SHINHWA Deep Dive #4/4: When Do We Hold Someone Accountable?
TW: mention and discussion of cultural appropriation, racism, and the n-word. Deeper discussion in a separate post.
SHINHWA was formed in 1998 and is currently the longest running k-pop group in history, breaking the so-called 7-year curse three (and a half) times over. They have six members: Eric, Minwoo, Dongwan, Hyesung, Junjin, and Andy, who have been together since the beginning, and are one of the most formative groups of k-pop’s 1st generation.
Here are my credentials: uh…none? I can name about three SHINHWA songs off of the top of my head, which is slightly embarrassing. I know of course about their incredible legacy, but similarly to BTS, I’ve been a k-pop fan for half a decade now so I figured it’s time to get to know such an important group better.

What do you think is gonna happen with BTS after military? Group longevity, I mean. Will they last? Because I get the feeling that after the mandatory comeback and tour things will get… tricky.
***
The members say they want to last until they're all well past retirement age, so who am I to say otherwise?
It's not like it's not possible, after all. Bands like U2, Coldplay, and Radiohead are still together and touring 20+ years later with most/all of the original line-up. Within k-pop, Shinhwa is technically still active 26 years later even if their performances have long downtime intervals these days.
Think I've said this before, but again, Chapter 3 will be everything we've seen in Chapter 2, supercharged. I assume the first thing on the agenda when BTS returns is an OT7 tour plus one or two OT7 albums. Concurrently or subsequently, solo projects (features, singles, EPs) for the members will continue within two years of BTS returning so they build on the momentum set up in Chap 2. I think its fair to assume a few years dedicated to group work, interspersed with solo projects in music, acting, design, producing etc, every seven years or so. I see things being intense for ~4 years immediately after their military service, before a more sustainable rhythm is set by the company/group.
Reading between the lines in HYBE's quarterly investor calls, the company (1) is desperate for cash and BTS is their primary cash cow; (2) intends to ruthlessly destroy their competition while they still have BTS locked up in exclusive contracts for the next 7 years.
It's anybody's guess on if BTS renews their contracts with HYBE in 2030. I'd imagine HYBE will offer any concession to keep the members so we'll see. There's also been some chatter about one or two members starting sub-labels in HYBE, and while that's an interesting possibility, it's still just chatter for now.
In the meantime, the fandom will only become more crazy so buckle up if you intend to be active in fandom spaces.

I have Social media account the one i use for fangirling about Shinhwa and There I post stuffs about Shinhwa as well, it's been there since the last 7 years, during my time manage the account I've seen many new fanaccs appeared but then many of these accounts are no longer actives. Really, they come and go , to the point that I make a bet with myself, guessing how long they could last as SHCJ, how fast their Infatuation with Shinhwa dies. In another hand, My post too got less and less likes/comments because i think my Shcj mutuals are no longer active, and some even quit fandom.
And then there's you, still doing all of this effort and it's amazing for real that you are still not out of love, still willing to spare your free time to Shinhwa when there's probably 'less audience' who cares about your hardworks. Again I say, it's amazing and I can't help but to ask what drives you to go beyond miles like this for a group who I think have no future (and intention) left to go back to the way they used to be? What makes you still love them the same, no matter they've been gone for so long?
Hi, thank you for your kind message. I have to say it made me sincerely laugh. The reason is my other blog blaq-o.tumblr.com, which runs for ten years and it's MBLAQ fan account. MBLAQ's last comeback was in 2015. And in 2017 when some members were in the army and there was really almost nothing, my long time A+ friend (A+ are MBLAQ fandom) got into Shinhwa through Eric and basically "dragged" me with her :D Minwoo charmed me, so I decided to follow this little sun. And after watching Shinhwa18 I slowly fell for the whole Shinhwa.
To answer your question, while I love MBLAQ's and Shinhwa's music, I am fan of the members. And at least few are somewhat active at all times. Compared to MBLAQ, Shinhwa still has many fans. And even MBLAQ has fans who appreciate to have an archive to go to. I'm used to have small engagement, so it doesn't bother me. I build archive for fans old and new, because it's something I enjoyed finding, when I was a new fan. And because it's my hobby. As for interactions with fellow fans, Twitter is still the place to do it. For how long, who knows... both these platforms are run into the ground.
And then, from time to time, someone writes a kind message and I feel like it's all worth the time :)

About Yunho in SuperM ;) Sadly, young fans are often toxic, and it's especially noticeable in Kpop (and Jpop too).
oh 100%, anon. that's been going on for awhile now especially since groups are lasting way longer and hitting new age milestones. it's just weird to me because it wasn't always like that in my experience. there's always been haters but 10 yrs ago kpop fans were way more welcoming in general to mature groups making comebacks. i dont think anyone was calling lee hyori a hag, shinhwa's post military cbs were huge, and rain's 30 sexy was a hit 🤔
i think this is more of a societal problem tho tbh since i'm probably considered a hag (i'm 27) to chronically online teenagers who use tiktok 12 hrs a day. and that's fine idc. i'll continue to enjoy my elderly kpop groups 😋☺️😁

Shinhwa WDJ, pink romantic mood... Confidence in 'first unit sortie
Shinhwa WDJ, which consists of Shinhwa Lee Minwoo, Kim Dongwan, and Junjin, showed off a deadly pink charm.
Shinhwa WDJ's agency, Liveworks Company, unveiled the first concept photo of their first mini-album 'Come To Life' through the official channel on the 15th, and showed off their three-person, three-color visuals.
Shinhwa WDJ showed a soft and bright atmosphere with a pink mood, breaking away from the existing image as if showing a new beginning with the first unit. In particular, the fresh and warm atmosphere of the three members with flowers that penetrated the concept drew attention.
Shinhwa WDJ, which boasts a unique atmosphere with different personalities and styling, is expected to raise expectations by opening a track list, pre-released songs, highlight clips, title song concept posters, and title song music video teasers before their comeback.
Meanwhile, Shinhwa WDJ's first mini-album 'Come to Life' will be released on December 6th through various online music sites.

Annnd Bts still haven't done a cover of peaches&cream by 112. What a missed opportunity. You would think since In Korea younger groups cover SHINHWA and DBSK etc. They would keep the standard when they came to America. I just thought it was a cute idea, but based off their recent comebacks. They're more likely to do a Jackson 5 cover if anything

What a beautiful scene to behold!
Well-mannered group BTS and the humble sunbae Shinhwa with 20 years in the industry ..
Shinhwa gives an example on how to always stay humble & considerate to other artists even if you’re a legend of Kpop.
Glad that the juniors have such a role model sunbae around to guide them ♥
