Kedu is that the most vital festival of the Kondhs of Phulbani, where they're largely concentrated. they're also found in certain areas of the districts of Ganjam and
Koraput.
The festival is held in several villages in several years. The place and date of the festival are decided years
ahead.
This festival was well-known for the human sacrifice ‘Meria’ which was
totally stopped during British rule out India.
However, to protect the religious sentiments of the tribals this has been
substituted now by buffalo-sacrifice.
This festival continues for five days and
different rituals are prescribed every day. The sacrifices are made on the third and therefore the fourth days during the cruelest manner.
The animal is tethered within the place of worship. Men and ladies get drunk, dance in the frantic mood then kill the animal by cutting its limbs piece by piece.
Then
they carry the blood and a bit of meat and bury it within the field where they produce turmeric. They believe that this is able to yield them an honest crop of turmeric as red because of the blood of the animal.
Through this festival, they propitiate
Mother Earth.
At the endeavor of the local people, teachers, and officialdom, dramas were shown at the recreation center of the District
headquarters. The Kalamandap is employed for such entertainment programmes.
The Sakhi Dance of Ganjam
was also practiced here for a few time. At Balimela, under the sponsorship of Gopabandhu
Cultural Centre and Tamasa Art Centre, cultural programs also are held. Tribal folk songs also are relayed by Jeypore Akashbani Centre.
within the observance of of these songs and dance, there also are certain taboos that these tribes prevent from, like those associated with incest and adultery.
But still, sometimes, there's relaxation of rules, like that forbidding men and ladies of an equivalent village to bop together.
Dancing is one activity about which all men and ladies are passionately keen on. During festivals, dancing parties begin at nightfall, last
whole night, and continue even through the subsequent day.
Each tribe has its own particular dance and practice
different sort of music for various seasons and occasions.
The Koyas have a stimulating dance, during which the lads tie buffalo or
bison horns on their heads and have interaction in mimic fights;
their women also dancing prettily during a ring with their hands on each other’s shoulders.
The Parojas
dance and therefore the dances of the
Gadabas are simpler but no les spirited. Many entertainment and cultural
programmes were organized by the officials working in the Dandakaranya Project.
Public Relation Officers of Dandakaranya Project also arranged film shows in
villages.
