I’ve mentioned it before... but an AU where Light and L are in the Reapers’ Game (from the The World Ends With You) as an unofficial Death Note sequel.
Now I’ll actually explain some of the game, for those who don’t know. While this Game could take place anywhere in the world, the The World Ends With You takes place in modern day Japan (Shibuya, to be exact), which is fitting for Death Note, of course.
...Spoilers for the The World Ends With You here.
The game is the afterlife. And you have to play this Game--with different missions you have to complete each day and survive the Noise (read: the enemies you battle with psychic abilities. More on that later, maybe)--for seven days and make it to the end. If you don’t make it to the end, you’ll be erased (like, literally. Since you’re already dead, there will be nothing left of you if you are erased). If you win, you have the chance to come back to life (which Light and L would probably for sure try to do), or become a Reaper (yeah, there are Reapers in this game, which is also fitting with Death Note. And of course they’re called Shinigami in the Japanese version). Reapers have to erase a certain number of Players, or they themselves will be erased.
And I’m just imagining a scenario where Light and L end up in the game after they die, and try to win the game in order to get their lives back... And you could say this doesn’t even break canon, of Ryuk basically saying Death Note users don’t go to Heaven or Hell and that everyone goes to Mu (nothingness), essentially. Because erasure might as well be that.
Also, in order to play the Game, you have to have a partner that you can fight the Noise with. And... different versions of the game (as it’s been on different systems) may explain this differently, but at least on the DS version (the original version), you and your partner are on different planes as you fight. But you have to trust each other and work together, because you share a health bar. If one of you dies, the other dies.
And it could be delicious putting Light and L into a situation like that, where they have to reluctantly try and trust each other, after Light killed L and stuff. And would be somewhat reminiscent of the handcuffs. LOL
I don’t know if I want to go into too much detail about the The World Ends With You here, because I don’t want to spoil everything for people who might want to pick it up (it’s so worth it). But part of the reason the Composer--the person who is in charge of and orchestrates the Game--lets people come back to life, is because they think their experiences in the Game may change them for the better, and they then may be able to use that to make the city as a whole better.
And speaking of... I haven’t gotten to the topic of entry fees yet! Basically, in order to play the Game, you have to give up what you value most--this is to make the player question if this thing was really as important as they thought it was--and you only get it back if you win the game. I don’t want to spoil too much here, but examples of some entry fees we’ve seen are memories and dreams, but there are a whole plethora of other things they could be. There’s also, potentially, the tiniest tiniest tiniest chance in the world (it happened once as a crazy exception at the end of the first game: huge spoiler there, I guess), that you didn't win the Game and someone else won it for you, and because of this you come back to life without your entry fee and then have to learn to live without it. Which could definitely be something interesting to explore.
And there’s... just so much more I could say about the The World Ends With You (like how music themes cleverly tie into the story). It’s my favorite game of all-time, and definitely one of my favorite stories of all time. It just has a good message about culture and stuff (though more than anything, it’s a game about people), and teaches a good message. And there are so many good twists and turns that will keep you wanting to play. There’s also a relationship in there that reminds me of Lawlight somewhat, maybe (or maybe I should say Lawlight reminds me of it, because I discovered TWEWY first), and they have a whole cat-and-mouse kind of thing going on, ala Lawlight.
So, yeah: The The World Ends With You would probably make a good Death Note story; and I can’t recommend it enough, to anyone who might want to give it a go. You could totally just watch a playthrough of it on YouTube, too.
Also, missions have a time limit and the Players have a ticking clock burned into their hand at the start of each one--ticking away--that doesn’t go away until the mission is cleared... which isn’t important to this post at all, but it’s just something super coo to mel. Though I feel bad for the Players having to be in pain for it, of course.
Edit: I also forgot to mention that there’s a The World Ends With You anime (twelve episodes) now. So you can get the story that way, if you want:) Though I still prefer the game. Though I’m not an anime hater, by any means. In a perfect world, maybe watch the anime and then the game for anything you might have missed? But if you just want to watch the anime, that’s totally cool, too.
Edit 2: A Player (Reapers, too) can also read the minds of those still alive, but Players can’t scan each other.

“don’t get your hopes up too high”: An Exhaustively Curated 2018 Playlist
So, since time immemorial I have been putting together year-end playlists and for a long time they were pretty sloppy affairs overall. Last year, I decided to make up some kind of formula for putting these playlists together. Basically what it comes down to is, from every new album I listen to, released in the given year, I pick one song. No repeating artists because that gets to be too much (although featured acts aren’t subject to this rule). When deciding what releases are going to get my attention, aside from my own personal tastes (skews toward alt. rock and punk a lot of the time) and releases from longtime favorites (this year we saw releases from Metric, and Animal Collective, as well as a long-awaited A Perfect Circle album, and even a Spotify single from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), I try to get give more of my time to queer artists (and this year there were TONS of queer acts releasing great music--Adult Mom, Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers, Janelle Monae, Snail Mail, SOPHIE, etc. etc. etc. hallelujah). I also try to make an effort broaden my musical worldview by making time for artists that operate within genres I don’t always naturally gravitate towards. This was a great year to get back into hip-hop (Rico Nasty, Cardi B, Tierra Whack, Black Panther OST) after not really vibing with some of the directions it has taken in the past ten or so years. I have also tried to include a track by every band I saw in 2018, providing they actually released something in 2018 and it is available on Spotify (strong apologies to Partner, Bully, Shellshagg, Kimya Dawson, Rozwell Kid, Los Campesinos, the incomparable Liz Phair, and the legendary Fleetwood Mac--y’all didn’t release anything this year). I give myself until the end of January of the following year to finalize my expansive, year-end playlist, and here we are. This years playlist is over 15 hours long--almost long enough to put on while you’re doing all that laundry you've been putting off. I hope you enjoy.
