Startup And Entrepreneur Perspective By Shivani Sharma Chefpreneur And Founder - Gourmestan
1. How did your culinary background influence the creation and development of Gourmestan?
My culinary background is of a chef, and what influenced me to start Gourmestan was that there was nobody working with millets, clean eating and gut-friendly food, at the time. I was inspired to create artisanal products using base ingredients that are easily available in the country, to also introduce an element of sustainability. That inspired me to start Gourmestan. The motivation that drives me is my absolute inner desire to make people eat, and for them to embrace eating healthy.
2. How does Gourmestan stay innovative in the ever-evolving culinary industry?
Gourmestan stays innovative because the chefs and the team driving Gourmestan are innovative. We are always trying to create something completely new and seasonal. We are always looking at current trends and trying to adapt those with our signature healthy twist.
3. Are there any new markets or regions you are planning to expand into in the near future?
Yes. In terms of India, I am looking to expand to the southern region, especially to cities such as Hyderabad and Bangalore. And overseas, I am looking at the UK, the United States and UAE as markets.
4. The culinary market in Dubai is booming along with its overall growth. What are your thoughts on this trend, and how does Gourmestan plan to capitalize on the opportunities in Dubai?
Gourmestan will definitely be growing in the Gulf region, with a different concept. We are keenly looking at expanding our presence in Dubai and UAE. These regions are highly influenced by brands from Europe, the UK and the US – people here travel very frequently, since the UAE is a multi-nationality country. Thus, there is excellent recall and recognition for brands they have experienced overseas.
At the same time, the UAE is now also moving towards creating their own homegrown brands. Even expats from other nations are creating and growing new concepts in this region. I do see a good mix of both, but I also see that this mix brings its own set of challenges – it is a very diverse market and to capture this diversity, you must have a palate which matches the people living here.
5. How do you perceive the current market for the culinary industry? What are some of the emerging trends you’ve noticed?
I think the current F&B industry is growing. I feel that more people are becoming aware about clean eating. And so, I am seeing FMCG brands developing mass product lines that are attuned to the principles of clean eating.
Consumers are increasingly becoming health-conscious, especially after the pandemic, and are consciously choosing clean products. I also see the industry evolving, with specific niches emerging. However, foraying into the clean gourmet space does involve a high level of risk – not every player has the palate and pocket size to regularize an experience that is inherently expensive and labour-intensive.
All in all, I believe that the emergence of FMCG goods in this category will infuse innovation and that their presence is here to stay.
6. What do you think are the key factors driving the growth of the culinary industry today?
The key factors driving the growth of the culinary industry are innovation, experiential setups and experiential concepts in the culinary industry. Another important and heartening trend I have observed is chefs and entrepreneurs reimagining the local cuisines of India and interpreting them in a much more defined and refined form, to make them more accessible.
7. How has the market landscape changed since you started Gourmestan, and how has your business adapted to these changes?
I have observed many talented people coming into the industry and creating amazing brands. However, even as we acknowledge and appreciate their presence, as a brand we are looking inward to constantly maintain our standards and offer goods that delight our clientele, rather than regarding them as competition. For our team, consistency matters the most. Our brand is known for its focused approach to clean, gourmet products with an emphasis on locally and sustainably produced ingredients – so, we look inwards and try to keep bettering what we do the best.

imagine: Kate’s maternal uncle and auntie coming into the picture and they love her… but ignore Mary and Edwina completely. They hold a grudge and think Mary maliciously kept their niece away from and forced her to give up her dowry for Edwina to come to England.
So, they come over, find out about the chaos and decide to stir shit up and bring Kate back with them. They first act unassuming and act all pleasant. Slowly… They try to make Mary look like the bad guy, Kate’s Aunt making a scene and crying her eyes out of something Mary ‘said’ and painting Mary as a wicked stepmother and Edwina a ungrateful half sister. Both of them try ensure that it’s not the case and that they love Kate but as Kate’s aunt ran out sobbing and telling the Bridgerton and Danbury that she never felt so insulted and will NEVER come back. Kate’s uncle acts desperate and gently tells Kate to come by as soon as she can as her aunt needs her. He needs her.
One thing should be clear, they both LOVE Kate. She gets put in a tough situation where she either chooses her maternal family who longs for her to come back with them OR stay with the family back here and who want her to stay.
I like to think that Kate’s mother was likely related to the Majaraj in India, maybe not a sister, but a distant cousin, because in India, Kate’s father had a moderately comfortable way of life, so it’s possible that they were very well connected at least until Kate’s father died. And her maternal family thought that once the mourning period was over Mary would take Edwina and go back to England with ‘her people’ but Kate would of course stay and marry back into the family, to one of the sons of the Majaraj or any of the high ranking officials in court who would keep her in the same comfortable lifestyle she was used to. But Kate decided to go to England with Mary and Edwina instead so her maternal family felt like somehow their little cousin’s only child was sacrificing all her oportunities in India for Edwina and Mary’s sake.
So of course, Kate’s family has to go ‘rescue her’ from those stick in the mud Brits who wouldn’t know real tea if it was serve to them in golden teacups. And show up right in the middle of the season, just as Kate is both trying to pretend she gets along with Anthony for Edwina’s sake, and also fend him off because apparently he’s insistent on marrying her sister.
Here’s where it gets funny, because if you’ve ever met an Indian Auntie and an Indian Uncle, you know they are persistent and they are very argumentative. And Aunties in particular tend to be… loud. So the Bridgertons, particularly Anthony, always end up overhearing that Kate used to have a seemingly perfect life when her father served the Majaraj and now her Aunt and Uncle think she’s been reduced to servitude.
I can imagine them being the perfect house guests but the minute everyone leaves the dinner table, Auntie Shivani starts trying to convince Kate to go back to India with them, using the typical arguments.
‘You would be so much more comfortable at home bebi’
‘Listen to your Aunt, you could be singing and dancing with the daughters of the Majaraj, instead look at this, all British people, long faces, no good music’
‘Come to India Kathani, as soon as were back home, Auntie will have your favorite Gobi Paratha made to celebrate, why do you want to be here? food in England doesn’t have spices, how can you truly be happy anywhere without spices?’
So Auntie and Uncle try their best to convince Kate that Edwina will be taken care of, because the Viscount likes her already and why not just come back to India and leave Mary to Lady Danbury. Etc Constantly making Mary out to be some downer who leaves everything to Kate and acting like Edwina needs to stop bothering her big sister for everything. Of course they like the Bridgertons because at this point Anthony is taking Edwina out of Kate’s hair, and that’s all Aunt and Uncle Sharma care about. Anthony is about to propose to Edwina, when he again overhears them trying to convince Kate to go home with them, and they bring up that the Majaraj handsome son still wants to marry her so really, this idea of being a governess in India is pointless when she could still marry Rahul and have a houseful of Indian babies. If she doesn’t like Rahul she could still marry Vijay, he’s also handsome and he’s an official.
Anthony has a shock because he was under the impression that Kate was unmarried because nobody had proposed to her, not because she willingly had already rejected her fair share of proposals in India. And the moment she goes back home, she’s going to be swarmed by those good and nice men her Aunt and Uncle keep preaching about. It’s the push Anthony finally needed to make him see that he’s got nothing if he doesn’t have Kate and if he does marry Edwina, she’ll be in a ship to India with her family faster than he can say divorce. So instead of proposing to Edwina, Anthony follows his heart and proposes to Kate. Much to the scandalizing outrage of Uncle and Auntie Shivani. And Kate’s absolute shock.
Can you imagine that anon. because that’s the tea

Bollywood Movies Part CCVIII
Inspector Jatil Yadav (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) investigates the murder of the influential Raghubeer Singh (Khalid Tyabji) on his wedding night to his young second wife Radha (Radhika Apte). As Jatil investigates, he learns more about Raghubeer’s proclivities and about family secrets long left undisturbed, including the truth about the death of Jatil’s first wife (Natasha Rastogi).
CW for movie: human trafficking, rape, sexual abuse of a minor, some gore. Raat Akeli Hai is a good whodunnit that gives us a satisfying ending, while also being a love story. I enjoyed Jatil and Radha’s interactions, but I loved the performances of Shivani Raghuvanshi and Padmavati Rao as the combative Vasudha (Raghubeer’s niece) and the reprehensible Pramila Singh (Raghubeer’s sister-in-law) respectively. Ila Arun was also good as Jatil’s mother who wants him to get married. Favorite song is Ghoom Charkhya (no subtitles).
Kaajal (Bhumi Pednekar) moves out from her cousin Dolly’s (Konkona Sen Sharma) place when Dolly’s husband Amit (Aamir Bashir) makes a move on her and leaves her hated factory job. To make ends meet, she starts working at an adult call center as Kitty and begins an affair with “Pradeep” (Vikrat Massey), one of her callers. Meanwhile, Dolly deals with trying to make ends meet for her and Amit’s new luxury apartment that under construction and with the backlash against her son Pappu (Kalp Shah) liking girly things.
CW: corporal punishment. Dolly Kitty aur woh Chamakte Sitare is a good film about two cousins and their lives. It does a good job talking about women experiencing sex and desire without punishing them for it. It also doesn’t shy away from showing the realities of the society they live in, but doesn’t make those realities disheartening. A great example of this is the call center and how all the women there support each other. Favorite songs are Neet Ve and Khwabida (audio only). Neither song has subtitles.
Akash (Aditya Roy Kapur) goes to local crime lord Sattu Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) to help take down a sex video made of him and his ex-girlfriend Shruti (Sanya Malhotra) without their knowledge. Meanwhile, Aalu (Rajkummar Rao) tries to help the woman he loves, Pinky (Fatima Sana Shaikh), when she comes to him to help get her husband out of jail for being prime suspect in a murder Sattu Bhaiya committed. After being released from prison, Bittu (Abhishek Bachchan), Sattu Bhaiya’s former second in command, meets Mini (Inayat Verma) who has run away from home and agrees with her plan to pretend to kidnap her to get her parents’ attention. Rahul (Rohit Saraf), after being taken by Sattu Bhaiya for being near the murder, manages to get Sattu Bhaiya’s money with the help of nurse Sheeja (Pearle Maaney), but Sattu Bhaiya sends his goons after them to get his money back.
Ludo is an entertaining dark comedy that is structurally based on the board game ludo (more recognizable to Americans as Parcheesi). It was quite entertaining and funny, while also being heartwarming. I loved Bittu and Mini’s story because of how cute it was, especially when Mini prompts Bittu on how to make ransom calls to her parents. Overall, a fun romp. Favorite songs are Qismat Ki Hawa Kabhi Naram (originally from Albela), Aarbaad Barbaad, and Meri Tum Ho. None of the songs have subtitles.
#the great venture into Bollywood#also watch raat akeli hai for the ultimate rejection of fair and lovely cream#i'm pretty sure sheeja was made malayali so they could reference neram by using pistah in a scene in ludo#i don't have a favorite because they're all good but i would most likely rewatch ludo

Mira and a town of relatives
Mira and her father in the episode "The Great Diwali Mystery"
Mira, Royal Detective is one of my favorite series. I have to write about it here on this blog because unlike some other shows, the town where this Indian-inspired series is set, Jalpur, the protagonist, Mira, appears to be related to...everyone! This is like any small town. Anyway, I'd like to break it down for you all, because family ties and the value of family is central to this series, unlike any other that I have ever seen.
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on June 2, 2021.
We do not currently know who Shanti's husband is, or if he is still alive. I created this using one of my favorite sites for creating family trees, Family Echo
Let's start with Mira, herself. She was appointed by Queen Shanti to be the royal detective in the city, and she considers her to be like a daughter. Shanti herself has two sons: Prince Neel, a brilliant and talented inventor, often flying around the city in his flycycle or some other invention, and Prince Veer, the aspiring King of Jalpur. Neel has a crush on Mira. We also know that he has a grand-grandmother who was an inventor and built a submarine, as shown in a recent episode, and has great aunt, Rupa. As for Mira, she has two friends, mongooses who help her out on cases: Mikku and Chikku. They are brothers and have two cousins, who are also mongooses: Preeti and Neeti, who are skilled in rope gymnastics. [1]
Mira, however, is NOT directly related to Queen Shanti. Her father is Sahil, who calls her "beti" when talking to her. Two of her friends, Priya and Meena, are sisters, and her cousins, as is Chotu, a younger brother of Priya and Meena (also known as Mina). Their mother is Pushpa, who is also Mira's aunt. Presumably, Kamala is also her cousin, who has a younger sister named Dimple. The same can, possibly, be said for her friends Pinky, Dhruv Sharma, and Sandeep. Apart from them are two brothers, Ranjeet and Manjeet, a music teacher (Sanjeev Joshi), who are her friends. [2] In a few episodes, the royal Nayapuram family appears, comprised of a king, queen, and their daughter, Princess Shivani.
In order to explain this, I came up with this chart created via one originally shared by Kathleen Brandt, a genealogist who wrote that it is "one of the biggest errors made when referencing cousin relationships."
So, we currently do not know the parents of Kamala and Dimple, Dhruv (whose surname is Sharma), Sandeep, or Pinky. But, it is possible that at least one of their parents is a brother or sister of Sahil and Pushpa. There are also many, many unnamed uncles that Mira meets in the town, meaning that they may be some of these people. Some of these parents may have been featured in some episodes but I'm not aware of them. That is definitely a possibility. Saying all of this, it is possible that Mira is calling older men she meets in Jalpur "Uncle" since, as some have noted, "kids routinely call complete strangers “Uncle” and “Aunty”" even if they aren't related. As Times of India noted in 2015, it is "very common" for those in India to call those older than themselves "Aunty" or "Uncle," with this done out of "respect for the elderly or for fellow humans." That could be the case here, even though the terms can also be used for those that someone is related to, by family ties.
Even so, I think that Pushpa is Mira's aunt, since her name in the show is literally "Auntie Pushpa." [3] In the end, I'll keep an eye on this series and possible write another post on this show later.

Notes
[1] In a recent episode, "The Case of the Vanishing Picnic," Mikku says "its not every day there are cousins that visit from the big city," referring to Neeti and Preeti, showing Mira secret family recipes they have prepared.
[2] This isn't accounting for the Palace Tailor, the two bandits (Manish and Poonam), Ram Sing Ji, and Deputy Oosha who are likely not related to Mira.
[3] In the episode "The Case of the Lost Treehouse," Mira's pa says "there's the tapestry your Auntie Pushpa made for the wall," making it clear this is the case.
