routine by offering a variety of activities, allowing participants to explore their interests and discover new passions.
Similarly, it offers carers a much-needed respite. By giving carers a break, it helps them to recharge and return to their roles with more energy.
While MTA is funded under core supports in a participant’s plan, participants will need to cover their own day-to-day expenses such as food, phone and internet. Some MTA properties also price their accommodation according to the number of people staying, meaning friends can join you while you’re there but it will be invoiced separately.
When choosing MTA, location and comfort are key factors. Look for properties that are in a location that suits your lifestyle and offers you easy access to essential services. Ensure the accommodation is comfortable and offers you adequate space to move about freely.
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
SDA is a type of NDIS housing support that can be included in your plan if you have very high support needs and extreme functional impairment. SDA houses have a range of accessible features and designs that promote independence and safety.
These can include wide doors and windows, a hoist in your bedroom or bathroom, specially designed kitchens and bathrooms, and special technology. Some SDA homes also have around-the-clock ‘concierge’ support to help you if you need it — like someone to fix your phone or a power point or get food from the shops for you.
SDA can be part of a larger group home or your own private house, duplex, villa or granny flat. If you have a private SDA dwelling, it will be funded directly by the NDIS. This gives you more control and choice over where and with whom you live. If you want to apply for SDA, contact your NDIS planner.
Individualised Living Option (ILO)
If you have a plan that includes home and living support, you may be able to access an Individualised Living Option. This is funding to help you live the way you want, where you want and who you want. It works in two stages – exploring and designing your supports and then implementing those supports.
These could include paid or supplementary supports that are flexible, such as ‘drop-in’ support from family, friends, neighbours or volunteers. However, ILO doesn’t fund 1:1 programs of rostered support or group homes.
If you think an ILO might be right for you, talk to your NDIS planner or a Yooralla customer support coordinator. They will work with you to explore your options, determine what kind of house and what sort of support system would be best and then implement those supports within your NDIS budget.

Renting a hotel is a great option for tenants looking to find an affordable living situation. Luxury Hotel Sariska are often more spacious than traditional rental units and provide a variety of amenities that can make life easier for those who need to stay in the same place for extended periods of time. hotels also offer competitive rent rates, making them an attractive option for tenants on a budget. When selecting a hotel, it's important to consider all the factors involved with renting one. The location is an important factor, as it will determine how close you are to work or school and other amenities like restaurants and grocery stores.
Another factor is the size of the apartment; if you plan on having roommates or visitors staying with you, then you'll need a larger unit than if you're living alone. Additionally, amenities such as laundry facilities and parking should be taken into consideration when choosing which rental hotel is right for you. In terms of cost savings, hotels typically require only one upfront payment rather than monthly payments like regular rentals do. This means that you'll save money in the long run by avoiding additional costs such as late fees and deposits associated with traditional rentals. Furthermore, most hotels come fully furnished so there's no need to purchase furniture or appliances when moving in - saving even more money on your move-in expenses! Finally, they have flexible lease terms so tenants can stay for shorter periods of time if needed without being locked into long-term contracts or paying hefty termination fees when they want to leave early.
This makes them perfect for students studying abroad or those who travel frequently - allowing them to stay at their preferred rental unit without worrying about renewing their lease every few months. Overall, hotels are an excellent option for tenants looking for affordability and flexibility while still enjoying comfortable living conditions.

Short Term Rental in Dubai
Property prices in Dubai have witnessed a decline during the past four years, making luxury Dubai property significantly cheaper than in peer cities. In figures: An investor buying a luxury property in Berlin will have to shell out 79,23% more per square metre than for a comparable real estate asset in Dubai (Knight Frank PIRI 100 Index 2017).
At the same time, AirBnB hosts in Dubai can charge the 3rd. highest prices in the world, showing a continued upward trend, increasing 7,1% y-o-y in 2017 („Bloomberg World Lodging Cost Index“).A logical course of action to take advantage of this situation is to invest into suitable apartments in high-demand areas, thereafter renting them out on a short term basis, leveraging sophisticated marketing strategies using global portals like AirBnB, booking.com and others. The described situation realistically puts two digit ROIs into reach, not considering the likely stimulation of tourism through the Expo 2020 event or a capital appreciation during the forthcoming property cycle.Specific Benefits – Wide Audience
Tumblr media
With the official adoption of AirBnB in Dubai dating only two years back, there are 6.200 AirBnB homes in Dubai at present, representing a very small percentage in comparison to the stock of hotel units. Obviously catering to tourists and business travelers,Considering the fact that Dubai`s hotel industry had been overly focused on the luxury segment in the past, affordable hotel options are scarce, notably in the most sought after tourist and business districts like Downtown, The Palm and DIFC, as well as Dubai Marina and JBR.It is therefore not surprising that AirBnB rates have been at a premium over hotel average daily rate (ADR) levels in these areas, indicating the consumer`s preference for more spacious accomodation in Dubai`s hotspots.Shift to the MiddleFeaturing the world`s highest per capita tourist spending (106% more than London in 2016: MasterCard Global Destinations Index) and being no. 3 of the world`s most visited cities already, Dubai is now implementing a plethorea of measures to further strengthen its appeal to travelers. Eying especially the vast and most dynamic source markets in Europa and Asia, the Emirate is now diversifying its tourist offerings down into the middle class and family segments with the ultimate goal to sustain its hospitality industry`s growth momentum. These include:
Creating new family-centric attractions like theme- and water parks
Visa-on-arrival for Chinese and Russians
Strengthening its profile as a destination for medical tourism
Substantial marketing efforts in the growth markets China, India and Russia
Offering 48 hour visa for stop-over travelers.
With 70 million passengers transiting only through Dubai`s DXB airport in 2017 (not counting DWC), the potential of the 48 hour visa option to the local hospitality industry becomes impressively obvious.Revenue CalculationBelow-mentioned calculation shows achievable revenues for a specific 1-bed apartment in the Business Bay district. It includes all costs for acquisition and daily operation of the unit, including service charges, maintenance, marketing etc. Further, neither capital appreciation nor increasing room or occupancy rates („expo effect“) have been assumed.Equity Investment

It is noteworthy that mortgage financing generally is widely available for overseas investors. However, with the UAE Dirham pegged to the US-Dollar, higher interest rates (i.e. compared to eurozone levels) and shorter fixed interest rate periods are the norm and should thus be taken into account.
Roundup
The combination of Dubai`s booming tourism industry with the presently moderate property asset pricing could be a winning one, especially if Dubai`s efforts to strengthen its position as a tourist destination bear fruit.
Crucial for successful implementation of this strategy are the choice of a highly attractive property in a suitable location as well as the competent operators. Finally, the availability of competent marketers, effectively leveraging the power and reach of AirBnB & Co, is imperative.

Here's my educated two-cents, I think it's really down to three things:
1) In general culture-wise, many studios treat UI and UX (wrongly) as heavy "fix it in post" disciplines. Awkward game design, non-polished ideas, fundamentally unintuitive systems, etc. are often just thrown to UI teams to sort out and make sense for the end user. Generally, this tends to reflect poorly back on final UI in the end.
2) Specifically speaking to Battle Royale as a genre (as they're both mentioned in this thread) - remember Battle Royale had a very rushed birth and growth to relevancy. PUBG got huge around 2017 and every studio suddenly rushed their own Battle Royales out the door to capitalize on the popularity. Heck, remember that Fortnite was originally a PvE base building game and Epic hastily transitioned it into a Battle Royale because they saw how popular PUBG was, and that then became their focus. Lots of studios pivoted their multiplayer games production hard to fit the genre.
This also meant there was a lot of games of Battle Royale style initally developed in a relatively very short period of time for games of their size, that were then transformed into ongoing live service games that likely were never planned to be in the first place.
3) On top of all these other factors, games built as "Games As A Service" has really exploded in the last decade. Now games are being maintained, expanded and updated for years and years on end after release, and that inherently creates a lot of bloat and a lot of dependencies in terms of design. Fortnite has been running for 8 years, and Apex for 5. Comparatively, games like Titanfall used to ship once every 2 years and had no real major updates to speak of post-launch. The plan was just to make the game and that's it; UI was "done" alongside the game and didn't require extensive pre-planning or reacting ti changes.
So nowadays, UI designers on a Battle Royale GAAS game that has been running for years are working from systems made by people who have likely left the project, built on production plans that have likely changed (and will continue to change) over time (to the extent that you as a UI designer may not even know what new features are being added or changed in a few months or years time, but they have to find a way to accomodate all the new stuff anyway while still keeping the old stuff in tact), and all this built on foundations of games by studios that were trying to really speedily tap into an emerging genre that was sink-or-swim but proved to be highly profitable.
I don't envy UI designers at the best of times, and I really don't envy GAAS UI designers because that sounds like an absolute nightmare!
There needs to be a study done on the dwindling UI quality in games like fortnite cause GOD never before have I seen such consistently bad menu designs.

I feel like some people I know (including my supervisor and occasionally professors) don't understand that I sometimes take longer than other people to complete tasks or learn things (probably due to several of my disabilities). Do you have any advice for explaining this to other people but not making it seem like an excuse? My accommodation of extra time on assignments in school doesn't allow me very much extra time. Can I also request some affirmations about it's OK to learn at my own pace?
Hi Anon!
I have similar problems to you - because of my cognitive dysfunction, I am a slow learner, and I usually need three times as long to read anything. I am currently working on a research project for my degree that should take me one semester - but I have been able to negotiate much much longer - the initial plan is that instead of the usual 15 weeks, I will aim for 27, with the option for additional time if I need it. The reason: I cannot take in more than about 10 pages of reading a day, and that’s simply not enough.
So... let’s talk about how I explained and negotiated my way to this agreement:
1. I am registered with Disability Services
So, not every school has one, and it doesn’t help with a workplace, but essentially what this means is that I took steps to explain my situation before it became a problem. As well as registering that I need assistance (which I’m guessing you have done too - hence the extra time) I always speak to a new lecturer or professor myself after the first class. I say something like:
“Hi. My name’s Kate and you will have recieved an Education Access Plan for me. I just want to let you know some things...”
My school has rules that the Plan has to be followed, and the staff aren’t allowed to ask me why I need my special accomodations, but I like to be upfront and explain to them. Then they feel like I’m honest and trustworthy, etc. And I find them always very accomodating.
2. I make sure people see the effort I put in
I am a high achiever. At school, in the workplace, in my activism work, in video games! At school, I care a lot about my grades, but I also make a deliberate effort to be sure my lecturers and teachers can see my effort. I ask a lot of questions and raise my hand when I know the answers to things. I contribute to class discussions. I email if I am sick and I go to consultation hours and ask for help.
This means that when I need that extra time to finish an essay, they know wasn’t lazy or wasting time (and sometimes, maybe, I was!) because I have that track record of being a good student who puts effort in. I’ve even got a reputation now with staff I haven’t met.
I do the same thing at a job. I work hard and I make sure I’m seen working hard.
Note: You should not have to do this! I should not have to. Our word and a medical certificate should be enough. But it often isn’t, and you asked for advice, so this is it, sadly.
3. I explained exactly what my need is and why
When it came to negotiating this specific longterm extension on my research, I had to ask my supervisor to commit to much longer. That’s a big ask. So, I needed to be clear on what my problem is and I also came to her with a proposed solution to that problem. The clearer you can be, the better (which can be hard with a cognitive disability - but writing it down can help)
So. Problem: I can only read about ten pages or so a day of the kind of complex academic language this research requires. That’s drastically below the amount I need to read in the timeframe available.
Solutions: I need more time. There’s a way we can enrol me so the computer system allows me to take more than one semester, and I came to her with that information. I wrote a proposed study plan of how long it might take me and when I might have a first draft, a final draft, etc. I included what kind of information I thought I needed and how much time I thought the first few of these might require (Two weeks on Subject A, Three on Subject B).
I also explained to her how varying the tasks I’m performing helps me to keep focused - so I wrote a list of the tasks I needed to do besides reading, and gave her these too, so she could see how I’d help myself work better by varying tasks.
People love it when they don’t have to do that much work! If you say “Here’s the problem, I already found the solution, please tick the box that says you agree” they fucking LOVE that. The thing is done with the least inconvenience to them.
So, your problem: You need longer to complete tasks or learn something new.
If you feel comfortable, it will help to explain why this is. In simple terms, but not patronising. I always say:
“I have trouble concentrating, especially if there are distractions like other noises - even something minor like an air conditioner. I get tired easily, I can only focus for short periods. I fall asleep when reading long passages of text. I read slowly. Some days I cannot read at all.”
All of those things make up “I need more time”, but they explain WHY I need more time, and often a person who is just ignorant about disabilities simply hasn’t bothered to think about it and when you explain it like this, they begin to understand why you find things more difficult than they do.
Another thing I like to say is “Think about how you function when you’re very tired. When you try to read a book but you’re ready to fall asleep and the words blur - that’s me all the time” - that’s an experience that they can relate to, and that really helps!
Then you can tell them the solution: “It would really help if I had extra time. That would give me more time to read everything over twice to make sure I understand it.” Or you could say the extra time helps you because you can only work for a small period each day and therefore you need more days to give you an equal amount of work time as your classmates.
OK. In summary:
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with an “excuse” - it’s just a reason you didn’t or can’t do something and we shouldn’t attach negative connotations to that. But I know what you mean when you say you don’t want it to sound like an excuse, so ways to avoid that include:
1. Make your needs clear BEFORE you need them. (I realise you’re already in the situation, but note for future) If you’ve already told someone about a potential problem, it will not sound made-up to them when you bring it up during a deadline.
2. Make them trust you. Show them that you wouldn’t lie. If they think you are an excellent student/employee/citizen/etc, they will not see you as having a reason to make up some excuse. Why would you when you’re normally so diligent and enthusiastic?
3. Explain the WHY (I do and learn things slower because...) and offer solutions by explaining HOW they help (More time would mean...)
This was an extremely long answer... Not sure I could read it all in one hit myself, tbh! :p Might be pushing that ten page limit.
Good luck, Anonymous Friend. I hope some of this is helpful to you.

On Carriages and Gigs of Gentleman Jack and Anne Lister's Diaries
I started reading about gigs because I wanted to find out which gig Anne used when she travelled to the Lake District in 1824. This nonchalant question I've asked myself led me into a week long reading and transcribing pages from the diary that talk about Anne in York in autumn of 1821 buying that gig. (My wife did this generously for me, thank you). After I did find this out, I've asked myself what do we know so far about the other means of transport in Anne's time. Travelling was such an important part of Anne's life, and not just travelling abroad or long-distance travelling, but her often excursions to York by Highflyer or going to Langton by coach or in someone's carriage or taking a ride in the gig to Halifax or when she is in Langton with Tib. In one of the ALBW interviews we heard about how they filmed the scene with the Highflyer arriving to Halifax, or how Lister chaise was filmed in the air when being taken off the ship when reaching Copenhagen. But the topic of carriages and gigs certainly deserves more attention. The number of different models and types of carriages and gigs that are shown in the show is just amazing. Thank you Dorjana Širola for all the transcriptions. Thank you wikipedia and many websites for data and information. Thank you BBC for snapshots from the show.
Stagecoach
Tumblr media
A stagecoach was a heavy and spacious horse-drawn carriage on 4 wheels pulled by 4 horses or mules. It could carry up to 20 passengers, some inside, some on the top of the carriage. Coachman was in charge of driving the coach or a carriage, having the control of the horses from an independent seat. He would usually be accompanied by a footman whose concern would be the passengers and transported goods. This was a public service coach meaning passengers would pay for the transport as well as for transport of their packages or letters. There was a net of posting stations scattered around the country where tired horses would be exchanged for fresh ones.
This one at the beginning of episode 1 must be the Highflyer, a type of stagecoach, that connected Halifax with other towns.
Coaching inn
Tumblr media
When people travelled in their own carriages or gigs, they would be accomodated in coaching inns. Coaching inns provided stables and food for horses but also accomodation for travellers for the night. Those that survived to today simply became regular inns or pubs, of course without stables provided (but it's fun tracking down the old buildings and finding remains of prior structures). Read here just about how much traffic jams involving this type of transport were regular back in the day: http://www.wickedwilliam.com/principal-departure-coaching-inns-1819/
Cary’s New Itinerary
Tumblr media
Travellers who travelled on their own were equipped with useful reference books on the road telling them where exactly they could find coaching inns and posting stations. The reference work of the time was Cary's New Itinerary, first published in 1798, on all the roads in England and distances between towns, and contained the “list of all Inns that supply post Horses and Carriages”. Anne used this while touring the Lake District in 1824.

The Lister chaise
Tumblr media
Listers owned the Lister chaise, built in 1725, one of the oldest preserved carriages in the world. You can see it in the stables of Shibden Hall, if you already haven't. We see it in episode 1.
Interestingly enough this carriage doesn't fit the description of a chaise at all which is a 2 wheel light carriage for 1 person, with a folding hood or a calash top. Instead it better fits to a description of a post chaise: it had a closed body on four wheels, sat two to four persons, and was drawn by two or four horses. A postilion would ride on one of the horses that pull the carriage. It seems to me that post-chaise became the term to mean public travelling carriages that would change horses at post-stations, and that's why Lister chaise is a chaise, and not a post-chaise.
The real Lister chaise
Tumblr media
The Lister chaise looks a bit different than this one shown in the show. "The green and gold appears to be the original colours, although at some point it was painted grey, before being restored and returned to its original colours in the 1950s" says Calderdale Council's brochure on Shibden Hall. The one in the show is simply rejuvenated, together with the colours but the model is the same. Here is the photo of the real Lister chaise. Credits Shibden Hall ...
Anne bought a gig!
Tumblr media
In the autumn of 1821 Anne went to York to buy a gig from the famous York coachmakers Breary's. She bought a second-hand one, probably a model of Stanhope gig for £65.2.0 which in today's money is £3.738.72. https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency-converter/#currency-result
Tuesday 23 October 1821
…Mr. Duffin and I… went to Breary’s to look at the 2nd hand gig with a top to it – afterwards took Dr. Belcombe and Anne to see it, and I think I have determined to take it…
Friday 26 October 1821
…Ord[ere]d the gig at Breary’s – Handsome brass harness (evidently only used 3 or 4 times) and lamps to the gig, all together to £48…
Tuesday 30 October 1821
…Letter also from Isabella Norcliffe (Langton) – John Coates (the head-groom) strongly advises me not to have the yellow gig, but the green one, which will cost £15 more – at 2, went to Breary’s to /sic/ look at it again, and intend to follow John’s advice…
Wednesday 31 October 1821
…Eli Belcombe… went with me to Breary’s where I ordered the green gig, with lamps and harness and all complete six[t]y guineas…
Wednesday 19 December 1821
Had the new gig from Breary’s, and George and I drove from the Dr. Belcombe’s door at 11 ½ - the mare a little awkvard at 1st, and I had not driven an hundred yards before I ran against the wheel of a cart – however we came along very well afterwards – I drove the whole way, and we got here (Lowgrange) in 3 ¼ hours, 19 miles…
Monday 24 December 1821
…Mariana and I went out together at 2 – went to Breary’s – I ordered lamps to my gig, and paid him for the gig and all its appurtenances £65.2.0…
Transcription credits: Dorjana Širola
A gig is a light two-wheel cart for 2 people drawn by one horse. We know her gig was green, she bought lamps to be added on and it had a top that could be pulled out in case of rain. In this gig she travelled to the Lake District in 1824 with her aunt. Caradoc, her horse, pulled the gig and George Playforth rode on a hack-horse. As a breed Hack-horse was a type of horse that could have been used for riding but also pulling carriages or gigs. Since there is no gig in the stables of Shibden Hall, I consider Anne's gig to be lost.

This is a photo of Stanhope gig, the exact model I think Anne bought. Notice the top that can be pulled in or out in the case of rain, also the visible space for luggage under the seat.
Just like carriages, gigs were considered to be status statements and subject to changing fashions. As well as there was a high number of different types of carriages available, the same applied to gigs.
The Stanhope was a lightweight gig, similar to a phaeton. It had a high seat with a closed back and plenty of storage room for luggage underneath it. The Stanhope gig was a very popular design, first built in 1815 by Tilbury, a London coachbuilder, for the Hon Fitzroy Stanhope.

The Dennett gig
Tumblr media
While she was buying the gig Anne was considering these other types of gigs, which were popular at the time.
The Dennett was also a two-wheeled gig driven by a single horse. It was enclosed at the rear and had room for luggage. Differences between the types of gigs consisted mostly in the number and arrangement of springs applied, and the additional space and equipment provided.

The Tillbury gig
Tumblr media
The Tillbury was a lightweight, two-wheeled, spindled-back seat gig, with no boot and no top. It was designed for short-distance rides around the town.
In Anne's own experience it's really difficult to understand all these types of gigs:  “ ... surely the man at Leeds did not understand the difference between this [Tillbury] and a Dennet – there is a difference in the springs, the former having a cross spring, or more springs in some way or other the (lancer shafts) are more bent at the ends, and the box put under the seat is smaller than in a Dennet … ” (Transcription by Dorjana Širola)

A Phaeton
Tumblr media
A Phaeton is a sporty open carriage, with a minimal body and typically with four extravagantly large wheels. It’s very lightly sprung and has no sidepieces in front of the seats. With open seating, it was considered fast and dangerous. Estate owners would gallop in them showing off. Phaetons can have a folded top as you can see here. Rawson’s gig is a phaeton!
Tumblr media
The gig from episode 1 that caused little Henry Hardcastle to lose his leg is actually a phaeton. Open, very fast and dangerous, with minimal space for anything else but the driver.
Mr Priestley’s carriage
Tumblr media
Another carriage from the show is Priestley's carriage in which Ann Walker drives away from Shibden Hall after visiting with the Priestleys at the end of episode 1. It's also shown when Mr Ainsworth is leaving from the Priestleys in episode 5.
Mrs Lawton’s carriage
Tumblr media
There are many other carriages and gigs in the show. Like this one, that brings Mariana Lawton to Shibden Hall in episode 1. Carriage or a coach is a closed 4-wheeled vehicle pulled by 2-4 horses. Horses are controlled by a coachman who sits in a seat up front raised up high for a good view. For private carriages groom would usually do the duties of the coachman. A coach might have a built-in compartment called a boot, used originally as a seat for the coachman and later for storage. A luggage case for the top of a coach was called an imperial; the top, roof or second-story compartment of a coach was also known as an imperial.
Miss Walker’s carriage
Tumblr media
This is Miss Walker's carriage which we see a couple of times through the show. This is the  carriage in which they went to York and back in episode 4 and the carriage which goes all the way to Scotland to take Ann back with James and the Priestleys.
Mrs Stansfield Rawson’s carriage

The carriage in which Mrs Stansfield Rawson and Miss Delia Rawson visit Ann Walker at the beginning of episode 3.
Mr Rawson’s Landau
Tumblr media
The type of carriage Christopher Rawson uses to get to work is called Landau. Landau is a type of a four-wheeled carriage with the folding top divided into two sections, front and rear, latched at the center. Both of the sides can be pulled down exposing the passengers to the fine weather. It was designed for transport through towns, enabling passengers clothes to be seen from outside. It was to become a matter of status and luxury to own one of these. Today in some cities Lord Mayors still use them in ceremonial occasions.

Landaulette
Tumblr media
And then we had recently in Brian Moseley's transcriptions:
“Friday 14 April 1820 Down stairs at 10-1/4 - Mariana and I, went up to Whitewindows to see Mr George Priestley’s carriage horse, (only one as yet bought) and his new dark blue landaulette built by Windus, a great city builder in town [pret?] between 4 and £500, and which, with the Priestley and Lea arms, quartered, and those of Kirkman in an escutcheon of pret[ence?] done au large on each pannel, is a city-like looking concern.”
A landaulet or landaulette carriage is a cut-down (coupé) version of a landau horse-drawn carriage. The landaulette retains the rear half of the landau's two-part folding top.

Fly
Tumblr media
Again somewhere I read about another type of transport Anne used (sorry, can't remember where I read it!). Fly was a light horse-drawn public vehicle or a delivery wagon intended to move quickly and reach its destination in a hurry. Really interesting article here: https://brightonmuseums.org.uk/discover/2013/01/17/the-brighton-man-fly/
Lady Stuart’s carriage

The carriage which Anne uses when travelling between Richmond and London when going for Vere's wedding in episode 2.
Mr Sutherland’s carriage

Another travelling carriage, the one that belonged to the Sutherlands in ep 7.
Anne’s yellow carriage
Tumblr media
Anne had a carriage as well, which she ocassionally used for her travels. In the show we can see it in episodes 7 when she collects it from the Norcliffe's and stops at York to have a chat with dr Belcombe. Also when she is in London staying with Mariana. She goes to Copenhagen with Miss Ferrall in her carriage as well. Also they filmed Anne(s) in it going to the wedding.

Or when she's arriving to Copenhagen, and the carriage is just being taken off the vessel. :) This is an excellent website on Regency types of carriages with good photos if you want to see more: https://regency-explorer.net/a-carriage-enthusiasts-paradise/
Caleche
Tumblr media
At the beginning of episode 8, aunt Anne reads Anne's letter sent from Germany: “At Kassel Miss Ferrall and I took a calache and went to visit the Palace d’Hercule … “ The calash was a light carriage with small wheels, a body in the form of a boat and a folding top. Inside, it had seats for four passengers, outside was a separate driver’s seat. The calesh was mainly used for pleasure driving in a park. The caleche was the forerunner of the barouche, a carriage fashionable in the 19th century.
Britzka
Tumblr media
Just the other day I read this line in Anne Lister's diary : Sunday 5 October 1834 “saw my father and Marian off in their new Britska-phaeton” (Thank you gentlemanjackthelass on Insta) and, of course, had to google this type of carriage. Also wondering, are we going to see it in Season 2?
The Britzka is a type of opened horse-drawn carriage on 4 wheels pulled by 2 horses. And that’s about it with its similarities with the phaeton. Britzka was a long, spacious carriage with a folding top over the rear seat and a rear-facing front seat. It could be adapted with all manner of conveniences (beds, dressing tables and so on) for the traveller.
