Indigenous territories with secure land rights not only reduce deforestation inside their lands in the Brazilian Amazon, but also lead to higher secondary forest growth on previously deforested areas, says a new study.
This new report, published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is off the back of multiple studies in recent years pointing to the efficiency of Indigenous forest conservation in Brazil’s Amazon once their territories gain full recognition by the government. According to the report, these territories support higher rates of secondary forest growth than the privately owned and unincorporated lands around them.
The secondary forests that grow back after clearing of original old-growth help revive biodiversity and capture carbon, combating climate change. Regenerated forests, also known as secondary forests, attempt to mimic the old-growth forest that was once there and act as carbon sinks, explains environmental and natural resource economist Nilesh Shinde, a postdoc at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a co-author on the paper.
“Granting tenure to these Indigenous lands in Brazil is not only a really good human rights policy, but it’s actually a great environmental policy as well,” says political scientist Kathryn Baragwanath, now at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne, Australia, and lead author of the study.

Indian Elections (Part 2)
Part 2 of the result and campaign opinions is here!
I know I said that Rajasthan was Congress's biggest comeback, well I take it back because INDIA alliance won in Maharashtra with Congress getting 13 seats, Shiv Sena (og one) with 9 and NCP (again, og one) with 8. With BJP getting 9 seats, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde one) and NCP (new one) getting 7 and 1 seats respectively, NDA lost 28 of its seats. And honestly, what a banger. Sharad Pawar probably deserves credit for this, that man is a shrewd politician. Also, the Congressi responsible for campaigning in Maharashtra also deserves credit, because Congress performed well and beyond the expectations here.
Tamil Nadu my beloved. Major INDIA sweep! DMK (22) and Congress (9) while BJP remained on the zero mark. As expected of the Tamil public. Everyone say thank you to DMK's campaign and BJP's incompetency to get the Tamilians on their side.
Chhattisgarh is an almost BJP sweep, with BJP getting 10 and Congress getting 1. Expected for Congress, given the Vidhaan Sabha results last year.
Another almost BJP (25) sweep is Gujarat, again, as expected. It is, after all BJP's garh, as my mother calls it. Very heavy campaign that paid off for BJP. Hats off to the Congressi who won 1 seat, probably worked very hard on his own.
Things get tricky in Karnataka, where BJP won with 17 seats and Congress got 9. Again, not much familiar with Karnataka politics, but BJP did lose 8 of its seats, so I guess a part of the public is losing trust in the government but it's not a majority yet. A Rajasthan like situation.
TDP shines in Andhra Pradesh with 16 seats, BJP with 4. Congress remained on its zero mark. Chandrababu Naidu come to the INDIA bloc you can be deputy PM
Congress (14), Muslim League (2) and CPIM (1) lead INDIA alliance to an almost sweep in Kerala, BJP getting 1 seat. I'm so glad that Shashi Tharoor won from Thiruvananthapuram, he is a delight to watch.
Things are perfectly balanced as all things should be in Telangana, with both Congress and BJP winning 8 seats each. I guess the public has major divide on issues and opinions.
That's it for this part, I thought this will be done in 2 parts, but guess not.

Who is Kunal Kamra?
Kunal Kamra is an Indian standup comedian and political satirist. His performances include jokes about the absurdities of life, politics, big business, economy and popular culture.
Kunal Kamra used to crack jokes even on Manmohan Singh ji led government before 2014 but that was never censored but now the coward bullies of Shinde Sena resorted to violence since they have a problem with the truth and reality.

111 years of Raja Harishchandra (03/05/1913). Raja Harishchandra is a silent movie made in India in 1913. It's directed and produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. Many people think it's the first big Indian movie ever made. The movie tells the story of Harishchandra, played by Dattatraya Damodar Dabke. Even though it's silent, it has words on the screen in English, Marathi, and Hindi. Phalke wanted to make a full movie after watching a film in Bombay in 1911. He went to London to learn about making movies, then came back and started his own film company. He got equipment from different countries and made a short film to get investors. He couldn't find women to act, so men played the female roles. Phalke did a lot of work on the movie, like writing, directing, and editing. The filming took about six months. The movie premiered in Bombay in April 1913 and was shown in theaters in May. It did well, which helped start the Indian film industry. Only parts of the movie are left today. Some people think Phalke made a remake in 1917 called Satyavadi Raja Harishchandra. There's a debate about whether Raja Harishchandra was really the first Indian movie. Some people say another movie called Shree Pundalik was first. But the Indian government recognizes Raja Harishchandra as the first. Phalke had a hard time finding a theater to show his movie because some people were already criticizing it. He had a special premiere in April 1913. Important people liked the movie, and it was shown in theaters for weeks. It was also shown in other cities and even in other countries with subtitles in Marathi and Hindi. In the movie, Dattatraya Damodar Dabke played Harishchandra, Anna Salunke played Taramati (Harishchandra's wife), Bhalchandra Phalke played Rohitashva (Harishchandra and Taramati's son), and Gajanan Vasudev Sane played Vishvamitra. Other actors included Dattatreya Kshirsagar, Dattatreya Telang, Ganpat G. Shinde, Vishnu Hari Aundhkar, and Nath T. Telang.

[ad_1] New Delhi: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday defended the summons issued to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra over his remarks on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, stating that legal action should be taken if required under the law. Speaking at the Times Now Summit, Vaishnaw, who is also the Information and Broadcasting Minister, emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional safeguards. “If the law of the land requires it, it should be done,” he said when asked if summoning Kamra was an extreme measure. The controversy erupted after Kamra, without directly naming Shinde, made remarks about the Deputy CM’s political journey, including his 2022 rebellion that led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. The comments, made during a stand-up performance in Mumbai, triggered a strong reaction from Shiv Sena workers, who vandalized the studio where the show was recorded. Vaishnaw stressed that while freedom of speech is a constitutional right, it comes with safeguards. “We have to work within the framework of the Constitution. Freedom of speech and expression is well laid out, and everybody respects it. But the safeguards on these rights are equally important,” he said. He further noted that cultural contexts differ across societies, adding, “What is right in Western society might not be right in our society.” Following a complaint from a Shiv Sena MLA, the Mumbai Police registered an FIR against Kamra for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Shinde. A mob violently ransacked a Mumbai comedy club and its building has been partly demolished after one of India’s most prominent comedians performed a satirical song about a local ruling politician during a performance there.
Kunal Kamra has a reputation for his acerbic comedy which often pokes fun at political figures. Few comedians in India dare to make political jokes for risk of a backlash.
Kamra’s standup routine, performed in Mumbai’s well-known Habitat comedy club on Friday night, included a parody song about Eknath Shinde, the second most powerful figure in the Maharashtra state government.
An online video of the routine prompted criticism from the leaders of Shinde’s Shiv Sena party. On Sunday night about 20 Shiv Sena supporters descended on Habitat and began to smash it apart, throwing chairs, tearing down posters and breaking light fittings.
The police have arrested more than 10 people for the incident, including the leader of Shiv Sena’s youth faction, Rahul Kanal.
The Shiv Sena-led government sought to blame Kamra for the violence. Maharastra’s chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, claimed in the state assembly on Monday that people were free to perform standup comedy but added that “freedom of expression has its own limitations. You cannot insult anyone”.
The state home minister, Yogesh Kadam, said the police were trying to trace Kamra and that the government would investigate his phone records and look into his bank account transactions to prove whether there was a “mastermind” or political conspiracy behind his jokes.Shiv Sena also filed police cases against Kamra for defamation and public mischief.
In a statement on Monday night, Kamra said he would not apologise, emphasising that “as far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system.”
He added: “I don’t fear this mob and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.”
Ministers also claimed that the Habitat comedy club was “illegal”. A demolition team from the local municipal council arrived at the venue on Monday and began demolishing part of the building on the grounds that part of it had been illegally constructed.
In a statement on Monday, the venue said it was “shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us. We have never been involved in the content performed by any artist”.
The venue said it was shutting down until “we figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression without putting ourselves and our property in jeopardy”.
Comedians and comedy venues have increasingly been caught in the crosshairs of India’s shrinking space for freedom of expression since the rise of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party, which has ruled for more than a decade. In Maharastra, Shiv Sena rules the state government in coalition with the BJP.
In 2021, a Muslim comedian was detained by police for weeks for alleged “vulgar” jokes insulting Hindu gods despite never having performed at the show. In the same year, the comedian Vir Das faced a backlash and police reports after a comedy monologue that dealt with politically sensitive issues.
Opposition politicians in Maharashtra condemned the violence and retaliation against Kamra. Shinde’s former political ally, Aaditya Thackeray, said “only an insecure coward” would react in such a way to a comedy song.

Kunal Kamra Controversy: Maharashtra Congress chief slams BJP-led Mahayuti govt with ‘Taliban-like state’ jibe
Kunal Kamra Controversy: Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal condemned the attack on Mumbai’s Habitat studio allegedly by Shiv Sena workers in protest against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra mocking Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in one of his recent shows. Comedian Kunal Kamra's Stand-Up Act Sparks Controversy Among Eknath Shinde Supporters
Mumbai saw protests after comedian Kunal Kamra’s latest stand-up act upset supporters of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The performance, posted on YouTube and Instagram, led to vandalism and legal action against him.
On Sunday, Shinde’s supporters damaged the Unicontinetal The Habitat in Khar West, where Kamra’s act was filmed. They also warned that he would not be allowed to "walk freely." Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed an FIR against Kamra, while the Khar police detained Shiv Sena leader Rahool Kanal and others involved in the protest.
What Was the Joke?
Kamra joked about Maharashtra’s politics, especially the splits within Shiv Sena and NCP. He pointed out how voters were left confused after so many political changes, saying, “First Shiv Sena broke away from BJP, then Shiv Sena broke away from Shiv Sena, NCP broke away from NCP… a voter had nine buttons to choose from, and everyone got confused.”
Kamra also hinted at Eknath Shinde, who comes from Thane, without naming him. He sang a parody of a song from Dil To Pagal Hai, referring to Shinde’s political moves. He also joked, “They wanted to end family politics, but someone’s father was taken away,” referring to the Shiv Sena split.
The Political Background
In June 2022, Eknath Shinde led a revolt against then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, taking several MLAs to Guwahati. This led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Later, Shinde’s faction was officially recognized as Shiv Sena, taking the party’s bow and arrow symbol, while Uddhav Thackeray’s group had to adopt a new name and symbol.
Growing Tension
Kamra’s comedy has once again highlighted the divide in Maharashtra’s politics. Some see it as free speech, while Shinde’s supporters say he went too far. With an FIR now filed, the controversy continues, raising questions about the limits of political satire in India. To read political news in Hindi, subscribe to our newsletter!
