I’ve mentioned it before... but an AU where Light and L are in the Reapers’ Game (from the The World Ends With You) as an unofficial Death Note sequel.
Now I’ll actually explain some of the game, for those who don’t know. While this Game could take place anywhere in the world, the The World Ends With You takes place in modern day Japan (Shibuya, to be exact), which is fitting for Death Note, of course.
...Spoilers for the The World Ends With You here.
The game is the afterlife. And you have to play this Game--with different missions you have to complete each day and survive the Noise (read: the enemies you battle with psychic abilities. More on that later, maybe)--for seven days and make it to the end. If you don’t make it to the end, you’ll be erased (like, literally. Since you’re already dead, there will be nothing left of you if you are erased). If you win, you have the chance to come back to life (which Light and L would probably for sure try to do), or become a Reaper (yeah, there are Reapers in this game, which is also fitting with Death Note. And of course they’re called Shinigami in the Japanese version). Reapers have to erase a certain number of Players, or they themselves will be erased.
And I’m just imagining a scenario where Light and L end up in the game after they die, and try to win the game in order to get their lives back... And you could say this doesn’t even break canon, of Ryuk basically saying Death Note users don’t go to Heaven or Hell and that everyone goes to Mu (nothingness), essentially. Because erasure might as well be that.
Also, in order to play the Game, you have to have a partner that you can fight the Noise with. And... different versions of the game (as it’s been on different systems) may explain this differently, but at least on the DS version (the original version), you and your partner are on different planes as you fight. But you have to trust each other and work together, because you share a health bar. If one of you dies, the other dies.
And it could be delicious putting Light and L into a situation like that, where they have to reluctantly try and trust each other, after Light killed L and stuff. And would be somewhat reminiscent of the handcuffs. LOL
I don’t know if I want to go into too much detail about the The World Ends With You here, because I don’t want to spoil everything for people who might want to pick it up (it’s so worth it). But part of the reason the Composer--the person who is in charge of and orchestrates the Game--lets people come back to life, is because they think their experiences in the Game may change them for the better, and they then may be able to use that to make the city as a whole better.
And speaking of... I haven’t gotten to the topic of entry fees yet! Basically, in order to play the Game, you have to give up what you value most--this is to make the player question if this thing was really as important as they thought it was--and you only get it back if you win the game. I don’t want to spoil too much here, but examples of some entry fees we’ve seen are memories and dreams, but there are a whole plethora of other things they could be. There’s also, potentially, the tiniest tiniest tiniest chance in the world (it happened once as a crazy exception at the end of the first game: huge spoiler there, I guess), that you didn't win the Game and someone else won it for you, and because of this you come back to life without your entry fee and then have to learn to live without it. Which could definitely be something interesting to explore.
And there’s... just so much more I could say about the The World Ends With You (like how music themes cleverly tie into the story). It’s my favorite game of all-time, and definitely one of my favorite stories of all time. It just has a good message about culture and stuff (though more than anything, it’s a game about people), and teaches a good message. And there are so many good twists and turns that will keep you wanting to play. There’s also a relationship in there that reminds me of Lawlight somewhat, maybe (or maybe I should say Lawlight reminds me of it, because I discovered TWEWY first), and they have a whole cat-and-mouse kind of thing going on, ala Lawlight.
So, yeah: The The World Ends With You would probably make a good Death Note story; and I can’t recommend it enough, to anyone who might want to give it a go. You could totally just watch a playthrough of it on YouTube, too.
Also, missions have a time limit and the Players have a ticking clock burned into their hand at the start of each one--ticking away--that doesn’t go away until the mission is cleared... which isn’t important to this post at all, but it’s just something super coo to mel. Though I feel bad for the Players having to be in pain for it, of course.
Edit: I also forgot to mention that there’s a The World Ends With You anime (twelve episodes) now. So you can get the story that way, if you want:) Though I still prefer the game. Though I’m not an anime hater, by any means. In a perfect world, maybe watch the anime and then the game for anything you might have missed? But if you just want to watch the anime, that’s totally cool, too.
Edit 2: A Player (Reapers, too) can also read the minds of those still alive, but Players can’t scan each other.

whatever our souls are made of (his and mine are the same), pt. 27
Welcome to yet another one-shot.
Hope you guys like it.
You can also read it here.
See you!
would it be enough?
Prompt: favorite scene
Summary: It’s probably the rain will never leave. But they will try their best for each other. More than that. They will give it all.
But I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm
If your cascade, ocean wave blues come
All these people think love's for show
But I would die for you in secret
The devil's in the details, but you got a friend in me
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
Sometimes, they lie awake and wonder.
 Just sometimes.
When they are in bed, wide awake, and the moon shines through the window.
 They wonder.
They wonder about a single moment in time.
A single second that could have changed it all.
 They recall it all.
 The setting sun.
 Grass surrounding them.
 The Senkaimon.
 “Let’s go, Rukia.”
 “I’ve decided to stay here.”
 “See ya!”
 “Thank you, Ichigo.”
 “That’s my line.”
What would have happened if they had done things differently?
How would their lives have changed if Rukia had decided to go back to Karakura with Ichigo back then?
Would anything have changed at all?
Or would they have stayed the same?
Certainly they would have saved each other from heartbreak.
 Maybe.
 Or not.
 Would it have been easier?
Would it have been more difficult?
And where would they be now?
The truth is they don’t know.
 They will never know.
 These questions cannot be answered.
But one thing is for sure.
Rukia had made her choice then.
 To stay.
 That is true.
Eventually, however, she had gone back.
 To Karakura.
 To Ichigo.
 Time and time again.
And it had all turned out just fine.
One could say it had been worth it.
But still, sometimes, when they close their eyes, they can see a field of grass and the sky painted with dusk.
And there had been a promise in Ichigo’s eyes.
 Both had known it.
That something had changed right then and there.
And if she had taken that leap.
 If she had followed him…
 Well─
Perhaps it hadn’t happened for a reason.
Maybe there were things that they had needed to experience to reach this moment.
And so, they forget about it.
 Move on with their lives.
Forget all the what-ifs and missed opportunities.
And enjoy this new thing they have going on.
 It’s been years after all.
Over four years that cannot be reversed.
 The present is much different.
It’s just the two of them now.
 And it’s alright.
They can forget about doors closing and about unspoken questions.
That is, of course, until they are back there.
 In that very same spot.
It is funny how there are moments that just repeat themselves without meaning to.
Ichigo had just gone to Seireitei that day.
 Not uninvited.
 But unannounced.
It had taken Rukia by surprise.
As it turns out, the holidays are around the corner.
And he’s asking her to come to Karakura.
 With him.
For an extended period of time.
It feels exactly like it did during that moment.
A sense of déjà vu fills them then.
They are in front of the Senkaimon.
There is a gentle breeze blowing as the sun dies.
And Ichigo has a question in his eyes.
 An unspoken “come with me.”
But somehow it feels as if he were asking for more than accepting a simple invitation.
As if he wants more of her.
As if he’s proposing the idea of forever.
It catches both of them off-guard.
They realize there is a decision to be made right here and now.
 It is frightening.
Because it is obvious that this half-life must come to an end at some point.
That there will come a time when they will have to choose.
 To choose a home.
 A life.
 For the two of them.
They have matured enough to know what they want.
But the question is if they want it to always be like this.
And forever is such a long time.
 Humans make promises of love.
But it is always until death do them part.
Shinigami, likewise, make promises that they could very easily break, and not only because of death.
 But this
This bond that they have, they know will transcend the limitations of time of space.
 These are not empty promises.
Forever is quite frankly, for forever.
Stretching over the course of their lives and beyond.
Lifetime after lifetime after lifetime until the end of time.
The question is, then, if they are ready for something like this.
Would they be alright if they were to undertake such a journey?
Would they ever come to regret it?
Wish they would have chosen differently?
 That is the fear.
The frightening thought that they don’t have what it takes.
 That they are severely lacking.
Because they will never have a calm life with each other.
 They know this.
It won’t be rainbows and butterflies all the time.
They won’t live a normal life.
 Or have a normal relationship.
Perhaps there won’t be marriage nor children nor white houses.
And there will always be fighting.
With wars and blood and pain and destiny always following them around.
A threat at the back of their minds.
(During your happiest moment, I’ll come back to kill you)
 There won’t ever be peace.
And yet they cannot fathom being without the other.
Because maybe they are not each other’s best option.
It’s probably the rain will never leave.
But they will try their best for each other.
 More than that.
 They will give it all.
 For better or for worse.
If the other needs a partner to fight for them, they will be that.
If they just need a shoulder to cry on, there will be there.
And they cannot promise that the clouds above will leave.
But for richer and for poorer.
There will always be even the tiniest of rays of light shining through.
Even when the other doesn’t want to talk, they will be there.
Basking in the tranquil silence that comes from understanding each other.
 In sickness and in health.
They will keep the other warm when it is too much.
When oceans and thunder try to drown them.
 To love and to cherish.
They would die for each other.
They would kill for the other.
They would change destiny time and time again.
Because nothing, not even death, can separate them.
This bond that ties them is infinite.
 But would that be enough?
 Is it enough?
And the answer will always be yes.
 Ultimately, there is no hesitation.
They must accept the true meaning of their bond.
 And so they do.
 “Let’s go, Rukia.”
They walk hand in hand towards the next stage of their lives.
 Together.
(And the rain has stopped)

@bevorzug-t liked your post: “Permanent Starter Call”.
It had been so long. SO LONG. He hadn’t been outside in centuries. He honestly couldn’t believe it. He knew this day would come, but he hadn’t been expecting it. Finally, there was light shining down on him and he could see far more than just himself. The shadows were no longer engulfing him. He was free. Free at last. His senses were overwhelmed by the tiniest details. He hadn’t even seen c o l o r in so long. He had forgotten how beautiful the outside world was even if it was the Seireitei. That didn’t matter. All that mattered was that he had somehow been released of his dark prison and he could continue on with his plan of taking out all of Soul Society. Before, his power had been so immense that Soul Society hadn’t known what to do. Arturo had slammed through their military forces, unstoppable. The damn Shinigami hadn’t even been able to defeat him in combat, no. The cowards had used trickery to encase him in that underground domain for ages, allowing him to wither and rot away, completely forgotten.
But, it seemed the tables had turned. Perhaps the burning desire to avenge himself had manifested because it had finally happened. He had felt the seal weakening. It caused his blood to boil and pump faster into his numb limbs. It felt like he had been awakened from a long slumber...He had managed to investigate the strange but strong reiatsu that was seemingly surrounding him. And, he recognized it. The Sokyoku. He wasn’t sure why or how, but the shards of that ancient weapon were falling down around his chamber, their untamed reiatsu affecting the seal. He wasted no time. Utilizing the enormous reiatsu from the shards, he was able to break the seal and leave the Central 46 once and for all. Not only that, the shards had also energized him beyond belief, giving him even more power than before! The Seireitei was about to be turned upside down from the inside.
He had strolled right out of Central 46, straight into the light. There had been no one around, but he knew it wouldn’t be long before someone sensed his presence. He wasn’t trying to hide it. He wanted the entire populace of the Seireitei, all those despicable Shinigami, to be feel his threatening reiatsu and tremble in their boots. Arturo Plateado was back. They had much to fear.
Yet, before he began his journey through the Seireitei to find formidable opponents to defeat and absorb their energy, he took a moment to appreciate the outside world and all of its splendors. He breathed in deeply, letting the fresh air fill his lungs for the first time in eons. That dark place had truly taken its toll on him and even though the shards had restored his power, his mind was still battered, plagued by his time spent in complete and total isolation. He stopped and looked down at himself. His eyes had only been able to catch glances of his fingers and feet, never even seeing his own body in full clarity for so long until this moment. He inspected his hands, turning them over, splaying his fingers. His skin was paler than he remembered. His fingers were longer than he remembered. He placed his arms back down by his sides. It would all come back to him in due time.
Tumblr media
For the first time in a very long time, he allowed a smile to stretch across his lips. He felt that faint flutter in the bottom of his stomach. He was happy. And, more than ready to exact his revenge. He was fully capable of taking down Head Captain Yamamoto now. The old bastard wouldn’t see it coming. He placed his hands into the pockets of his hakama (pockets he forgot existed in the dark) and forged ahead. It was time to put his foolproof plan into action. The Seireitei wouldn’t know what hit them.
He made his way out of the Central 46, having no idea where he was going. He was content with this. He wanted his presence to be a surprise. Yes, he was flaring his reiatsu like crazy, but that was only to intimidate the Shinigami and make them question and shudder at the thought of what was approaching. He would slowly make his way through the Seireitei until he bumped into someone, hopefully someone who would remember him and flee in terror. Of course, he wouldn’t let them get far. He was itching for a fight, something he hadn’t felt in a quite a while even before being seal away. He wanted to test out his power and see how much he had gained. He was most likely rusty thanks to his imprisonment, but he was a fast learner; one fight should be enough to spark his old recollections of combat and strategy.
He had been expecting to run into a captain or a Shinigami, but the figure heading towards him seemed to be neither of these things. He regarded them with an elegant raise of his brow, unperturbed by their presence. This person was much shorter than him, their head bobbing gleefully as they approached. His fist clenched inside his pocket. He was on guard even if he couldn’t feel much of their reiatsu. They were mostly likely keeping their true strength hidden. He felt no need to do that. He wanted his presence to be felt, feared.
Once they got closer, he could make out their appearance more. Long orange hair. Big brown eyes. She was wearing a pink shirt that looked incredibly tight and gray loose pants. She didn’t look like a Shinigami at all unless the uniform had changed; it had been many years since he had laid eyes upon a Shinigami, another person even.
Curious, he stopped and regarded her with a cold stare. “Are you a Shinigami?”
