Shinvi - 15 to 30

I mean, Shinvi are definitely gonna get the short end of the stick here because I am just not a fan of r&b/ballads/slow jam/whatever the genre of this album is. My understanding is that early kpop especially is influenced by the Korean ballads of the time, so that’s probably what’s going on here. A lot of weird mixing decisions – again, it could be my headphones, but I didn’t notice those issues with the other groups. There was like, one single song with rap, maybe two? And that’s fair enough because their music didn’t really lend itself to rap much anyway. This is probably the least popular of the groups I’ve seen so far (although the view counts on the playlist I was using probably aren’t the most-viewed videos of the songs). Either way, this album was “meh” at best, nothing at all stuck out to me except the title “Cat Step” which is cute. Average score of 5.8 which… yeah, not great.

The only lyrics online are from some French site using romanized korean, so I’m gonna chuck the romanization into ChatGPT and see what it can tell me

According to the ChatGPT translation… this song has nothing to do with cats, aside from one mention of cats in the first verse. This is disappointing.

I was curious about the groups under SM a while ago and decided to look them up. There are some artists I never knew about (Isak N Jiyeon-a female duo, J-Min and Beat Burger). Shinvi, M.I.L.K, Black Beat, & Sugar I forgot about, and then CSJH & Fly to the Sky I keep forgetting were under SM.

Maybe I should look into other companies and do something like this. It might be interesting.

Shinvi (신비) was a girl group under Cid.K Ent. (subsidiary of SM Ent.) The group consisted of Yoo Soo-jin (유수진), Oh Sang-eun (오상은) and Yoo-na (유나). ''15 to 30'' was actually scheduled to be released in late 2001, but was postponed. After the release of ''To My Friend'' there was held a poll on Shinvi's web-page to let the fans decide which song would be promoted next and ''Darling'' was chosen, it was also used in the game ''Shinig Lore''. Shinvi never disbanded but hasn't had any activity since 2002.

Bighit is not in the Big 3- RANT (please read)

Okay I seen this almost fucking everywhere that fans (mostly Armys) thinking that Bighit has entered the Big 3 and dethroned either YG or JYP, Or that they entered the “Big 4”.

Before I get killed by Armys let me fucking explain myself as I have something to tell you my new Kpop fans. Let me educate you a little bit about Kpop from someone who was into kpop fan since 2012.

If you think Bighit is in the Big 3 then you clearly have no idea what the big 3 is and what it means to be in it.

Being in the Big 3 isn’t about profit and sales as Bighit has surpassed the Big 3 in profit, but being in the Big 3 is about the legacy they hold and how much of a impact they had on Korean society.

SM, YG and JYP Literally shaped kpop and korean society themselves with their groups. All three of them have a long history starting back from the beginning of Kpop in the 90s with their successful 1st generation groups, to their 2nd generation groups that started the Hallyu movement to now with their 3rd generation groups. They paved the path for many modern groups and kpop wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is now without the big 3.

SM, JYP, and YG proved over and over again that they can debut really successful groups, and most of these groups created kpop what it is now. No other companies can come close to become in the Big 3 as no other company comes close to what these 3 has achieved. Few years ago, not debuting in the big 3 meant you’re not gonna be successful and will flop and will be in debt so much longer.

Big3 privilege does exist as groups who debut in one of the big 3 have so much resources, support and has a huge advantage to make themselves big and known, compared to a smaller company which groups has to fight and work so much harder to be recognized by the public.

Bighit is an unknown company who almost went bankrupted and made 1 successful group and no girl groups?? (I say 1 successful as txt is still too new to determine).

Bighit MUST have a girl group in order to enter the big 3 but they don’t cause they’re being a sexist lil shit and won’t let go and shut up about GLAM. Why would the Big 3 want a company who can’t even fucking manage a girl group to be in the big 3 with them as all 3 of them have extremely successful girl groups.

What did Bighit do to kpop and Korean society?? literally make 1 Successful group and have fans who think they’re better then everyone else lol.

(I do believe BTS is influencing Korean society and Kpop right now but not in the scale of the Big 3)

Profit doesn’t qualify a company into the big 3. Bighit exceeded the big 3 with profit, but numbers doesn’t matter. Having 1 really successful group doesn’t qualify a company into the big 3 or big 4, as Big hit doesn’t even come close to what the big 3 has achieved, and would never even come close.

I love BTS with my whole heart but it gets tiring as a multifandom to see this literally everywhere.

Red Velvet - The ReVe Festival Finale

Okay I’m SO curious what the average of these songs is. Let’s do the math here: 7.1. That’s interesting, but I guess that’s right. The bad songs felt so off to me, the title tracks are good, the last song was Excellent. In terms of the broader SM picture, this felt more like a spiritual successor to the earlier groups than SNSD, and I don’t mean that in a good way. This album was a Slog, except instead of slow jams, it was creepy. That said, the good songs are miles better than the stuff you’d get out of Shinvi or M.I.L.K., so that is progress.

Maybe aespa’s concept can be tracked back to Red Velvet, actually. SM liked the creepy parts of RV so much that they decided to make creepy the entirety of aespa’s vibe.

Yeah yeah I know this is a compilation album, and probably one of Red Velvet’s less important releases, but 1) the timeline was looking really empty around this period and 2) I want something that’s gonna have some red and some velvet, and this album seemed like a good way to do that, based on the title tracks. Speaking of, I know the title tracks and nothing else. I’m not gonna watch the MV’s because I’m lazy.

I never totally got the hype behind this song. Kinda like the entire Chill Kill album for me

Maybe I’m just not a velvet kinda guy

The pre-chorus is excellent, I’ll give it that

And that last “everything will be okay” in the bridge is nice

This really is a good song, it’s like Solid. I listen to this song all the time, but it’s not like, Big for me

Behind the scenes of Heechul's casting

When I was in high school I went to SM's auditions, but was an hour late.

Back then I lived in Gangwondo, kids from Gangwondo had no business going to Seoul, not to mention Cheongdamdong (district where SM is located) My friends and I only wrote SM entertainment's address on a piece of paper and drew a simple map; we came quite unprepared. however no matter how hard we've tried to find it we were unable to, with much difficulty we finally reached Cheongdamdong. In front of one of the buildings there was a group of female students. I asked them "Excuse me, where is SM?", they laughed at me and replied "It's here but the auditions ended." Even though they told me auditions ended, I thought that I should risk it and take a look downstairs; the auditions have ended but staff members were still putting things away. The staff told me "I am sorry but auditions have ended already, please come again tomorrow", I replied "I am unable to come tomorrow, I came from Gangwondo". At that moment, the casting leader took a look at me from the back and said "Wait a minute, please come in." This is how I came into the audition room while staring vacantly at the surroundings. Back then there were posters of Black Beat, SHINVI and Milk on the walls. Inside my head I exclaimed "woah" in awe. I was told to sing a song and during that time I really liked rock music which is why I sang a rock song. After I've finished singing it, I was asked to sing the national anthem which I did. It turns out that when someone is singing the national anthem, their usage of techniques such as vibration is very difficult which is why they make you sing it. I sang it all, including the national anthem and was told they will contact me later on. I was then asked where I will go now, I was told that since I am already here I should go to Apgujeong Rodeo road but I said I won't go there and will instead go home. Later on it turned out that this casting director was telling me that if I go walk on that road, I will receive huge amount of casting offers. I went straight home and the next day SM got in touch with me asking me to sign a contract. This is how I ended up in SM.
