My local queer bookstore is being threatened with eviction over their free narcan and fentanyl test strips, free store for the unhoused, and free narcan trainings.
Bluestockings is an incredible worker-owned community space that has been apart of the Lower East Side for 25 years. But in the last couple years, they've faced increasing harassment from the wealthier neighbors moving in and complaining about the presence of unhoused people around their store front. Despite all their community work being allowed by their lease, the landlord is pushing for an eviction.
Please help support Bluestockings! Visit them (if you're local), order books online, donate! We need more queer and community-oriented spaces, not another overpriced coffee shop or chain franchise.

Dean Obeidallah at The Dean's Report:
Donald Trump doesn’t care that his lie accusing Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio of eating people’s pets is causing a spike in anti-immigrant hate incidents in the area or was the reason for a bomb threats Thursday morning targeting the local government and local schools on Friday. It also doesn’t matter if you fact check Trump on this BS claim. This is not about the truth. Nobody—I mean nobody—understands what animates, radicalizes and incites his base to vote, make threats and commit violence more than Trump. That is why he is targeting both Black people and immigrants with his lies. This is racism for a purpose. He gets that with one lie, he is targeting two communities that MAGA hates: Blacks and immigrants.
As we all recall, Trump--as President--slammed the idea of accepting more immigrants from Haiti and Africa calling them “shithole countries.” Instead, Trump stated he wanted more people coming in from places like Norway aka white people. Trump’s base loved that. That is why during the debate Tuesday, Trump repeatedly fear-mongered about non-white people coming over the border, declaring, “What they have done to our country by allowing these millions and millions of people to come into our country.” He then added the now infamous line, “In Springfield, they're eating the dogs…they're eating the cats. They're eating the pets of the people that live there.”
ABC News co-moderator David Muir instantly fact checked Trump saying “ABC News did reach out to the city manager there. He told us there have been no credible reports” of any animals being treated that way by immigrants. But Trump remained defiant, saying, “But the people on television say their dog was eaten by the people that went there.” When Muir factchecked Trump again, he then offered this ominous line, “We'll find out.” Trump’s lie at the debate about Haitian immigrants was something his base has been worked up about for days—as Trump knows. The first prominent right winger to amplify the lie was Trump’s close ally Charlie Kirk—who has a history of making racist comments about Blacks--posting just days before the debate on Twitter that “residents of Springfield, OH are reporting that Haitians are eating their family pets.” His post was viewed more than 4 million times.
Trump’s son, Donald Jr. then amplified the lie on social media that Black migrants were kidnapping and eating people’s cats and dogs. Next Elon Musk -the owner of Twitter and vocal Trump backer--did the same. That got the attention of the Trump campaign. If the MAGA base believes/loves the claim Black immigrants are such savages that they are eating people’s pets, they were going to join. That is why on Monday, Trump’s running mate JD Vance claimed in his post viewed more than 10 million times that “reports now show people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country.” A short time later on Monday, as the NY Times reported, the Trump campaign did a massive email blast to their supporters quoting the lie about the Black immigrants.
[...] In reality, Springfield residents have overall been welcoming to the Haitian immigrants to their community over the past four years. Jamie McGregor the head of McGregor Metal, a family-owned business in Springfield, told The New York Times how it was lacking workers after it had invested to increase production before "the Haitians were there to fill those positions." Joe Ruck, a co-owner of Champion City Cuts Barber Shop, told USA Today that Haitian immigrants are working the jobs no one else wanted. But Trump’s lies have embolden the haters in Springfield. As Newsweek documented, there has now been a surge in vile comments directed online and in person against Springfield’s Haitian community. A 19-year-old, who graduated from Springfield High School and now works at an Amazon warehouse said he has been called a "dirty Haitian" and an "illegal."
[...] Despite many officials warning that Trump’s lie will lead to violence against the Haitian community or Blacks in general, he refuses to stop. On Thursday night in the midst of this backlash and after the bomb threats, Trump again repeated the lie to his supporters at a rally in Arizona, telling them “20,000 illegal Haitian immigrants have descended on a town of 58,000 people, destroying their way of life.” (The Haitians in Springfield are in the US legally.) The convicted felon added the lie that these migrants are “walking off with their pets.” And earlier on Thursday, Trump posted five digitally doctored photos on social media of himself saving pets from migrants—including the racist image at the top of this article where Trump is saving a white cat from angry Black people.
Dean Obeidallah’s column on the Springfield Cat-Eating Hoax is spot-on. Donald Trump, JD Vance, and the right-wing media’s racist and xenophobic scapegoating of Haitian migrants has led to bomb threats and a rise in anti-immigrant hatred in Springfield, Ohio.

Press note about the invitation to Music Tapes’ Lullabies Tour. Tiny Mix Tapes, 8th July 2010
"But let’s break this down for a second — you write to [email protected] to request a visit and a time slot, should you be so lucky. Some strange people who you’ve never met come to your house and sit in your bedroom as you lie in bed, presumably already in pajamas and with your teeth brushed. You’ve never met these people before, but appreciate a hopeful snuggle with sort-of celebrities. Actually, do you even know what Julian Koster looks like? Do you know for sure he’s not someone who will break in your house and steal your LP collection, turntable, and important electronics? (Note: I’m assuming he’s not.)"
This is a weird bit of promo work. The Music Tapes, a.k.a. Julian Koster, recently announced that in August, he will serenade sleepy fans at their personal bedsides in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. These are purportedly much better than the cutesy ditties you wish your mom sang to you as a kid before she turned off the light; The Music Tapes will perform bedtime-appropriate songs from Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes (TMT Review), The 1st Imaginary Symphony for Nomad, and a few new songs.
But let’s break this down for a second — you write to [email protected] to request a visit and a time slot, should you be so lucky. (Note: I’m assuming he’s not.)
And though Julian Koster did this sort of thing once before (for the last two Christmases, he offered his services as a caroler house-to-house in the Midwest and the Eastern seaboard — TMT News), does he really want to risk entering a stranger’s house, letting himself be encircled by said stranger and his/her friends and family, and simply trust that his warm milk will be unadulterated and that the door will remain unlocked from the outside?
Okay, so Julian Koster isn’t exactly G.G. Allin and his fans probably don’t tend towards violence, but somebody’s got to think of these things. Can’t you just request to sip Sleepytime tea in a well-lit coffee shop, surrounded by people, right after rush hour but before dark?
Anyway, the same people who emailed [email protected] will receive information about a secret location and time to play “St. Nikolai the Wonder Worker’s Wishing Game of Candles” (sort of like freeze-tag, with foot-tall candles) the night after The Music Tapes’ nocturnal visitations. So go ahead and shoot ‘em an email; you can’t lose any sleep over it.

Pizzaiola Pizzeria & Restaurant - Oceanside Plaza on Long Beach Road in Oceanside, NY
It's not often I have the opportunity to try a new pizzeria on Long Island, so I took advantage recently to try Pizzaiola in Deer Park, a spot recommended to me by my co-worker (and Lawn Guyland native) Alexa. First off, the location is VERY Long Island, being smushed in the corner of a shopping center. However, sometimes that's where the best NY pizza is, and Pizzaiola honestly didn't disappoint. They had a number of incredible looking slices that I wish I could have gotten, but I stuck to a plain and a buffalo chicken.
I opened with the plain and loved every second of it. Wet and flavorful cheese, light sauce with the right amount of seasoning, and crust with a nice light crisp to it. Honestly I have nothing bad to say about it, this plain checks pretty much all the boxes you'd look for in a good slice of pizza. The buffalo also looked awesome, but unfortunately didn't quite reach the expectations set by the plain. The bleu cheese seemed to be baked into the cheese because it was not saucy at all and it threw off the flavor for me. It resulted in the bleu cheese being overly spotty which left some bites with way too much and others with far too little. The chicken also didn't have much flavor or kick to it, but there was some weird seasoning sprinkled over the slice that added a different unnecessary flavor instead. Kinda disappointing, especially for the $5 price tag.
Had I just got the plain, I probably would be giving Pizzaiola a 6. However, the lackluster buffalo and the high cost ($9 for the pair) knocks it down to a 5 for me. I can definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for a good South Shore plain slice, but think twice if you're going for a specialty.

Nico and Logan meet at a coffee shop that she works at (owns?) and it’s in New York. Nico just happens to pop in one day while they’re in the city for a game. He meets Logan and all of a sudden he’s going out of his way to drive all the way into NY to get a cup of coffee.
yes! i imagine her little shop to be part bookstore, part coffee shop, with some bouquets of flowers that you can purchase, just cute and lovely,
and nico is making this commute all the time just to see her and sometimes he comes and she’s not there and he just pouts while the workers are texting logan like crazy “OMG HE’S BACK” and stuff like that
nico comes late one night, like 45 minutes after they close and he’s not expecting her to be there and is upset the game went so long. but she’s restocking shelves and he knocks on the door and she lets him in (i imagine it to be raining for the drama) and she’s like “you’re tracking water in” and then he just kisses her

NY Gov Declares War on Shoplifters
New York Governor Kathy Hochul gave her annual State of the State address this week and surprised some of us by addressing an issue that she previously had seemed determined to ignore. Any shopowner in New York City and many other parts of the state has long been aware that retail theft is out of control, just as it’s become in so many large cities. Shoppers are equally aware that they are finding shops with all of the products locked up or empty shelves, while others have simply shut down. Through it all, Hochul has insisted that things aren’t as bad as you think they are. That changed, as she declared a “war on shoplifting,” declaring that “the chaos must stop!” Welcome to the party, pal, and hopefully this will be a case of better late than never. But what does she plan to actually do about it? (NY Post)
Gov. Kathy Hochul declared war against shoplifting on Tuesday, saying retail thievery in New York has spiraled out of control — with many products in stores under lock and key. Hochul unveiled a multi-pronged plan to tackle the shoplifting scourge, including boosting penalties for offenders who assault retail workers. “I say, ‘No More!’ The chaos must stop!,” she said during her 2024 State of the State address delivered in Albany. The governor’s plan would create a new category of crime to prosecute those who sell stolen goods online and set up a new “smash and grab unit” in the New York State Police Department to prosecute theft rings.
Let’s break down the Governor’s plan into the basic bullet points.
Create a new category of crime to prosecute those who sell stolen goods online
A “smash and grab” unit in the State Police Department
Dedicated funding for DAs to prosecute retail crime
A joint state, local, and federal retail theft operation
Crime Analysis Centers to gather data from victimized retailers
A tax credit for merchants to cover security costs
Rather than dumping cold water all over this proposal, allow me to offer some credit to Governor Hochul for taking this seriously. She has set forth an ambitious plan and parts of it are not all that different from what Los Angeles has been doing with at least some limited success. They too established a specialized task force and began breaking up some of the fencing operations.
The other items on the list all look promising as well. But just as other governors and mayors have learned, a plan like this can’t simply be hammered through by executive fiat. She’s going to require a lot of cooperation to make this work and that is far from assured. No new laws will be passed without the consent of the state legislature which is still controlled by progressive Democrats. Even if new laws are passed and new task forces established, the police can arrest all the people they like but it won’t make a difference if the DAs won’t prosecute the suspects. And New York has some of the worst DAs in the country. Just because she wants to give them more funding doesn’t mean they will use it productively.
The Governor has already addressed the issue of soft-on-crime DAs in the state once. She has the power to remove a DA who refuses to enforce the law but has been reluctant to use it. If she runs into the same problems under this new game plan, she needs to be ready to step up to the plate and start booting some people out of their offices.
If she can put all of those puzzle pieces together, it’s just possible that she could set the state and the Big Apple on a path toward normality. If so, I will be happy to publicly applaud her for it. Heck, I might even consider voting for her. (It’s not like New York is going to elect a Republican any time soon anyway.) In any event, this looks like a tentative step in the right direction. And it’s a badly needed one.
youtube
Because these Mass Looter Mobs are members of a privileged and protected class it will be interesting to see if Law Enforcement in New Your will follow through. Personally I don't see that happening. Just like the rioters in 2020 they will never see the inside of as prison and the looting will continue.

THE LIFE IN BULLETPOINTS.
originally from buffalo, new york with immigrant parents, nira was an only child with a lot of secrets and a lot of aspirations.
she kept her head low and often avoided social situations thorugh schooling strictly due to lack of emotional care. she would rather spend most of her time drawing in her notebooks over paying attention to class, though she had fairly good grades for the majority of her school career.
they'd always been interested in girls, though typically she never expressed her sexuality to anyone other than herself due to the struggles of being gay in a very restrictive and oftentimes unaccepting household.
tired of being the golden child, they set out to eventually avoid going to college -- instead saving up money through their summer jobs and part-time endeavors between school years.
eventually this led to meeting their first ever relationship with romina cortez, who lived in the same area as nira at the time. nira spent most of their time engulfed in this relationship, suddenly shifting gears with what she wanted to do with her career. this relationship, however, would take a hard turn - leaving nira brokenhearted and ultimately pining for a future she was ready to create with someone she barely knew.
after the relationship died, nira realized she'd nearly abandoned her desire to leave new york altogether. at the age of twenty, she made the choice to ditch buffalo with just a backpack to her name, eventually stumbling onto aurora bay after researching places that could live up to the aesthetic she once craved as an artist.
ultimately all she had ever wanted to do was live in art. originally striving towards a career in cinematography, she drew a lot of inspiration about the sea and the natives of this town. although she never said much to people, she was constantly people watching on her extensive walks around the town.
eventually this gave her the freedom to express her individuality, as well as her realization of being nonbinary. nira would go by she/they pronouns to those closest to them.
instead of returning to a film career, nira took up an apprenticeship at a tattoo shop for piercing. eventually she landed herself a job at crescent moon, where she's spent a better part of a few years now working as their sole piercer.
for now, nira lives to work only in her hobbies, and still tries to connect with the artistry that drew them to aurora bay in the first place.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
September 27, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
Exactly a week ago, Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News reported that Republican House leaders were talking about moving the government funding debate away from spending levels—their original complaint—to border security. “[T]he vast majority of House R[epublican]s,” Sherman wrote, “would rather fight on border policy than spending.”
True to form, party leaders today began to insist that we are barreling toward a shutdown because of President Joe Biden’s policies on the southern border. House speaker Kevin McCarthy says he wants to meet with Biden to “cut a deal.”
But, of course, McCarthy already cut a deal with Biden, back in May, that provided a clear roadmap for this year’s funding. McCarthy is refusing to honor that deal.
The Republicans’ willingness to invent a new reason for their threatened government shutdown suggests it was never about principle so much as about power. They are quite aware that the cuts the extremists are proposing before they will agree to fund the government are unpopular, so they have manufactured another reason for the shutdown that they hope will be more palatable to the country.
At any point, McCarthy could agree to work with the Democrats to pass the 12 appropriations bills that will fund the government. Last night, by a vote of 77–19, the Senate illustrated how that could be done by passing a bipartisan continuing resolution to fund the government through November 17 and to provide additional funding for Ukraine.
Today, McCarthy told Republican House members that he would not bring the Senate’s measure up for a vote. Instead, he will continue to court the extremists, who spent the day posturing. At the motion of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), for example, they voted to reduce Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s salary to $1 a year. They went on to pass a number of similarly extreme measures that will never make it through the Senate.
House minority leader Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) accused Republicans of using the threat of a shutdown to jam your right-wing ideology down the throats of the American people.” The bills they were advancing, he said, had “zero chance of becoming law…. And they’re filled with extreme policy poison pills.”
For all that McCarthy is trying to pin the blame for a shutdown on the Democrats, it is the House Republicans who are refusing to perform the most basic of government procedures: fund the government for the next year. When Republicans have shut down the government in the past, the American people blamed them for it, and today Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called out his House colleagues, clearly trying to isolate them, likely hoping to keep them from tainting the whole party in the eyes of voters before the 2024 election.
McConnell called out his colleagues on their new switch to complain about border security: “A vote against a standard short-term funding measure is a vote against paying over $1 billion in salary for Border Patrol and ICE agents working to track down lethal fentanyl and tame our open borders. Shutting down the government isn’t an effective way to make a point,” he said.
The 2024 election was also on former president Trump’s mind today. He was in Michigan tonight to try to draw attention away from the Republican primary debate that he refused to attend. But while President Biden yesterday visited the United Auto Workers picket line, Trump visited a non-union shop and talked about a future “fueled by American energy” and “built by highly skilled American hands and high-wage American labor.” As Craig Mauger of the Detroit News noted, however, “his address was short on specifics for how he would accomplish the goals.”
Trump told the crowd to get the UAW to support him, but the UAW doesn’t represent the workforce where he was speaking. Mauger noted that one woman holding a “union members for Trump” sign acknowledged she wasn’t a union member, while a man with a sign that said “auto workers for Trump” said he wasn’t an autoworker. The plant where Trump was speaking employs about 150 people, but 400–500 Trump supporters were there for his speech.
Yesterday, UAW president Shawn Fain said, “I find it odd he’s going to go to a non-union business to talk to union workers. I don’t think he gets it.”

I was curious so I went to put some very rough numbers on this.
Bret Devereaux quotes a study by J.S. Lee in The Medieval Clothier estimating about 42 hours to spin and weave a yard of cloth in the 14th century. (This doesn't count the time producing the fiber on farms, or the sewing.) A modern men's suit takes somewhere between 3 and 4 yards of cloth. So producing that outfit would have taken something like 150 hours of work in the 14th century.
I had real trouble finding the data I wanted for the current US. I wanted median hourly wages, but I could only find average hourly wages (about 35 USD/hour) and median weekly wages (appears to be about 1150 USD/week, which works out to a little less than 30 USD/hour.) To be lazy we'll say 30 USD/hour. I also found 25th percentile usually weekly earnings, which is about 800 USD/week or about 20/hour.
So with the amount of labor it would have taken to produce a suit in the 14th century, the median full-time worker makes something like 4500 and the 25th percentile worker makes something like 3000.
A Savile Row bespoke suit costs a little over six thousand dollars. Which is more, but Savile Row is the absolute top end of this. When I got my dance tailsuit made (admittedly ten years ago), it was about 1500. I googled for a NY bespoke tailor, and the first hit says full suits start at 2500. This roundup I found via Reddit has a collection of bespoke shops in NYC starting with suits around 2000. (I picked NYC because I expect them to have some of the highest-end stuff in the US.)
So a US median wage earner can probably get about two bespoke suits made for the amount of labor that would have gone into making the cloth for that much suiting in the 14th century. And the modern one is going to have nicer cloth and higher-quality tailoring than I'd expect that person to have; yes, most women had serious tailoring skills but probably not "high-end bespoke shop" skill, in the same way most women could cook but weren't the equivalent of a modern Michelin-starred chef. But of course most people don't want to spend ten percent of their annual income on clothes, and we have other options now.
Now all those numbers are specific to the time period. If you roll back to the classical world cloth production took like 2-3 times as long, but if you roll forward to the 1800s it took much less time and was much cheaper. (I picked that time period because it seemed relevant to the conversation and also I found numbers for it without having to look very hard.)
where the fuck did the phrase ‘fits like a glove’ come from. ive never worn a glove that fit perfectly in my entire life.

NDIS Assistance With Daily Living
NDIS participants can use their funding for a wide variety of supports and services. However, choosing the right provider is critical to ensure high-quality assistance.
There are two different types of NDIS funding that can assist with daily activities: assistance with daily living and improved daily living. While they sound similar, each has a unique purpose.
Safelane Healthcare
NDIS assistance with daily living can help people with ndis assistance with daily living healthier, happier lives. This type of support can help improve physical and mental health, and also facilitate social interaction and community participation. Additionally, it can help reduce isolation and provide respite for caregivers.
The flexibility of NDIS funding makes it possible to tailor a plan to suit each person’s unique needs. The personalised approach helps people articulate their social needs, embrace individuality, and connect with communities that value diversity.
Safelane Healthcare, a renowned provider of Disability Care and Home Care
Services, has expanded its operations to include NDIS Short Term Accommodation in NSW. This initiative is a result of the organisation’s commitment to providing accessible and inclusive healthcare services that enable individuals with disabilities to lead a fulfilling life. The company believes that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves happiness and independence. To achieve this, the company creates individualized healthcare plans and aspires to become a powerful voice for the disabled community.
Personal Care Services
Personal Care Services (PCS) is a Medicaid benefit that provides assistance with activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living for individuals who need help due to an illness or disability. It helps with basic needs, such as bathing, grooming, dressing, meal preparation and transportation. It also helps with medication management, home safety, shopping and paying bills, and other related tasks.
It is available under both NY’s regular Medicaid and managed long term care programs. PCS is an entitlement, which means that if you meet eligibility requirements, you are guaranteed to receive the services. Therefore, there is no wait list for this program.
To qualify for PCS, an individual must be enrolled in Medicaid and have a Practitioner Statement of Need signed by a doctor or advanced practice nurse. This form must be sent to the local social services district, which will complete a community health assessment. The local Area Agency on Aging will then determine eligibility for this benefit.
Home Care Services
Home care provides non-medical assistance with daily living activities for seniors, those with physical disabilities or chronic health conditions. It includes services like meal preparation, transportation to medical appointments, and help managing medications. Home care can also offer mental stimulation, a sense of purpose and companionship that cannot always be provided by family or friends.
Home healthcare is delivered by trained staff, including nurses and therapists who often use cutting-edge disease management tools, to provide high-quality, personalized care. The services offered range from basic home health aides to highly-specialized home healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists and occupational therapists.
To qualify for home care services, your doctor must sign a medical request form verifying that you or your loved one requires home care. Some home care services are available through community organizations or on a volunteer basis, while others may be covered by government programs, long term care insurance or Medicare. Private pay options are also available.
Support Workers
As the name ndis respite accommodation, support workers provide fundamental physical and emotional assistance to help people live their lives as independently as possible. At Lifeways, our support workers work in a wide range of settings, from home care packages and residential services to community programs.
In addition to helping with daily tasks, support workers also act as a friend and companion for their clients. Whether it’s assisting them with hobbies or organising social outings, they encourage their clients to form connections and feel valued.
They’re familiar with each person’s history, likes and dislikes and are able to offer them personalised support based on their needs. A dedicated support worker can help reduce stress for family members who are relying on them to look after a loved one and can ensure their loved ones are receiving consistent care. They’re a valuable asset for any family. And they have great career prospects too, with many moving on to management and supervisory roles in healthcare or social service.

I read this article from the NY Times about Librarians burning out because they're acting as social workers (Link to a paywall free version here: [https://archive.is/V1334]) and went to the official website to read the comments because it's a horrible hobby of mine.
I'm in this field, and I deliberately steered clear of being a public librarian because I do not have the compassion and sympathy necessary for the space. I believe that libraries are a space for all and we should do our best to serve our communities as a locus for information.
Most comments did not seem to quite agree with that idea, saying that libraries should NOT act as community centers in any way, shape or form. People seemed offended by the mere concept of a maker space, let alone a place where a social worker could be found. Hell, there were comments offended that people talk above a whisper now!
Beyond such folks, there were people who talked about how homeless patrons, while often polite and well-mannered, were one of the populations that presented the most stress for them. That is the whole crux of this article after all. Then I came across this comment:
"Public spaces being taken over for private use"
SIr, these people are HOMELESS. They very much do not have any private space to speak of! Furthermore, the Republican Party fucking hates the idea of any kind of public amenity, let alone one of quality! The absolute gall of you to write this comment!
I get some of the arguments here-the dread of finding someone overdosed in the bathroom, the reading room turned into a glorified internet cafe, the general unpleasantness of being around someone you know has not seen a bath in days and the unpredictability of it all. I get wanting *everyone* to be held to a standard, to behave considerately in a public space. It's not an unreasonable desire!
Hell, I told my sister when she lived in Sarasota to spend some of her time working at a library instead of a coffee shop, and the first time she tried a homeless man marched right up to her and started sniffing. She was so unnerved that she never tried again, and I looked stupid for hyping up the library.
Homeless people are people, and their circumstances do not make them a pleasant population to be around. But that does not mean we cannot take yet another fucking place away from them.
I don't know the solution other than solving homelessness. It's not just the woes of the unhoused causing this burn-out. Unparented kids, Karens of the Highest Order, the general lack of post-pandemic manners are all combining to make working at a public library difficult. I entered library school, a masters degree, knowing ALL of this, and chose to pursue being an archivist to avoid this.
IDK, fund housing first, robust social work/mental health programs, community centers with after school programs, and public libraries. Make the fucking social net.
#Other comments pointed out that one reason people aren't taking this seriously is because the profession is female dominated#And they have drawn parallels with the state of teaching (another female dominated job)#I think that's a good point#But really the burnout is part of the fact that we have forced this place to be the ONLY social safety net#Books#public libraries#Support your public library#my two cents

Is Non-Slip Flooring Worth the Investment? A Comprehensive Guide
Regarding flooring, safety, and durability are top priorities, especially in commercial and high-traffic areas. Non-slip flooring has gained popularity for its ability to prevent accidents and provide a secure surface. But is it worth the investment? In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the benefits, types, and applications of non-slip flooring to help you make an informed decision.
The Importance of Non-Slip Flooring
In any setting, slips and falls are a serious risk since they can result in injuries and possibly legal action. By providing better traction, non-slip flooring reduces these dangers. This is especially important in places that get a lot of moisture, such restrooms, kitchens, and entryways. Non-slip flooring protects workers, clients, and guests in business environments where foot activity is continuous.
Benefits of Non-Slip Flooring
1. Safety
The primary benefit of non-slip flooring is enhanced safety. It considerably lowers the possibility of trips and falls, making the atmosphere safer for everybody. This is especially important in places like hospitals, schools, and commercial kitchens where safety is paramount.
2. Durability
Non-slip flooring options are often designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and harsh conditions. Materials like epoxy, rubber, and certain tiles are not only slip-resistant but also durable, making them a long-term investment.
3. Low Maintenance
Many non-slip flooring solutions are easy to clean and maintain. For example, epoxy floors resist stains and spills, making them ideal for busy commercial spaces. This reduces maintenance costs and effort over time.
4. Aesthetic Appeal
The days of compromising beauty for security are long gone. Today, non-slip flooring comes in a variety of designs, colors, and finishes, allowing you to maintain the visual appeal of your space while ensuring safety.
Types of Non-Slip Flooring
1. Epoxy Flooring
Epoxy flooring has grown into a more popular choice for commercial and industrial settings. It has a non-slip surface, is incredibly durable, and can be personalized with various patterns and colors. Due to its chemical and spill resistance, epoxy is ideal for use in kitchens, garages, and warehouses.
2. Rubber Flooring
Rubber flooring provides excellent traction and is soft underfoot, reducing fatigue for people who stand for long periods. It's commonly used in gyms, play areas, and hospitals. Additionally, rubber flooring is simple to maintain and clean.
3. Vinyl Flooring
Vinyl flooring with a non-slip finish is an affordable and versatile option. It can mimic the look of wood or stone, providing an aesthetically pleasing yet safe surface. Vinyl is water-resistant and easy to maintain, making it suitable for various settings.
4. Textured Tiles
Ceramic and porcelain tiles with a textured surface offer a non-slip solution for bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas. These tiles are durable, water-resistant, and available in numerous styles and colors.
Applications of Non-Slip Flooring
Non-slip flooring is essential in many environments, including:
Commercial Kitchens: To prevent slips from spills and grease.
Hospitals and Clinics: To ensure the safety of patients and staff.
Retail Stores: To provide a safe shopping environment for customers.
Schools and Daycares: To protect children in play areas and hallways.
Public Restrooms: To prevent accidents in wet conditions.
Choosing the Right Contractor
When considering non-slip flooring, it’s crucial to choose the right contractor for the job. For those in the Long Island area, working with experienced professionals ensures that the installation is done correctly and efficiently.
Why Choose Commercial Epoxy Floor Contractors in Long Island, NY?

My Old Man
When I was young, my father lived on the streets of DC. Sometimes the railroad tracks or in dumpsters but usually the streets. Back in the day homeless were called bums. Homeless came around about the time of Mitch Snyder and Community for Creative Non Violence.
My mother would take us to the old downtown on Saturdays, mainly to window shop. Once in awhile she would put something away on layaway and make a weekly payment. We usually saw homeless guys. My mother gave them money and told them that she would pray for them. She'd ask them if they had seen Pat. That was my father's street name.
For every homeless guy I saw I'd say to myself, "That's my Dad." I'm 63 years old. To this day when I see a homeless guy I still say to myself, "That's my Dad." Most of them are someone's dad. I always think about their kids and wonder if they ever see them.
My father finally sobered up while in jail. The jail wouldn't let him in the recovery program because they said he was hopeless. Well that pissed him off and he never went back to drinking. He was ornery that way.
He was a sober liquor store salesman. I'd see him once in awhile in high school. Wrote a prayer for him.
"Our Father, who art in the liquor store, hollow be thy wallet."
Now the funniest thing about the prayer is that he never paid child support. Not a dime. In fact when he was going back to Ireland to see family, my grandmother made me give him money for his trip. This was my mother's mother. My grandparents were accepting of the 'weakness' as alcoholism was called.
He was one of the smartest people that I've ever known. When junk bonds made a return in the 70s, my father went off. "They tried that in Venice in the 1530s and look how that turned out." He went on to describe Venice in the 1530s like they were NY wiseguys in the 60s. My sister asked him to stay on this side of the 1600s because no one is going back to the 1500s.
I describe him as a crazy uncle. My grandfather was my father. My father wasn't someone I trusted or liked when I was little. Drunks can do that to you. I learned to like him later in life. He was old and more vulnerable, not much but more. Still the damage was done. I never trusted him but respected him as a human being.
His life was difficult. He was born in Greenwich Village in the 20s. The Depression hit. After the Empire State Building was finished there was no work for his iron worker father. They moved to Ireland but moved back to the States 4 years later when there was work. At 13 my father was sent back to Ireland to go to seminary school. It was 1938. The war was getting going. He was stuck there until he was 19 or 20. Took a Norwegian ship back to the States during the war.
Everyone one has a story no matter how damaged they may be. I've made a peace with him because he is half of who I am. To not make peace is self hatred. It's amazing when you see the world through another's life. It smooths out all the rough places.

Partner absolutely loved working Pizza delivery. He would volunteer for the school lunch delivery. He’d come home with SO MANY stories about his coworkers: Grumpy Old Man and Stoner Mitch. Grump would stand at the front door before official opening and scream curses at them to “come open the gotdam door” which they couldn’t do. He didn’t feel like going around back to the unlocked service door. Mitch would be making a pizza and midway through it, just decide he needed to make wings… forgetting the in-process pizza entirely. He’d also top the cheese by flinging it all the way across the line. But Partner couldn’t stay in the job when his manager was moved to another shop. His manager, who cleared gas & wear for delivery vehicles. His manager, who when he heard Sis had gestational diabetes and a long list of sudden food aversions, let him take home two giant clamshells of salad with as many toppings as we needed and loads of chicken (added Buffalo sauce and ranch, and it kept her alive, quite literally, through the worst of her pregnancy). His manager, who actually cared about the employees in his store, and had record sales between their delivery time and their quality over all the other locals of the same chain. After that, he took a job running SF Chronicles and NY Times in Sacramento. We’d fold papers and be out of the warehouse faster than anyone and never had a complaint (rare for a route that covers several cities inside a county). We got so good, his boss there would hand us a stack of gas cards when they were sent in by the company. He told us with our route, he didn’t have to go back to the warehouse midday to replace a soggy paper, drop one where none got delivered, etc. We were HAPPY.
Sis, who is happiest when given a script and a clear set of instructions, lost SEVERAL JOBS for being too good. She was brought in and told she “just wasn’t a good fit” or “company morale is brought down” by her numbers. Because she didn’t dick around. She did her job, took pride in it, and in one particular temp assignment, they actually resorted to making her “paperclip girl”, whose job in the office was literally to run around collecting spare paperclips and give them to anyone who yelled “I need one”. They hated letting her go, but the job was a particular branch closing down & needing someone to shred massive piles of boxed papers and she’d gotten it done WEEKS ahead of schedule. Just. Happily feeding paper after paper into the shredder and making a pile of paperclips she’d pulled off of them.
Partner is now a SAH. Sis found an awesome WFH/WFO hybrid whose whole job is running programs on wiped hard drives for new workers, running tech support, and reporting when broken hard drives are on their way to the main hub to be repaired and wiped.
Sigh.
