Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time Ending: Shinji's Happy Ending?

It's great to hear that the ending of "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time" provides fans with a long-awaited sense of closure and happiness. The resolution, with Shinji creating a new world, free from the conflicts of Angels and EVAs, and finding stability and happiness with Mari, represents a significant departure from the darker and more complex themes of the series. Though it seems completely out of left field that Shinji would end up with Mari, it actually works out.

Shinji and Rei

Though Rei is good to Shinji and is affectionate toward him, this is mixed in with her being created from his mother's DNA and her lack of autonomy. The genetic connection between Rei and Yui brings an inherent familial bond. If romantic feelings were to develop between Shinji and Rei, it could be interpreted as having incestuous undertones, as Rei essentially shares genetic material with Shinji's mother.

Opting for a platonic or sibling-like relationship helps navigate the potential uncomfortable implications of the genetic connection, contributing to a more emotionally stable and healthier friendship between them in the context.

Shinji and Asuka

As Neon Genesis Evangelion is meant as a deconstruction of anime tropes, so is Asuka and Shinji's relationship a darker take on tsundere romance stories.

Asuka's blunt and abrasive demeanor serves as a defense mechanism, masking her own insecurities and traumas. This can make it challenging for Shinji or anyone else to easily discern her true feelings, creating a barrier to establishing a healthy relationship.

Asuka's pride serves as a defense mechanism, shielding her from potential emotional pain. By projecting confidence and superiority, she attempts to avoid vulnerability and rejection. This can be seen in her reluctance to open up to others and her tendency to mask her true feelings.

Shinji is totally unable to give Asuka affection on the terms she wants ("You won't even hold me!") and only goes to her to assuage his own pain. Likewise, Asuka is only ever able to give Shinji tough love (Shinji: "Doesn't everyone hate me?" Asuka: "You idiot, you've just gotten that in your head by yourself!").

Shinji and Kaworu

Kaworu, though wanting to make Shinji happy, does so at the cost of his own happiness. Their relationship becomes a focal point, as Kaworu becomes the first person to genuinely understand and accept Shinji without judgment. However, the complexity arises due to Kaworu's true nature as an Angel and his ultimate mission conflicting with Shinji's role as an EVA pilot.

Though it's admirable that he's willing to help Shinji through his problems and even teach him how to play a piano, his self-sacrificing nature and his Shinji-centric matyrdom would make any relationship beyond the platonic self-destructive in the long run. A romantic relationship with Shinji would be overshadowed by the knowledge of Kaworu's eventual sacrifice, introducing an inevitable and heartbreaking element.

Why Mari Would Be The Best Choice For Shinji's Future?

Rei's true nature means she and Shinji can't be together. Shinji and Asuka confess their feelings but decide they've hurt each other too much and grown too far apart for a relationship. Kaworu realizes he threw himself so far into trying to help Shinji, he forgot himself along the way. In contrast, Mari represents hope for a new life in a new world, as her relationship with Shinji will be unburdened by the past.

This choice in the narrative may reflect the film's theme of moving forward and finding happiness, as Mari is portrayed as a character with less emotional baggage from the series' past. Her energetic and eccentric personality contrasts with Shinji's introverted nature. Their dynamic could bring a positive and lively influence into Shinji's life, potentially helping him break free from his emotional struggles.

Ultimately, the choice of Mari as Shinji's future companion reflects the film's thematic emphasis on moving forward and finding happiness. Ah. Finallh watched all of Evangelion Franchise (except NG:Death&ReBirth) and I-

I- feel so empty. Not in a depressed way, but more like "I can't finally understand now what they've been feeling and I can relate" and that's the thing that shocked me the most. I CAN relate. Especially to Asuka. And Shinji. He's actually one of my fav character of the series. And how many times did I questioned myself and others like Rei. Damn.

I want to erase my memory and re-watch it so bad. But I wish to have seen it sooner. But I regret also seeing it. I should probably sleep.

forgive me in advance i only just watched NGE so my analysis of it is not that in depth and also i have very little prior exposure to its fandom or any other analysis of it so this is messy. but

i'm going to be honest i have peeked a little into the fan culture surrounding NGE and i guess i shouldn't be surprised considering the fanservice-y type stuff (especially in the rebuild movies, i adore them but that's one of the only things i was like. do we really need this many ass shots guys. not a big deal tho idc) but i was surprised anyway by the apparent longstanding history of shipping wars and also just... the way the female characters are treated by the fanbase. like i looked up misato on the tenor gif search to send a gif on discord and was frustrated by all of them being sexual/having sexual comments written on them or just her being a cutesy alcoholic type woman???

NGE has an extremely interesting portrayal of human sexuality and that is a running theme, especially in the original anime and EoE tbh, but like not in a way that makes me invested in shipping. you know me, i am a shipper at heart, i LOVE shipping. and yet i never got into shipping any of the characters. i also think shinji being implied to be with mari at the end of the movies makes a lot of sense. it's not because it'd be straight, i am fully capable of shipping straight couples, but i just find evaluating that theme of sexuality so much more interesting removed from the idea of shipping. (if anything, the only thing i even remotely shipped was misato x ritsuko, and like... i'm not that serious about it)

and simplifying the female characters and especially misato down to objects of affection instead of the incredibly interesting things they represent and who they are as whole people is so wild to me. like forgive me for being on my soapbox, misato is my favorite character i have to, but like. i love misato for being a complex and nuanced adult character with flaws. i love the ways she is mature even past her own age but also immature like a child and how those things coexist. i love how she represents hope in the most bleak of situations because she is always the one going for strategies to win and survive even if the success rate is barely above zero. i love how much of a badass she is when commanding NERV (and WILLE) and the list goes on. so why does she appear to be so often reduced down to jokes about beer and needing her to step on people or something. i assume rei and asuka receive similar treatment seeing how often they are reduced to a petty shipping war IRT shinji

idk NGE is a beautiful work of art that has so much to say and i can't imagine engaging with it in these ways. i know plenty of people are not like this and there's also so much wonderful analysis and sentiment for this series for the past few decades that i still need to sink my teeth into at some point. but damn some of these bitches in the fandom annoying i guess

me: -makes actual arguments and even admits that the ultimate happiness canonically stated in evangelion is shinji x self love more than love with a significant other (or well, mari apparently) and that kaworu's and rei's ultimate happiness is in being separated from shinji (and depending on how you interpret once upon a time's ending, possible being together instead) but that fans can still make transformative opinions and enjoy ships and this doesn't make the ships bad- me: -points out that the entire point of rei's narrative is very explicitly that she is not shinji's mother and clone genetic nonsense does not make them family and the narrative does not push a familial interpretation of them- them: you support tcoaal take a shower

Ya es marzo, y me había olvidado de estas fotos. Mis primeras adquisiciones librescas del año 2023:

Carmine, de Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

Hace años que sabía de este libro, cuya primera edición de 2010 estaba agotada. Se podía encontrar usado, a más de 150 dólares.

Desde hace como 1 mes empezó a salir listado, "nuevo", a unos 60 dólares, en diversas tiendas japonesas. Tenía mis dudas. Varias veces he comprado artbooks o ediciones especiales de Blu Rays japoneses, que el vendedor ofertaba como "nuevos", pero al llegar era evidente que estaban usados, aunque estuvieran en muy buen estado. ¿Cómo era posible que un libro de hace 14 años apareciera nuevo, y a ese precio? Pero cuando vi que no eran ni una ni dos ofertas similares, sino muchas, supuse que debía ser una nueva edición, y lo ordené. Efectivamente, esta es una nueva edición, de septiembre del 2023.

Es una edición grande, de 33cm x 26cm. La calidad del papel e impresión es increíble. Contiene las ilustraciones del manga a tamaño completo de página. Otras, incluso a doble página.

Una cosa que me pareció inusual es la imagen de Asuka de la portada. Usualmente, para la boca hacen sólo una línea, o un óvalo pequeño: una boca sin labios. Esta es una de las pocas veces que un personaje de anime de hecho tiene labios. XD

La cuarta imagen de este set (The End of Evangelion), con la Rei-Lilith al fondo y Shinji al frente, es una pasada. Dan ganas de deshojar el libro y enmarcarla.

Discursos Sagrados, de Elio Arístides. No sé de qué va. Sólo recuerdo que a E. Arístides lo han citado en El Camino a Eleusis (Ruck, Wasson y Hofmann), al describir las celebraciones de los Misterios en Eleusis. Está que he encontrado es una edición de 1989 que se había quedado sin vender en las bodegas de la editorial Akal.

El Parménides de Platón, la edición de Alianza, traducción de Guillermo R. de Echandía. Desde que Gredos terminó de editar las nuevas versiones de las obras completas de Platón, había estado haciendo una relectura, desde el principio. Al llegar a el Parménides (traducción de Ma. Isabel Santa Cruz), he encontrado algunas cosas que no me resultaban claras. Cotejé esos pasajes con la traducción al inglés de Mary Louis Gill y Paul Ryan (Edición Hackett) y tampoco salí de dudas. Así que compré esta de Alianza. La introducción es muy buena, y los pasajes que no entendía me resultaron claros en esta traducción. La recomiendo por encima de las mencionadas.

Plato's Cosmology, de F. M. Cornford (1937). Voy a la mitad, pero ya me parece una obra genial. Es una traducción al inglés del Timeo de Platón, con los comentarios de Cornford. Una de las mejores cosas es que se detiene a comentar las cuestiones matemáticas, que para Platón eran de importancia capital.

Ah. Finallh watched all of Evangelion Franchise (except NG:Death&ReBirth) and I-

I- feel so empty. Not in a depressed way, but more like "I can't finally understand now what they've been feeling and I can relate" and that's the thing that shocked me the most. I CAN relate. Especially to Asuka. And Shinji. He's actually one of my fav character of the series. And how many times did I questioned myself and others like Rei. Damn.

I want to erase my memory and re-watch it so bad. But I wish to have seen it sooner. But I regret also seeing it. I should probably sleep. THIS IS COPY PASTED
